Coursing Club For Adelaide
OutOfSightHound replied to OutOfSightHound's topic in General Dog Discussion
What about the people who are already interested. Maybe that's where to start. Contact other clubs and see if they can offer advice and support. Good luck with it. I'm thinking of contacting the Hound club as OS its a serious sport. They have been a few fun races put on by various coursing clubs in the middle of the Greyhound races, but it would be great to see sight hounds other than Gerys at the Oval track racing. On my last trip to Europe I saw oval track racing with whippets Borzoi and Afghans and other Sighthounds and it was AMAZING!!!!!!! -

That's what I'm trying to do as I'm no longer looking at this as fun. I'm actually going to get an afghan bitch from a racing kennel OS. Currently I have to keep travelling to Queensland to get a serious day out. I'm not interested in fun days anymore I want to get serious about it -

It is possible we could just have a straight racing day and have dogs race against time or each other. I'd love to book the track for a race day and promote the club idea -
Coursing Club For Adelaide

That's what I'd love to start doing! QLD has a great coursing club, they have comps and plenty of categories for terriers, sight hounds and even mutts. Points can be earned towards titles and there is even a title combining show and coursing points. http://www.qldlurecoursing.com/index.php -
I've repeated searched for a lure coursing club in Adelaide for Sighthounds and bigger dogs. It seems that there are plenty of people interested so I'm looking for others to help, start a club. I've never done this before but I'm over having nowhere to take my hounds coursing. I want to take it on as a serious sport but the only place is Brisbane and I can't afford to travel there every weekend. So who's interested?

They also promote the harmful myth that all dogs are inherently good unless mistreated and all psychological issues can be overcome. Hmm it is a common misconception that certain issues mean the dog has been mistreated. Sadly temprment due to poor breeding can play a part. I personally know of a breeder friend who put a dog down becasue it had serious temprement issues. It was awful and she had spent huge dollars importing it but she felt she couldn't breed from this dog because it had serious human and dog agression issues even though it had NEVER been mistreated! I OFTEN WISH THE PUBLIC WAS MORE EDUCATED ON THIS! I'm currently helping someone with a seriously bad tempered maltese shitzu from a PET SHOP. His problem is bad temprement combined with being spoiled rotten and no discipline making him a monster. The people are totally mistified as their last 2 were spoiled rotten no dsicipling but had no issues. I tell them its temprement and that they got a seriously dominant male puppy. Their other dog although spolied with no discipline she is sweet natured and very placid. Yet they still don't get what it means when I tell them their dog has a bad temprement and that even with all the training we are putting in he will never be a nice trust worthy dog *sigh*. As someone who keeps big dogs there is no way I'd breed a big dog with his temprement becasue it's an accident waiting to hppen! I once worked with someone who got a puppy from a pet shop. Some long time later I asked her how the puppy was and she said she had it pts because it was feral and no matter what she did, she couldn't control it. Attacking, biting, completely uncontrollable. She got the puppy at five weeks ... I always ask how old was a dog when you got it and it amazes me how many people get a dog at 6 weeks or less!!! -

Im not suggesting the convention is only here or that it was invented here however, in the main most people who stay here hold the same beliefs and ethics - its reasonable to say its a convention that most dogz rescue forum users agree with. It is not however, what is necessarily practiced by other rescue people and its not something that has to be practiced in order to be within the law in the state of NSW. No it's not law, it's best practice to assess dogs. And it's illegal to make false claims. And it's illegal to engage in misleading or deceptive conduct as well, I think it could be seen as deceptive to be promoting dogs like the dog aggressive, fence jumping red-nosed amstaff as being suitable for people to take home. I think the dog is faulty goods. It's not illegal not to assess, but it is illegal to make claims that you are not qualified to make that could result in a person being misled. That is a point worth taking further I think, if the claims on Facebook are true, a few people could have legal actions against Pound Rounds. Does pound Rounds have a licence to fund raise? If not the ATO would love to know! You get more time in jail for tax evasion and fundrasing without a license than animal cruelty! -

Don't underestimate the damage little dogs can do to babies and small children. I have a friend who is terrified of any dog becasue as a 1 year old she had her face reconstructed after having it ripped open by a JRT. I'd say the psycological damage is just as bad if not worse as she will cross streets to aviod even chis! -

As someone who helps other people with their "bad" dogs I certianly wouldn't adopt one! My babies were from reputable breeders I had relationships with and I chose 2 adult dogs that suited my personality and fitted in with my family as even within breeds there are wide vaiations on personality. The fact is most people with the experience and ability to deal with these dogs don't want them. Peronally if I'm going to spend hours and hours training a dog i want to compete in dog sport not just get my dog to behave enough so I can take it for a walk or leave it at home without all the neighbours calling the council becasue of incesent barking and howling! I do enough of it for other people I want to come home and enjoy my dogs go for a stress free walk and go to dog sport comps on my weekend. -

Yep its usually the easiest way to shut down a dodgy rescue! There are so many rules than govern charities that its easy to make a mistake so all you need is something small to gt the ATO in the door and they find the rest. Also the ATO will protect your identity, when you report they don't even want to know who you are and take all corespondence by snail mail. Also you get more jail time for fiddling the tax office than fiddling with kids so it's s good way to catch a crook!

Just When I Thought I'd Heard It All
OutOfSightHound replied to indigirl's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Sigh... I never understand this sort of thing...I foster for rescue and have bought beautiful dogs from a breeder but there is no way I would just breed 2 random dogs..No health history or pedigree...no garentees of what pops out is even what you want with X's. I see some strange crosses on gumtree like Merema x Kelpies and Kelpie x Greyhounds and wonder who on earth is going to want that dog No one thinks about what happens to all the puppies you cant keep Then they call a recue and say come get 'em cause we don't want em! ...Sigh...You can only try educate people but they wont always listen -
Greylvr, I totally agree there. Sadly a lot of the "new" rescues popping up of late are saving anything CUTE with a pulse! Dogs that are really nice but NOT "cute" are being passed over for "cute" dogs with serious problems both behavioural and medical! I'm also angry that problems like severe seperation anxiety get described as "like to always be close to their human" or "must be only dog" if the dog has serious agression issues. I think its not fair on all the rescues doing good things, and then having their work undone or picking up the pieces for rescues that just wanna save it becasue its CUTE without thought for the animal or new owners.

I would assume they do more. I cant speak for all but I wont just get a dog and place it. IMO you have to have some time with the dog especially since sometimes dogs into a new home can act very differently day one then day 12. A lot of times in my experience the behavioral probs don't come out until the dog feels comfortable in its new place this is why its important to me to have a dog in a home environment for a bit. I am not saying any rescue who doesnt is bad but just throwing my 2 cents in. Thanks Greylvr.... I'm interested in different people's opinions on this. I volunteered to foster a few months ago and the whole experience was awful It felt like I was just lumped with a dog (that no-one from the rescue had met) and had no support at all. I will never foster through that group again & may not foster again at all due to that experience (which sucks because I really wanted to help). It wasn't pound rounds but now that I look back not sure if maybe they are associated with them.... This is just my opinion but.. foster carers are a bit like adoptive homes. Not every foster carer will be suited for every dog and dogs should be placed so that carers get a little bit of experience with something different but without pushing their abilities or making it a negative experience. I think it's also incredibly important to provide support as foster carers aren't easy to come by. A group that mistreats foster carers is a group that shouldn't be in rescue at all. Down here, finding suitable foster carers is painfully hard, it seriously irks me when other groups don't realise how good they have it and take for granted the very people who support their entire rescue. Personally, I'd name, shame and then move on. There are some awesome groups around that would appreciate your help. I'm not comfortable naming them on a public forum incase I was a one off & they really are doing a good thing...... I don"t know the group you are referring to but I had a rough first time .Thankfully another wonderful rescue lady helped me through BUT no-body really wanted to take the issue futher for the group was well known WITHIN the rescue community for doing these things therefore it came as no suprise to them and they thought rather than MAYBE giving rescue as awhole a bad name they advised me not take it futher as over the years many have tried and failed but they were kind enough to run me through some of the better groups and make sure I was aware they weren"t all like the group who used and abused me Its been afew years now and I know the group who did me over is still doing it to others but its a case of moral wrong doing and not a legal matter but that still doesn"t make it right to mess with peoples emotions can be a dangerous mental health risk .I guess in this world there will always be the good and the bad I know how it can hurt and anger you but I do believe in karma and with so many outstanding rescue groups Im sure you will find one that not only suits you but supports you .For me I make sure when someone mentions the groups name I let them know exactly what was done to me Hmm sounds familiar my forst FOster expereince was really horrible too! Foster carers being blamed for not being able to handle it and dogs with serious problems being lumped with foster carers with NO place to go if it didn't work. No temprement test etc...straight from pound to you with minumum vet work! I got a very cute private surrender that turned out to have some very serious issues and was NOT good with kids and other dogs as descibed to me by the rescue. WHen I complained they said there was no where else for the dog to go never mind the saftey of my kids and animals!!!! It was always a sort of crisis management with no real thought or planning. They also seemed to have a lot of money to burn for a rescue group. If its the one I was with they are serious bullies and burn thru foster carers like matches. If you have a problem it's your fault and serious problems like fence jumping to wander for fun, seperation anxiety and dog to dog and dog to human agression are simple to fix if you have some treats and "strong" leadership. SORRY its more complicated than that! Strangely enough I have been meeting a lot of their former foster carers of late and there are a lot of them! ANd come to think of it I think this group does like pound rounds on their facebook page.

I think this thread is incredibly important as I was having the most horrible time being harassed by a Rescue because I disclosed to a Pet rehoming website that the dog was being Falsely advertised and was dangerous. I witnessed this dog bite numerous people and attack other dogs with 2 victims needing stitches. The dog was being advertised as a bit nipppy becasue it was a puppy } I provided the evidence and the paper work that we had provided to the local council to have the dog listed as dangerous even though it had been removed some time ago from a friends care. The dog was delisted along with a second dog we said was severly dog agressive as we had done the transport for this dog and it wanted to rip every other dogs face off. The reason I left this rescue was that it was rehoming "cute" dogs with serious problems and not disclosing things like the dogs had had serious illness like Parvo or head injuries etc. One dog had had pnuemonia and had a servely decreased lung capacity and the new family had adopted it to take trail riding . The dog is as sensitive as a pug and the new family were incredibly distressed that they may have almost unintentionally killed their dog because of his decreased lung capacity! Rescues that don't temprement test before placing in foster care are BIG trouble as they are putting people at risk amd problems are only found out once something BAD happens and not before. Full disclosure of hea;th and temprement is essential for the long term welfare of the adoptees and the dog!

I have no idea about this case, but I have yet to see a rescue group with enough money to actually mount a defamation case. Under Australian law you have to prove that your reputation has been damage by what has been published, which is a substantial and time consuming process. A defamation trial is a very expensive undertaking and I simply can't see a rescue group being able to afford it. If your friend is really concerned she can certainly just call their bluff. Why doesn't your friend contact Pet Rescue and provide them with the evidence, they can a least unlist the dog. He is contacting Pet rescue now with his concerns over the dog. Hopefully they will pull the dog and make sure this dog gets checked out properly!

Ummm... if it's the group I'm thinking of, then they are savvy enough to know that certain orders do not follow a dog interstate... T. Given that it's an offence to rehome a declared DD ANYWHERE without notifying Council, they don't have to. :) Talk about a seriously effed up set of ethics. How could ANYONE knowingly rehome a dog with such a history??? Not that it wasn't done locally but one of DOL's self professed rescue angels a few years back...TWICE. Well A DD dog order application along with 3 witness statement, vet bill and doctors report is being filed now to be HAND delivered to the council! Cant do much else other than protect someones own dog and kids.. What to do about the group I don't know but they certainly have a slick PR machine and a big facebook following but there are plenty of former foster carers out there that have been bullied and harassed for saying certain things and then being vilified after they leave!(I personally know 3 others other than myself) I think time will bring it out in the open I hope. I don't think my friend wants to be harassed by them anymore so he said he will just leave it at the DD order as it the best he can do! I feel so to as no one needs harassment and threats of legal action for defamation. I said just protect people out there and leave it at that becasue they cant take you to court for declring a dog dangerous!
-
It's not defamation if you can prove the accusations are true... Ok so would a vet bill for a dogs face being ripped open, Doctors report for a dog bite and a set of nasty emails about not knowing you stuff about dog behaviour when you just honestly wrote you had reservations be enough to aviod defamation?

What breed is the dog? Call me crazy but I see a lot of frustration and potential in a working breed not necessarily a maniac. If there is no one skilled to handle a dog like this then its nothing but warehousing and a waste - of course shitty behaviors escalate when people who dont know what they're doing are handling the dog. If there is someone who could take all this energy and harness it then there is a chance. It always comes down to is there a safe place for an animal like this, NOT is it straight off the cuff good or bad. I've rehomed a couple of pretty extreme animals and they're living their lives happily in their new homes because they're right for them. I very much agree with you here, but it's easier to rehome a pedigree dog such as a Malimute or Akita with problems than a general mutt from the pound that has a bit of Heeler a bit of Staffy and god knows what else. The dog I'm talking about has a few working breeds obviously and something else thats not definable. People looking at a bitzer on Pet Rescue want exactly that a nice family dog they can just have a good time with not a basket case. I know of a few dogs that keep coming back into FOster care becasue their temprement means they need a really special type of home and to be honest the people who know how to deal with this sort of stuff don't want to adopt it

I've rehomed a couple of pretty extreme animals and they're living their lives happily in their new homes because they're right for them. I have a huge amount of experience with these dogs and have actually trainined dogs for working stock. This dog would be the type that would kill stock and rip tendons and throats out while on the job! It's not a matter of dealing with behaviour as IMHO and my friends this dog has temprement issues. It is extremely smart and I would say it's a doggie psycopath. When you try to redirect it it pays attention until your not looking and goes back to that bad behaviour it was doing. I attempted to teach it herding in the hope it might help but it just wanted to bite the legs and faces off the sheep! It didn't just nip a bit to move the sheep it just wanted to bite real hard straight off! No one who handles stock professionally would even consider having a dog like this! On the farm it would be probably shot! AS for other dogs it just harasses them until they get sick of it and when they growl at it to say PO it latches onto faces and savages them. Honestly 99% of people wouldn't have the ability to deal with this dog. I have had some naughty fosters in my time but not like this. This dog scares me becasue he is so young and so nasty but has never been mistreated. His former owners dispaired becasue they tried everything including getting a trainer in and it didn't stop the nipping. Basically if you weren't looking at it, it would find something to harass and round up!
-
Personally if it was my Rescue or I was foster co-ordinator and someone said they have grave concerns i would be getting a professional behavioural and temprement test. Then if that backed the foster carer up I would PTS the dog. Having said that if it was my Rescue I would be doing all that first before I even put the dog into foster care. Its why I love my new Rescue group sooo much!! All dogs are throughly tested before they arrive and if I call my foster co-ordinator to say there is a problem they are right on it. There is no way they want to rehome an even slightly bad dog! They even came and got a dog within an hour becasue it wouldn't leave my cat alone and didn't even get upset! They just said do you want a break or try again with another dog! That dog is now listed as NOT cat friendly! All dogs I foster have notes taken and full history given to the new owner including all medical etc... My friend really wants to bring all this out into the open but the group is threatening legal action for deformation if he does. Sadly they have done this to a few former foster carers yet you wont find it anywhere because they have a very PR savy person working for them that gets all stuff from Facebook etc pulled and they are real bullies! They were so nasty to my friend about it all and all he was doing was trying to bring to their attention the fact the dog was dangerous!
-
I don't want to see anyone especially children get hurt by this dog as it's listed as loves to play with kids!!!!! There is a distinct diference between herding kids up and playing with them!!! I'm going to get in contact with the Dog management people and report the dog as it also savaged the face of his dog! It makes the grade already for nusicence dog and with the stuff from the vet and the Doc there is enough evidence to probably have this dog listed as a menace.
-
Who assessed the dog in the first place? No one it was a private surrender straight into foster care. The dog never had a temprement test or anything. All it had was notes from the orginal owner. The orginal owner had tried their best with this dog. It's evident that temprement played a big part in this dogs problems because even with a very experienced person this dog was still nipping and bitting to push people where it wanted them and baiting other dogs into fighting with it. Its first foster carer recommened it be PTS but they just took the dog off this carer and gave it to another and just stopped communicating with him. This person also knows their stuff so why they didn't listen I don't know. That is appalling and frightening. For some, it is about life at all costs - even if by saving that life they are going to put others in danger. Totally unacceptable. They are completely irresponsible and it should be reported to the QLD DLG before a child loses it's eye or worse. Funny I was asked to rehome a dog who after being assessed council declared dangerous a dog behavourist declared dangerous and by the owners own admission claimed the attacks were dangerous yet they didn"t want the dog pts I refused to rehome it as it had already attacked and killed live stock and attacked children I explained that a dog of such nature had no place in society and to rehome him knowing these things would be on my head so I suggested to pts BUT as the owners thought that was rude of me I WAS then blacklisted by some people and told for a rescue to be a good standards then each and every animal has a right to live and should do so.I did explain the situation and the council order etc I still refused to rehome the dog nor would I keep a dog of such nature around my kids The owners had said they came to me as other rescues had suggested the dog be pts I don"t believe in knowingly putting other peoples lives at risk the consequences of a dog attack can affect more than the dog and the attacked I believe I also have a duty of care to not only the animal in my care but the person that dog goes to. I had a child here who screamed and cried as the result of my dog touching her ----Her mother told me she had been bitten by a dog and although they"ve tried she still has fear issues she did have a scar but given she is young the scar will fade but the emotional scars are the ones that will take alot longer to heal How do I report this dog to the authorities as this dog although only 5 months old is showing all the signs of becoming a menace and it wont be long before it's face nipping becaomes a serious bite! This save everything because its cute or deserves a chance is why I left. They also are not disclosing to the new owners of other dogs things such as the dogs health history (ie dog had Kennel cough or Parvo). Also not disclosing problems such as servere seperation anxiety etc. They just try to rehome the dog to someone who is home most of the time and then that person doesn't discover the problem until they go on holiday or out for the day.
