  1. Torque my kelpie has a naturally fearful nature and is often insecure around men and will stick her tail between her legs and run if they look at her the wrong way. It's quite frustrating constantly explaining that she hasn't been abused all the time. I need to get a coat that says "I'm not an abuse case just a headcase"
  2. Currently have 7 dogs here now. It's amazing how the dynamics can alter so much with just one dog added. I have the 6 dogs worked out really well with everything they need and then the 7th adds a whole new element. I always get comments on how quiet they are considering how many I ahve, we only hear them when we get a visitor or it's play time. I like to challenge myself obviously  .
  3. I guess I'm looking at more physical abuse, such as beating/kicking/hitting etc.
  4. So because I temp test in pounds people often ask me if a dog has been abused. I always tell them that there's no way to know for sure if a dog has been abused without actually seeing someone abusing a dog but with some dogs you can make an educated guess as to whether it has or not by behaviours that it displays and the dog's condition. I'm just wondering whether there are behaviours that we only see if the dog has been abused? Has there been a study done or is it purely guesswork? For me I just comment on a dog's behaviour and if people ask I tell them that I can't be certain and it's best to just work with what the dog is displaying today and only go forward.
  5. We have 6 dogs and a number of fosters come through. I exercise mine on my friend's property, in the backyard and take a different one to work each day I work so everyone gets a fair go.
  6. We had a rescue GR that we had to shave due to a high tick area.
  7. I'll never forget a few years ago when I went to have a look at a litter of kelpie puppies and the owner (nice lady) reached in to pat one of the puppies and a puppy next to it just savaged her hand at 7 weeks old. Blood all over her hand. She said he had done it before but to her foot and not as bad. Some dogs are just genetically wrong. This particular puppy was not put down but sold to an old farmer who is producing kelpies with aggressive temperaments by using him as a stud dog. I've never met puppies like them.
  8. (giving the pup enough time to develop properly) I think that culling isn't a bad idea at all. Culling was much more common back in the day and people weren't half as lenient with unacceptable behaviours and I honestly think that the quality of dogs has suffered in recent years due to trying to save and work with dogs that are genetically messed up. I'm not talking so much about pedigree breeders as I am about breeding dogs generally.
  9. working dogs are often culled in litters for poor temperaments. Not unusual.
  10. Maybe is a barker when stimulated. I go the old route and just tell her to shut up and then giver her they 'eye' and she puts her head down as if she's ashamed and walks away. Hounds are really noisy naturally so maybe distraction/prevention is better than cure?
  11. I'm actually getting a sign made up that says. 'The dogs are the doorbell. Don't come in, just wait"
  12. I don't normally comment in this type of thing but I feel I have to. Coming from someone who also posts on behalf of a pound. PR is very important and if I were Blacktown Pound I would be pretty upset the way Blacktown List is behaving in a popular public forum with my name attached to them. Maybe dial it back a bit BL and focus on the fact that negativity will only hurt the dogs you're trying to help. If you're going to argue perhaps go under your own name :)
  13. Yeah my Anatolian would literally devour anyone who broke into our house or yard, however in a normal situation he loves everyone and everything. Situation is really important too. Yup. Hence the reason both gates are closed and locked when I'm not home as he would have anyone who tried to come in. That's his job and that's why we have him, to protect our house and us. Yes, but if you had a worker come to your home & asked you to hang on to your dog, would you say 'No she's fine'??? Of course, if they are worried about my dog I wouldn't make them feel uncomfortable. If they just turned up and I didn't organise a visit I would be wary and just control him verbally as I would be wondering why this strange man has just turned up and wants me to put my large dog away and come into my yard. It's very much individual circumstance.
  14. My dog Maybe is the most loving dog and by far has the best temperament but all my other dogs get attention before she even gets acknowledged.

  16. If someone walks through two (locked when i'm not home) gates to get into my backyard with 6 dogs barking at them then they're probably brain damaged.
  17. Thanks DM! And Yes Maree, Carole and Jim are amazing! That little girl is just so sweet, I'm so glad she was given a chance.
  18. I own a maremma and know my dog very well and his behaviour around people. If I am there he is friendly and fine (although always watching) as I have socialised him up the wazoo but I never take his breeding for granted no matter how much i trust his history.
  19. I rarely walk my dogs now and when I do it's through pretty short streets or just through the main streets whilst I'm shopping. I used to love walking them through town but I've been rushed too many times. I now go out to my friend's property to run my dogs or give them a lot of mental stimulation instead. I feel your pain
  20. Tried that :) can you email me the file and I'll see if i can get it to work?
  21. My mum had a doberman who would let anyone in but good luck getting back out
