  1. Thanks Dogmad! We did go in there pretty resolute to begin with, especially as our breeder warned us that another owner from the same litter had been bullied/talked into C4 and heartworm by a vet. Ahh well, fingers crossed we get lucky with the Berowra Vet and can settle in a build a relationship with them and our pup.
  2. Thanks for all the recommendations everyone. We ended up going with Andrew Morgan as our new neighbour also had great things to say about him. He was great with Kali in keeping her calm and spending time getting to know her, but was unfortunately pushy with vaccines. Our breeders' health guarantee specifies C3 only(separate kennel cough ok as long as its a few weeks after the C3). due to weim's tendency to auto-immune conditions, and having had weims previously where they have reacted badly to vaccination I am whole heartedly in agreement. The conversation seemed to be based all around what was cheapest, especially when we advised we were waiting until she had a season to get desexed, which started another round of pushy-ness. Anyway I can see why people like him, he is very personable and has a great manner with dogs, but I found him a little dismissive of breed-specific issues which rubbed me the wrong way having had previous experience with said issues. We've since spoken to Berowra Vet Clinic(joined with Asquith) and they seem much more experienced with weims(the receptionist at Andrew's had no idea what a wei was!) and their quirks and we'll be trying them next time.
  3. Hahaha, good point! she was an affectionate little thing :)
  4. Well we met and played with the pups on Sunday which was fantastic, nice to just sit down and chat with the breeders and other families whilst the puppies ran amok and played with everyone. Found out today which of the girls we are getting, and it turns out it was the one we spent the most time with, she's a cutie and is a real sniffer, I think we'll give tracking a try at some stage and see how she takes to it. Anyway, a very exciting morning, and great to know which pup we are getting, I've spent this evening scrolling back through all the newborn photos and watching her grow in reverse :) Only a few weeks!
  5. It was tough! :) And I am up earlier than you really should be on a sunday! :) (Unless opening the back door for a puppy) The pups are a little over 6 weeks old, they're ready to go on new years eve, but our breeder is helping us out by looking after her for another week so I can get the fences sorted out at our new place. It'll be very exciting, my first puppy in a long time, but my wife's first ever :)
  6. After 2 long years of talking-to(annoying) our breeder we've finally locked in a wei puppy! (had to find a house first!) Going to go meet the pups tomorrow!
  7. Thanks everyone for the recommendations, I looked up Angus Martin, looks like a great option!
  8. Hi all, After a very long wait/search we have finally found bought a house, and will be welcoming a new Wei puppy home in early January! Our new place is in Berowra Heights, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good vet in the local area as we are new to the area? None of our friends who live nearby are pet people. Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated! Thanks Nick
  9. I've had a similar debate with a few different friends recently. We're planning to get a pup later this year, my first dog since leaving home and my wife's first ever pet. When friends ask why we are so set on a pure bred dog when we could "just get a cross from the paper" I just have to shake my head. We've been to a number of shows in the last 2 years, seeing dogs, and meeting breeders, and I really don't think you can put a price on the value of the time we have spent with very helpful and knowledgeable breeders. Especially for my wife having never had pets, talking with a knowledgable and responsible breeder has been invaluable. We've chosen our breeder and as soon as the small obstacle of a house purchase is out of the way we'll be giving her another call and probably soaking up more of her time! I don't think there are any BYB's who would a) be at shows and b) take as much time to talk to someone who is not in a "buy now" situation. I for one have no objection to the price our breeder has quoted, considering that a Wei(or any other dog) should be living with us for easily the same amount of time we'd have a car if not 2 cars! If the only concern you have in getting a dog is the price your priorities are a bit backwards imo.
  10. Always been a large dog person, grew up with GSD's and Weims, and are planning to get a Weim next year, but one little dog I do love are daschunds! A guy at my gym owns two and he ties them up outside in the morning where they can watch him workout, it's the cutest thing when they know he is about to finish up they get super excited :)
  11. We went to the Sydney Royal on the day the Wei's were showing with the specific intention of meeting breeders and their dogs. However we had contacted the breeders we wanted to chat to before hand and they all asked us to see them after the judging was over. While we were wandering about checking the judging out an owner of a Longhair Wei actually brought his dog over to the edge of the exercise area and encouraged us to cuddle and play with his dog, which was fantastic, still didn't convince my wife on longhairs though Anyway, we spoke to the breeders and being able to see so many of their dogs in a single place and seeing other owners of their dogs really helped us to make a decision on who we'll be going with. We weren't taking it upon ourselves to play with everyones dogs though. I think there is something about the show environment, particularly the volumes of people you see at the Easter show, that makes people forget basic courtesy and see the interaction as a right rather than a privilege or benefit. I also think the show organisers should be a bit more concerned about the dogs welfare in regards to the environment, we went to the Sydney Royal twice and it really needed some sort of crowd control, the hall was too crowded and the heat from so many people must have been awful for the dogs, not to mention the sea of hands being thrust through the fence!
