I am not entirely against a dog license being required. But I do have issues with there being too many requirements to have a dog. From the perspective of someone in my situation, we live 4 hours from our nearest capital which is about the closest place that obedience training is offered. Not really keen on 800km round trip weekly with my dog to teach it things I can teach it myself in the comfort of my own home just because there are dipshits who don't bother to train their dog. Theoretical test? Who's funding that? Are we allowed to say we feed raw or will the correct answer be "feed a nutritious kibble & treats occasionally", are we allowed to decide on our own vaccination & worming schedule taking into account management & environmental factors? Also the 8 hours of voluntary work in a pound, that's not a bad idea, but I'm pretty sure the nearest pound to me is at least 250km away. P-Plates & Full licensing is just another frustration to me. I dunno, reeks of nanny state to me. I reckon give unscrupulous BYB some more heat & educate puppy buyers not to fall for the cute puppies and actually ask questions of BYBs. If people would actually look at where they are sourcing their dogs & care about things such as health testing of breeding animals, early upbringing/socialisation/toilet training, nutrition, letting puppies go before 8 weeks of age, etc. there would be less unhappy dogs & owners in the world!! I'm not even talking about registered vs BYB - they want to make mutts they can go for their life, but there needs to be more people giving a crap about who is producing their pet. I don't even know if this makes sense but an example from a couple of days ago - a lone German Shepherd puppy, BYB, no mention of health testing (we all know that GSDs are at risk of hip displaysia and other issues - it's not my breed so I'm not sure of the others off the top of my head - and registered breeders do all they can to work on this), it's 7 weeks old, the last pup left (all others have gone to new homes) & the "breeder" wants it gone within the next 3 weeks "Ready to go now" as she is expecting a baby and doesn't want the puppy around. Yet there were no other people that seemed concerned about this. IMO that would be a good start - teach puppy buyers/future homes what to look for & not to just fall for cute pictures. JMO. Yesterday had me in a terrible mood from seeing the sheer number of willy nilly bred puppies on pets for sale pages some unreg breeders do the right thing, but there are many more who don't.

Same with Aussies & other double-coated breeds! Oh, except you can blow dry it out, don't need to clip unless it's really, really bad.

I've seen plenty of obese black labs, both entire and neutered, both sexes. In fact a solid black dog will often look fatter than the same shaped gold, fawn or cream dog next to it - it's an optical illusion. But black is slimming!?! BRB buying gold & cream coloured clothes

Good for those dogs, but I know someone who raised their dogs in the home, around their other animals, kids, they went to horse shows every weekend, etc. but they still ended up becoming killing machines - one day they escaped & got into a nearby red deer farm & enjoyed a four day massacre. On another occasion they attacked a girl riding her horse & the final straw for them was when they attacked and pulled down her riding pony stallion. Their owner used to be all about the "deed not the breed", brought them up as loved family pets & did everything supposedly "right" but her dogs still turned. Needless to say, that put her off the breed completely.

Thank you Rebanne, it was one of the first things I saw on my newsfeed this morning and was horrifying. There was a person stabbing this dog with a knife and it didn't even appear to notice. I really, really doubt that if it was a Cattle dog or GSD that it would be able to ignore that. And if I'm going to be attacked by anything, give me a Westie or Jack Russel over a Pitbull any day.

So would you take the same action if another type of dog seriously attacked yours as described as KatDogs, or only if ' this type' of dog did? You know that all types of dogs can and do attack, and do so so? It is always disappointing to see someone on a dog forum openly stating they are hostile towards types of dogs. Not dogs that behave a certain way, but dogs that look a certain way. The type of dog that has the tenacity to rip into any other dog and not let go until you block off its airways. So, all dogs then. Try investigating dog attacks for a living before deciding that serious attacks are only perpetrated by dogs of a certain 'type' or appearance. Did you read the whole thread? The dog in the OP was not a Bull Breed. You haven't answered my question as to whether you would lay in to and kill a dog of a different appearance if it attacked your dog in a serious manner - you only said you would do so for a certain type of dog. What would you do if another type of dog seriously attacked your dog? Your words imply it would be different. Yep, I probably would. The dog in the OP was a Mastiff, which is a breed bred for fighting, hunting & guarding. If a dog is bred for something, no amount of good upbringing will prevent the genetics coming through. How do Border Collies know how to use 'eye' when they are around livestock & Pointers instinctively know how to point?

Katdogs gosh that's terrifying! I like to think that if I were ever in the situation the other dog wouldn't get off lightly, it is in no way a victim even if injured IMO. No dog living in suburbia should be allowed in that situation or ever get away with it. If any dog attacked my dog like that I'd use any weapon I could get my hands on and wouldn't stop until the attacker was dead. After the video I saw this morning though I am feeling exceptionally hostile toward this type of dog.

Oh ok, that's different to what I was imagining! I thought it was a special kind of stick that you smack them with somehow...for some reason. Yeah for sure, that would definitely require some skill. And presence of mind (difficult if it's your dog being attacked ). I know a bullet would do the trick pretty quickly but it's not very legal to be walking around with a gun. (for good reason!)

I was on a group today where there was a video of a pitbull savaging a GSD pup (adolescent), they seemed to be saying that in that situation the only way to get them to let go is a break stick? No idea what that is, and it seems you need to know how to use it... My SIL got a SBT X Mastiff to let go of my Aussie Robo by just booting it in the head while wearing gumboots (but that was in the first few moments he grabbed on).

Wow I feel a lot better about my routines now. Mine get brushed every 1-2 weeks (the girls don't have as much hair as Tundra so he's more often) and maybe every month they'll get a wash? If that? When they're clean I let them inside more (not just in crates but in the lounge room :) ), much to the chagrin of my husband They often have a wash then do something disgusting like swim in the dam

I'm actually getting the the point of seriously considering whether I need to lightly rug Nova. He has been curling up into blankets and pillows so tightly at night it's uncomfortable to look at (I measured it last night at under 40cm dog ball lol). He is cold to touch. And he refuses to move. He can't be comfortable! He doesn't have a lot of coat for an Aussie and never really has. But maybe he just needs to grow more undercoat and that would prevent it?? Oh wow poor Nova! I will admit though, our temperatures probably don't quite get as cold as over east in the southern states!! I think Tundra runs fairly hot though, I tried to have him on the bed one night when Dwayne was seeding (late May) and he was panting and kept moving around to find a cooler spot!! Weird creature. Might be worth getting him a little jumper :)

If your dog has a double coat then yes, no point rugging it up. But use common sense - if the dog is curled up & shivering, it's cold. If it's panting a lot, it's hot. I'd be pretty stupid if I put a jacket on my dogs (floofy Aussie Shepherds) - even in the dead of winter they will swim in the dam if they're given half a chance! My SIL's Chinese Crested would much rather be curled up on the couch in a blanket. And yes he's got bedazzled jammies he looks fabulous in it. And the stupid bit about dogs knowing when they're being laughed at. I doubt it. If I laugh at mine they get even more goofy

That sounds absolutely horrific. Feel for the woman who found the deceased cat in the freezer Dang, I used to live in Wagga Wagga, I should've volunteered. I didn't even realise there was a pound/shelter...

My dog isn't really too interested in burying things that I've noticed... Maybe a couple of times I've seen dirt on his nose. But my two bitches - as soon as there are bones it's like a game of "who can bury it first"!! Then if someone sniffs it out they dash in, grab it and find somewhere safer for it. gosh it's a tough life. You'd think there weren't enough bones to go around.

I've been scratched by feral kittens & my dogs have licked scratches that I've gotten whether from wire or a graze or whatever and aside from the usual swelling I haven't had any other ill effects. That's just me personally though, I'm always getting scratches & cuts from my clumsy ways I would suggest that your main concern would be infection but not from tetanus so just keep it clean & continue with the betadine :) Good luck! I have a couple of S/S 1.4L bowls from K-mart that have lasted over a year with only a bit of fading because they're outside. They even still have the rubber lining around the bottom :)
