What Shampoo Do You Use And Why?
Sail_Away replied to skyehaven's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have always used the 'Natural' shampoo by Dermcare - http://www.dermcare.com.au/products/2-uncategorised/59-natural. It worked well on my previous Standard Poodle's coat and now only very occasionally I use it on my Vizsla. After the beach I just rinse with water but usually rub in some Aloveen which have a leave in conditioner and her coat shines and smells lovely I am also thinking of trying Dr Zoo as they are the same company as 'Moogoo' which I use on my skin and LOVE - all natural products and FANTASTIC customer service! -

Looking For A Leather Collar & Lead
Sail_Away replied to Sail_Away's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep that was my girl on the Ruthless FB BlackJaq Here is a pic of her wearing her new custom made burgundy Ruthless collar & lead! I'm so in love with it. Quality is outstanding and I'm really happy with the colour and design! I got so many comments at obedience however, unfortunately the next day she came into season so I can't show it off for a few more weeks -
Maybe post something on the HV thread on here as most of the breeders look at this page: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/105974-hungarian-vizslas/page__st__16020 There aren't many V breeders in OZ compared to other breeds but the breed is starting to crop up on Gumtree and also some not so reputable breeders (so called) on DOL… without the buyer doing the appropriate research they will end up with an unregistered pup… I've seen many

I have a Hungarian Vizsla and have read through some of these posts… unfortunately this breed is becoming increasingly popular because of it's looks and perception of 'low maintenance perfect family dog' as many websites advertise them as… however, they are definitely NOT a breed for everyone and they are increasingly being rehomed after a few months from people who didn't know how to meet their needs or realise how high maintenance they are in other areas. They are one of the most energetic breeds around and its not just a matter of taking them out for an hour or two each day it is the constant need to be with you 24/7 and with you, I mean ON you… some people find this very annoying.. I personally love it So what I would do is tell them to contact the Hungarian Vizsla Club of NSW http://www.vizsla.org.au and ask them to send out an information pack about the breed. There is also Facebook pages set up for V owners in each state and they have regular catch ups with the dogs so if you can persuade her tell her to go along… she might get put off by them then?? lol Thankfully the breed isn't overly common so getting her hands on one may be difficult as respectable breeders are very selective with who they give puppies too however, unfortunately BYB is beginning to be a problem. A vizsla will destroy her house without the desired attention … I would get her to watch some youtube clips as this is the best way to see the not so good things that may happen if a V doesn't have its needs met… Good luck and I hope she at least listens to you… thanks for coming on here to seek help

Current Vaccination Schedule?

Current Vaccination Schedule?
Sail_Away replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I went with the Nobivac for the second vaccination… but opted not to have the KC component with it as per my breeders advice and others with the same breed. You have to wait another 10 days post the vaccine until you can take them out in public but it means you don't need to do the third shot. The next C3 booster is due at 15 months I think and then I'm going to titre test after that and only vaccinate when necessary. Not all vets carry the Nobivac vaccination though and my vet said it was very safe. -

There are different types of RAW feeding… some people follow the 'Prey model' which is purely whole meat & bones or the 'BARF' method which I tend to follow that includes vegetable matter… VAN is supposed to replace the veg component to the diet… It's good in that it is balanced with supplements like yeast, calcium and kelp etc rather than you having to add all these things in yourself to have a balanced RAW diet for your dog. -
Here is some positive information on the benefits of coconut oil for dogs. This information is written by Dr Jean Dodds (A leader in vaccine research and thyroid disease): http://drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/post/47127324583/coconut-for-pets Also an article in Dogs Naturally: http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/the-health-benefits-of-coconut-oil/?inf_contact_key=c09c4441c1e9a2252acbff0eec3e1cdee042e8bb99bdd1d72f24e1fb4e647ec8 And some more advocating its use: http://www.dogdishdiet.com/2013/08/feeding-healthy-oils-like-coconut-oil-may-help-with-medical-problems/

Vets All Natural - Perfect Puppy Nutrition
Sail_Away replied to Dr Bruce Syme's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed it with sardines once a week -
I just ordered a large antler from www.naturalpetstore.com.au - I buy nearly all my food from this company. Delivered the next day and flat rate shipping!

Very interesting post. My dog is fed a very well balanced RAW diet including sardines, salmon, raw eggs, flaxseed oil etc and she is in amazing condition her coat is very shiny and the vet & other people always comment on how great she looks. The coconut oil was just another thing I was thinking of to add to the diet in the thought it could only help… I will definitely be using it topically on her pads which are a bit dry at the moment and I'll look further into whether I should add to her diet. Thanks

I also started my pup on VAN since about 10 weeks of age… the puppy formula is up to two years. -
Hi everyone I've been reading about the benefits of cold pressed coconut oil for both humans and fur kids - it seems like it can have great health benefits for dogs when added to their food and healing properties if applied topically to the skin and/or cracked pads… So I purchased some organic virgin cold pressed coconut oil today and was wondering for those who give it to their dogs, how much you give each day?

We bought a brand new 'Liberty' single tank hydrobath about 15 years ago when we had a Standard Poodle and it was one of the best brands then and probably still is… We sold it this year as we no longer needed it, but it was still in excellent condition and working like the day we bought it. The only thing I wouldn't do again is buy one with a single tank, it's a bit annoying having to drain it after shampooing and then fill up with clean water for rinsing

Blackhawk, Artemis Or Holistic Select
Sail_Away replied to fluff1234's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have spent a bit of time looking at different dry foods before I got my pup and I decided to go with 'Artemis fresh mix med/large puppy mix'. The ingredients listed in the first few lines will make up the bulk of the food and to me artemis was great. These are the ingredients: Chicken, Turkey,Chicken Meal, Salmon Meal,Pearled Barley, Whole Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Millet, Potatoes, Dried Egg, Tomato Pomace,Chicken Fat ( preserved with mixed tocopherols Salmon,Flaxseed,Natural Chicken Flavour, Salmon Oil ( A source of DHA) Choline Chloride,Dried Chicory root, Kelp, Carrots, Peas,Apples, Tomatoes, Blueberries, Spinach, Cranberry Powder, Rosemary Extract, Parsley Flake, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Green Tea Extract, Barley Grass Extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus Faecieum, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Saccharomyces Cerevesiae Fermentation Solubles, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin D Supplement, Folic Acid Try and avoid anything that says "meat meal" - this means it can be any animal or parts from animals.. best for it to say lamb meal or salmon meal etc. I liked that the first 4 ingredients were proteins and the next few are not really fillers. I predominantly feed a raw diet with Vets all Natural or my own veg mix but I will occasionally feed dry (maybe once a fortnight) or put it in her kong wobbler every now and then… I bought a 6kg bag of this artemis when I first bought my girl home (8 weeks old) and only this month ran out - she is 1 in a few days…. however, I decided to buy some more dry food today and after going back through all the brands and looking at all the ingredients came back to this same one so I bought it again… I buy from www.naturalpetstore.com.au - I think there prices are very reasonable and it's only $5 flat rate shipping. I got an email just now saying it's been dispatched already (I ordered about 4 hours ago!) - I also bought another 5kg bag of VAN for puppies as it's taken the same amount of time for this to run out…! I think the key is to feed variety and whatever your dog does best on. My girl gets a big variety of different raw meats including sardines, salmon, lamb, chicken, liver, kidneys, beef, kangaroo, turkey etc whatever I can find. I give raw eggs, flaxseed oil, cottage cheese, psyillum husk occasionally and sometimes I cook pork with rice and cooked veg. Everyone on here has great knowledge on different foods and dry kibbles - but again whatever suits your dog best. Also just while I'm at it - I actually have two 10kg bags of Royal Canin 'Mature' (dogs over 7 years) that are unopened and I would like to get rid of - the only thing is they expired in late 2012… PM me if interested -
I use Valuheart or Proheart every month purely for heart worm but then on the third month I give Milbemax which covers intestinal worms + heart worm (as heart worm still needs to be monthly)… I remember trying to find the best combination to cover everything without unnecessarily overloading her system. I think I used Drontal + heart guard from my previous dog… same method.

Looking For A Leather Collar & Lead
Sail_Away replied to Sail_Away's topic in General Dog Discussion
I just saw… I didn't realise Ruth put a pic up Looks like the general consensus is burgundy… that's what I was leaning toward too…my girl is quite a rich red and I wasn't sure if it would clash though. I like the brass too… hmm but what about bling.. pink… amber… she has amber coloured eyes. Decisions decisions... -

Sail_Away replied to Sail_Away's topic in General Dog Discussion
hahaha sorry everyone! Maybe you can all live vicariously through me and help design the collar for me??? I'm totally stumped! Can't even decide on the colour leather I want! So feel free to suggest options for my Hungarian Vizsla and the bling I should use… hehe. I have decided to go with Ruthless Leather because the quality looks second to none and it's Australian -

Looking For A Leather Collar & Lead
Sail_Away replied to Sail_Away's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm not sure about going via Etsy for leather as who knows what the 'quality' is like & I want it to last forever - however, there are some fantastic things on Etsy and I bought a fabric collar from the UK and I LOVED it (for the design) but the stitching broke in it just the other day It seems like Ruthless is the way to go then!!! At first I though maybe the designs were a bit 'masculine' for my fine featured girl but I LOVE your's melzawelza!! Very beautiful! My girl is a red dog too and the brown leather is the way I was leaning too… I might email and try for a customised one -
Can anyone recommend where I can get a beautiful leather collar & lead for my HV who is turning 1 soon and I want to spoil her I have read a few posts on here and from what I gather the three best places to buy from would be: - K9 Pro - Ruthless Leather - Karma Collars I would really love a feminine & jewelled collar for my girl so leaning toward the last two companies. The only down side is I'm at the beach nearly everyday with her so will need to change over to another collar then so hopefully the leather will get enough use. I'm thinking it will be great for on leash walks, obedience and other activities… Would love to hear your thoughts

Those Who Are Giving Glucosamine
Sail_Away replied to Boronia's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Boronia I'm so pleased to hear it sounds like it might be working… it can take awhile and may or may not work for your dog but like I said it did wonders for mine! Pleased you were able to give it a go and the WA company was helpful. I looked back on some videos I had of my last girl before putting her on synflex and her limping was really bad - always worse in winter of course but in her last few years it definitely improved to the point you wouldn't know anything was wrong. Give us an update in a few months or so when it should really start taking affect -

Boronia - Have you noticed any improvement using the Synflex yet?? Might be a bit early to tell but just wondering how you are finding it
