  1. The people featured in the linked article are camped at the Gayundah Coastal Arboretum. This is a waterfront park close to multiple high rise apartments at Woody Point.

I strongly suspect that the council has taken this step because of multiple complaints from the apartments in the area. I have relatives living nearby and have heard a constant litany of complaints from people in their building. I am pretty sure most of it is petty resentment that they have paid top dollar for their waterfront apartment and the homeless have paid nothing.

The real issue is, of course, that there is nowhere else for people to go. The whole idea of banning camping in a van (but allowing tents) assumes that the van dwellers can go to a caravan park but, as the article states, there are no vacancies in caravan parks.

As for banning them from having dogs, some of the homeless are in that state because they chose their pets over their rental. Talk about kicking someone when they are down. This same council until recently banned people from having more than one dog in a unit, and illegally declared dozens of dangerous dogs without proper authority.

  2. Great article, thanks. I was astounded that almost all dogs had German Shepherd breeding, until I read further on that the average number of breed types in each dog was 25! The GSD prevalence is likely just a founder effect.

I also wonder if the pups are getting any help from people (as the photo of the lady greeting the pups would imply). I gather that the biggest impediment to re-wilding of domestic dogs is their poor parental care post weaning, and most free-ranging dog populations depend on human help for the youngsters (according to Coppinger, anyway).

  3. Just to add to the above, I think 9years is the oldest any pet insurer will take on a new dog. For most, the cut-off is 8. The last few years have seen some new underwriters in the market, so there is more competition and more options than when Choice did the original comparison. Insurance is still very costly, and you would probably be better off self insuring. Don't forget that vet costs vary and, if you communicate your financial limitations to the right vet, they will avoid all but the most necessary diagnostics & treatment.

  4. From the NBC News article

(I am having no trouble accessing it, though not a subscriber):

An elderly man was killed and a woman critically injured by a small pack of dogs that attacked them and first responders who came to their aid Friday afternoon in San Antonio, officials said.

Two other people were bitten — one on a hand and the other, a city fire department captain, on a leg, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said at a news conference Friday. By Saturday evening, all three survivors had been treated and released from the hospital, the city's Animal Care Services and police departments said in a joint statement.

San Antonio police had arrested the owner of the dogs in connection with the attack.

The identity of the man who was killed has not been publicly released, and the medical examiner's office did not respond to a request for information Saturday. Police said he was 81 years old and the woman who was critically injured is 74. The city described her in a statement as his companion.

The couple were visiting relatives and had just stepped out of a vehicle shortly before 2 p.m. when at least two of the canines breached a gate on the property where they were kept and attacked, the city said.

The first city fire rescue crews on scene saw a bloodied man being dragged around a corner by dogs, Hood said. The first responders fended off the canines with pickaxes and pike poles, he said.

“This is not something normal for us,” the chief said. “We don’t usually show up and have to defend patients from animals.”

The man was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Hood said.

The suspect, Christian Alexander Moreno, 31, faces charges of possessing a dog involved in a fatal attack and injuring the elderly, both felonies, police said.

The three dogs involved in the attack or which were off their property at the time were euthanized, Animal Care Services said Saturday. The dogs were described as American Staffordshire Terriers.

The dogs, two females and a male, were quickly put in the custody of Animal Care Services after the attack, San Antonio Animal Care Services Director Shannon Sims.

Animal Care Services workers seized all the dogs at a property believed to be home of the three terriers, Sims said.

In 2021, dogs from the same residence were impounded by Animal Care Services after “fight” in which minor biting was noted, Sims said. The dogs were quarantined but then freed because a case wasn’t possible without an affidavit from a witness.

During the last two years, dogs from the same residence have been the subject of reports of unleashed canines displaying aggressive behavior, he said.

An additional "confirmed bite" case involving at least two of the dogs believed responsible for Friday's attack was reported in January, the city said.

Hood called the incident “horrific” and said firefighters took responsibility for protecting neighbors and themselves from the dogs.

“The firefighters were very heroic in this instance,” he said.

This case has led me down a rabbit hole of other fatal dog attacks. There are some pretty graphic videos out there, and some very idiotic owners.

  5. Interesting article about an Australian dog bred by early settlers specifically to hunt kangaroos. Apparently, it was adopted by native Australians as well, and used as a hunter and early warning system for the camp.
