A Follow On Thread For Those Who Now Have Their Puppy
LisaCC replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Puppy Chat
Oh Lhok, I'm so sorry Treble might not work out as an assistance dog, I hope the other trainer can find some potential in him. Regarding other potential dogs, what about a pup bred specifically to be assistance dogs? Like how the guide dogs have their own breeding programs? I'm glad he is making you laugh though :) Sometimes all you need is a big boofy dog -

It is probably just because he's being quarantined but just remember the more you exercise him the fitter he will get (but so will you ). Did you crate train him? Perhaps you need to bring the crate back out for night time. Go back to basics, night is for sleeping. -

Lollipup, Nova gets GSD too lol, I'm pretty sure just because of the name Australian Shepherd. I had another guy just keep saying 'No but what is he made of?" Me: "They are a purebred dog", "Yea, but what are they made of". So I just said "If he was a Labrador would you ask the same thing?" Next time I'll just say Yup, he's a Koolie x German Shepherd, his tail got bitten off by a rampaging goat. Aliwake, they are great looking bowls! I think Nova would be liek Nixon was and just attempt to break it Hmm A corgi is part husky? That person must be living a sheltered life! I'm glad you liked it :D Gotta love enabling people! -
I was just about to say the same thing, play his favourite game with him, chuck a few commands in and then keep playing. Make training fun.

Nova is free to go in the backyard by himself. I guess it's up to you, what you think would be best for Hank.

Thanks Hankodie, and yea, I get stopped constantly. Had a man yesterday ask me what mix he was and after I told him he was an Aussie he just went "Nah mate, thats a koolie cross". Urghhhhh, people annoy me lol. Looks like it was an awesome day Smash! Attention Zerelouh! I happened to come across a collar and leash set that Tyrion NEEDS to have when he is big I think you should get it with red stones instead of pink and with an engraved plate that says 'A Lannister always pays his debts' Then if god forbid he ever gets lost, people will know you will make good on the reward. I found it on the Karma Collar facebook page -

Have you seen those fancy mental stimulation food bowls... Hmm I can't think of what they are called, but they have heaps of moving parts and stuff. They could be good while you can't take him out. -

Oops sorry hankodie, I posted at the same time as you and missed your post! If your breeder thinks you can give him chicken necks give them whole. I don't give chicken necks to large pups/dogs as I worry too much about choking. Nova gets 1/2 a turkey neck instead! They are gigantic! EDIT: Lol my autocorrect keeps correcting your name to Hankie -

I know Lhok! I keep looking at photos from only a few weeks ago, he has more than doubled in size! He was just under 4kg when I got him at 8weeks, and he was 10.3kg on Friday at 14weeks! How are you and Treble going? Great that Tyrion is going well, hopefully you can get his buttheadedness sorted out -
11 Week Old Boxer Puppy Admitted To Hospital
LisaCC replied to Boxbright's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
See if the Neuro will rule out Coonhound Paralysis. My partners dog Ruby came down with paralysis earlier in the year, two dogs were admitted to the specialists for the same problem and it was down to either Coonhound Paralysis or Death Adder bite (tests for snake bite where negative but that doesn't mean everything). She was treated at the specialists for over a week and now she is perfectly fine, as is the other dog. Thread on it here -

Oh no! How is Tyrion going at puppy school? We have finally heard from obedience school and beginners is starting up Monday week! Yay! And thanks, I think he is turning into a pretty handsome man More cuteness for your eyeballs! Mmmm frozen chicken frame! -
I agree with this, I think you should make a complain to the board. I'm so sorry about this I wish you and Bruno the best of luck. Crossing my fingers and toes that it hasn't spread.

I'm pretty sure Nova has gotten the hang of ignoring people. This is this morning at quite a busy coffee shop, people on the tables either side of me, some with children and waitresses weaving between. Bonus I only had to tell one person to please ignore him! -
I put myself in a position that it never happens :) When he is out he is on a lead or on a long line so I can always reel him in if need be. But I haven't needed to, he will recall away from playing with other dogs and even meaty bones. Another great book is Controlled Unleased, The Puppy Progam. You can get it in hard copy or Ebook version here. That site also has 'The Focused Puppy' Here but I don't think there is an Ebook version I really like that The Focused Puppy has training games etc set out by age, with a checklist at the end of each chapter so you can keep track of what you are teaching EDIT: If you can't find it in Ebook, I ordered The Focused Puppy from here as it is an Australian site, so cheaper shipping :)

Missing Australian Shepherd And German Shepherd
LisaCC replied to Sammyelle's topic in General Dog Discussion
They are both beautiful! Glad you found them -
I do the same as Kavik, but also when out training on a long line I will throw in a recall as well. I taught the word COME, by having Nova right in front of me with a clicker (If your dogs doesn't understand the clicker but understands 'Yes' just use that). First I did the Name Game, where I said 'Nova' then click and shove some food in his face. So "Nova"=Look at me. Then when he was getting that, I would wait until he was a step away from me say "Nova Come", click for the step forward and reward, slowly increase distance. I've done this since 8 weeks and I still play this game from just a step away. He has a great recall at the moment, I know it may drop off as he gets older so I keep reinforcing with the inside game. I learnt these game from the book 'The Focused Puppy'. Great book :)

The fact they are calling them blonde labs says it all I'd be guessing Mum is actually a golden retriever or lab x Golden Yup, 'Blonde', 'gold', 'cream', 'white'. Anything other than Yellow is a sure sign to me to run away. It's like calling a 'Red' Border Collie 'Wheaten'.
-
Don't feel slack :) I'm pretty sure Kavik is of the same mind, but as well as basic manners I'm putting in foundations for agility and obedience. Its all quick fun games :)

Urgh, congratulations Hankodie, you survived horrible children! I think you did as well as anyone could of hoped in that situation. I can't stand children so I definitely would of cracked it Ohh and I like your training vid :) I need to take one but I need to find a person to hold it, as our training sessions involve me running around like a dickhead lol!! I'll try to make one of a quiet inside game. -
You cant, puppy needs to get up and pee! He'll be able to hold it for longer and longer over time. 7am is good!
-
Generally the shots are given 1 months apart. I'm pretty sure you can;t give pups the heartworm shot anyway I thought they had to be a minimum of 6 months.

Seeing as you have an Aussie. Come join us on the Aussie thread here! We love photos

With Nova (14wks) on an average day (so not including play dates, spontaneous trips to the river etc) and excluding general play. I will do either a short walk or go to the park and do long line work (tires him out more than walks). Which at the moment involves lots of recalls with distractions, tugging and retrieving. Also lots of free time to sniff around and play in puddles. I generally take him somewhere with people where he is to sit/walk with me and ignore people, so to my uni or to a coffee shop. Then at home we do lots of short training sessions of basic commands like sit, drop, stand (also transitioning between the three) and stays. Some targeting, his favourite game at the moment to put his paws on a coster, I move it around in different places. I'll be trying to hide it soon like 'hide and go seek'. And some shaping and trying new tricks (currently attempting Roll over). Heeling. All of the above use both food and toy rewards so lots of tugging and chasing during all the training. We do body awareness stuff to, on the wobble board and front feet/back feet on stuff, put all feet in a box etc. Waiting for obedience school to come back from holidays and then we will have that once a week. Working his brain tires him out more than just walking etc. PS: I'm sure i'm missing heaps of the stuff I do but it will come to me lol.
