  1. Yeah because bull mastiffs look so much and act so much like pit bulls. I agree that certain breeds are built like tanks and have the weaponry to attack but are no more likely to use that than another breed if raised correctly. That is written by someone that doesn't even know the basics about dogs. This is going to be like the time GSDs were banned. RIDICULOUS!
  2. Sounds like resource guarding mixed with prey drive. Very sad.
  3. I have to say that breed specific legislation is in my opinion not the way to go, as any dog is capable of attacking a human being regardless of breed. I think what would be more beneficial is a short course that dog owners are required to take to learn the basics of dog behaviour and warning signals and what to do to prevent an attack. This would give people the knowledge they need to recognise when a dog is producing signs that it is unbalanced in a situation and attacks would hopefully be stopped before they happened. Prevention is better than cure. Again my heart goes out to this family.
  4. What a horrible situation. My heart goes out to the little boy's family.
  5. Yeah, he's probably just watching the world go by but when you're home he's otherwise engaged with you.
  6. That doesn't sound like anxiety, just waiting and loyalty.
  7. I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying that the power of stupid people in large groups should not be underestimated.
  8. They pit them against the other dogs to test instinct. They aren't stealing people's pets to do it. Like I said they have a surplus of their own dogs that are useless for the pit, plus their other fighters at their disposal. There's no point in taking the risk of being caught for theft and therefore exposing their entire disgusting operation (dogfighting is felony in the US and carries jail time) when there are many many dogs within their own and other fighters yards that can be used. Again, yes it happens occasionally, on a very small scale, from inexperienced idiots that just want to abuse animals and pretend that they are 'dog men', but it's not widespread, typical or commonly done with stolen dogs from people's backyards. We have to remember that organised dog fighting isn't just letting two dogs go at it for a short while. The dog has to be willing to cross the line and engage with the other dog over and over again, despite injury and exhaustion. They don't want a fast match that will be over in a flash, they want a match that will go for two hours and draw large amounts of money. Very, very few dogs have that ability - even when selectively bred from lines of 'champions'. Colby himself said how hard it was to get even one or two dogs in a litter that would do this. So therefore testing the dog on a dog with it's mouth tied and can't fight back or another animal is a pretty poor and useless test to see if the dog has what it takes to do what they want it to do. In fact it tells them nothing about whether the dog they are testing is worth keeping. That dog might be happy to go for a dog that won't fight back but buckle as soon as a dog does. Why would you use that test to decide which dogs to keep!? We're not talking about organised dog fighting here, we're talking about idiots with DA dogs. Sadly they are becoming the majority and not the minority and idiots will do idiotic things like steal dogs. It's a sad state of affairs and yes social media has a big part to play in putting the idea in their heads in the first place.
  9. Well I know in America bait dogs/animals are widely used to test instinct.
  10. They source their dogs by selective breeding. Having a dog that is game enough to fight in a Pit and keep crossing that line despite injury and exhaustion is very hard to achieve even when carefully and selectively breeding from parents with those traits, and requires very careful conditioning from a young age - the likelihood of finding such a dog by stealing adult family pets is so low, it's simply a stupid exercise when you can breed dogs much more easily and without the risk of getting caught by police stealing. Dogs are stolen sometimes, yes. But escaped doesn't necessarily = stolen and stolen doesn't necessarily = fighting. Maybe here or there an uneducated young idiot might have some grandiose ideas about stealing dogs for fighting (probably from seeing it posted all over facebook by animal advocates) and gives it a try. But I have yet to see any evidence for any of the claims I have ever read on facebook or on here about dogs being stolen for fighting. Hence why I asked the OP if there was any evidence of it. Yes, I'm doubtful, but if there is I'd really like to read about it. So they source bait dogs in selective breeding as well?
  11. Dog fighting exists and they source their dogs from somewhere. I agree that it isn't as prevalent that social media makes out but it is happening in some areas.
  12. I don't really know either breed, just saying what they told me. I've not had a lot to do with GSDs or Belgians. I'll take your word for it.
  13. Jane Redman (nee McColm) was a Cootamundra local who loved, bred and showed both Gordons and Cockers for many years. She passed away a Wednesday night after a sudden illness. From the funeral notice in today's paper. "A service of Thanksgiving for Jane will be held in the Wagga Wagga Crematorium Chapel Brunskill Rd on Wednesday the 7th of August, commencing at 11:30 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited." Jane was a lovely person who ran a successful grooming business in town for many years and I would often visit her and chat about dogs for hours. She will be very missed.
  14. People I know wanted to get a GSD a few years back but were put off by the gait and went with a Belgian shepherd instead. Similar temp but seems to a have a marked difference in movement.
  15. I've had 1 heart dog and I lost her in terrible circumstances. I sometimes think Maybe is my new heart dog but I still don't feel like I did with Nina. I sometimes think i'll never love another dog like I loved Nina.
  16. It seems to be more in show lines, working line shepherds are more upright and thus have different movement.
  17. I took my sheep to work today and take my dogs pretty regularly. The benefits of working at a vet hospital lol
  18. Might be because of the thin-skinned, sensitive sighthounds? I've never seen that after castration though. Poor fella
  19. If my dog ever did that, regardless of what the child did I would euthanise and this is coming form someone who loves working kelpies with a passion.
  20. Hmm I'd be inclined to call your vet and ask advice, even text them a photo. That's a bit too much blood imho.
  21. She may have bumped or it, chewed it or it could be irritated. Keep an eye on it and if it starts to swell, your dog seems unusually quiet or the blood increases then don't wait til tomorrow. If you are at all concerned it's better to be safe than sorry. ETA: After seeing pic, call your vet.
  22. How much are they bleeding? is it coming from where the suture goes into the skin or is it seeping from the incision site? Any swelling, bruising or heat around the surgical site or abdomen?
  23. Flick, Rev, Fluke, Naeve, Bloss, Breeze, Chessie and Brin
  24. About a little puppy found behind a mushroom patch in India. sweetest story ever
  25. Chriss i cannot emphasise the above enough !!! I have seen many SO-CALLED Trainer break Amstaffs and Pit's in minutes, and it's mainly due to the breeds reputation that people think these breeds need hard/harsh training methods and they will completely chrush your dog. The biggest threat to the Amstaff breed It's people commenting in a negative way on a breed they know "nothing" about, it's no wonder it's in trouble with BSL! lol...Haredown you cant be serious !! all dogs where bred/designed for a purpose, and that meant possesing a "specific" temperment, trigger or trait. That's EXACTLY how we get a "BREED" But saying that, dogs are individuals. I've met kelpies bred to work that don't have a hint of herding in them. Temperament traits vary widely and by describing a temp without the dog breed said you would get hundreds of breed suggestions from individual personal experiences with individual dogs of that breed.
