Wrong. Their digestive system is pretty much exactly the same (minus the slightly better ability to digest and use carbs).

Cooking meats isn't actually quite as bad as everyone says but there is some loss of vitamins so it's not the same as uncooked (from memory it's about 20% depending on method). Cooked meat is somewhat easier to digest than raw, but since we're talking about a puppy there really is no need to cook. Pups normally adapt quickly and don't need transition times. In most cases cooking is just a waste of time and frankly just unnecessary as raw is ideal for a healthy dog. I'd consider cooking for a sickly or weak, recovering dog that cannot handle any extra stress. Luvsdogs' post is good. I agree mince isn't something you should spend your money on.

What Constitutes A "pit Bull Terrier"
blakkjackal replied to GABBA's topic in General Dog Discussion
You happen to remember the name of that dogman? Interesting, as even Mr Colby bred several champions/grand champions and they are considered one of the first "modern", more or less pure bred pit dogs. Unless that is what you mean by today's dogs? I agree with the rest too but nevertheless the breeding program was closely monitored and while they didn't necessarily breed for a certain type or for the sake of keeping the breed "pure" they went for the one distinguishing feature of the APBT, gameness. Pedigrees were also recorded pretty much from the start. Has anyone heard of the Irish Ch Stormer? He was a battle cross, staff x bull terrier and proved himself both in the pit and as a producer. He was used over Irish SBTs and every dog with him in their ped isn't considered any less pure bred than the one without. Function before form. E: I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the different registries, ADBA isn't quite what it used to be and we can't forget that the first reg. matching APBTs were indeed UKC-registered. There's still; "old time" registries around though, that actually care about the pedigrees of the dogs and won't register just about everything (do I need to say... Whopper?) unlike the major organisations. -
This is pretty sweet. Although the boring and "no fun" side of me wants to remind everyone that pit bulls do have a tendency of getting into fights more easily than some other breeds. And it's not pretty.

Amstaff Getting Aggresive Towards Me
blakkjackal replied to chris001's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm all for this person seeking professional advise asap as the first post suggests that the owner isn't quite certain about what's going on. IMO if your dog behaves in a way you would describe aggressive, then consult someone more knowledgeable. If it turns out not to be aggression after all, then great! If your assumptions were right then well, you've got help close by. Edit: I think I remember OP from his previous thread. I hope your other pup went to a good home. -
Amstaff Getting Aggresive Towards Me
blakkjackal replied to chris001's topic in General Dog Discussion
People are using the term "aggressive" a bit too loosely these days. I agree with Runamuk_AST. From what I've read this sounds like a confident, maybe a little boisterous puppy but not aggressive or dominant. He really is only a baby at 5 months and will behave like one too for a while still. :) -
Best Bones For Keeping Teeth Healthy?
blakkjackal replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
...But you can dramatically reduce the risk by only feeding appropriately sized bones. Chicken wings and chicken necks are a choking hazard. Try a chicken quarter or a turkey neck instead. :) Even small dogs can handle these, they've got the same set of teeth as their larger counterparts! -

Either way I will continue to feed frozen as I haven had no negative effects whatsoever -- in fact it saves me time, worry and to what I have noticed it only benefits my dog. He will be occupied for much longer, his teeth will get a good scrub down and in summer time it keeps him cool. Mind you I do not feed bare bones and the whole term "bone" is a bit misleading when I'm talking about my dog's meals. They are always more meat than bone. edit: I'm not saying you should all feed frozen. Know your dog. It works for me and this particular animal, but it might not work for you. I however disagree with the "unnatural" argument. -

I don't see how feeding frozen is unnatural as wolves commonly reside in arctic areas. :p So do the wolves catch their food & put it in cold storage until later? Have any of your dogs ever sustained freezer burns to the tongue or lips? Nope to the freezer burn.Wolves will hide food for later and in winter time this means burying it in snow. They will also eat off a carcass if they come across one, frozen or not. My old dog would bury his "leftovers" in snow too and heck yes they freeze when the temperature is closer to -30 degrees. I don't feed bare bones so once the dog gets to the actual bone it has already defrosted a fair bit. -

Freezing slows them down. More work involved in eating. As far as I know it doesn't affect bones in any way. I mean, otherwise you should stop storing your meat in the freezer as the bone wouldn't magically be restored to its original condition after being thawed. It's also a convenience thing. I always forget to take food out to thaw. -

I don't either. I'm actually quite horrified about the whole marrow bone hype. Beef leg bones are super dense and total tooth wreckers.. I don't see how feeding frozen is unnatural as wolves commonly reside in arctic areas. :p -
Colour Dilution Alopecia (CDA), a condition reasonably common in dilute colours, regardless of breed. I've probably seen more solid red and black dogs than dogs with tan points. :D
-
I believe it's possible but I've yet to see one, not even sure if the colour is recognised as the gallery claims to have pics of every recognised colour. This is Australian kelpies though, things could be (and probably are) different with working kelpies. They often come in black & tan right?

Best Bones For Keeping Teeth Healthy?

I thought I'd never be able to find them as I don't live near any abattoirs, farms or anything but one day... I asked my local butcher and they're able to order them in for a fair price. :) -

Pig's heads. Or sheep, goat, whatever you can find. They're brilliant dentists! Feed frozen for even better results. -
Yep! I actually automatically thought of Sweden when I saw the title of this thread. They've even got a pretty good online kelpie gallery.
-
I can only speak of Northern/Central Europe, but they are not unheard of at all. Actually, they're gaining popularity. Working kelpies aren't as common though and they could be considered rare. They're a fairly popular breed for agility among border collies.
-
I've noticed a lot of butchers cut across the bone for briskets, turning them into neat little choking squares. That's why I'd rather get whole flaps and cut them up myself, I've never had problems feeding out ribs that have been cut between the bones. Agree....I wish that I could find a butcher that would just leave them alone.....Obviously these butchers that cut them up into nice little choking squares don't have dogs of their own. I used to ask mine to leave them whole and he would do so.
-
Ghost tanpoint perhaps?
-
wow! if I didn't know any better I'd be asking it that's a border collie/kelpie cross, with maybe even a bit of greyhound in there! I couldn't be more wrong. She could very well be one as technically an alaskan husky is anything bred for racing purposes (actually quite often they are GSP mixes).

What Constitutes A "pit Bull Terrier"
blakkjackal replied to GABBA's topic in General Dog Discussion
No. No no no no no. This is the exact reason BSL has such an impact on "pit bulls" -- because everything remotely looking like one is one. Pit bull is short for American Pit Bull Terrier. Nothing else. -
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/heineken-dog-fight-protest.shtml That was my first thought too.

The racy, slender husky is the original sled dog type, nothing like the black & white blue eyed fluffballs... Look up any top musher and their dogs, they are all of the working type and the range of colours is great -- I've even seen a few piebald ones. Alaskan huskies are a whole different thing, they indeed aren't a breed at all but more of a modern sled dog type specifically bred for racing. Quite often they are hound crosses.
-
That's the right kind of husky! Beautiful, I too hope she is found safe asap.
