British Bulldog Training
hankdog replied to zeusmilne85's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He's gorgeous. I know pet resorts has a terrigal branch if that's closer. Zoei does a few days there I think. You might only need a few sessions to get you on the right track. Bulldogs are of course the best human trainers, I bet he has you doing a bunch of stuff for him. -
British Bulldog Training

I think if you post a picture that will help????????. I got my boy as a 5 year old with no training and he has learned a bunch of stuff but they aren't really the same to train as other dogs. You have to be very clear on what's in it for them. I've used clicker training for tricks and it works well. Start reward rich and then fade. I kind of think whereas other dogs think "what can I do for my owner," bulldogs think "why would I do that for my owner?" Very smart dogs but easily bored, short training sessions with only a few repeats of each command. I train at pet resorts in Dural, Zoei is my trainer and she's one of Jakes people. She gets bulldogs. -
Woohoo, the world is seven squishy faces richer!!!

Good luck, hoping there's a good outcome.

Fed the dog pastry, took him to a dog beach and now he's in NSW. No, no and no!

What Do You Say When You See A Dog Being Mistreated?
hankdog replied to BarbedWire's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's one of the sad things about the easily bought soon forgotten poodle mixes that they need cost care that doesn't happen. I've been told before that because they're not purebred they don't need grooming. -
Wow, I can't believe how great those are and you took them on an iPhone. Well done!

Yep, start to understand why council rangers feel dispirited. Here they've done the right thing and now some other rangers are going to get their problem.

What Do You Say When You See A Dog Being Mistreated?

Thanks Mrs RB that's a great summary. I'll print it out for all my acquaintances who have bull breed hysteria. Actually it's causing major upheaval in the family because there's disagreement on euthing the dog. It's one case that I do think it would be a kindness. -
Sounds like the guy that moved from up the road six months ago. Both he and his two dogs were a menace. Most of the suburb became too afraid to walk past their fence and he had a few run in for walking his aggro dogs off lead on the bush path. I would get onto council, they can just get a ranger to swing by that park and keep an eye.

I have a crate in the car, stretches to secure it. I worried about being rear ended and my dog running around in a road. With Jake I would think he would be so freaked out if something happened that it's best he's crated so that people could just take the crate out the car without trying to handle him.

I think I own the weirdest dog in the world. I didn't go to training for 2 weeks after I got back from os because my car was written off when I was away. I noticed a decline in Jake, I decided he must be getting old. He just seemed less sparkly, although he's not really a wildly enthusiastic dog. Went to training last week, he kissed my trainer and we just hung out in the shed because if the rain. Good news he's been happy ever since, I guess he's formed a bond with Zoei and just needed to see her. Funny little dog. I will never understand him. -

I've never seen an alpha roll but I reckon if you did it to the wrong dog you'd be in trouble. I'm pretty game with most dogs but I wouldn't have been putting myself in close physical contact with the biting end of Jake when I first got him. I have a friend with an unpredictable dog who every now and then bites people. Since he bit the owner he is banished to outside and gets little attention. He has to be sedated to be clipped every now and then, no grooming in between. They know about training because I talk about my experiences with them in the hope it will rub off. No joy, I'm finding it hard to be friends with them. -
Oh well I must tell the lady who told me that her breed of dog don't recall. Nope, no point in training them to, they're genetically independent!!!

Have You Already Picked Out Breed/name For Your Next One?
hankdog replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
I love katniss, that's going to be on the list if I ever get a sleek elegant dog. So the name Thundercleese was top of the list but now I just called my new (to me) black Citroen van that but I'm ok because I just stole the name Baylee from the Rotti thread. ???????? Thanks Grumpette. -

There's a school of thought that says just act neutral when a dog approaches so your dog follows your lead but I've found with Jake I am better off warning him. Steve told me he needed to learn a new script for how to behave and I find that he does better in all situations if we have a regular "ritual" that we follow. He has poor vision so I will generally see a dog before he does. Then I call out in a happy voice "dog coming." Which is cue for sit, panic, look at me, get some peanut butter....more panic, more peanut butter and then by the time he sees the dog it's almost a relief. A lot of theory revolves around getting your dog to trust in your ability to be in charge. For Jake I think telling him I see the dog helps him believe I have his back rather than him thinking I just wander along and he has to be looking out for dogs. It might be helpful to start something similar with your pup Jemmy. Maybe when you first see the dog coming just a short "dog coming" and then a look command. Reward the look and then ask her to look at the dog and reward for looking back at you and then move on. I guess you don't want to make every dog a big deal but you do want her to learn to look at you when she's startled rather than going for a woof. -
I think that's very responsible and I applaud you for not simply returning her. I too would euth rather than rehome my dog. It's sad but ultimately may be the best thing to do. An anxious dog and in her second home already, I'm sure the rescue folk will tell you it's a story they hear a lot. I'm sorry you've landed in this situation. If you say where you are people may be able to give you guidance to a good behaviourist who can assess what your chances of rehabilitation are if you feel you need an expert opinion.

Now you have the answer to will she bite so if you take her on you will have to be super careful. I own a dog who will bite, he weighs 26 kg and is at the upper limit that I can manage. You will need to walk her muzzled and double leashed. You can't take her to places where dogs are allowed off leash and you will need to be vigilant when out walking that you are not approached by off leash dogs and cross the road when another dog comes along. You will need the help and guidance of an experienced behaviorist and the support if a good vet, both for behavioural medicine and the hassle of getting such a dog in and out of appointments. I can't say whether I would have taken on my boy if I'd known what I was in for but I wouldn't take on another such dog. It's a lonely, isolating and stressful experience whereas dog ownership should be fun. You do however adjust and if you just can't imagine life without your dog then you do what you need to. If you do take her on then please feel welcome in the reactive dog thread. Best of luck with your decision.

Has Anyone Ever Judged The Way You Raise Your Dog?
hankdog replied to Steph M's topic in General Dog Discussion
A rescue, reactive bull breed, separation anxiety, Prozac, has a range of groovy Jammie's, sleeps on the couch and bed. Hell yea I judge me for not treating all my other dogs this way. Previous dogs had to sleep on the floor and spend time outside, in the wild, without me. ???????????????? -
I went through this with my Hank two years ago. I sort of knew it was close and then came home one day to back legs gone. He was only about 12, everything else was in top working order. Given you are really thinking about it I would be writing down three times a day her pain score, by your estimate, out of ten. Look at it after a week and see if the answer is there.

Yep, you gotta have big girl pants if you have a reactive dog!! That and rhino hide for skin and a megaphone voice. -
Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
hankdog replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hey Mrs RB, never sure whether it's a joyous occasion to welcome a new voice in here or commiserate. The thing about having a reactive dog is that whilst we manage them so many people are blissfully ignorant that their "friendly" lunging dog is a problem. If everyone just minded their own business life would be so much easier. Snook I sort of went through a big avoidance stage and whilst obviously I stick to the open road and avoid areas where people congregate or I know dogs may be I sort of have accepted that $&it happens. I do practice in my garden stepping in front and yelling, poor chooks look mighty confused when we do that. I'm reasonably confident Jake will stay behind me, and he's used to that drill but you have to walk your dog. The world is full of numpties and off leash dogs. I don't look forward to what could happen, I try to be like a dog and just enjoy the walk. Then I come home and collapse in a relieved pile. -
Excellent a minor adjustment now and you're saving yourself huge heartache later.

I guess the dog gets destroyed and a few days later the owners will have a new dog. Owning a reactive dog this kind of dog and owner combination is my worst nightmare, I wish they Would be prevented from having a dog.
