  1. what do you mean by "nope"? only the one has come out, seeing the vet today as I am quite worried. HOPEFULLY she isnt the second "show" dobe pup I've purchased with a funky mouth! will keep you all updated and thanks :)
  2. Thanks poppop and others.. I live in SA and I completely trust my vet I would just rather no anesthetic if I can avoid it. One bottom canine came out tonight, the other isnt loose though, also the two top adult canines have started coming through and the top baby teeth arent loose either so I will be keeping a very good eye on her mouth.
  3. Thanks all, good to hear. I will reassess at 5.5 months but one is now loose (overnight) so I think I'll be lucky with this one. Thanks very much again.
  4. Thanks Sway, Ive only just noticed them today and I inspect her mouth almost daily so I'm sure they havent been in long. Her breeder is in NZ, Ive shot her off an email as its pretty hard playing phone tag so thought I would ask her as well :)
  5. Hi all My newest Dobermann pup is 1 week shy of five months old. Ive noticed that her bottom adult canines are coming in whilst her baby ones are still intact. I'm asking here first as my vet is an hours drive away and I thought I'd get a general idea of what I'm dealing with before I call him. Should I be worried that this is happening? she is my newest show dog prospect so I do not want her adult teeth coming in the wrong way. Does anyone have any similar stories with this whereby the teeth just fell out naturally and the adult bite came in fine or do you recommend extraction straight away? She has RMB and I try and wiggle the teeth (they dont seem loose) so yeah not sure what to do. Thanks in advance for the replies. 0
  6. Toy: English Toy Terrier Small: Border Terrier or Schipperke (sp) Medium: Whippet Large: Dobermann, Saluki Giant: Wolfhound
  7. 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) Owner of four 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? as above, Germany, by tax collector Louis Dobermann as a personal guard 3. How common is it in Australia? Not very now that the docking ban is in 4. What is the average lifespan? 10 - 12 years 5. What is the general temperament/personality? Loyal, human-like, intelligent, stubborn, affectionate, goofy and too smart for their own good! 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? 1-2 hours 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? not easily, you have to be dedicated to training and raising them right otherwise they can get head strong and their sheer strength in the wrong hands can be dangerous 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? I'd say no, but depending on the age and exercise/toys given before being left alone for longer periods, you never know 9. How much grooming is required? next to none, quick brush maybe once a week, bath once every couple of months. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? can be yes 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? VWD, DCM, Wobblers, HD 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) You want hips and elbows x-rayed. VWD status of sire and dam. Holter echo monitor findings. Whether any dogs in the lines died from cardio and how far back are those dogs in the pedigrees. There are new tests in the USA that test for ONE of the genes known to cause DCM, they should be available in Aus shortly so soon there will be no excuse on it although even if a dog carries the gene it does not necessarily mean it will die from it or pass it on at all. I'd ask the breeder where he/she titles their dogs. No titles means NO NO in my book. If your dog is not good enough to be titled in conformation or obedience etc then that dog should not be bred unless MAYBE retired due to injury or bred to a dog that is titled. Two untitled dogs screams back yard breeder and I would run far away.
  8. My Dobes' nails dont reach the ground naturally so unfortunately that doesnt work for me either..bugger
  9. I did this to my new dobe pup the other day, so much blood! So much in fact that I was worried she may be VWD affected. I sympathise with you but its good he let you continue :) If I can be bothered I use a dremel, its essentially an electric file you can get them from bunnings etc, my experience is that you can get them shorter, rounder and smoother and you would have to be very unlucky to get the quick. The soap is a good tip thanks to those who suggested it.
  10. Ah thanks, I must of been reading an American forum SORRY CANIDAE! I fed the Salmon to my dobe but she is now with my parents. My new dobe is doing well on Ziwipeak, she was raised on Royal Canin maxi junior and she did well on it I must say. I heard feeding lamb every day is bad for dogs, does someone want to clear this up? OP your dog may not be responding well to the lamb in black hawk I have heard a few peoples dogs that have gone lackluster on lamb but have heard the same about chicken etc, you cannot go wrong with salmon in my opinion but again this could also not work for your dog. Go with whatever works for your dog, if the kibble doesnt read too well and you want to supplement, sardines in springwater are great for the coat, inexpensive and dogs love them!
  11. I am wary about TOTW because of who makes it, they may use GM potatoes. Canidae has been great for my Dobe but they changed the formula and I am also iffy about them. Artemis, Ziwipeak and Organix will be the only kibble I touch now.. wouldve gone to Evo or Innova but the company that bought them out tests on animals and they may change the formula very soon. What are you looking for in a kibble, what type of dog do you have etc?
