Be reasonable? Still loving those red floors.

Kikopup has a good YouTube thing about giving in to leash pressure that might help.

I'm a farm dog, please let me be outside a lot. I want to dig, play in mud and gallop around. I'm smooth coated but please rinse me off regularly because I want to be clean and I want to snuggle in bed and on the couch with you. I want a doggie friend to hoon around with and I'm good with little critters but I'm not overly fond of cats. Please be kind to me, I'm a gentle dog and I try hard. If I don't get it right the first time it's because I didn't understand. I dont want to go in the car a lot and I'm not big on strangers but I like walks and once I know people I can be very friendly. I'm pretty much a slightly shy boofhead.

You may find the Great Dane rescue website helpful. There are useful tips for dealing with sep Anx in particular but I've found it's made it generally easier to live with my boy around the house. Good luck and there's a thread in the training and obedience section where owners of reactive and speshul dogs go for help, advice and general face palming over our norty dogs on bad and good days. -
Hope Stan got a red carpet?

Sometimes life just gives you what you need. Sometimes to help you up and sometimes to teach you a lesson. I'm still trying to figure out which Jake is but you should just go with it. Methinks lovely Delilah there will tell you which it is.

Post your general area and people can recommend a good behaviorist, they're not all the same. Unfortunately a dog such as this is going to bring a lot of extra responsibility and an experienced behaviorist will be able to map out and explain to you your management plan. Two years of managing an anxious dog and I can tell you it's hard work and you need to explore all your options including medication and possible PTS but really an experienced person needs to see the dog. -
My dogs a dope because ....... He wallows in his clam shell, stands up, shakes himself dry then lies down again.

How do you know a rescue is reputable though? I have a friend who got her dog through a well known rescue and he bites unpredictably, about two people a year. I got the rod for my back from the pound and once you've had a difficult dog you never want to repeat the mistake. Some reactive dogs are made and some seem to just be born that way. I think I'd rather have an adult because then you might be able to judge personality better. I'm way to scared if I took a pup it might turn out wrong.

Well that's a pretty gorgeous house guest Skyefool.

I used to have Hank on a leash and he was pretty good at a tongue click for turn right and waving my left hand for left turn. Good idea until I was riding with a friend and accidentally pointed at a house on the left side.

So sad, holding thumbs for Maggie. -
My old possibly Shepard x Wolfe used to come with me, he would go upwards if about 20k I'd say. Off road so not too hard on the joints, we could be our for an hour or more. He was a good height to bike with.

Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
hankdog replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'd like to thank everyone in this thread for their support and encouragement. It has meant the world to me this year. Looking back to the beginning of the year we have made huge progress, I now have lovely trainers who have a genuine interest and liking for Tubby. He has progressed from being unable to see other dogs whilst on walks to being able to at best ignore them or at worst lay into his peanut butter jar. There have been passing references to one day attending classes which would be my dream. It's been lovely to have you guys to share my ups and downs with as you really are the only people who can understand how special those little victories are! Big hugs to all my speshul dogfriends! -
Hahaha I was looking on my phone without glasses and didn't spot the mistake!!! Darn that's good.

WE had a last blast action photoshoot for the year, Well done to everydog. Its been a joy to watch Clay growing up into such a graceful, elegant dog. Gertrude your photoskills have been amazing. Impatiens you have such a lovely snuggly boy some photos make me seriously think a spaniel might be in my future. TLC I missed your happy pack pictures. I hope everyone has a safe start to the new year and 2014 brings you much happiness.

Well I never achieved my goal of photographing Tubby with a live dog so we will keep motoring on.

My allergic to everything bulldog Turns cherry red and gets very lethargic for a few days if I use Advantix. He seems ok on frontline although I read it's not as effective. I guess each dog will react according to their body chemistry.
-
If there's flea dirt the nasties are still there, Hank got them once and I never saw a flea just the dirt. I guess the bites would itch for a few days anyway. I heard that the advantix should only be done a day or two after a bath because it needs the skin oils to get carried through, if you do it too soon after a bath it doesn't work.

So would this be instead of the 52 weeks for dogs?

Gnarly subject but one worth discussing. I don't have a breed preference so I'll take a rescue dog. However I have learned a huge lesson with my present DA dog. I have no idea if or how I would get my next dog. I know a breeder who is genuinely interested in furthering her chosen breed, she carefully vets potential owners and rehomes her puppies that boomerang. I also know a breeder who got two dogs, did what she needed to register with the authorities and was purely in it for money and has no responsibility for her pups after monies have changed hands. Although registered I believe they're no better than byb. Absolutely the people responsible for the pounds overflowing are those who physically dumped their dogs but I wonder how many breeders would give up breeding if they were responsible for rehoming failed puppies? I also wonder if the designer dog/mongrel thing causes problems. People buy a dog expecting one thing and suddenly find that instead of a pug with sporty jack Russell abilities they have a terrier personality with pug breathing issues and the looks of neither?
-
It's difficult isn't it, Hank was bombproof so I never gave it a thought but getting Tubby in and out is a nightmare and he loves finding ways to go to the vet. I actually take him home and then go back and pay. he's crate trained but I couldn't get him in the crate up and down out the car plus if he got freaked out I'd never get him in it again.
-
Maybe it's a new designer breed, do they come in the rare blue colour?
-
I wish vets had a better system for their waiting rooms. Small fenced cubicles and better time management maybe. We enter via the side door because we are speshul but now that the leaks and gremlins accompanying others' critters have been pointed out I'm looking at it a whole new way.
