It also depends what you are giving it for... if you are just giving it as a supplement the lower dose is ok (not preferred, but ok)... however, if you are giving it for a skin condition then the higher theraputic dose is needed Dan

Hi What exactly were the allergy tests that were done, who performed them (local vet, dermatologist?) and at what age did he have this done? All of these will have a bearing on false results in these tests.... Dan

There are very strong correlations between vaccination and atopic allergies too. I have some articles on this can can send you if you want. Dan

Ahhh, I've been wondering about using some Keri oil... You just answered that question for me Will give it a go, thanks. Dan

Ah, its a bummer at this point of testing... I remember it well Great that the new blood testing has come in... I had heard some rumours of it... Its a pain that you have to wait, but great that it can be sent over to the US... That's no more expensive than doing the intradermal testing anyways! Good luck with him... Let us know when you find out the results of the blood test. Once you know what you are fighting it makes it so much easier... I have found lots of ways to work with different atopic allergies, so I might have some ideas for you if he is allergic to similar things to my two. Oh, I forgot: Are you giving him Vit E at all?? That helps with the up take of the omega 3s and is also good for the skin... I give one cap a day with their fish oil (EPO in your case)... Might also be good on his skin too. Take care, Dan

Cod Liver Oil Or Flaxseed Oil?
zayda_asher replied to chooka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Actually I have gone through this with Nutritionalists and Dermatologists. The omega 3 in liver oil is negligent and not as good a source as fish body oil. If you are looking for omega 3s, which you are for itchies, you want fish body oil. The oil for omega 3 fish oil capsules is from the BODY of oily fish such as salmon, anchovies and mackerel not the liver. It is much higher quality and does not have the risks associated with OD on Vit A & D. A theraputic dose of omega 3s for an allergic dog (medium sized) is 3 capsules, containing 180mg of EPA each, a day. If the dog is larger or smaller is will need less or more as appropriate. Cheers, Dan -
Cod Liver Oil Or Flaxseed Oil?
zayda_asher replied to chooka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Cod liver oil is for Vit A, not Itchies! Vit A is easy to OD on too, so you need to be careful. For itchies you want fish body oil which has omega 3s... cold pressed fish oil is what you want, I prefer salmon oil as it is from a single source (one of my dogs is allergic to some of the other fish they use in the blends). I would use fish body oil over flax as many dogs get the itchies from flax as well... Dan -
Aww, that's sucky having to watch her go through something so awful Give her a big, but gentle, hug from me and a big hug to you too!! DanXO

You can't say a kibble is allergen free because it depends on what the dog is actually allergic too. Nothing is Hypoallergenic, its just that somethings will be more common for a lot of dogs to react to... but that doesn't help if your dog is allergic to that thing. Dan
-
Ah Pampa, that sucks  But at least you have an answer now... I hope you can get something sorted out with your girl and coming home!! Take care, Dan
-
Yep, sure can be allergic to anything!! Asher is allergic to tea tree (melaleuca family), dandelion (daisy family) and Burdock, all of which are used in alternative therapies! Both mine don't do as well with the malaseb, but are great with the episoothe! What's good for one may not work for another or be bad for another! Dan

Any time Its so hard having to pack everything up and sort through it isn't it?? Very stressful! Good luck with it all... hope it goes as smoothly as possible! Are you going to sedate your white girl? Dan
-
Glad you had a great day and I'm glad your girl did too, lucky the injuries were minor Good luck with the testing, hope the protocol is worked out and all is well! Dan

Yeah, one of my friends has a Staffy who is real allergic to oatmeal so she can't use any of those products... good luck with the JBS! Dan

I'm just checking on the link for one of the groups, when I have it I will PM them all to you Sorry to hear he is getting itchier... could be a few things: the change in weather, reaction to one of the meds, even the medicated shampoo drying him out (happens, sometimes you have to swap types to get one that is right for them) etc. Hope things settle, good luck working it out if it doesn't! Dan

Oh Pampa, this is awful ;) I have no experience with this sort of thing so I can't offer any advice... But feel free to PM / email if you need a shoulder to cry on, I can offer that! Take care and let us know how you go. Dan

Great news Zayda loved the venison when we got some, but I have to retest her on it as she had a reaction to something else at the same time and we couldn't tell what was from what! No, its not good to keep them on for long if you can help it! Esp, as you say, when they are young... Its so hard, but worth it in the long run!! Let me know if you want any of those group links for the other diets, if they have food allergies home prepared is great as you know exactly what they are getting and you can limit chemicals / preservatvies. Thank you, we are proud of her and we did have a very rough ride! This last 6 months has been hard though as both the dogs have been right off with this awful humid weather we have been having, Zayda started reacting by getting hives... First lot I came home and she was covered in golf ball sized lumps, looked like she'd developed an extra spine and other bones - really horrifying!! Well we are working on solving this issue now... With the return to cooler weather we have had no more hives, but a return in itchies... so I am starting to wonder if she is going to manifest different symptoms in the humid weather (seeing as how we normally don't have such weather here for such a prolonged period!)... We're off to see Sharon next Wednesday with both of them... Asher broke out in Staph with this weather too... Hopefully it will stay cool for a while and we can sort out some more things to put in place for the next bout of humidity!! Its still a long hard road, and they trip you up just when you think everything is going like a well oiled machine, cheeky buggers!! But you gotta love 'em!! Take care and keep us up dated! Dan

Maybe not in his (although I wouldn't lay a bet), but its certainly used in human grade!! Its also used as a preservative in a lot of cheap dried fruits too... not sure what else. I'm going to research this more, I've been meaning to for ages... In fact I'm trying to cut down the chemicals and crap in my house full stop. Hard work: chemicals and preservatives in everything!! But Asher is hugely sensitive and so am I to some stuff for that matter and I'm starting to think some of the things he has reactions to may be triggering things in me too... I use a mix of human grade and good quality pet meats for the furry ones. Glad to hear the info helped out, pleasure to help Hope those wee tackers of yours are doing well! Dan -

Well, I'm vegetarian so its not something I have looked into to solidly recently Nope, I think y'all are right, it would be less than in pet mince... But it has been linked to some nasty things in people too, like cancer. Dan -

I know its at quite high levels in things like hams... Can't say for sure as I a) didn't actually see the show, so I don't know what they were suggesting and b) am not sure what the exact level it is used at in people food. I do know, however, that I would take anything on a senstionalist program like Today Tonight with a grain of salt! I also know that there are a lot of study / health groups etc. that say it is a concern that it is used in people food and causes various health problems. Cheers, Dan
