Genetic Issue In <1yo Dog - Breeder Responsibility?
LisaCC replied to Mike Echo's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm sure you will get lots of responses by more knowledgable people and breeders, but myself, I would probably only look into it if the genetic problem was something that should have been tested for in the parents of that breed, but was not. If it's not something that should of been tested for I don't see how the breeder is at fault. They would probably like to know about it regardless for the future of their breeding program. Very sorry that you've had such problems with such a young dog -

Envy is so beautiful! I love her ears :) She looks very big for 2 weeks ago! My big ones are already uploaded on my facebook page and I get the image link from that. I think others use flickr or photobucket etc. -

I don't know how or why but the Puppy breath is back!! Perhaps it went away because I wormed him on Monday! But he just breathed on me and it was mesmerising. (My friends and family think I'm nuts) -
Goodluck! And I think we need photos of your baby boy

MOST pups won't toilet in their sleeping area. But if you read through the puppy threads you will find that you do get some that do. If he wakes up, take him out to pee (set alarm again, at least for the first night). If he has JUST peed and is still up, let him settle himself. I did find in the first week that sometimes Nova would get up to pee, come back to me to go back inside then wake straight back up because he then needed to poop (but he had very loose stools in his 1st week). But if you know he doesn't need to poop/pee again then you can let him settle himself back to sleep. If you are lucky and he consistently wakes you up to pee/poop with no accidents by morning, then you might be able to forego the alarm the following night.
-
Also you may find after tonight that 2hours isn't the right timing for your pup, they are all different.
-
Sounds great Lelu :) You might also get extremely lucky like I did and have him wake you up instead! If he is fast asleep when you want him to go to bed you might not need to put a chew in there anyway (because he will probably need to go straight out and pee after ). He could just go to sleep straight in it.

You don't need a Kong :) Nova only learnt how to use his Kong properly in the last week, they can be hard for some pups. When he is tired pop him in the crate, give him a chew in there, feed him in there. Just make it a nice place to be :) First night and if he is not in your room were you can hear him stir easily, then yes I'd start with every 2 hours or so. Then extend it if he is holding it. If he is in a pen though it might be big enough that he doesn't try to hold on and he might just go in the corner, this is why crates are great at night :)
-
After a few days you might not need to set an alarm, if it becomes a habit for him to wake you up when he needs to pee. I didn't need to set an alarm at all, Nova would wake me, and after 2 weeks Nova was holding from 10pm to 5:30-6. I know it's hard and you lack a lot of sleep, but if you can put in the hard work at the beginning it makes it one hell of a lot easier in the long run. Where does he sleep at night? Are you crate training?

Congrats on your new addition :) I suggest to try not to use the pee pads over night, set alarms and take him outside so he does not get used to going inside at all. Don't say "NO" when he does pee inside. Pick him up when you see him do it and run him outside and let him finish out there. If you scold him when he does pee he might decide not to go in front of you at all. What are you doing with him in the hour or so you are waiting outside with him? Don't play with him, just take a book out and make yourself comfortable. If he falls asleep outside without peeing, then maybe run him around for a while, and stay outside until he goes, pups need to pee after exercise.

Hope you get it figured out Zereuloh. It's taken a month, but Nova has finally worked out how to use his Kong Wobbler! -
I have no idea what exactly I'll need, but I do know that they use whitening shampoo on their whites! Even though Nova doesn't have a lot

Degnerative Nerve Disease / Disc Issue

Have you tried those harnesses that have elastic and bands that wrap around his feet, there are a few different brands? We were looking into some for Sam as recommended here and by our vet. -
Exactly what Dory said. I love seeing things you can't get at normal petshops. Maybe some local small businesses that do things like custom collars/ pet photographers. Demonstrations of different dog sports go down well. Maybe stalls by different breed clubs and rescues? Promote buying from responsible sources.

Fingers crossed Whippy! Nova got a big duck toy that quacks, some balls, a giant Bunny shaped Kong Wubba, some treats, next size up collar, a martingale in that size as well, some ear cleaner, some whitening shampoo for when we start showing, a bigger slicker brush and an undercoat rake. I feel like I'm missing other things too...

Yep off the entire store if you are a member. That money didn't include food lol. Damn spoiled puppy.
-
Well Petstock has 20% off store wide for members, spent over $120 this morning. But stocked up on stuff for the future too. Whippy is the litter due in September or is that when the mating is taking place?
-
Just a thought, how are you acting when he does poo, inside or outside? Perhaps he is hesitant to poo in front of you because you have been getting angry when he is pooing inside.

Gross lol Well I had the day off today, so I built a wobble board! Super easy to make, 60cm diameter piece of board, super glued some non slip rubber matting to the top (couldn't get any nice colours ), cut the top off an overly large dog tennis ball (not the giant ones) and super glued that to the middle of the bottom. Nova my little star jumped straight on it and started offering me stands, sits and drops! I didn't even need to steady it for him -

I suggest giving your breeder a call and asking them their thoughts :) -
This in my opinion is bull crap. Plenty of threads on it as well. My last dog was desexed at 6 months and didn't start those behaviours until 3 months later, you just train them not to do it. Take your breeders advice and do it 9months +

Ahhh that makes more sense. I've never had a dog with rear dewclaws but yes have heard they can pose more problems. -

Dogs use their dew claws quite a lot! Just watch Tyrion make fast turns and stops closely, they are like extra breaks! They will also scratch themselves with them and even use them like toothpicks!
