I'm so sorry pers. He certainly landed where he was meant to be. RIP Dougal and big hugs to you xx

It may have, but chances are the IOP was always going to increase at some point. Have they switched his drops around?
-
I wouldn't be taking the word of a GP vet in this situation - the pup needs to see a specialist to find out exactly what is going on. A mild heart murmur should be asymptomatic. This pup is showing signs of something more sinister.

I'm just so sad. I miss her so much. Her bowl is still sitting on the deck because I just can't put it away. I am trying to keep busy but as soon as I stop, it hits me. Maisie would always comfort me when I cried - she would cuddle into me and lick my face. She was just so special.

I am pretty sure dogs can be upgraded from limited reg to mains reg if the breeder wants. But I think there is a time limit?

Daxilly, off the top of my head normal BGL is around 3.5-6.

Maisie, I miss you so much already. It just can't be real. It has to be a terrible dream. I need you here. I know you won't be lonely at the bridge, you have so many friends there - Kika, Billi, Phoebe, Stevie... I hope there is an endless supply of tennis balls, swimming pools and open fields to run in. No more dodgy knees, no more arthritis, no more pain. But I still can't help but wish you were still here with me. My heart dog, my most special girl.

I didn't get to take her for a last walk, play one more game of fetch or even feed her lots of naughty food. She wouldn't even eat treats last night. It's not fair. Champa is the one with cancer. I have prepared myself to lose him. Maisie has been perfectly well.

I'm devastated to let you know that we lost Maisie last night. I had to rush her to the vet at midnight. She was suddenly in a lot of pain, her gums were pale and she had laboured breathing. I thought maybe she had bloat. They did an xray and found a football sized tumour in her abdomen, probably growing from her spleen. It was pushing all her organs into her chest. Vet thinks it ruptured and thats why she was in so much pain. Surgery wasn't a realistic option. I asked if I could give her strong pain meds and at least bring her home for the night but the vet said she would just get worse and worse. I had to let her go. I just can't believe it. She was the best dog and I love her so much. She seemed perfect and then suddenly she is gone. Maisie was the best dog. Ibswear she understood English. She was my first dog that was just mine. A lady gave her to me when she was just 5-6 weeks old. She destroyed my parents' yard, typical working dog style. She had fear aggression issues which we worked hard to overcome. She was perfect. This just can't be real.

I should clarify that monitoring the BGL at home does not replace regular vet visits. It just means you will have a much clearer picture of what is happening with the levels, and mean you won't need to go to the vet every time you are worried/curious about her levels.

Hi Malty, I have had a diabetic cat and now have a child with diabetes, so I understand your concerns. My first suggestion would be to buy a blood glucose monitor from the chemist so you can check his BG levels at home. This will help you to get him stable and save money on vet visits. Get him on a good quality diet and try to stick to a good routine with injections, etc. See a diabetes specialist if you can. They will be up to date with the most recent treatment regimes, etc. Be prepared for your dog to develop cataracts. Pretty much every dog with diabetes develops cataracts (not cats for some reason). Start saving if you think you would like to do surgery, and look into Ocuglo (a supplement that *may* slow the progression of cataracts. Diabetes sucks but it can be managed very well. We see lots of diabetic dogs at work and many live long happy lives.

Slime Trails, Slobber, Bubbles......

Cool photos but I can't stand drool! Don't know why but it totally grosses me out! Funny because I'm a vet nurse and I'm not fased by blood or pus or poo... But slimey drool makes me gag haha! -
They hit a new low in my eyes today. A colleague's dog died several months ago. She has been chasing Petplan since then for the final payment they owe (he had cancer, treatments, etc). They asked for his full history and death certificate twice, so they were sent it twice. Then yesterday they debited $95 from her account - for a dead dog! Not only that, her premium used to be $55 so it increased $40 and yep you guessed it - no notice of the increase was sent. And they STILL haven't paid her. She is furious!! How can they debit money for a dead dog? I cancelled my policy over a fortnight ago and have received nothing to say they have cancelled it. If they try and take my money again I won't be happy!

Hehe yes I suspect my Lori was kicked out for the same reason. His finder told me he swears but he has been on his best behaviour since I brought him home lol.
-
I would keep him at his lean weight if possible. It will be much better for his hips.
-
How do we know that the boy was in the wrong? He may have known the owners of the house. He may have been there before and thought it was safe. Why would he think it was OK otherwise? As for putting the dogs down - if it were my dogs, I'd drive them to the vet myself. I don't want to own a dog like that. I have no doubt if a stranger entered my yard, especially a child, they would not be attacked.
-
Its a hard call, but I would always choose a great time over a long time. I have two old dogs on long-term NSAIDs which will eventually cause issues with their kidneys. But I would rather see them happy, pain-free and playing and take that risk. No point wrapping them in cotton wool because they would be miserable. Dogs live for the here-and-now. If his HD is only mild, I would get him on every joint supplement I could and then let him live life to the fullest.
-
Call me a cynic but I bet the dog is not in hospital because the owner can't/won't pay for it. $1000 of tests and vet bills is nothing really. And of course you will be charged every time you go. This dogs needs to be on supportive care and referred to aspecialist, but that will cost $$$ too.

Heads Up More Breed Specific Legislation On The Table
*kirty* replied to Steve's topic in General Dog Discussion
If everyone breeds the same way, judges will have to just get used to it. -
Greyhounds rarely get to full speed when playing. I once let Pia have a run with some other dogs and basically she did laps while all the other dogs chased her lol. She would let them all catch up, then she'd switch gears and leave them in her dust. A Greyhound or Whippet at full speed will beat any other breed no question.

Definitely don't see a chiro if the dog has a compressed spinal cord! See a specialist and go from there. Perhaps shoot an email to Pug Rescue Vic - I think they have seen a few cases.
-
Can you keep her inside until you sort something out?
-
I don't think either of her eyes look great - perhaps ask the vet to check for dry eye too.

I used to know a couple who were always bragging about their 40kg ACDs - they were the biggest ACDs you'll ever see, yadda yadda yadda. Sadly their ACDs DID weigh 40kg and they were morbidly obese. The poor things were so fat they could barely move and panted constantly.
