I spent most of the night looking at youtube videos of dogs having seizures and I'm pretty sure it was a focal seizure. I wasn't able to get to the vet today but he has been perfectly normal ever since. Kirislin that is so odd about Beau - as you know he was here for several weeks and never had one. Poor little guy. If it was low blood sugar, would it resolve on its own? My son is diabetic and when his blood sugar is low, it stays low until he eats something. ETA: it didn't look like any of the EIC episodes I watched on youtube.

Also tell them to put aside money for health issues - entropion surgery, cherry eye surgery, airway surgery... Love the breed but far out they have their fair share of issues.

So beautiful! :)

Barriers To Formal Behavioural Assessment
*kirty* replied to Cosmolo's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I have stopped taking in foster dogs, except for the IGs, because I decided it was too risky. With the kids and all the animals here, it was just too much to chance. I had taken in a few dogs who were assessed, but not formally, and they were not what I expected and did not fit in here. My assessment of dogs is clearly different from other people's, but I also trust my gut when assessing dogs. My friend took on a foster recently and I didn't trust him with my little IG despite being reassured he tested fine with smalls. He later tried to rip my IG out of my arms and tried to kill my friend's cat. At least with the IGs they are tiny so can't do much damage, not that I've had any problems with them fitting in. ETA: I think some people apply a lot of bias or make excuses when assessing dogs and I don't think it is helpful. Eg so often I read 'snappy at the moment but would be fine in a quiet home' or 'funny with other dogs but should be fine once out of the pound'. Nobody knows what the dog will be like out of the pound and surely some caution should be taken when making these statements. Some dogs do act up at the pound through fear or whatever, but others act true to form and may even be worse when out. -
Hahaha too funny! Good on you Michelle. :)

We've done all the tests except VWB which is being done this week (that test is a nightmare to organise).

Christina there was nothing in the patk (footy oval) and he honestly raced ariund the whole time - no sniffing or anything. Yes we are wondering about his heart and also liver shunt. A hypo shouldnt resolve on its own I dont think. Harry's certainly dont. :) It was just odd because everything I know about seizures says they have some loss of or alteration of consciousness. He was aware the whole time.

Going to the vet tomorrow but just wanted to hear from people who have experienced seizures in dogs. Background info: Bruno is a 1yo Italian Greyhound who seems healthy but has had some weird medical issues - bled excessively during castration and then developed severe bruising and was very sick. Also has random episodes of pale gums and slow CRT. These issues are being investigated but we have no answers so far. He had a 2-3 minute flat-out zoomie session at offlead park which he'd never done before. He ran back to me and I put him on lead and picked him up. He then started acting really weird - his head started bobbing and he was shaking and writhing in my arms, kinda like he wanted to be put down. So I put him down and his front legs weren't working. His back legs seemed to work but his front legs would collapse underneath him and he kept face planting. He seemed to be conscious the whole time but his pupils were dilated and he looked terrified. His heart rate was fast, his gums were pale and his CRT was non existant. I picked him up and he kept writhing and shaking and bobbing his head. There was no panting or drooling or peeing or pooing. I called my vet but they were stuck with another emergency but then it all stopped anyway. It lasted about 3-4 minutes. He wasn't tired or confused afterwards and when we got home he wanted to run and play as usual. I checked his heart when we got home and couldn't hear any irregularities. Does this sound like a seizure? He wasn't stiff at all except when he was arching his back. It was the scariest, most horrible thing to see.

Mine get Advance Active and/or Supercoat Active. They also get RMBs about once a week plus raw meat, the occasional egg and any of our left over rice or pasta. The Iggies get small breed Advance or one of the better supermarket brands with Natures Gift cans mixed in.

I think it comes down to your individual situation and what you want. I have always had lots of animals and some came into our lives when the kids were very young. Some families find it hard to cope with toddlers or babies and can't imagine throwing a puppy into the mix. Others find they have lots of spare time while babies nap etc and its a great time for a puppy. No right or wrong answer I think.

You said she brings you her lead to go for walks - I hope you aren't walking her far. Large breed puppies should not be over-exercised. Environmental factors can cause hip displaysia as well.

5 Months Old Puppy Dies During Simple Surgery
*kirty* replied to Pockets's topic in General Dog Discussion
I doubt that pre-anaesthetic bloods would have shown anything related to this unfortunately. Dropping heart rates and respiratory rates are relatively common during anaesthetics but that is why someone should be watching the monitor and the patient at all times. If you notice it happening you can act on it quickly and usually rectify if. *touch wood* I've been working at my current clinic for several years and we've never lost a patient in that time. We routinely perform surgery on high-risk patients (very old, very young, airway problems, etc) but we have procedures in place to manage these patients. I still can't pm you pockets and don't want to post it here. -

I agree with dasha that the vet is equally responsible. -
X rays can show up arthritis - if the cartilage has worn down, the bones will look closer together indicating arthritis. ETA: if she is well behaved they should be able to x ray without a GA. My cat didn't even need one for his chest x ray. :)
-
It can take a good 24hrs for them to recover from a GA. And before/during surgery they are given a cocktail of drugs to sedate them, relieve pain, etc. This means that when they wake up, they can feel, well pretty much stoned. :) They feel confused and topsy turvy which is why they cry and act weird. Glad it all went well and hopefully he's back to normal soon.

Gorgeous!! Love the old Whippet toddling in at the end. :)

Arthritis (catrophen Injection)
*kirty* replied to GraceMcC's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dog gets cartrophen injections plus glucosamine and sashas blend. Not sure which one helps or if the combo of all three helps but she is certainly much better. -
I have bought Caribu dog rugs before and ws very happy with them. I now buy Weatherbeeta but only because I can get them at cost. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that. At the clinic I work at, we have extensive monitoring equipment and at least one nurse monitors the anaesthetic the entire time. I can't imagine not having that equipment! It is the nurses role to make sure that the patient is stable at our clinic. -
Two of my dogs (Std Poodle and BC x) are protective of the house and yard and I'm sure one of those would bite if pushed, especially if I wasn't home. Two others (Greyhound and Lab x) would greet strangers with open arms, and the last (Italian Greyhound) would hide and bark. One of mine would protect me if I was being attacked, the others would probably do nothing lol.

Surrendering Found Dog To Rescue Rather Than Pound?
*kirty* replied to Pailin's topic in General Dog Discussion
A huge number of people don't use facebook. Get him scanned for a chip, if no chip take him to the pound.
