  1. RIP Chilli. Sorry for your loss indigirl.
  2. I'm so sorry MsDani. I think you are making the right decision, but it doesn't make it any easier. Keeping you all in my thoughts.
  3. Sorry but I agree with them. Have seen it happen way too many times. Students come to Australia to study, get an animal and then dump it when they go back home. OK you might be different, but the rules are there for a reason.
  4. PRA is Progressive Retinal Atrophy. It basically means that the retina (the nerve tissue at the back of the eye that sends info to the brain) gradually atrophies/wastes away. The first signs are often night blindness and this usually starts at around 4-7 years. Gradually the vision gets worse and worse and the dog will eventually be completely blind. This usually happens by 6-8 years old. There is no cure and the dogs will also develop secondary cataracts, which often leads to glaucoma or uveitis.
  5. Two ways to try: 1) Tilt his head up so he is looking at the roof and drip the ointment from a height. 2) Wash your hands thoroughly. Put some ointment on the tip of your little finger, then use that finger to pull down the lower lid and smear the ointment into the eye as you go. You only need to get a tiny bit in the eye and then when he blinks, it will spread out. Give him a treat as soonas you've done it so he learns that meds = food. I would avoid head locks if possible especially with brachy dogs because if you are too firm you could proptose the globe. Also, if the cornea is fragile and you put the dog in a head lock, you could pop the eye.
  6. The cat will be fine holding on for 12hrs, but you can try the litter tray in the foot well. Definitely don't take her out of the car, on a harness or not. Far too risky. If she gets away from you, you'll never get her back.
  7. Do you need to take 2 days? It only takes about 11hrs and we always do it in 1 day. I wouldn't feed him before or during the trip, just give him watwr. And then normal dinner.
  8. Apples are fine, so is celery, spinach, etc. :)
  9. Haha good job catching it! Rabbits need to eat all the time, so if you don't have any hay on hand, pick some grass and load up its cage. Otherwise yes, keeping it in a cat cage with water will be fine until tomorrow. :)
  10. poodle3081, where do you get your geib buttercut blades from? I've just looked on Ebay and they are around $60 each.

    Insurance?

And I would also recommend taking it out as soon as you get your dog. The longer you wait, the more vet visits, the more 'history' there will be for the insurance company to use against you!
  12. Italian Greyhound. A bit fragile, but so gorgeous!
  13. They come in lots of sizes - from teeny tiny, to massive. They can be handy but we've found that most dogs hate them and they only fit certain dog head shapes. So cute though!
  14. GSDs are prone to CCD - Canine Compulsive Disorder. It can be very hard to deal with but some people manage to stop the behaviour.
  15. It normally comes back same day at our clinic, otherwise within 24hrs.
  16. I had that happen once - people asked me to mind their dog which they had adopted from me. I agreed and they said they'd give me all his food, etc. Well I was given a TINY bit of food that only lasted half the time, and when they got back, they gave me a cup from Movie World as a thank you... Never again!
  17. I would often call after the first night just to make sure everything was OK, then maybe a week later. With the super special ones, its very hard not to call every day!
  18. It can make dogs very groggy, but its great for pain. Hope you can get some answers soon.
  19. The vet probably wants her lean, not normal, so if she has said to lose 5kg, I'd do it. Being overweight is not healthy for dogs. Lean is always better.
  20. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8518372/animal-lover-killed-by-her-own-dogs A US college student who devoted her life to helping abandoned animals has been mauled to death in her home by a group of rescued dogs she had taken in. The body of 23-year-old Rebecca Carey was found in her Georgia home by her best friend Jackey Cira after she failed to turn up to work at a local animal shelter WSBTV reports. Ms Cira said there was "a lot of blood" where her friend had been killed. "When I first got there it looked like she had fallen and hit her head," she said. Animal control authorities seized five dogs from Ms Carey's home after her death. The two pit-bulls, two presas and a boxer mix have since been euthanased. Ms Carey's family have called her an "avid animal lover" in a statement. "Since the second grade when she read the book Throw Away Petsshe vowed to be a voice for all the animals," the statement reads. "Upon placing her first abandoned animal in a permanent home in 2003 she volunteered countless hours with rescue networks and animals shelters. "There she did what she loved the most: rescuing animals from untenable situations to find them safe, loving homes." Source: WSBTV Author: Martin Zavan, Approving editor: Matthew Henry
