How Do You Satisfy Your Dog's Prey Drive?
hankdog replied to raineth's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Haha Jake refuses to put anything except food in his mouth. Somewhere way back there must be a hunting gene, occasionally he will drop into a stalking stance and point and stalk. I always scare off whatever he's stalking by laughing so loud. Not always a live object, can be a bucket, a pile of leaves, a butterfly, pretty much anything thats around. Pity he didn't get the smart gene. -

I hate the little turds that do that. I think some little dogs know when a dog is on leash that's the way to attack. Poor Hank actually ended up with stitches on his back leg from a fox terrier once. -

Raineth Jake always used to keep having a go at the dog over his shoulder. Our goals for Jake are modest, so we don't really work with the aim of making him dog friendly more just encouraging an avoid response. Basically he got rewarded for looking away and then only on the second look away. So bark, look at me get some verbal encouragement then look quietly at the dog then reward with peanut butter on the second look. Over time this seems to eliminated that continued having a go over his shoulder. This morning with Zoei handling him he was able to get about 2m from a girl Rottweiler that I was patting. He was really nice and calm and was able to look directly at her and not freak out and then he walked himself away. A bit later he freaked at a dog that came round the corner but one verbal correction from Zoei and he sort went "oh fine, I'll just go somewhere else....grumble, grumble." It's actually really those incidents that are good for me to see and try imitate. Just need to practice my Zoei voice. -

Ha one day I'm going to video Jakes excited mode. It's hilarious you can see his left eyebrow change angle. That's it. Some days I do miss having a normal dog. Today as I was leaving my veggie patch I saw two youngsters with a dog coming towards me. U turn using my interrupter noise (tongue clicking) straight through the gate and down the hill. No looking back and a potentially nasty situation didn't happen. Most useful tool I have. -

Try teaching the behavioural interrupter, it's on k9pro website courtesy of Steve Courtney. That and your emergency u turn will get you out of trouble. Practice it heaps while you're out and about, it helps your crazy dog lady reputation no end for people to see you suddenly zing around and make off at speed for no apparent reason. I see in Neks post on Rocky that he's better if full of food. I'm goingcto try giving Jake a bit of kibble before his morning walk to see if it helps. I know I'm cranky and more anxious if I'm hungry. -

Haha got to be careful, I'm pretty sure Jake reads DOL, maybe he and Stella text each other to come up with new evil schemes. Actually last week after the rain we were walking along, he stepped on the concrete lid of a manhole. The rain must have damaged the side because suddenly I was looking at a little bulldog head poking out the ground. He'd gone perpendicular down and his collar just slid off, I was very glad about that handle. It wasn't particularly deep but he was quite wedged. The weirdest things happen to Jake. -

I have Jake on the ruff wear webmaster and I must say its given me so much more confidence. He cannot get out of it and I'm more prepared to take him on because I know it. Front attach just slid off but then he's an odd shape. The harness is attached at my waist and I hold his martingale collar leash. If I were to slip or die at least he is anchored to me. Jake always has a slightly different take on what he's supposed to learn. I taught him to go on the mat and he got massive rewards for putting his head down on his paws. Now he uses this position to "check out" so if he has had enough of training or he doesn't want to do something then he lies down and puts his head on his paws. He's a funny little soul, Jake doesn't do what Jake doesnt want to do. He has about a twenty five minute attention span and after that it's no go. You could wave a fillet steak in his face he wouldn't care. You can leash him up and drag him, he just goes jellybones and the next time you try do whatever it was you got no chance. I love my Norty dog but I know when I'm beat???? -
The dog was originally surrendered in Texas, it savaged a trainer and was then due to be euthed. Released to dog psychology center with the help of some rescue group but then moved out of state where it attacked again. I believe it's similar here, the dangerous dog status diesnt go with the dog interstate? There was a Qld dog that got moved across the border last year by its owners for the same reason. Silliness really.

Yep another dog saved my sanity mom here. Having to go for a walk every day was time well spent with my kids, it got us all out the house and into fresh air. Yea everyone was covered in hair, there are worse things. I cried into that lovely long hair on bad days, brushing out that hair calmed me when I had other things in mind for that brush. I'm pretty sure that dog heard more tears and secrets than any shrink. Sounds like the woman just isn't coping with her family and the dog's paying the price, at least she recognizes it.

It happens and you did the right thing. Get the heck out of there, get home, get calm and start again another day. If what ahe did was bolt for home then that's not a bad thing. She's clearly seeing her home and crate as safe, that's great. If I had a choice between fight, flight or freeze I'd pick flight each time. Jake picks fight and I pick freeze, we're just useless. -
Yes it's the same but with a rope - it is the Durafoam Swing n Fling ball. It is awesome - one of my favourite ball on a rope toys. My other favourite is the Chuckit Ultra Tug which is an Ultra ball on a rope - AWESOME and extremely durable toy. It comes in a small size as well as medium and large, whereas the Swing n Fling ball only comes in the larger two sizes. So it is good for dogs with smaller mouths like BCs, kelpies etc. Thanks :D she filled out in the chest more since those pictures were taken, she packs a bit more of a punch now  Scary but strangely compelling. I must go see this stuff in action one day, but I'll be looking through my fingers.

Wow that's a big set of teef. Great action shot.

I so want a ball fetching dog. When we got Hank my son was so excited because he was going to play with his dog that was going to be named Hunter and play with balls. So he was named Hank and had no interest in balls. Jake doesnt like to fetch anything, I've tried everything and I can get a slightly sustained hold on a piece of sheepskin but that's it. Next dog is going to have to pass the ball fetching test before it comes home. If only so I can photos like the one above????.

I sometimes wonder if they're connected. Some little gene mutation that makes things go wrong. We learned a new, super awesome trick over the holidays. It's called "two steps and sit." I've taught it using my super awesome best trick in the world voice with a hundred percent reward, a bit like the behavioural interrupter. We used it for the first time in training on Friday and it went really well. He got really close to a little dog that was barking at him and on his second approach remained calm and was able to decide to turn and leave. He then went and sniffed in a pile of fresh cut grass!!! He's been reasonable, (there's always that one dog) at stopping and doing LAT whilst the other dog walks away so I feel he's up to starting to be able to move past dogs whilst we are out. I've been doing lots of practice at getting him to do his tricks at distance and to walk out and go touch an object. He is pretty smart at knowing if he's tied and not creeping forward on each repitition but once the leash is off he does seem to end up closer each trick. Eventually I'd like to get this one at distance too but that could be a bit too ambitious, but then home training is about stuff you can't do. -
Alright I finally have a thing to plug into the new computer so it all works...sheesh its supposed to be easy. week 4 The arrivaal of the apex predator in the veggie patch, my food chain is complete. week5 The creek is full. and a bonus because they're adorable. My special boys.

Love how he gets slightly side tracked when chewing the bed.

I'd go with just oiling everything, that's pretty much my approach to housework though.

Probably wouldn't care about "real fighting" roosters. Two birds in a ring with a crowd betting on the outcome makes as much money as fancy fighting birds.

Ha Zig looks like me trying to do yoga.

Jake spent most of the day sitting on the verandah watching the rain. We had clients mid morning and they brought some spare kids so he was delighted to roll around for belly rubs and then back to boring rain watching. There was a pause and he came and called me and bounced around until I got the message and went for a walk. Perfect timing it held off until we got home. Off course he had to be towel dried, well it was that or let him continue to dry himself by rolling around in the giant pile of clean washing.

At least Jake is straight forward because he thinks slowly.. I'd hate to get into trouble with one of the smart breeds. -

Poor Jake is allergic to heat. He's itchy and cranky and the cortisone doesn't help his manners. It's sad one dog gets so many issues. Trainings back on Friday so we are hanging out for that. -

Haha yea I've seen my trainer taking a very deep breath with me sometimes. I know he's better if I'm harder with him but I'm such a sap. I guess it must be annoying to see the hard work you've done be undone by the owner.
