  1. I don't go for specific breeds I guess, it's just gotta be pretty. I like Goldies, Australian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Border Collies, Silky Terriers, Cairn Terriers...etc. Basically anything that more or less looks like them (First dogs were Kelpies or Border Collies, then we had a Golden for a while but my parents sold her, then got my little Silky Terrier X, now I have a farm Border Collie). Or the really sleek ones - I admire Salukis, Whippets, Borzoi, Pointers (I know they're not sighthounds but they're athletic & pretty) And I like Chinese Cresteds. They look like a LOT of fun!
  2. If you hover your mouse over the results you can then scroll and the list will move :) it tricked me too!!
  3. I was babysitting my mum's Aussie shepherd puppy and a guy walks past. He was half right when he said "Is it a sheepdog?" (I had my BC with me too) and I says "Yeah, he's an Australian Shepherd." "Oh, is that a German Shepherd crossed with a border collie?" WHAT!?
  4. I really don't have a problem with people's dogs being off-lead, but as soon as that dog (whether big or small) starts running up to my dog with any kind of dominant stance, even if it's friendly (!?), the fun is lost on me. I like being able to have my dog off lead (yes, in off-lead areas) but if another dog comes into his flight zone and he's more than a few meters away (i.e. I've kept walking while he's sniffing something in the ground) he'll nick off and no amount of calling will entice him back to me (I'm obviously not his safe place ) ...that's when I've got the problem with other dogs. I so wish that he wasn't such a scaredy cat!! And it's purely breedism on his side - if a border collie goes whizzing past he'll almost join them!! Any other dog - no way. We're moving back to the farm so I probably won't get to practice, but out of interest, what has everyone done on a dog that just nicks off? If it helps, I'm definitely his boss-dog...if I'm patting him and OH calls him he'll more or less ignore him, if we have friends over they can try to tell him to sit or drop and he'll completely ignore them but if I say it from the other side of the room he'll do it straight away and his recall is really good except when he's scared. (which is fair enough, I liken it to when a horse is bolting - it's just flight instinct) Any ideas?
  5. Yup. Everyone thinks my dog has been attacked by other dogs (he runs away from anything non-BC or Aussie Shepherd looking basically because they're two breeds that he's used to on the farm) but really he just hasn't known them. Then I say I got him off my in-laws' farm and they go on this massive "aawww poor doggie being locked up all day" Um. They're kept in yards so they don't go out and chase sheep/get bitten by snakes/hit by cars??
  6. Those retractable leads are freaking dangerous. I've been tangled up in one when a lady let her little JR run around me trying to get to my dog, who was of course cowering behind me (he has only really had experience with other BCs plus he's naturally submissive & timid...which is damn tiring to be completely honest!!) and as the dog was chasing him around me I was getting tangled in the lead. Somehow managed to stay standing and escape but it was really tricky because it was sun down. I get so annoyed when I see those stupid things because they just seem to be an excuse not to teach your dog to lead properly.
  7. Yup. I used to go nearly every day after work. Now it's just too stressful. Walks are supposed to be relaxing. Not interspersed with dogs barking at your dog (wouldn't be such a pain if it didn't mean he'd anticipate it before we're even 3 houses away), other people's "he's just friendly" dogs dragging their owner around, feral little SWFs growling and snapping at the end of their lead at my dog, etc. I don't even let him off the lead at the end of the road where there's a park if there are dogs there because I don't know if they'll come up and scare him off (he's got a good recall except when he's in a situation where he thinks the other dog is chasing him, then he'll just run. My calling him doesn't seem to help ). It's really crappy. Thankfully we're moving back to the farm in the next couple of months so we'll be able to go on walks together where he can chase rabbits and go on fun adventures
  8. I don't purposely feed it...but it steals my dog's food I did the survey :)
  9. My dog tends to choose me over my husband (who's known him longer because he was on my in-laws' farm) but when my MIL visited he sat right at her feet the entire time and if she talked he'd sit up at attention. I think it's more the dog chooses it's favourite person based on whose leadership it likes. IMO...
  10. Thanks for more input guys!! Like I said earlier, I wasn't meaning to offend and tar all of the breed with the same brush. I was just wondering where all the nice ones are because every single one I see out walking (in Perth, so possibly less good breeders/more BYB breeders = dodgy legs) looks wonky. So it was confusing because I'd always seen them as being so athletic and 'sound'. GSF & Pockets - THAT is what I wanted to see! They're gorgeous dogs. My friends are looking after a dog at the moment and I love her temperament but she's got the hip problems It's also really interesting reading about the working vs showing lines. I quite liked the video of the "ideal" movement!! But that's probably mostly because it actually looks sound as though it could run like that all day Again I'm sorry that my small sample size got me confused I was just asking because I was sure it couldn't possibly be what the breed is supposed to be like. I'm very relieved to see that there are nice ones out there!
  11. Hmm ok that's a bit sad then! Mixeduppup that's interesting about your friends - I was all into them, now I'm quite put off! So sad!! Are imports better? Say from Germany? (I saw a few nice ones in Videos from Germany on Youtube...) I'm more curious than out to get one, it's just been bugging me for a couple of weeks
  12. Hi, Please don't get me wrong - I love German Shepherds - but I've been very discouraged lately because the ones I've seen just don't seem to have athletic, straight-looking movement?? Their hocks kinda wobble side to side as they walk, they kinda look like they'd just topple over if you pushed them!? I'm really worried, because I just haven't seen a nicely moving one? Is it a sign of hip displaysia or bad breeding or both or what? Does anyone have any videos of desirable movement a GS should have?
  13. So...who's in the wrong if you're innocently walking your timid/submissive (runs away from any dogs friendly or not ) Border Collie on lead and someone's elderly-ish (salt & pepper nose) dog comes rushing out growling it's head off trying to get at my dog!? So I was blocking at it with my leg, trying to push it away on the shoulder so it'd just eff off!!! Eventually his owner follows it out. So I start walking away cos the dog seems to have stopped for a bit, but that set it off again (we weren't even in front of it's house at this stage!!) so I was trying harder to push/block/kick it away and the owner yells at me for kicking his dog! Fair enough, but surely he would've thought perhaps I don't appreciate his dog having a go at mine as we're just walking past!?!? So I was just all angry by then and just yelled at him to stop his dog from attacking mine and I wouldn't be kicking it!! Then we walked away and about 100m down the road I just burst into tears it was a similar feeling to falling off a horse I think! Felt slightly gutted and a little bit scared and yeah. Now I'm a bit less adventurous about walking different routes because you never know who you'll run into. And yeah I'm so tired of dogs in front yards running at the fence barking. Probably wouldn't bug me with another dog but more and more often, my dog is becoming more and more reluctant as we go past those houses - he'll even stop at the street before, so it's painful even going for a walk now!! I have no idea what else I can do because I use it as an opportunity to exercise myself for free (can't afford the gym!) while I have him with me and I feel slightly safer (in our neighbourhood) than by myself..... Dammit I miss farm life. Sorry about the wall of text. TL;DR - other people suck, barking dogs suck, etc.
  14. I got a 100% match with a Polish Lowland Sheepdog... And border collies were nowhere near the top 20!!
  15. Is there a way you can set up a way to keep them separated while you can't watch them? Just that way they won't play rough & your older pup gets some time away from the younger one.
  16. He looks like a sweetie :) I met a little similar-looking dog (puppy) a few weeks ago, some workmen had him with them and he just wandered over (I was helping my friend with her yard) and said hi, lots of wagging tail & wiggly bottom asking for cuddles :) Lots of great advice in this thread too :)
  17. I feel proud when my boy is at the vet (for the second time) and decides it's not scary any more and goes to sleep at my feet! And no wriggling when the vet was checking his ears :) Also when our friends' young child falls on him, he kinda just adjusts so that he's not under the child :p Not bad for a rather nervous/timid dog! :) And when he trots politely next to me when we go on walks, without getting overly concerned about other dogs (his concern is more to move away from them than to attack so usually I end up just going off the path a little to give him space). I just kinda repeat these things to myself when I get discouraged that he doesn't "do" fetch or play with toys with me or anything like that, very low drive to do much
  18. Yup. Toby doesn't recognise small dogs as "dogs"...they're just scary yappy things that rush out at him and scare the hell out of him. (Poor boy just lays right down as small as he can on the ground would be seriously concerned if he snapped at one!
  19. My boy will sit there and just put his paw on my leg. Or arm. Or whatever he can reach. And keep patting me. I think it's adorable because he's such a reserved dog so it's a bit special when he does it... But I try not to encourage it too much.
  20. It's weird isn't it. The farm dogs (BCs) look clean every day of the week & AFAIK they have never been washed :p but hey, they have white bits that are white!!!! Spins me out.
  21. I hate them. Probably because we came across a JRT that was not under control and was just free to come up and get my dog and I tangled in the cord...was not a fun experience. Didn't get any cuts but it wasn't exactly enjoyable trying not to step on this yapping jumping little rat of a thing while trying to hold onto my dog who was attempting to remove himself from the situation :p Ditto on the people saying that they always seem to take it as a license to be in la-la land??
  22. I have a red (or brown?) and white border collie... Wait for it.... Toby. :D (Harry's Practice anyone???)
