I got a little terrier mix out of the pound who was terrified of everyone but me, it's been 7 months and he now comes up to lick my mum and lets her pat him for a few seconds. It can take ages. We were advised by the behaviourist to just take it slow and it's working. Maybe get a good behaviourist for your girl too just to have a better look at the situation from a neutral point of view. Good luck!

3 Oldies And An Odd Situation
mixeduppup replied to mixeduppup's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I've tried calling every day this week and she hasn't picked up so I don't know. I'll try again tomorrow but after that I guess the ball's in her court. -
Don't let them get to creep and never reward it if they do. Get back to them before creep, even if it's a second.

That sounds great ! Hope it all works out . (I don't consider 25 kg 'big' though .. ? ) That's a pretty average size, but I suppose if you were used to small dogs it would be. I consider big over 40kgs or so. Glad you're getting the help you need and you're on the right forum for getting great advice.

Thanks everyone, I'll give her the information for AWL, that sounds like a great idea. Are they statewide in NSW? -

3 Oldies And An Odd Situation
mixeduppup replied to mixeduppup's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
She says she's 78 and she's afraid she'll go to sleep and not wake up again and her pets would be left all alone. She was adamant she wanted them pts until i gave her alternatives and now she wants some numbers. -

I will suggest that to her on Monday as well. She was quite distressed today so I'll have a better chat with her on Monday and suggest that. Good idea. ETA: Would still need some rescues that would take older dogs of that breed. -
I had a phone call today at work from an older lady who wanted to put her 5 animals down, 2 cats and 3 dogs. I asked her why and she said that she was getting on and she decided it was best to have them put down instead of her not waking up one day and them going to the pound. I had a chat with her and informed her about rescue organisations as she didn't know they existed and she asked if I could get her the numbers of some rescues that may take her 3 little dogs, all JRT mini foxy crosses. Two are about 11 and the other is 10. I said I would try to find rescues that could perhaps help her out before we go straight to euthanasia. So does anyone know any rescues that deal with oldies of this breed and this type of situation? Thanks

I worked with quite a few catahoulas in the states which were mostly hunting dogs. I really enjoyed them, they are very determined but all were very personable and got on well with most of the other dogs. They are very driven and most of the males would try to put it over you (one poor girl in the shelter had it put over her a few times as she was just too much of a push over and they took advantage of that) From what I've seen they are a wonderful breed but definitely not for everyone. I also think they need to be used for what they were bred to do as it seems very ingrained.

I'm thinking that her house was marked by burglars as Perse said or someone is having a laugh. I agree that they would hardly dust a ribbon someone allegedly found outside their house just in case it was put their by dog thieves. My friend is locking up her dogs when she isn't there and has bought locks for the gate, hopefully that will deter them if it is criminal.

I've met both, there is an amazing difference in their energy levels.

Maremmas are big barkers and there is no way they'd chase a ball. I second the suggestion that they contact Andrea - they really need a specific type of home! Is there anyway you could really get across how important it is that this dog not be passed on to just anyone? I agree that they're not suitable for this situation but I shall disagree with you on the ball chasing. I have an avid fetcher here

Cairn Terrier Needing Rescue Or Home
mixeduppup replied to efowler's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Cairns are one of my favourite little breeds! She looks lovely! -
I own a dog here that never passed the biting stage because no one taught her it was wrong. It's much harder to teach an older dog to stop mouthing and biting than it is a young puppy and it's an ongoing battle but she is improving. You're getting some wonderful advice but the key is whoever's advice you choose you MUST be consistent and not back down. If you give dogs an inch they'll naturally take a mile and puppies need to know boundaries and what is acceptable and that takes time and dedication. Puppies are extremely vocal sometimes and yelping doesn't always mean pain, sometimes it's just a shout of disapproval or surprise. You have to get passed how you feel and your emotions so that you can focus on creating a well-rounded and polite canine citizen.
