  1. Here are some pics of my Afghans Imogen Lucius
  2. can we have some pics I've seen a lot of Liver and Whites does anyone here have Black and White? Do colour variances have different peronalities? Although its GSP's here is the temperment different to german Wire hair pointers? What is the price range of a GSP. Are they an easy breed to train or do they get distracted easily while training?
  3. Granulomatous sebaceous adenitis: a disease of sebaceous (sweat) skin glands characterized by reactive tissue growth and autoimmune destruction of the sebaceous glands. Hair loss occurs and is poorly responsive to treatment. Common in standard poodles, Akitas, Samoyeds and vizslas Skin for Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) How: Two small skin biopsies done in the midline near the shoulders When: After the second birthday and annually thereafter Where: Your veterinarian can take the biopsies; these are then sent to a certified veterinary dermatopathologist. Hope thats helpful, top part was from a post on DOL in 2004 and the lower part from poodles in Australia, i do have more information about SA and other hereditary disease, but alas tyhey are in Sth Aust in storage. Most genetic issue and hereditary problems can be googled or search on the internet. As far as I know I don't know anyone with Standards that have SA, but that doesn't mean that it's not out there
  4. Not that common as far as Im aware, not many breeders test for it unless its in their lines.

    Lowchen

how do you register a Smoochen, do you add anything on the paperwork when regsitering or are they just registered as per normal Lowchen? From you eperience what would be the ideal price range for a pet/show lowchen?
  7. From what I've heard $800-2000

    Lowchen

yeah i had that problem too, non shedding on my clothes So then any litter bred today could have the chance of Smoochens?

    Lowchen

So would it be Hereditary, meaning that it would have to be in the lines for it to happen?
  10. I agree Redarachnid, having lived with them for over 3yrs now I know all to well thier inteligence and I would place it over the poodles You'll find the same person that said fish are easy to keep, is the same person that said Afghans are dumb "We have a rule in our yard if there's a hole in the fence by time you have found it, the dogs are down the road" Redarachnid, what Afghans do you show and own?
  11. I have to differ slightly from Darkrai, as regards the vocalising, but I guess all dogs are diffrent - I've had Standard Poodles for over 30 years and have found that, in the main, they only bark when there's something to bark at! Mine are excellent "doorbells" ;) ;) Wanna swap then I must admit though they can be peaceful, but make excellent guard dogs :D
  12. Our 2 are quite vocal, they bark at their own shadows If hey are in coat and maintained they can do well but just like all mammals, they too can be affected by heat. Proper shading should be provided. Our girl does quite well in summer she's shaved off which keeps her a bit cooler.
  13. 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) Breeder, Owners and Exhibitor 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? France, Russia, German take ypur pick each say they created the breed. The Standard poodle was develpoed as a Water Retirever. Its trims where designed to protect its internal organs from the cold water, these trims where not as elaborate or as extensive in coat as what we see in the ring today. Also used as guard dogs and for a short period where used by the French Police as Policing Dogs, they became more popular with Circus' as performing pooches doing tricks and amusing the audiences. To the more common Fashion Dogs they became today in Dog Rings. This breed excels at Obed, Aglity and waits doting on its master. 3. How common is it in Australia? Standards are a common breed but not as popular as the other 2 sizes. 4. What is the average lifespan? Teens 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Happy joyful, proud, intelligent 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? 30-60mins walk and some mental tasks to keep them from getting bored. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? yes and no. Some Standards can be over the top and very Boisterous, but others can be quiet and calm. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Yes if left with someting to occupy themselves with. 9. How much grooming is required? Show sog can take about 10hrs of preparation from Wash - drying - trimming - then more prep at shows. pet dogs are normally cut back with a #7blade and kept short, this is normally the easiest way of keeping a pet poodle. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Depends on the dog 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Hip Dysplasia, Von Wilibrands (vWB), Hyperactiveness 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Check that the pups/dogs have been tested for all relveant health testing and their results. Ask if the parents are VWB clear or affected and if the pup have been tested Do they come with grooming instructions Which puppy is best suited for me
  14. 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) I am the owner with my fiance of 3 Afghans, I have owned afghans for nearly 3years and what fun they have been 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? This is one of the Ancient breeds dating back before Christ - well so most of the dog books say as well as painting/carving etc that depict this breed. They where bred as guard dogs, protecting the tribes. One of the is legends are that they where bred to hunt Snow Leopards, gazell, deer, and hares. 3. How common is it in Australia? Not as common as they where in the 60's & 70's, now days they are a rare breed but still common for those that know about them. 4. What is the average lifespan? Teenagers 10-15 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Aloof with strangers, but generally a happy joyful dog with their owners, BUT are completely subburn Each of our dogs have different temperments: Lucius has a strong proud temperment, but also is a tail wagging happy hound. Imgoen is aloof, but is a total nutter and a clown Xanthe is laid back slighty Aloof, but blonde at the sametime. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? 1.5hrs, they should be given the chance to run, but will happily be a lounge lizard in front of the TV on your favourite seat. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? No.. They are strong, stuborn, time consuming breed, and thats not mentioning their coat lol 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Yes, but they are more suited to a pair or compainon 9. How much grooming is required? Depends on the dog, Lucuis only takes just over an hour and so does Imy now, but Xanthe has a mammoth amount of coat, before she was clipped of late last year she took me almost 6hours from washing to dry, now she takes me about 3hrs 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Yes. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Hip dysplasia, Cancer & Tumors are just some 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Have they puppies parents been health tested. If you can see the parents or atleast one of them.

    Lowchen

Depends on the dog, the one i had I nearly had to run with her she was a baby when i was showing her, even the Judge told me to move faster ;) For a better indication take a stroll over to the toy ring if there are any lowchens on and see how quick they can move. I've gotta wait a couple more months before I can get another Im a fan of the browns (Chocolates lol), oh and Sables

    Lowchen

No home is complete without a Little Lion in their den 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) I have only owned a Lowchen for 6mths, but plan on owning another one later or sooner again :D 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? The favourite animal of the Florentine Nobles of the 15th Century, the Lowchen catered to the whims of the elite. Ladies at court clipped the hair from the dog's backs and used them as "hot water bottles". Developed in Europe, the breed has been traditionally clipped similar to the Portuguese Water Dog in the lion trim (poodle look). This is probably not its immediate origin, but the similarity of the Bichon family and the water dogs is emphasized by these comparisons. The Little Lion Dog undoubtedly evolved from the family of Bichons, as they travelled from the Mediterranean into Europe. Many feel that the breed was developed in Germany. 3. How common is it in Australia? Lowchens are rare to those that don't know what or who they are, but to those of us who have a love for them they are every where lol 4. What is the average lifespan? Teen, they have a longlife span 5. What is the general temperament/personality? HAPPY!! they are a happy go-lucky breed, love to please and they believe you are their entire world, thus making them a bit uneazsy when having to relocate. But mine was a very happy girl and loved to meet and greet everyone with a toungue down you're throat and straight up your nose too 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? Enought to keep them fit, a run around the yard, a quick walk. Lowchens excell at Obed and agility 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? In my honest opinion a Lowchen could fit into any home. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Yes. but they preferr to have company, otherwise they become bored and can be come destructive 9. How much grooming is required? Depends on the requirement, if a pet then a lowchen can be trimmed short or can be cut into shape but kept short, but if they are a show dog or wanted to keep long coated then they require more washes and clipping. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Not really, but if over excited a lowchen might be able to knock over a small toddler, just like any other dog can. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? I'll leave this up to someone who has more experienced. 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Don't go looking for colours, puppy lowchens change colour and keep changing colour lol, the lowchen I had was born Sable (cream Sable), she is from the last pics I have seen, she is now a cream ;)
  19. why has Lelune been taken off the Standard poodles? Lelune is the prefix we breed the Standard Poodles under and Darkrai is the prefix I'll be registering my Afghans under, I have 2 Prefixes. Both are registered.
  20. last couple of baths he's had I've mainly drying him with the comb. Normally he's dried off and groomed with a Slicker and a Metal Comb. Im hoping to get some Laserlite stuff next week, Im having silk widthdrawls
  21. I use swishy coat and blowdry cream. I use a human shampoo and conditioner, Pecan oil shampoo/conditioner can't remember who makes it but has brought his coat back from being so dry and brittle.
  22. Can someone switch in the Afghans Lelune for Darkrai please
  23. How do I prevent this in a long coated breed? When I wash Lucius our male Afghan, his coat has alot of static in his coat, how do I stop this?
