  1. Thank you everyone! She is stable. They are currently worried about respiration pneumonia. So much regurgitation is causing possible oesophagus problems. Such a stress. I had never even heard of pyo. She was meant to be bred after having got my breeders prefix I had no luck with a mating last season so my partner was fuming at the money we had to spend to only desex her nothing worse than when a partner doesn't support you! He comes from a farm and says you should just shoot them if they are sick. Could never ever in my life, they're like children!!. The total is at $12,500 now. The vet has her in the hospital tonight again but hopefully tomorrow she can go to a normal vet as I don't know how much more I can afford/borrow. The vet saw how distressed I was and had heard my partner tell me to put her down and get very angry so he was so kind to keep her in for free tonight for me. fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. Hi everyone, I really need some advice from anyone who has gone through this with their dog or knows anything about it. My dog was ill on Tuesday night, I took her to the emergency vet at 10pm. The vet said she had closed pyometra and needed surgery immediately ( $6000 ). With a struggle to sort out funds as my partner told me to put her down I got it done right then and there. Unfortunately it had ruptured and was leaking through her stomach. She was cleaned out with 20 litres of saline which was the most the vet said he has ever had to use. Since then I have been quoted $1000 per night and she has been in for 3 nights. Day one was her resting unable to move and eat and she had 2 drainage lines in her, a drip and pain relief through another tube. Day 2 she stood up and came over to me ( took about 3 steps) and lay her head down. Still no food, bloods were okay but regurgitating kept happening. Today is day 3, she can move around, still draining about 250mls per day through the drainage lines. Ate maybe one teaspoon of chicken. Keeps regurgitating still which the doc said is bad. I'm running out of funds and I'm so scared. Can anyone tell me of any stories of surgery after closed pyometra or any advice on what I can do to help her or even how long it took your dog to get better. I'm clutching at straws and I'm so scared. Thank you xxxx
  3. Hi All, Looking for some advice on my 7 month old Staffy. When I first bought her at 8weeks old I noticed a small patch on her nose of not much hair, the size of half a pea. Slowly she started to lose more hair on her head in patches. I took her to the vet and had a scraping and they said she had demodectic mites. She had 5 injections and they started to go away. That was about 8 weeks ago. Now I have noticed slowly her neck is completely hairless and scabby and her head is loosing patches of hair and tiny patches now down her back. To look at her she looks fine but its when you see her on different angles you can see all of these patches. I am going to go back to the vet this week and get another scraping and start over with the needles again. Does anyone have any other advice on things I can do to help her? Is it my fault she's gotten mites? She was bought from a reputable breeder also who has been really helpful in offering advice when I first noticed it. thanks in advance!!!
  4. Hi all, I just wanted to seek some advice regarding my 6 month old Staffy. I was doing the dishes today and looked outside to notice she was chewing something out in the backyard. I walked over to the glass window and thought it was just a bone at first. I decided to double check as I had only just raided the garden for bones to throw. I see it is a dried up blue tongue lizard that she is chewing on. It was so dry it was like raw hide and she was trying to break it apart. I tried to sneak over to grab it out of her mouth but she is so fast and started running with it and as I was trying to get to her she had swallowed the whole thing! Now I am really freaking out that I will have to go to the emergency. Does anyone know if this is okay? My two staffs often kill them, but I just go throw them out as soon as I see them. Obviously this one had been drying out in the garden. Any advice would be great. I realise taking her to the vet would probably be best right now. But she seems fine and if I can save myself the $600 plus it will probably cost to her have checked and stomach pumped right now that would be great. Thanks in advance!!
  5. Hi, Is this lime to get rid of dog smell? How do you apply it? I was wandering if their were any remedies for smell x
  6. My puppy lovesss boxes!!! But yes, certainly annoying to clean up but easily done with the broom, and hey as long as they were occupied! I do the same stuff, love the wobblers, and kongs.. I also bought an aussie dog home alone bungee with ball... loooves that! It lasted my last staffy around 2 years before it was completely destroyed, well worth the money. I also do the ice cream containers with pigs ears etc filled with water then frozen into a super big ice cube. Hiding bones/toys.. I use a sandpit also with stuff hidden, she absolutely loves it! In terms of bedding I have some large thick blankets and heshen (sp?) for her to sleep on as I was sick of cleaning up bed stuffing!!
  7. Hi Piper, Went well thank you! He does have conjunctivitis, but their is no damage to his cornea after doing a liquid dye test ( thank goodness!!) and I just need to apply a cream into both eyes twice a day for the next week. Glad I took all of your advice and went to the vet, would of hated myself if some permanent damage had been done. He's got me $540 this week on training with Jane Harper and the vet and new kongs lol expensive little things sometimes :) but you would never be without them !!!
  8. Thank you everyone ! I used water to wipe it just to be safe and I rung my normal vet and explained the situation and said it was an emergency being his eyes are you all suggested, I visit the vet in an hour. Thanks Taketwo- I wasn't aware that it meant something else was the underlying problem as I had also noticed some weight loss today- so glad I've got him straight in this morning and didn't wait as you all suggested, much appreciated everyone thanks!!!
  9. Thanks all!! I will ring everywhere and make sure someone see's him if not he'll be going straight to the emergency thanks :)
  10. Hi all, I came home from work today to see my staffs eye was red and had gunk and was watery. He must be rubbing it as some of the hair around his eye is missing. I am thinking this is conjunctivitis but am not sure.. I rung around vets and everyone is booked up with tomorrow being Saturday. Does anyone have a home remedy I could use to clean his eye to hold him over until the monday vet visit.. Thanks x
  11. Oh I felt furious at him, considering he considers himself a reputable ethical breeder - to recommend me to rehome him to a byb was horrifying!! He went on to say many other horrible things that disgusted me and I would certainly never recommend anyone to buy puppies from him if this was the advice he was handing out to me! Sorry I should clarify I was disheartened because I felt like maybe no behaviourist would help me with my staffy, but as my partner had said to me, that's only one persons opinion and their are lots of other people to try!
  12. Old bones are going straight to the bin! Hadn't even crossed my mind about the bacteria from his old bones making her stomach feel sick, thanks!
  13. Ok great thanks :) Will go get her some!!!
  14. Just a quick question.. what age is it okay to give a dog bones? I have noticed my pup keeps finding the bones in the yard that belong to my older dog and having a good chew on them.. Wanted to know when it's okay to give her bones? She's 9 weeks at the moment. Thanks!
  15. I had never thought to put all of his food into a Kong. He loves the wobbler! One of the only items to survive his chewing.. even the new pup has figured it out and loves it also. I will look into the crate training as it sounds like a good idea and several people have suggested it. Thanks I appreciate your advice and will take him to Dr Cam as I was beginning to feel like I had created the temperament somehow. When my staff turned 1 the breeder offered to take him back and rehome him and give me another puppy from a future litter due to his temperament but of course I had fallen in love with him and she has been very supportive in helping me to find other avenues to help him I felt disheartened after a brisbane based behaviourist on Wednesday who owns kennels and also breeds suggested I rehome him to a backyard breeder before I desex him as once I desex him he is no longer of any value to anyone. Which of course annoyed me as he is not a vicious dog and he does not need rehoming it's just he and I both need training. This behaviourist takes the dogs from 1-4 weeks and trains them on his property. I contacted Jane Harper and she is coming out on Tuesday and beginning a 6 week training programme with me and the dog. Thanks heaps for all the advice!
