If I go to a hairdresser to have my hair coloured I expect to pay for the hair dye AND the service that comes with it, not just the hair dye. How is buing a puppy different? Because people know what happens at the hairdresser as it's a regular common purchase. Puppies in a lot of cases are once/twice in a lifetime. All the poster is recommending is that breeders put out all the info so buyers know what goes into breeding a pup. Why is that so wrong? I mentioned it earlier and a few have since, and it's not directed at anyone specific here, but there are breeders who need to get over this, I am the breeder, do not question me, attitude. There is no benefit to anyone by not putting out all the info, other than making themselves feel extra important because they know something we don't. I've got no issues with the prices, and was happy to pay what i did for my pup from a breeder. But some of the experience while searching did sour my opinion.

sorry - I'm blaming Tuesday morning syndrome :) I completely agree re your view on that customer. To be honest i would have hung up after he just said black! Either learn to have a proper conversation or go elsehwere :)

Best post on this topic by far!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but i 100% don't agree with this, in that this kind of scenario means you factor that into your price. I would be extremely upset that if part of the money i am paying for a puppy goes towards what i would call poor business choices. Sorry if thats harsh, but rather than slugging prospective owners for this, why not get a pre-paid phone which you turn off after 7pm and goes to message bank? Or even list a mobile and turn that off? Many ways around what you have described instead of "I'm inconvenienced, so I'm going to up my prices".
-
Was just thinking back to before i bought my little punk, that alot of breeder adds do not put prices on the ad. Why is this? It would very quickly weed out those who see price as the number 1 concern??

Yes, I have also thought about this- the main ones that standout to me are: Registered ANKC breeder: *mandatory ANKC health testing/screening for all breeds that require it of breeding dogs *Vaccinations *Worming *Microchipping *Keeps pups til at least 8 weeks Unregistered backyard breeder: *does not do health checks (hip, elbow scoring ect or relative for the breed/s)before breeding dogs *may not vaccinate *may not worm *may not microchip even though it is LAW in every state *may get rid of pups before 8 weeks I did a lot of reasearch and spoke to a lot of breeders before making my decision. This is not aimed at anyone here, but it honestly floored me at the amount of breeders who had the attitude of how dare i ask for health screening results. I had pretty much done a deal with one puppy, and when i asked for results and if they were hip tested, the answer i got back was, "we have been breeding champions for years and you can speak to our local vet, no one has ever asked us for that before". They had in fact had a lot of champions, but when i'm asked to pay extra for the best, it's pretty rich them refusing to support any of the claims with evidence. As this was my first foray into the world of breeders, you can imagine how us average Joe's can start thinking, well this is all a load of crap. In my case i didn't, and found the perfect breeder with everything i was after, but it's not hard to see why the general public can sometimes be skeptical and question the high prices if they get the same experience as me. It's not always the public's fault
-
Really?? Awesome generalisation there! For the record i used a breeder and a well known one at that and although not on an unlimited budget cost was second to me behind getting a pup with the right bloodlines/temprement and parents that had been tested. So i whole hartedly support breeders and the prices they ask for puppies.

Home made ? My folks have some crazy-hot chilli's in the garden :)

Pepper Spray? never used it, just asking, but if i and my dog were being rushed and it was serious, would have no hesitiation in using it, regardless of what it did to the other dog. Has anyone ever heard of it being used on dogs? Does it work?

I wouldn't recommend any of those breeds with several young kids. They are all boisterous high energy breeds that will be very mouthy as puppies and have strong jaws. For little kids a carefully selected gundog or working dog is a better option as most are not hard mouthed (with the exception of cattle dog breeds) and are very easy to train which is important for a busy Mum. Completely disagree regarding Boxers. I have 2 kids under 9, several nieces and nephews under 5, and even two under 1yr. My pup is 6 months and is a delight around all of them. Never mouthy (as we trained him not to be), very gentle with them all, doesn't try and bowl them over nothing. Go to the right breeder, and speak to them to them about temprament, and ask which of the puppies will suit your needs, and if the breed will suit your needs and you will be comfortable you've made an informed decision. I had my heart set on a certain pup in the litter, and speaking repeatedly with my breeder, she quickly understood my situation and switched me to a pup that had the temprement that fitted in with us. The one i had chosen more on looks, was the most headstrong pup in the litter and she rightly swayed me away from him. Chosen from the right breeder with the right training, i have no issue with any of those in the list.

Although i agree you can never care too much, you can definitely over do things, and be over protective and be over cautious. Both with dogs and kids for that matter. Unfortunately it's a product of today's society, and the fact that all we hear all day and all we read all day is about just how dangerous everything in the big bad world is. Personally i would've loved to be around many years back when due to a lack of media scare mongering, people where a little more care free. I absolutely hate that as a society we are scared sh!tless of living!! - Excuse the language. People call me nuts, because i let my kids play outside every evening after they've done their homework and they don't come back in till it's dark. In the suburbs!! i also don't wrap my dog in cotton wool, and let hime be a dog. Yes i make sure he has the best food, and best bed, but if he wants to climb the cubby house, or roll in the mud, or play in the rain on a cold day, or sprint around the backyard on hot day, then so be it. He'll quickly learn that doing some of that doesn't make sense. Bit of a rant, but long story short, you can never care too much, but my God do we (today's society) overdo things! Sorry I disagree. My dogs weigh 2kg I have to overdo it and wrap them in cotton wool as you might call it, I'm okay with that. I cant for a minute just think it's ok for them to be left outside they are a target for theives and larger animals. The one time I let my guard down and let a child hold my puppy she got dropped and both her front legs broken requiring expensive surgery. Sure they are dogs, but they are high risk for injury and theft. They need boundaries and me to be overprotective for their one safety. The big bad world is stressful when you're leeeetle. They are much happier in an environment they feel safe and they still get their fun time (beach trips, lunches at cafes, parks etc) but it's under a controlled environment. Too much risk in today's society, too many off lead dog attacks (would kill mine instantly), too many thefts from backyards and im trying to eliminate some where I can :) You disagree, but i agree with you :) how does that work?? :) I don't think anything you've mentioned is what i would call overdoing it. It more sounds like a lot of common sense :)

At least a visit from authorities may make this person think to not do it again. Discouraging such actions is what is it all about, and I think this person should be reported, he did the wrong thing, the outcome was ok but he still did the wrong thing. This morning a lady at the local Milk Bar left her car running with 2 kids inside while she ran into the shop, I watched until she came out, as nothing happened this time do you think she should be encouraged to keep leaving the kids in a running car? Did you report her to the authorities given the fact that she endangered her kids? And if not, why not, and why would you then say it's ok to report this person to the police? On a similar note, i have heard cases of dogs choking from eating things like pig ears, which i know many people here feed. Do we start gathering details and reporting them to the police? Sorry guys, i have to disagree here. Not with the fact that what the owner did was wrong, but with tying up resources for something that "may" have happened. If it were me, i would have hung around to make sure the dog was ok, and then said something to the owner. But instead we will now have at least 2 police officers, (if it's reported to police) tied up for a few hours to look into this.
-
You obviously didn't read my opening post :) . Yes, there is need for further action, because next time, the dog might be left in the car for longer and on a much hotter day. And who is to know that someone, thinking: well I'll only be gone a few minutes while I rush into a shop, isn't going to meet with some sort of delay - maybe an accident, maybe meeting a friend and just forgetting. A lot can happen in the space of a few minutes. Read it, just missed the 15mins part. Again sorry. I understand what "could" have happened, and personally i don't take my boy with me anywhere if there is a need to leave him alone for any time, shopping, car park wherever. He is better off at home than tied to a post or left in a car because i wanted him with me. like i said though, nothing happened and now this owner is being reported to the rangers/police. We know nothing about why or if there ever will be a next time for this owner. Sorry if I'm upsetting some but it's my opinion and will leave it at that.
-
Thanks, sorry, missed the bit about 15mins. Just concious that if the dog was ok, is there really a need for further action?
-
How long was the dog in there from the moment you saw it to the moment you saw the owner come back? I'm gonna play devils advocate here a bit, but if we're talking minutes and the dog as you said was not in distress, I really can't see issue. If we're talking a long time, go for it. But if it was a few minutes, the owner may very well know not to leave a dog inside for a long time, and know what can happen, and now will have the police called on him/her for really doing not much wrong. Again stressing - if we're talking minutes.

Cage around the entire housing commission estate??

Cage around the house?

The owner is wanting to fight the conditions being put on his dog that has a history of attacking other animals and people. To me that is not giving a crap. So hang on, do we need to ban kids on skateboards? As much as i hate the things (skateboards not kids :) ), as an owner of a dog it is my responsibility to ensure my dog can cope with a kid on a skateboard. Interested to know why would you tell the kids off when they are doing nothing wrong? This is current NSW law Foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades may be ridden on footpaths unless there are signs that specifically prohibit them. However, riders must keep to the left and give way to other pedestrians http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/pedestrians/skateboardsfootscootersandrollerblades.html Also to add - my view is pretty simple on issues like this and it's basically if the majority of society need to change their behaviour so that a particular dog can function, then that dog doesn't really belong in society. I'd say the same of cats/birds/people whatever. Why should everyone in this dogs neighbourhood be petrified of walking the street because one owner and his dog can't function around other animals/kids on skateboards?
-
What a joke. A dog with a track record of attacking, an owner who doesn't give a crap and yet together they're allowed to continue being a mennace to society. Can you please let me know what part of NSW this is in? As a parent with kids and an owner of a puppy, i want to make sure it's nowhere near me and to ensure i have nothing to worry about. People b!tch and moan about dangerous dog legislation and how unfair it can be, but if you ask me, based on cases like this, it goes nowhere near far enough to ensure the saftey of society in general.

I definitely know about big sneezes :) Being a boxer you get the sneeze as well as that lovely saliva built up in the jowels ;) I know it's coming but can't resist that look when its belly rub time.
-
My little punk gets all exited when i get home from work and while he is sniffing away like crazy all over my legs/feet/arms and any other body part, he has this habbit of stopping so i can lean down and give him a tummy rub, and right at that exact moment, he'll look up and sneeze right in my face! Every single time!! :)

And now you make me see RED, here you go suggesting the small dog was to blame. Read the article again. The black dog was offleash. It was a much bigger dog. This was an unprovoked attack - it sounds like it was so sudden that noone had time to do much, they didn't see it coming! It RIPPED THE INNARDS out of the smaller dog. What does it take to make you and people like you realise that this is abnormal? It is completely unacceptable and this owner should go to jail and pay an enormous fine, his dog should be euthanased. The owner did nothing at all to prevent this attack and I'd like to know how many other dogs and animals have been killed already by this large dog - you can put money on it that it's done it before. wow, so many posters suggesting i'm excusing an unprovoked attack. Read what i actually said and try again. I did not place blame on either dog, I simply stated I'd really like to know the full story, not just what the media has told us. Did this occur in an offleash dog area? Did the larger dog approach the smaller dog and the larger dog ended up reacting to the smaller dog acting aggressively? Was the small dog really on leash? Lots of questions which we probably will never know the answer to. What does it take to make people like me reaslie that this is abnormal? What does it take to make morons who own little yappy fluffballs to realise that it's not ok for their dog to aggressively approach other dogs? I didn't intend for my comment to suggest that a dog getting barked at was reason enough for the other dog to react in such a manner, however anyone who lives in the real world will see stupid owners of all sized dogs allow their uncontrolled dogs to act dominant or aggressively toward other dogs, the majority of those are little fluffy yap yaps. It doesn't take much for a large dog to rip a small dog apart! BTW, I'm absolutely sick of stupid owners(mostly owning little fluffball yap yaps) who allow their dogs to charge and carry on toward my dog. It may well be the case that this little dog was completely innocent and the larger dog(well it's owner at least) was completely at fault but I'd like to know the full story, not just what we're told by the media! what don't you get from the article? It's the owners account, NOT the media's. The owner said it possibly could be a staffy NOT the media. The owners dog that was ripped apart DID NOT approach the other dog, it was with it's owners and it was approached. Let me guess, we also don't know if it was the media that ran onto the beach dressed as a dog and killed the other dog? Media, Media, Media - how dare they report a victims account of what happened. The fact that the other owner did the bolt i think in about 30 seconds shows you what happened here. But hey, its the media's fault. Not the owners, and certainly not that poor aggressive dog that ran up and tore another dog to shreads.

After Many Years, I've Kicked The Westies Off My Bed...
