  1. Everyone kind of missed my point. Arguing it is the wrong breed - whatever. The dogs involved were staffy-like. The general public doesn't really respond to the argument that they were not "Staffies" and they were actually "Staffy-Like" or "Staffy Crosses". My only point was that previously tabloid-style sites would default to the snarling aggressive stock image. They're still getting the breeds wrong (maybe) but the key difference is they are now no longer giving the readers false impressions of the breed, they are specifically including a friendly photo. Focusing on the reporting of the wrong breed etc is kind of detracting from the discussion that should be taking place - encouraging responsible dog ownership.
  2. Some dog owners just don't deserve dogs. Previously involved in an attack on the owners property and they then let a tradie in without restraining the dogs? If nothing was done after the first attack (in terms of resolving the aggressive behaviour) then the owner needs to be charged. On a different note this is probably one of the first times I've seen a newspaper use a neutral to positive photo: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/hills-shire-times/tradie-mauled-by-three-dogs-at--kenthurst-in-horror-attack/news-story/300049d80783eb76e57a248b30d8f9ba
  3. What is controlled barking? I've obviously been out of training for too long.
  4. Huskies: Fur. End of story. Behaviour wise after my first I don't find them extremely challenging but they're certainly a handful for first time owners.
  5. World for Pets is definitely the place to go. Huski put us onto them and they're well worth the drive. If you're getting heaps order it in advance though and then they box it for you. Way easier.
  6. http://www.instincto.com.au/ Bought a bunch from them. Duck frames, Roo tail, Roo side, Mullet. Few other things but I can't remember. Pretty decent value and good quality raw food. Not dirt cheap but not to expensive either. I think I spent about $200 and it'll last our 2 raw eaters 3 months minimum with the non-raw eater getting bones every now and then.
  7. We have one fussy dog. When he first came we had to mix sardines in his kibble. He would eat the sardines and leave the kibble. Once we moved to earthborn (I think that's the name of it) he wolfed it down. It is a super premium so rather exxy though.
  8. Yep, I use Ed and Leerburg interchangeably. I love Michael Ellis, he is great.
  9. I'm not a big fan of any DVD that actually has Leerburg in it. I feel the Leerburg DVDs I purchased were the most wasteful dog related products I've bought. The Michael Ellis ones are pretty good though.
  10. Ditto to this. Our dogs probably see our vet once every year or two, excluding Gizmo because he never has any issues requiring the vet. We're probably at the vet on average once every 1-3 months for any number of our animals so don't really need the "annual checkup" type system.
  11. I used to take my two dog model one to the pub after work, we'd have contests on who could withstand the highest levels for certain periods of time to determine who bought the next round. It was quite normal to have no winner.
  12. The only one of my dogs to be okay with the vibrate was my working dog - all of our other dogs are scared shit less of it.
  13. RBBS will active chase away Eastern Browns - you're better off having RBBS around than browns. Also baby RBBS are independent from birth, so one doesn't necessarily mean more, they're born at around 10-15cm and leave the nest almost immediately.
  14. I've seen lines of labs bred specifically for scent detection. They were pretty intense, and they were rigs. Almost pure muscle. I don't like that look but they were in insanely good shape.
  15. Could it be because you expected him to be harder, so put more energy effort into teaching him to relax and/or enforcing rules and boundaries? Whether it was a concious effort or not.
  16. I didn't see a single person say that. That said, I disagree with almost your entire post and believe you can easily teach a dog to relax by teaching it to adopt a body position or to remain in a crate/lay down. Considering both of the people who mentioned mat/crates were Huski and I, both who have experience with extremely high drive and high energy dogs then I think it's safe to say we're not theory crafting and our recommendations come from our experience.
  17. The dog you talk about is not HA. Put your finger in I do. If you like I will get it out for you. It is in D block the last kennel row. I do not wish to hijack this thread and I am not affiliated to any rescue group. But I am a volunteer at the Blacktown AHF. A volunteer from its earliest days. And for 2 days now I have been stewing over comments made on this thread regarding the above mentioned comments by NotMidol. I challenged you regarding this dog and your only come back was we agree to disagree. I will challenge you again to meet me at the AHF tomorrow Saturday 26/1/13 at 9.00am yes they are open, to assess this dog seeing you have stated that you are not a beginner in dog behaviour. This dog is neither human or dog aggressive and with a few hrs training it will be stock proof. Finally this dog is very intelligent and in fact has a acute sense to be able to single out frauds. Hope to see you tomorrow at 9.00 am as I have cancelled a appointment to prove you wrong. Once again sorry for this rant as it does not pertain to the topic. Sorry, I work weekends. That said, what makes you think you're even referring to the same dog as I am?
  18. Some dogs are just naturally more alert and highly strung. I'd just teach a command to send the dog to his bed, sit, sleep, whatever. Easiest solution.
  19. My sisters vet told her not to feed bones or raw meat to her dog till it is 6 months, so not necessarily a stupid question. I told her to do it anyway, she has a large dog who gets bored so easily. Some big bones kept it chewing for ages. Environmental enrichment is the best boredom buster ever and is the reason I love pigs heads.
  20. Based on what does it seem like a necessary part of a raw diet (I am unsure what "the" raw diet is, you might be referring to a specific raw diet). I try and roughly follow a prey model diet, I might not feed entire animals but I go as whole as I can. I feed offal, but I know many, many people who feed raw food no offal who have incredibly healthy dogs. Till some decent studies are done, we're only guessing and making observations based on our own dogs which is fine. I personally notice no difference in my dogs whether I feed them straight chicken frames for a month or a loose prey model diet. Coat, poo, everything stays the same.
  21. Was heading there today but by time I got around to it peak hour had started - didn't want to go from Parra out west during peak hour. Will hit them up tomorrow morning or Monday.
  22. There have been almost no decent studies on it. I feed offal, but I don't believe it is necessary at all.
  23. The dog you talk about is not HA. Then we agree to disagree :) Assuming we are of course talking about the same dog.
  24. I think regardless of the law, ethically, no one should be releasing dogs unsuitable for rehoming. Ever.
