and maybe now is a good time to bring this to public notice or something, so things improve? That is great idea. -
Dog Aggressive/reactive Guide Dog?
dogsaremyworld replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have become increasingly disillusioned with the Guide Dogs and Seeing Eye Dog associations over time. I have been a lifelong donater and supporter of the organisations, but will not give them any money any more. I personally know one person who does not need a guide dog, yet has one. The dog is treated as a pet, not a working dog, is obese, has pretty much all of its skills, and the owners of this dog constantly dodge reviews and visits. Considering it costs around $30,000 to train a dog, and the hard work trainers and volunteers put into thier dogs you would think they would be more attentive. The person that has this dog has NO need for it. She was diagnosed as having peripheral sight problems 25 years ago, and since then has had an astonshing 11 guide dogs. Yet, the dog is never in its harness guiding her, and she rarely goes out with the dog, except when she is trying to get into somewhere for free. She can quite happily navigate a crowded dark RSL, or a movie theatre, or frequent parties, or a shopping centre ALL by herself with NO dog and no one else for assistance. She drives a car, does her own shopping, goes to the pub or club to play the pokies, etc, etc, so has absolutely NO need for such a valuable resource, and yet these associations keep giving her these dogs, without thorough observation, and then when she has had enough of one, and I quote 'wants a younger dog around the house' she complains and then they are 'retired' - to god knows what! I also know another person who has one, who claims that the associations training is 'USELESS', so then spends a great portion of his time RETRAINING them, only to then complain to the organisations that they are 'untrained' and they take them back and give him another. I know of another person who genuinely needs a guide dog, whose dog led him into traffic and he was hit by a passing car. Since I have become aware of these sorts of things happening I have heard so many horrific stories about guide dogs, and the way the associations work, and have been left feeling extremely sad and bitter that people out there take advantage of these charities, and the charities seem to have no way of stopping them, and make no attempt to. I would imagine that NO guide dog should be dog aggresive, but after everything i have recently learnt it doesn't suprise me AT all. -
Ankc No Longer Recognising Flyball Titles

Why have they done that? -
Ive bought from them and found them great!

In the article in Dog News on this issues, I am sure that they said that they had tried to use DNA testing to clear up the issue on whether a cross-breed had been used further back in the lines, but the results were 'inconclusive'. I just feel sorry for all the people out there who bought pups on 'main register' IN THIS CASE, relying on the falsified information given to them by one man, only to find out that the parentage is in reality, not known, and most likely from an 'unregistered' dog. Imagine if they were thier foundation stock, investing that money, only to find that any progeny down the lines will forever be known as the ones with blank pedigrees.
-
That would be fantastic!

I don't really have a 'little black book' but i do keep a computer spreadsheets of our results for reference, and more so we remember what has happened when and where. The only time I put negative results down against a judge is if they are; rude extremely rough with the dogs place me last in my class - after all there is no point going under them again if they dislike my type of dog so much, and in one situation we had recently a dog was put up for a challenge that went lame in the ring, limping (against a complete line up of other sound dogs) I was not even in the challenge line up but after witnessing it, or even in the same breed (and it wasn't just me, most people that day saw it)but i REFUSE to go under that judge again. These are the only reasons I could find on my spreadsheet after 12 years of showing, and honestly the rude, rough and blind ones are extremely rare, most judges I find to be fantastic (even if i don't agree with thier decision on the day). Even though I keep this record, I have accidently entered under judges that I swore I wouldn't again!
-
Great idea, have saved for future reference also! Mine rarely need coats, and it seems just a shame to spend so much on them for so little time, so will definately use this!

I have two dogs, both male, won't mention the breed as I don't wish to incriminate, but in Group 7 med to large minority breed in this country, from the same breeder, who has become a mentor and a friend to me. They are co-owned, but when i got them the breeder assured me that he would not interfere with any decisions, but simply guide me in the right direction when i came across any problems. Fast forward four years, and I have been after a bitch to add to our kennel since I got the second boy two and a half years ago. He does not live in the same state as me, and i rarely see him, except for at shows, but we do facebook each other and phone every other week, or whenever we have good results. Every time i see a bitch advertised, or hear of one from word of mouth, I email him pics and pedigrees. For many reasons, he has rejected 47 different pups from kennels in Australia and overseas, and keeps promising me that he 'will get me one'. Reasons for rejecting the pups include; - the people are not nice - they are from puppy farmers - the lines do not match in - too big - too small - parents have HD - sister died early, no one knows why - don't like the grandfather - eyes weepy - tailset too high - havent had any experience with them before - screwed him over before - was mean in the ring to him - don't like the markings on the mother - didn't like the size of the foot - didn't like the colour - looked cowhocked in one picture - he heard the people sold substandard dogs to new people - he heard the people were getting out of showing and were just breeding for money - woman divorced his best friend - they won't give you a puppy so don't even try - etc, etc, etc, those are the ones i found when looking back in emails. For differing reasons, including his bitches not birthing bitches, to other people in our breed getting them, he has had around 8 litters in the past 4 years, and we still have no bitch puppy. He has also promised that he will get me one from other breeders, all who have had litters but still no dice. What do i do? If i get a bitch from someone else he will be difficult, and because he co-owns my dogs I am scared that he will be vengeful, but if i keep waiting I am doubtful I will ever get a bitch to add to our team. I really want to start my own lines, and kennel, and have had a prefix for over a year (since the last bitch he promised was coming, but he ended up selling it to someone else that he apparently owed a bitch to) I don't think I am a bad owner, I have shown both the boys to thier titles, and have won multiple BIG, RUBIS and RUBISS (just can't seem to crack that BIS!!!LOL) and I love them dearly, so I don't understand why this is happening!?!?!?! Some of the reasons that he has knocked back potential puppies are probably true, and I agreed with him, but the personal ones had nothing to do with the dogs. I personally have had no problems with any of the people, and have been offered many bitches that i have knocked back as I don't want to ruin the relationship i have with him. After all, he trusted me, a new exhibitor with his dogs and has been very helpful while i was learning to show. But I realised today that I have been offered a pup from almost every kennel in this country including some top winners, and ALL of them he has rejected for a reason or another, I really have no one else to go to. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Conformation Photos Needed- Any Breed
dogsaremyworld replied to Cosmolo's topic in General Dog Discussion
I can take a photo of my tibbies front for the 'bow legged' but they are meant to have it, so it may be a bit confusing, trying to demonstrate an incorrect bow, with a breed that it is correct for, if you know what I mean. Let me know though. -
Great Dane X, Life Expectancy
dogsaremyworld replied to Flow Won Smai's topic in General Dog Discussion
Someone was offended by that? Oh dear, what is the world coming to Lj was a craze? I still use my LJ more than I use my left hand :p Yeah, it often disappoints me that people are rather easily offended, or take offense on behalf of others. But on the other hand, it's no skin off my back to change it. I thought it was quite funny as well. And sometimes how i feel on certain internet forums (not mentioning any names LOL) -
if we live in the world against purebred dogs, all f1 cross-hybrids are 'apparently' healthier. In some cases this is true, but no designer dog gets the genetics the way that some breeders make it sound they do. In any cross-breed the type and number of genes that the progeny get from each parent differs greatly, and if they are crossing Malamutes with Newfy's for size, then you would find in a great number of pups the health problems from both breeds. You would also see Malumates with Newfy qualities and the reverse. Just because you want to increase the size does not mean that that's the only genetic marker you would recieve. You would not simply get a large malamute. You would get a jumbled up, messed up, version of a purebred dog. Or simply put a mutt. There are health problems within the purebred dog community, but at least within the breed you know what those problems are, the likelihood of those problems occuring within YOUR dog, and if you deal with a reputable, registered breeder, a qualified prediction of life expectancy, and size. Just because a breeder is registered does not make them reputable, but do your homework, and with the numbers of Malumate's around, Im sure you can find someone who breeds on the large side of the scale. BUT, if your heart is set on a giant Malamute, you may as well do the right thing, go to your local pound and rescue a large malumate-esque breed, because idiots who claim that they are breeding these as a 'breed', are simply puppy farmers, or designer dog farmers, or possibly even BYB's, and Im sure many of thier pups would eventually end up there. That way if you wish to look outside the pedigree dog community you are rescuing, instead of allowing puppy farmers and dog designers to profit from dangerous and largely unpredicatable breeding practices.
-
Nope there is no such thing as a giant version of the malamute. Woofa was probably just 'oversized'. The breed standard for the malamutes states that thier allowable sizes are as follows; Dogs 63.5 cm (25 ins) at the shoulders - 38.5 kg (85 lbs) Bitches 58.5 cm (23 ins) at the shoulder - 34 kg (75 lbs) All dogs within a breed vary depending on thier lines. Preferably they should sit in the size ranges outlined, but some are at the small end of the scale and some are larger. Woofa was probably just a dog that was bred from larger dogs. If someone has told you that it exists they are lying. Full stop. Probably just trying to justify why thier dogs are so much bigger than they should be. All I can suggest is if you prefer the larger sizes is to research on places like Dogzonline, or go to a local show, and find a breeder whose stock is on the bigger side. And most importantly make sure you buy from a registered repuatable breeder. :)

Great Dane X, Life Expectancy
dogsaremyworld replied to Flow Won Smai's topic in General Dog Discussion
As I am from the opposite size range of dogs (toys) i am curious why the bigger breeds such as Danes and mastiffs have such a shorter life expectancy than the smaller dogs? Perhaps someone informed could educate me? -
People missing thier calls because they do not have thier dogs ready! Or standing right in the entrance way while they are waiting to go in for 'intermediate' but you are there for baby puppy! Or people taking the wrong dog in to the wrong class in group, or people being really really loud in the ring (like calling the name of the dog and i don't mean conversation loud, i mean YELLING loud) and watching you struggle to get your dog to stop turning and looking at them, and them getting louder and louder and louder!
-
lol, don't worry not too excited. I'm not going to buy anything until the puppies are born, but I like to have my research done already. I'm the biggest worrier in our house - always coming up with potential problems - sometimes not quite realistic ones lol. Yes please don't get too excited yet. as said, SO MANY things can go wrong. We, ourselves, have been told we have been getting no less than four different pups, and for whatever reason eventually found out that it was not possible. Heartbreaking!

Strange Noises Coming From Dogs Stomach
dogsaremyworld replied to dogsaremyworld's topic in General Dog Discussion
This just worried me because he was quieter than usual, and the noises were REALLY loud, like you could hear them over the TV loud!
