Pet Dogs More Friendly Than Frightening When Put To The Test
mixeduppup replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
So do I. I said that he has been obedience trained and is well socialised which he has been. He is a very lovely dog with every as long as we are home, otherwise he barks, he's never bitten but he may if some crazy person tried to attack his home. He loves chasing birds and isn't a big barker for an LGD. In the last 4-5 months he's become a bit more serious but he's still a clown, he used to love going for walks through town and meeting everyone and loved the vet, but with all the stray dogs I've put a hold on walks. At the end of the day he's an LGD and will bark and guard as it's in his nature to do so and I won't take his breeding for granted. Tell me if I've missed anything out. Poor MUP, did you reject Clyde at some stage? Is acting a bit like a lover scorned. I guess you can't get along with everyone. I'm not taking this thread OT though, it's all good. :) -

I can't keep up with how many personalities your dog has. What's your issue? He's well socialised but protective of the house and property. He lets certain people in and the rest he won't let in unless we say it's ok. Hope that clears things up. -
but it's your Mum's house so you possibly didn't have much choice anyway. Same as you couldn't take your in season bitch in the car because it wasn't your car. Exactly. Hence the reason I said "if I had the choice" :D

We had family come and stay ;last year, they hated how the dogs could just walk in and out as they liked and weren't too impressed, but at the end of the day I prefer the dogs over them so there was no question as to who I would have kicked out if I had the choice.

I thought in Christmas everything would speed up and be really busy, but it seems to have gone the other way. Hardly any pound dogs seem to be moving at all. Is this normal for this time of year?

Yes. It's not always the owner that is behind it. I also think that because there is a set against euthanasia in society, people don't really consider it as an option or don't feel capable of doing it. For a lot of these oldies it would be less disruptive and kinder on them to call the vet and have them PTS at home. Yes I have made plans for my older few to be PTS if something was to happen to me Sometimes people cam't do the pts bit They take them to the pound instead. In all honesty I think that is the coward's route. If you have a dog you commit to it for its whole life, not until you're too scared to man up when things get bad and it's at its end. Taking an old family pet to the pound is such a gutless thing to do and if any of my friends did that I would find it hard to feel about them the same way, ever again. Is this addressed to me? I am responding to Eyeopener's post and the owner is not able (dead?) to care for her dogs anymore. I was just saying it in general, not to you. :)

Not just that but I've spoke to quite a few people that would rather pay the $50 surrender fee than a euth fee.

I've worked with bullbreeds and I know exactly what you're saying lol LGDs will protect whether you want the to or not, that why you need to set up a system where only the people with bad intentions get an introduction -

Living with an LGD you live with the risk that if not properly restrained someone could be bitten if he saw fit (touch wood he never has). I don't take his breeding for granted, nor his extensive socialisation, as his guarding and protective instincts are inherent and inbuilt. Everyone that visits are aware of his presence and the sign on the gate, simply stating not to come into the backyard but beep. Plus locks when we're not home. If people are dumb enough to climb the gate or ignore the sign or dog standing there barking at them then they're stupid enough to bet bitten. We have a right to have our houses guarded, we have a right to feel that our home and our belongings are protected and if our dogs can do that for us then they should be able to. Anyone that comes in the backyard ( apart from people he knows and likes) without us being there is most likely up to no good and he'll get his LGD on and protect the joint with a bite if needs be and that makes me happy to know my house and belongings are safe whilst I'm not there. -
Just When I Thought I'd Heard It All

I'm not a rescue but I've had a few people who were given my number over the years asking for/if I knew of any undesexed dogs. I had one lady call me up asking for an entire male rott to put to her GSD, even to borrow just for service. I told her that I didn't know of any rotties needing to be rehomed but informed her that she wasn't going to get much luck as cross breeding is frowned upon. She told me that she had one and they're the best dogs and I managed to convince her to call a few big dog rescues that would most likely have a cross of those breeds but I still think she wanted to breed. A lot of people just make up an excuse because they like the idea of puppies, they don't realise the cost involved, not only monetary but the life of the pups they produce as well. -

I think that maybe if the person was dress liked a regular person and not in huge get-up they may not be so lucky. -

I watched it again and I'm a bit worried that burglars are going to see this and think "" and go and steal everything from places with dogs -
God, I could just see my dogs in there, running around like idiots. I'm pretty sure all the trees would be horizontal by the time they finished. They're just not white house material
-
Not so, have you seen these? :D Ride On Unicorn OMG I NEEED IT!

Thank you so much, I was thinking a pegasus or centaur but I realise now that they wouldn't suit my situation at all. :D

I'd go another lab -
they only like to eat cold meat on hot days or frozen bones. Dry food is rarely popular, unless you're a particular Jack Russell
