In 1952 - 1954 a considerable quantity of the first generation broods were obtained. After the dogs were raised, they were tested for working qualities and the best dogs were chosen for futher breeding. Beginning with the third generation the work was carried out to improve the breed. In the first group of this generation the best dogs was the sire Khaitar (86U9x), born in 1952 by riesenschnauzer Roy and airedaleterrier Sotta. It was a large male with a strong physique, a strong skeleton, a nice riesenschnauzer type head with dark eyes and healthy strong teeth. It had a well developed torso, a moderately wide and deep chest. The height in the withers was 63 cm, the weight was 32 kg. For exterior and working qualities he got exellent marks. The second group of specimen was obtained from riesenschnauzer Roy and rottweiler Ouna who gave birth to two brothers Azart and Vakh in 1956. They were characterized by a coarce strong build, a massive skeleton, well developed muscles, a broad and deep chest. They had good working qualities and met all the requirements of a universal military dog. Vakh was 70 cm high in the withers. In addition, males Arai (from Roy and Ourma), Chubarik and Ahul (from Roy and Ouda) were used for further breeding. In 1955 the broods of the first and second generations for the time were demonstrated at the Exhibition of Economic Achievement and recieving a high mark. The next stage of breeding work involved raising of crosses as such, perfecting working qualities by a strict choice and selection of the best dogs for subsequent mating. Then it was time for a mass transfer of the puppies to utility dog breeding clubs and other farms for raising and breeding. This breed has been recognized first in Finland then Sweden, Holland, Germany, USA and many other countries. Due to great interest black terrier shown in many countries and owing to absence of any requlations, the dog livestock is continually flowing abroad where the breed recieved the name "Black Russian Terrier" Kinological journal 1/90 A. History In 1924, the Russian Military Council issued an edict that dogs were to be used for military purposes and that all departments of the military must employ dog trainers. As a result of this order the School of Junior Dog Training Specialist was formed. This school had military, sports and laboratory departments. The working dogs that were trained for military purposes were used as guard dogs, mine specialists and aides. Due to the Russians defending their homeland in World War II, many of working dogs in Russia were killed and the state owned kennel, the Central Military School of Working Dogs (CMSWD), also know as the Red Star Kennel, was charged with the responsibility of providing working dogs to the military. The military wanted a large trainable working dog capable of guarding, able to withstand the Siberian subarctic temperatures and a coat that did not require grooming. The dogs were to be used to guard military installations, prisons, prison of war camps and other secret military locations. Available to the CMSWD were Resenschnauzers(Giant Schnauzers),Newfoundlands,Rottweilers, Airedale Terriers, Great Dane,German Shepherd,Eastern European Shepherd, Moscow Water Dogs, and Caucasian Ovcharka. In their laboratory, experimentation took place between the breeds which resulted in failures of what they were trying to achieve. Eventually, a plan was developed by kynologist (person who is professional trained in the behaviour of dogs)and a biologist whereby they would: 1. Obtain hybrids of riesenschnauzer and airedaleterrier. 2. Obtain hybrids of riesenschnauzer and rottweiler. 3. Cross breed the first and second trend hybrids followed by raising the breed itself. By nature the Giant Schnauzer is a large dominant, intelligent, easily trained, versatile, and good-natured dog. The Airedale Terrier is an intelligent, confident, friendly, courageous and fearless dog. The Rottweiler is a large self assured dog. Orginally bred for cattle driving, the rottweiler is now used for guarding. To create the Black Terrier, as it was first called, the following dogs were used: Giant Schnauzers - Sires - Zorab (Reg.7411D), Roy (Reg.U720P), Shaitan Airedale Terriers - Dams - Sotta(Reg.4U78C), Sima (Reg.47U3C), Sembi(4942C), Salma (Reg.48U6C) Rottweiler - Dams - Uda (Reg.59UOY),Una (Reg.58UOY), Femka (Reg.7OU5OP), Urma (Reg.73UOY). Roy, the Giant Schnauzer was bred with different dams to produce dogs with black coats and is considered to be the foundation dog of the Black Terrier. As different breeding occured there many faults including faulty bites, incomplete dentention, undescended testicles, white spots, and other traits that were not in accordance to what they were looking for. As the experimentation continued, descendant dogs that were found not desirable were eliminated from the programme. In 1955, The Red Star Kennel showed their Black Terrier offsprings at the National Agricultural Exhibition. They were well received and obtained the well important Gold Medal and diploma of excellence for the breed. Experimentation continued and it was not until 1957 the Red Star Kennel began to offer second and third generation Black Terrier puppies for sale to private buyers and breeders. It was not until 1958 that a standard was published for the Black Terrier Breed. The standard was published in a book entitled "Manual for Training and Usage of Military Dogs". There were conflict among the private breeders and the Red Star Kennel as to the standard. The private breeders wanted a breed where disposition, temperament and working abilities were fundamental. The Red Star Kennel wanted a breed where the dog's dispostion remained as a guard dog intended to serve in the military and that grooming should not play an important part of the standard as military dogs were kept in kennels and were easliy managable with short hair. In 1970 puppies were shipped to Finland and other parts of Europe. The Black Terrier was becoming a dog to be reckoned with. From 1958 to 1979 breeding and experimentation continued. In 1979, the Red Star Kennel and the Army Navy and Fleet Volunteer Support Organization (DOSAAF) finally approved the standard for the Black Terrier breed. By then were over 800 litters produced amounting to well over 4,000 puppies all which conformed to the standard. Early in the 1980's the Black Terrier was shown in International competitions and a lot of interest was shown in these dogs. In 1981, the Black Terrier was accepted as a breed by the russian authorities. On September 29th 1983 The Black Terrier was accepted by the The Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the World Canine Organization. An FCI Standard was established and revised on February 19th, 1996. In 1992, the Black Terrier was renamed to the Black Russian Terrier (BRT). As the Black Terrier was becoming a known dog, the dogs were being taken to other countries by migrant russians. The dog was introduced into Canada by Rita Golski of Kalinka Kennels. Rita Golski began breeding her "Kalinka" Black Terriers and started to sell her puppies to the United States of America (U.S.A.). As migrant russians began to go to the U.S.A., some of them began to import the Black Terriers from Russia and other parts of Europe. Today, the Black Russian Terrier is a rarity in North America. In March 1996, the American Kennel Club listed the Black Russian Terrier with Foundation Stock Services (FSS). In August of 2001 the Black Russian Terrier was allowed to compete in the Miscellaneous Class. In July 2004, the Black Russian Terrier was fully recognized in the Working Group Classification. Prior to 2002, the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC),the governing body in Canada did not recognize the Black Russian Terrier and breeders had to show their BRTs with other clubs who recognized the breed. Most breeders had to register their BRTs with the AKC which allowed them to participate in shows in the United states. In 2002 the CKC allowed registration and BRT owners were permitted to compete in the Miscellaneous Group. As off this writing the CKC has still not granted full recognization to this breed. With the exportation of the Black Russian Terrier to other parts of the world, the BRT is called and known by different names and is referred to as the Black Terrier, Russian Pearl, Tchiorny Terrier, Chornyi, Svart Terrier, Terrier Noir Russe, Russian Bear Schnauzer, Sort Russisk Terrier, Blackie, Terrier Ruso Negro, Czarny Terier Rosyjski and lastly BRT. [ history ] Breed Standard Breed Standards for the Black Russian Terrier varies throughout the world because of the various governing organizations. It should be noted that if one is interested in exporting or importing a Black Russian Terrier it is very important to know what the rules are concerning tail docking. In some countries there are specific rules against the docking of tails. It is suggested that existing Kennel Club in that country be contacted for tail docking information. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) is the World Canine Organization which as off this writing comprises of 84 member countries. Participating countries, use the FCI Breed Standard as warranted. Under the FCI, the Black Russian Terrier is called Tchiorny Terrier and is classified under Group 2, Section 1. The American Kennel Club (AKC)recognized the Black Terrier as a breed in July 1st, 2004, and was classified in the Working Group. The breed standard can be found here. The American Rare Breed Association recognizes the BRT and uses the FCI standard. The United Kennel Club is a separate entity, recognizes and uses their own breed standard for the BRT. In order to control, track and register dogs, the Government of Canada under the Ministry of Agriculture enacted the Animal Pedigree Act. This legislation led to the formation of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). As off this writing the Black Russian Terrier has not been formally recognized by the CKC, however, the CKC using a breed standard has listed the Black Russian Terrier in the miscellaneous class. Although the CKC is the governing body, another organization the Canine Federation of Canada located in Quebec, Canada uses the FCI breed standard. Prior to the CKC "recognizing" the BRT, owners either had to go to the United States to show their BRTs or show their dogs at the Rare Breed Club of South Western Ontario who recognized the breed using FCI breed standards. In England, the Kennel Club, the Black Russian Terrier Interim Breed Standard was first established on September 1st, 2000. Since 2000, there were many revisions to the breed standard. The Australian National Kennel Club recognizes the Black Russian Terrier under Group 6 (Utility) of their listings. To find out more about the Black Russian Terrier Breed Standard in a particular country it is suggested that you research the topic on the Internet using your favourite search engine. [ history ] Working Abilities The Black Russian Terrier is a highly intelligent and yet a sophisticated dog. He was bred to serve in the military as a guard dog to protect prisons and secret military installations. The BRT always show protecting instincts and will guard and protect his family to the end. In some countries the BRT is used as police dogs The BRT's intelligence makes him an excellent student at Obedience Trials and Carting [ history ] Grooming Preparing Black Russian Terrier for an Exhibition from Olga Vorobjeva Magazin “Black Terrier” issius No. 8/98 Many amateur breeders know that it is very important to present a dog on a show in a proper way. It is what your pet´s career depends on sometimes. I´d love to share my experience of 10 years of preparing dogs for shows with your, dear admires of Black Russian Terrier. It was long ago when people thought the Black Terrier (BT) doesn´t require any particular care. That is, washing him one time per year in a nearby pool, using ordinary soap is enough. And you may go to an exhibition having produced him from his kennel, on a huge chain. Today nobody is shocked by the way the girl-participants are prepared for various shows – “Miss Russia, Universe and so on. The dog show should be treated like this, too. All participants must be thoroughly prepared for the show: they must be taught to move, exhibit themselves correctly. Their owners schould know how to trimming, to cut the hair. It´s like art – to prepare a proper blackie. Do you remember the 60s and the people who dressed nicel in oder to look “smart?” They were “smart” because they were not like others. The BT is “smart” in his way. He´s elegant, sporty, self-assured, like nobody else – he´s smart. Well, now let´s talk preparations. How can one produce a stylish animal out of a bear-like “something” ? Let´s start from the very beginning – trimming. Trimming means thorough combing out and extracting expired hair, which easily and painlessly falls out. You don´t have to torture your dog with pulling out hairs which do not want to pinch off – it´s no good. And if you insist you´ll receive bruises on the body of a dog, mistrustfulness for your hands and the increase of gray hair that will appear in some time. It should be mentioned, that while the BT was changing his appearance and while he retrained a rich decorative hair, the hair lost its Wire-like structure which it used to be (with the dogs of old standards). When the puppy is one year old, it´s time for him to get accustomed to a new procedure – combing out his hair. The comb with rear teeth is just what you need. Don´t forget that the dog doesn´t have any personal ambitions and he doesn´t care if he is smart or not. But he thinks it´s his life, his job – to stand haircuts, combs and exhibitions – because he was born a terrier. You are to try not to deliver any pain to a dog. If so, in 2-3 months a dog will take his procedure with pleasure – it´s some kind of a massage to him. Just find 5-10 minutes a day to take a comb and extract some inevitable spikes. BT´s hair requires a lot of care, it´s some kind of art that can be taught. Usually, we must take into consideration the speed of hair growth, but the average date is 7-10 days before the exhibition. Before you make his haircut, the BT should be combed and washed afterwards. Washing Special shampoo for dogs (it´s better to use the one for show-dogs) is diluted and beaten up until the foam appears. The coat is impregnated with this foam and then thoroughly washed away. Then it´s useful to apply the rinsing balsam, which is helpful in a way of restoring normal skin functions. You can even rinse the coat with lime juice of beer – the hair becomes stronger. Then, wring out the coat, and wipe it dry with a towel. You can use a fan, but you must remember that drawing off the hair will result in getting the untypical poodle-like coat. When the coat is dry, it is combed and now you may use your scissors. Haircut (Head) Comb the hair both on the skull and muzzel in the direction of growing, extracting dead hair. Cut the hair on ears – both inside and outside. Though, it´s better to cut the inner side of the ears in the last turn, after all dog has been already cut, because small spiky hairs in his ear make him shake his head which is rather annoying. Ears should be cut with the electric or mechanical shaving machine, but you can use scissors. The direction is from the tip of the ear to the bulk of it.If the hair hangs on both sides of the ear making the effect of “large ears”, cut it away. Be careful and do not hurt the dog! Forehead. Start from eyebrows and with the help of a shaver make a “platform” Its width is equal to the width of the skull, and the length is from eyebrows to the ear. The rest of the forehead is cut with scissors so that short hair smoothly turns into long, from one to two cm. Its makes available the formation of a “cap” which is designed on the back of the head and makes the effect of prolonged head. After you have finished the forehead, it´s time you cut the cheek-bones. Draw off the ear and shave the hair at the base of the ear. Then, thoroughly cut the cheek-bones, leaving about 1,75 cm. The cheek-bones must be absolutely flat. If the dog has a wide skull – cut the cheek-bones even shorter. If the skull is long and narrow – leave more hair. That will remedy the situation. After you decided what length of the hair you´ll leave on cheek-bones, it´s time for the next step. Now the head must be given the shape of a “brick”. It is done by leveling the change between long hair on the muzzle and beard and short hair on the cheekbones. The head should have rectangular shape if you look from above and triangular shape from the side view. The fringe must be like continuation of the forehead, emphasizing its straight lines and parallel to the muzzle. Improper fringe distorts the parallelism of forehead and muzzle. All hair distorting rectangular shape of the head are to cut away. Them comb the head again and check your work up. Haircut (Neck and chest) Draw a line from the base of the ear to the junction of the jaw and the neck. Cut short from the base of the ear to the neck and try to form a “shirtfront”. Now it´s time to get down to the neck. Comb the hair in direction, opposite to the direction of growth. Cut the excessive hair with scissors, form a mane. Try to level the section of withers, otherwise you´ll get a shaved neck coming out of hairy body. On the left and right sides of the neck long hair (2-3 cm) turns into very short. The mane must look like a continuation of the neck. The length of the mane depends on the peculiarities of the build of the concrete dog. If the neck is thin and long – the hair is longer and if the neck is short and massive – leave shorter hair. There are such word in the standard of the breed: “… The front part of the chest overhangs the elbowline…” I think it´s good to emphasize this feature. Draw a line from the chest bone, by the shoulderblade. Here is the border between short hair on the lower part of the neck and long hair on the shoulders. Don´t make this border sharp. All lines of the haircut are smooth, they turn one into other without any decorativeness and fancifulness, which is more suitable to decorative breeds. All parts of body should be in the same scale. Just remember, that moderateness is peculiar to this breed. Leave 1-2 cm starting from the chest bone. Form the front of the chest with scissors. Properly cut front makes the effect of “rushing forward”. If the chest is well-developed, you don´t have to leave long “skirt”. The sharp line of the chest (which must not be more than 10 cm lower than the elbow line) turning into stomach is good. Besides, if the chest is already well developed, the excessive mass of hair will create the effect of squat build. If you try to hide an undeveloped chest under the long skirt, you´ll attract the attention of an expert to the very feature. The length of the hair on the shoulder is about 3-5cm. Once again, you must consider the build of your dog, especially the width of the chest. If the chest is not very wide, do not try to make it wider by leaving more hair. You´d better physically develop your pet. The back is also cut with scissors to get a strict line from withers to the tail. Length of hair on the back is about 3-5 cm, the same about sides and chest. Keep in mind that you can both spoil your dog with a haircut and emphasize its positive features. The BT has salient ribs, so do not make the body flat, but also don´t leave much hair – that will make the dog “heavy”. The tail cut evenly, 2-3 cm are left. The inner (back) side of the tail and the geitals are cut as short as possible. If the tail is short, you may leave longer hair on its tip- that´ll make it longer. Haircut (Forequarters) The forequarters should be thoroughly combed against the direction of the hair growth. Cut away the excessive hair, form a “Column”. Thick bundles of hair in between fingers are cut away. The paw must look round. Haircut (Hindquaters) Start cutting from the elbow, (1-2 cm above it). You may use the shaver. Cut the back side of the thighs, up to the anus. On the thigh the length is 3-5 cm , and the longer hair is smoothly replaced by shorter. If you properly cut the thigh, you can hide many faults and weakness of the build. Id`like to mention once more that after the haircut, the BT must have nice, natural lines of the silhouette. His appearance must be self-assured and powerful and by no means decorative. [ history ] Puppy Chart The Black Russian Terrier Puppy Chart shown below gives information regarding growth stages of a puppy from ages 2 to 10 months old. If a puppy is not in the ranges shown, it is suggested that the breeder or a veterinarian be contacted.

You know I am a bit confused. You say you dont agree with bsl but you always seem to post something supporting it.Are you trying to convince others or convince yourself that its needed? Without wading through all that I can tell you quite easily why the American Pitbull Terrier features highly in bite statistics. For one it is the most owned dog in the US.Numbers of registered American Pitbull Terriers is approximately 4.5 million and conservative estimates put the total number of 'pitbulls' at about twice that,so suffice to say they are the most popular breed in their country of origin. Those statistics are quite old and irrelevant to Australia but their are very good reasons the stats climb over time and popularity is but one. The question you should be asking is how the countries mascot,a nations pride go from much loved hero to the most demonised, hated child killing machine on the planet.Do some research and it might go some way to helping you understand the myth, the legend that is the pitbull. So we have established that the APBT is the most popular dog in the US.That in itself is reason enough why it would be up there in any bite stats just by sheer weight of numbers but that is not the only reason. To understand the full story you have to dig a little deeper. If you go back in time to the time when dog fighting was outlawed in the US in 1976 and in the state of Louisiana in 1982.Around the same time the dogs started turning up here but I will come back to that. Previous to this time the popularity of the dog wasnt as great. When dog fighting was outlawed many people got out of the dogs and there were plenty of dogs to be bought and people to cash in on the reputation and thats when the popularity sky rocketed. You have to look at the reasons some people own a dog.Protection from a real or perceived threat.People in low socio economic areas obtaining the easiest dog to obtain.Backyard Breeding of dogs that should never have been bred from. The US gang culture and the pitbull as a status symbol go hand in hand you only have to watch mtv videos to see that. I can guarantee you that the majority of those fatalities if investigated would have involved dogs of over 80 pounds. The real American Pitbull Terrier was never bred to be a dog this large,so how did it get that big?Easy answer people selecting larger dogs and also crossing other breeds into them then back crossing them to pits to produce larger 'pitbulls'.These dogs are more marketable to gangsters and wannabe's and in a couple of decades they have bred a super pit that is no longer an American Pitbull Terrier and shouldnt be considered one.I can guarantee if you surveyed the average person in the street in the US and showed them pictures of various styles or pitbulls they would identify the 100+ pound monsters as the real pitbull becuase that is the publics perception. Not to mention the all encompassing term 'pitbull' which covers all dogs of a certain type. These dogs are no longer American Pitbull Terriers, they are not representative of the breed. The word Terrier means small dog not monster dog. They have taken the terrier out of the pitbull. The public should demand the government take action over dog attacks full stop and not just when one happens but now to protect the community against owners that will not do the right thing. That is the real issue.Bull breeds arent the only dogs that cause injury.I guess you would call any breeder of APBT an underground breeder and that is only your perception that they would be doing them no good. When there are none here do you think the government will suddenly take notice and say ok we will start again? They need to understand they will never get rid of them and if this is the case and it is they need to find a workable solution to catch those that fall through the cracks in the system. I am sorry but I disagree. If you go back to where I said dog fighting was outlawed and around the same time the dogs started turning up here, you can thank your lucky stars for that becuase if these 100 pound monsters were imported here there would be fatalities.Dont worry about statistics there worry about here. Why is it in all those years no purebred American Pitbull Terrier has been responsible for a single fatality in this country? If they were such a threat to society as the media and government would have us believe why no fatalities. That in itself is a testament to the breed and reinforces the history of the breed in the fact that Human aggressive dogs were culled. Who is glorifying dog fighting? There is a difference between acknoledging something and glorifying it.Failure to accept one's history or denial that it happend is to deny his very existance. You will say anyone who breeds and APBT is an underground breeder. What did you think they were going to do just give up there dogs becuase some no nothing in his ivory tower said they should.Giving up something for no good reason and without a fight in my view is just UNAUSTRALIAN. If a dog is registered as something he is not and he never gets into any trouble never has.the council have never had any reason to come around becuase of his behaviour and he is a much loved pet that would do no harm.Who gets hurt? A: No one. I am the one who first made the statement about falsifying papers and it was more said tongue in cheek to piss of Dougie but I wanted him to know just how easily it could be done and If I wanted to I could do it but I have no real need but I will do what I have to to keep my dogs safe. The real dog fighters live outside of the law and this law never affected them and it wasnt going to it is the rest of us that have to look over our shoulders. They dont care because they never did and nothing changed for them. Thats because thats all some people have got I know you have this thing for the Fila since you discovered his name.Maybe do a bit of research on other dogs. What about the Boerboel. They are already here.Read the real history about them and what they have been used for have a look at dog bited stats in SA and some of the horrific injuries.Have a look how there history aligns with the bullmastiff.I am not trying to malign this breed as I think they are a great dog. Give me 10 years and plenty of money and I will breed you a dog far worse than any Fila and do it with dogs that are already here.I can guarantee you with 100% cetainty that it can be done as it is not that hard if it is your intention and you know what you are doing. That is why the government needs to put the onus on the owner not the breed of dog.

That is a gem right there havent heard one that silly for a long time.I am sorry but that statement shows your ignorance.I think you have read one to many media articles. The staffy was not bred from the pitbull it is the other way round and bullmastiff and rottie have not been added to either in there purebred form for purpose of improvement. What you are talking about is a bandog and the cross you describe has been done a million times in the uk and other places to breed a large aggressive dog. They are crackhouse dogs nothing more nothing less. I am sorry for what has happened to your horse the owners of the dog should be held responsible but at the end of the day it is a containment issue not a breed issue there are plenty of dogs out there capable of inflicting the same damage on livestock and do every other week.It is up to people to control/contain there dogs if they did so there would be far less drama.Stick around and you may just learn something becuase god knows you sure have a lot to learn.

Supreme Court Rules On Restricted Dog Breeds
bulldogz4eva replied to myValkyrie's topic in In The News
Firstly I would say there is nothing honorable about justice Martin at all.Obviously a man that cant think for himself.Seems to me the decision was already made befor he walked in the court room. This case has received too much unwanted media attention for the QLD Government and they want to put a stop to it.I think his decision has far reaching implications for dog owners in Queensland if this decision is upheld. Dogs were banned from importation in 1992 not 1956. American Staffodshire Terriers have been bred for long enough to a different standard and criteria than American pitbull Terriers that they are not the same dog.Sure they share the same DNA,look similar, carry some of the same traits etc, but they are not the same dog in general. There are many lines that are similer and many lines that have been crossed back and forth which only serves to blur the line between the 2.The problem arises becuase of those that cant distinguish between the 2 dogs.Because of this they will look to ban the amstaff as well.I have said for a long time they will either ban them or lift the restrictions becuase it cant work otherwise.Problem is what happens now.Verbal guarantees from politicians are about as useful as the pope's ball bag. -
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel." The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon. The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements. Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled. "I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse. "I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life." The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend. "You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel." After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene. The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel." Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament. "It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners. For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most. "I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

Whilst I feel very sorry for the boy and his family as this is a very traumatic event.Trying to stab a dog to death while it is fighting with another dog or attacking it is not a very smart thing to do.Whilst many might be praising him I think there are other things he could have done like call for help, go to a neghbours house and raise the alarm. What was he doing for 90 minutes? He said he was scared about his siblings. If they were inside the house then there was no threat to them.I realise he is only 13 and probably panicked but he is very very lucky he did not sustain any serious injuries. If I was a dog and someone plunged a knife into me I know what I would do to them. At the end of the day only those who were there no what happened.Fortuantely no people were injured not so fortunate for the dog.Once again people not containing there dog which is there responsibility regardless of breed.

My sentiments exactly .Its an unfortunate set of circumstances but children should always come first. I am sure a home can be found for him without children where he will be taken care of.I have been confronted with the same situation unfortunately dog was not rehomeable and pains me greatly to have to pts the dog but children always come first. You can buy another dog but you cant buy another child. Disposable statements are easy to make from your armchair but children deserve a second chance and a loving home more so than a lot of dogs do. Our prisons are full of people that didnt have the opportunity of a loving home or foster care and left to fend for themselves. If people like Brooke didnt foster children there would be a lot more.Just think about that.

RACKETEERING LAWSUIT FINGERS HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES Multi-Million Dollar Animal Rights Group Accused of Corruption; Lawsuit Available at www.HumaneWatch.org Washington – In a landmark RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) lawsuit certain to have far-reaching implications for the animal rights movement, Feld Entertainment and the Ringling Brothers circus sued the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), its lawyers, and several other animal rights groups last week. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) unearthed the lawsuit in federal court records today. CCF is making the lawsuit available online at its newest website, www.HumaneWatch.org. “America’s farmers, ranchers, hunters, fishermen, research scientists, fashion designers, and restaurateurs have seen for decades how the animal rights movement can behave like a mobbed-up racket,” said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. “But it’s still shocking to see the evidence laid out on paper. In a treble-damage lawsuit like this, a jury could actually do the humane thing and finally put HSUS out of business completely.” In its February 16 lawsuit, Feld leveled bribery, fraud, obstruction of justice, and money laundering charges against HSUS and two of its corporate attorneys; three other animal rights groups; the Washington, DC law firm of Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal; and all three of that firm’s named partners. On December 30, 2009, Federal Judge Emmitt Sullivan ruled that these defendants collaborated to pay more than $190,000 to Mr. Tom Rider, a former Feld employee who was an elephant “barn helper” for two years in the late 1990s, in exchange for his impeached testimony against Feld in an earlier lawsuit—testimony Judge Sullivan declared “not credible” and disregarded in its entirety. That lawsuit was dismissed. Feld is also suing Mr. Rider, and a nonprofit “Wildlife Advocacy Project” charity, claiming that Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal used it to funnel money from their plaintiff clients to Mr. Rider. These clients included the Fund for Animals, which merged with HSUS in 2004. “The new HumaneWatch website is the only place the public will be able to read this lawsuit,” Martosko added. “We’re publishing a treasure trove of information about the Humane Society of the United States, including lots of surprising documents that HSUS would rather remain hidden from its contributors.”

Very sad indeed.A young child scarred for life. Why is it they use malinois anyway. There are plenty of dogs that can scent as well or better. Was the dog a dual purpose dog?Was it also trained in protection. The way things are in the US i suspect there are more and more dual purpose dogs used. If it was my child they would have had to pry me off the dog as I choked the life out of it with its own collar. I recently returned from overseas.I was in an airport in South East Asia when I went to the toilet there was a guard with a very large dog drinking from the basin in the toilet.I asked if the dog was a malinois or a dutch shepherd. He said it was a malinois and it was huge and not all to freindly. He said it was a drug detection dog.

What Breeds Actually Fall Under Bsl?

Why is it that you think that Presa's should be allowed and Dogo's or Tosa's shouldnt?A well bred Presa is probably a lot more dog than a dogo.I dont think that any of them should be allowed to be owned by just anyone, pitbulls included but I also dont think you can single any one breed out as that is still BSL.There are dogs that havent made it to these shores yet that pose more risk than the breeds mentioned but give it time and they will as they arent banned,Under the right ownership they wont pose a threat.I agree in restrictions not outright bans.If they licenced certain breeds and visited the premises before issuing a licence and deemd the people worthy of owning one all good and well if they can prove that they are capable of containing, training exercising and not causing a general nuisance. Its nice to dream of a perfect world.I also agree that It probably wouldnt work becuase its not the licenced people its the ones they sell too and because some people worship money more than anything and will put that above all else and dogs will get into the wrong hands.Greed drives some people. Its the nature of the beast. -

Why is it every time BSL gets mentioned you jump on the Fila band wagon. Its Fila not Filo,Filo is a type of pastry. They werent bred to maim and kill as slaves were a commodity. They were bred to run them down and catch them.Fila in old Portuguese means to 'seize',just the same as the bull mastiff was bred to run down and hold poachers not to kill them. They have been used to protect children from kidnapping and I know people that run an orphanage in Thailand that keep a couple of them and also knew a guy that sold dogs to a fella that ran an orphanage on the Texas/Mexican border.Bottom line is when raised with children they love them and will protect them with their life. Its not acceptable for the dog to bite the judge its acceptable when agitated for the dog to want to bite the judge and not show fear as this is his true nature to confront a threat. Like I have said before you dont have to worry as their is none here and there is never going to be. -
Im not going to change it as that is the heading as it was reported in the paper.I just wanted to see if anyone else picked it up.As usual the RSPCA had to get on the band wagon.

Exactly. He got fined for not being registered here and performing surgeries, not for tail docking. The vet that still docks tails here and crops ears is on the vet surgeons board and he doesnt get charged. Why is that? You dont believe it still happens? It does and it is not totally illegal in this state. One vet I have mentioned will still do it and he will not get fined.Onoy last price he quoted for it was quite high. There are still quite a few dogs riunning round here with docked tails and what are the RSPCA going to do about it.Nothing, because they cant prove anything.

Couldnt find this online but was in todays West Australian. A veterinarian from NSW was fined $32,500 in Perth Magistrates Court this week after pleading guilty to performing tail docking surgeries without being registered in WA. the Veterinary Surgeons Board charged Ross John Hansford with 132 counts. Board inspector Chris Loyd said Hansford, who is a registered veterinary surgeon in NSW, travelled to WA to perform tail docking surgeries from November 2008 to March 2009. RSPCA WA President Lyn Bradshaw said the fine would send a warning to the community that cosmetic tail docking of dogs was unacceoptable. Sorry Lynn but the only message it sends is dont get caught.

I hate to say it but I said it would come. The Northern Territory and the ACT are next. They want to eradicate these dogs from Australia without any justification.Dont be surprised if there is a highly publicised dog attack in the Northern Territory very soon.Call me cynical but its just how the government plays there hand and the sheep shuffle along behind.

That price is about right but its way too high and yes there is a reason becuase as long as people want one as a status symbol and are prepared to pay ridiculously high prices they will stay high. You couldnt give me one for free.Problems mating naturally, problems whelping, breathing problems, heart problems the list goes on.The on,y thing that will save the bb is outcross blood. The fuss isnt the price its what you are getting for the price and I always say a dog is only wirth what you are willing to pay and if you are happy with the price then its all good.I have paid that and more for dogs and I am happy with what I got but I am not a newbie to dogs who got sold some line from a breeder and I would happily pay the price again and I am going to in the near future for a puppy.I would not pay that for a bb the fuss is the dog with so many problems you are getting for that money.Like souff said start saving now not just for the purchase but for the ongoing vet bill that you will have for the 5 years it is alive.

I think you are taking it way out of context and looking through your ANKC glasses.Like Paul said handled correctly they arent as big a problem but they dont like strangers.I dont have a problem with that and I would have one over a Rottie any day of the week, but hey thats just me. Here here.Almost zero chance of them truning on their owner its just not in their nature. The Brazilians didnt coin the phrase "Faithful as a Fila" for nothing.
-
I think you are misinterpreting what I was saying. What I meant is you cant go word for word by every breed standard that was written and think every dog within the breed is going to be exactly that.A Fila TT isnt undertaken by every dog and as I said I am not aware that the ARBA actually do it at their shows.Cafib do.Not every dog is going to pass it as not everyone has it in them. The other Rare breed people use the Fila TT as a test for their dogs.I wasnt hinting that Rotties should do it at all.Rotties dont need any help in getting banned.Right across the US whenever they mention banning breeds the pitbull gets mentioned and the Rottie is not far behind,Depends what you mean by aversion to strangers. There are circumstances where it is warranted, lets say on your own property in the middle of the night when people come around that shouldnt be there. I have been to Brazil too.
-
You hit the nail on the head my friend and I dont like to drop names so i didnt name that breed but thats what I was thinking. They are much bigger than Fila's on the whole and that definitely dont like strangers either.
-
Have a go at the size of their list .Someone must of discovered google on that day.I cant speal Broholma but I can bread one with egg and bred crumbs. I do like their style though and wish I had thought of that.Applications to import judged on a case by case basis. What a novel idea. They are dealing with a smaller population but how hard can it be to view the premises and ensure containment, background checks on the person, verification of dog/breed ownership and good character. How hard can it be that the 3rd world can do it.
-
The judge is not supposed to lay his hands on the dog as that would be foolish depending on the individual. My understanding is that standard is taken from the Cafib standard.I dont think they do TT at American Rare Breed Association Shows as art pf the judging.Fila TT is usually done separately and is open to other breeds in the states.Cafib in Brazil do it as part of the judging and the judge knows and expects it so there are no surprises.I think you are reading a bit to much into it.Read the breed standard for the Rottweiler or orther large breeds and if they all lived up to the standard you would never need any other dog but they dont. There is variation in every breed as far as temperament goes and not every Fila is going to be a man eater and like every dog you get out what you put in.If you encourage it thats what you wil get if you dont you will have a more controllable animal.Simple dog training 101.They are dogs not lions. Anyway nopoint debating it as we arent going to own one any time soon.lol.

Looks like another one is ready to fold.Very interesting.Very interesting indeed.Holland and Italy and now more are following. The 3rd world can consider it but we cant.Amazing isnt it but then again who ever said we were a forward thinking country. THE BSL IN BERMUDAS SOON WILL BE HISTORY. Residents may soon be able to import 'banned' dogs such as pitbulls, bull terriers, rottweilers and mastiffs - as long as they can prove themselves to be "responsible dog owners". Government is to set up a Dog Authority to "consider applications for persons who wish to import or breed dogs that are currently restricted". The 2003 'banned' list featured dozens of 'dangerous' dogs. Government, however, now appears ready to scratch the ban, with a review of the restrictions on importation and breeding. Yesterday, an Environment Ministry spokesman disclosed that Minister El James has now requested the establishment of a 'Dog Authority'. The Government spokesman said: "The Ministry is moving forward with the establishment of a Dog Authority as requested by the Minister. This Authority would consider applications for persons who wish to import or breed dogs that are currently restricted. "The point of having an Authority is to be able to give consideration to good, responsible dog owners who have historically not been problematic, but who have been caught by the current restrictions that resulted from the misdeeds of unsocialised dogs and irresponsible owners." Dr. Neil Burnie of Endsmeet Animal Hospital has long been an advocate that many dogs on the banned list can make loving family pets. He said: "I am delighted to see that Government is actually placing the onus on responsible dog ownership rather than a blanket breed ban. It has always been my view and that of other knowledgeable individuals within the veterinary business and legislation that the onus should be placed on the owner and not on the authorities, so the owner should be responsible for the care and condition of the dog." The 2003 'banned' list includes: Akita, American Bulldog, American Pitbull terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Argentine mastiff (Dogo Argentino), Aryan Molossus, Australian Dingo, Boerboel, Brazilian mastiff (Fila Brasileiro), Bull Terrier & Miniature Bull Terrier, Bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Danish Broholmer, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa (Tosa Inu), Mastiff, Neopolitan Mastiff, Perro de Presa Canario, Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Rottweiler, Tibetan Mastiff, and Wolf & Wolf Hybrid. Crossbreeds are also included.
