  1. I would change my vote to that actually. There may be circumstances that it's impossible for the breeder to actually take in a dog, but I would hope they would help somehow.
  2. Ohhh I completely forgot something I have always wanted. A Dalmatian called Spencer
  3. Off topic but my boss and his wife are Egyptian and have a daughter named that but spelt "Seraphina", it sounds absolutely beautiful in their accents. Your hubby's crazy
  4. OT - what a great website! Especially as it has two lovely Fields. :D I love that website too. I've embarrassingly spent hours reading every single page of it at ridiculous hours of the morning. The vintage dog photo Facebook page is good too :)
  5. Are the individual hairs tipped with dark colour? (the puppy looks that way) Sable with tan and white?
  6. I have a name picked for a big boofy dog. It would only suit a boy with a huge head, I have many future breeds in mind a few might suit it If I ever end up with a male Newfie I think that dog will take it.
  7. I've never seen a dane run flat out, a sight to behold I'm sure! It was the long scrub actually He saw the kangaroos but they didn't matter too much, the grass on the other hand… stupid dog I didn't know there was a trail out at San Isidore. I saw some photos of lovely trails up at Tumut, but I think they are in the national park so no doggies.
  8. nah its at Pomingalarna Lisa, you'll have to take Nova there, it was really great! It was very quiet and lots of different trails to follow. There are Kangaroos there, just something to be aware of, Nova's probably ok with Kangas though? Although Willans Hill is really good too, have you taken Nova there before? I have taken Del down the main street in her Jammies, but it was around 6am, so doesn't really count :) I went out there today for the first time! Lets just say Nova went crazy and we weren't there for very long. It will be long lead only out there for a while
  9. Aww Digby! Love the last yogurt photo too! Is that outings photo up Willians Hill? Also did you take Delta in her PJs down the main street?
  10. Yes - and I can't recall where I heard this but there also seems to be an in utero effect (as well as genetics) on inner ear pigmentation. Parents should be tested before breeding and puppies should be tested at 6-8 weeks. Indiscriminate breeding may well be a large part of the problem. Yes I've heard this too.
  11. There needs to be pigment in the right places inside the ear to hear, hence why white can be such a problem.
  12. So the deafness which occurs in ACD's is the same as what occurs in Dalmatians. The deafness that occurs in Koolies is different, but still related to white. Koolies being a merle breed, can be deaf through too much white and being a double merle. I think the reason why we seem to see so many deaf Koolies and ACDs compared to other breeds is that they are bred pretty unscrupulously on farms and back yards. They aren't worrying about BAER testing their stock and in regards to merles, probably don't know the problems that can occur with breeding merle to merle or producing excessive white.
  13. Its a white related deafness. ACD puppies are born white apart from any solid patches, their roaning colour develops in as they age. I believe it's the same genes as dalmatian's spots.
  14. Labadore your boy looks gorgeous, handsome face I don't have any photos on this computer of my boy before he got sick, but in peak condition he had a similar body type. The closest I have of him being 'healthy" is this photo. Keep in mind he had muscle wastage in the head from previous IBD flare ups and consequent drugs, and muscle wastage in the hind from DM He was 10 in this, about 5 months before he passed.
  15. Just in regards to the bolded part. I remember reading a blog about labradors being used for actual hunting (not trials), and that to them this was not a desired trait. They preferred the dogs to think about the easiest way to get to the game, so the dog could preserve energy. It had a video demonstrating their dogs going for game with a fence and gate of differing heights in the road (some panels missing, some partly collapsed). Each dog in their pack had a go and you could see them look for the lowest place to go through rather than go in a straight line. I found it really interesting, I might try and find that video again, because now I wonder if there is another conformation difference in labs bred for trialing and labs bred for true hunting.
  16. I think when this is your 9th post on a new forum, it's time to maybe take a step back and a deep breath. DOL is one of those forums that really benefits from some lurking from its new members. Your opinions so far have been pretty out there and sometimes not really in line with what DOL is all about. Also what on earth is a ~power breed~ and where can I get one A dog with Super Powers of course
  17. To be honest I'm not sure either I'll wash him without shampoo and see what happens
  18. Back on his normal food now, so Earthborn Holistic grain free (fish one) with a turkey neck as one meal. No vomits and no hairballs! Very happy it's not an intolerance to his food. I am adding 1tsp of the psyllium husk in to his breakfast each day and that seems to be working with the hair balls. If he keeps it all down the next week I'll start slowly adding some extras back that I normally like to give him too such as eggs, sardines and more meaty bones He's going through some minor shedding now, which is probably why the hairballs started (even with daily brushing), so hopefully when he has his first big coat drop come spring/summer the psyllium husk continues to work. I prefer not to wash my dogs too often but as so much more hair comes out with a wash I might give weekly or fortnightly rinses to him during the shedding seasons to help prevent it the hairballs. Might need to invest in some of that candula tea rinse to stop his skin from drying out! Never thought it would be a bad thing to have a dog that likes to keep himself clean!
  19. I actually found (and still finding through adolescence) this as the most rewarding part about having a puppy I tried to make sure we went somewhere public at least once a day, even if it was to the coffee shop 5 minutes away to get used to crowds and sitting nice and quietly and I enjoyed it. As well as having a nicely adjusted dog now, I actually ended up becoming really great friends with a woman that works at pet barn and the barista at the best dog friendly coffee shop Having a puppy has increased my social life, even when I would prefer to do stuff with him over attending events with humans.
  20. Kinda hard to say which breeds would be suited without any other information. Some other basics like inside or outside? How much exercise are you willing to give? How much training you are willing to do? any other activities you want to do with the dog? Do you have any personal preference on size, even a coat type?
  21. Oh these were favourite books of mine as a child RIP Spot's Dad.
  22. Oh and for this particular pup (not so much my old lab), teaching bite inhibition! People thought I had a feral cat because of all the tiny scratch like puppy teeth marks on my arms and hands for the first few weeks Don't let this innocent face fool you!
  23. A Blackboy pup is currently #10 lab on the dogzonline breed leader board too
