  1. It is easily available but discussion of its use on the forum is inappropriate. Not only because giving a dose as a volume per kg without reference to be concentration of the liquid is meaningless if not potentially extremely dangerous, but also because the use of parasiticde treatments are covered by a legislated restraint which means that the instructions applied to them on the label cannot be altered unless authorised by legislation. An exemption applies to a registered veterinary surgeon to alter the instructions for well accepted uses where an acceptable registered alternative does not exist or is not practical - using ivermectin off label to treat demodectic mange - yes, using it to save money on heartworm prevention, no. As an aside related to the commonly discussed 6 week interval, although it take several months for an adult heartworm to develop, juvenile worms can be present from as little as 52 days post infection. Yes, this is more than 42 days but it leaves only a small margin for error in dosing compared to the recommend monthly dosing. Rappie would you recommend heart worming all year round or just over the warmer months (when it start staying above the 14degrees at night)? I've had vets tell me different things, even different things in uni lectures... I lived in a cold climate with my last dog, so was told by vets then to not bother at all.
  2. I realise this should be the standard, but still it's very thoughtful of you. I think (hope) any polite person would do the same, especially if they've had shit neighbours in the past.
  3. Nova has never barked upon leaving or coming home, and I've asked my neighbours and he doesn't bark when I'm not there. Neighbours had tradies in their yard, half hanging over my fence hanging up blinds a few weeks ago. I only realised when I came home for lunch. I put Nova inside just incase for the rest of the afternoon and caught the tradie as I was leaving, I asked if Nova was barking at all. He said he hadn't heard a peep and didn't even realise I had a dog! Remember this guy was hanging over our back fence He will however bark during training or games. Our other neighbours have a young under preschool aged child so I make sure I get training in, in times that aren't around nap time, unfortunately for summer it means no training in the back yard when it's nice and cool after 7pm.
  4. I've been single since just after I got Nova (surprisingly with the nature of this thread, it's not related) no current plans to find anyone else. The two of us take up all the room on the couch anyway Nova is very much a one person dog, now moved out housemates (again not related, they graduated ) and family can get frustrated that he doesn't listen to them. I've seen my old housemate who is experienced with working dogs, tell him to sit, or go to his bed, and he glares for a few seconds then does the exact opposite, like go lay in the kitchen. I swear if he had fingers he'd be flipping them off. Doesn't help that they wouldn't let me intervene or listen to me when I tried to get them to do some basics with him so he would start listening to them. My mum is a dog person though and since she started listening to me, Nova followed suit and will now do as she says when she visits us or vice versa.
  5. I know I was a bit hesitant to post some things or offer my opinion on others as there are some very strong well established opinions here and it can feel a little overwhelming. Also the search function is fantastic so I read through a lot of old topics :) I joined a year before I posted. Agree that the search function is very useful. Lots of newbies might not need to post if they can search for the basics
  6. What if... Everyone is more content and doesn't need to ask questions? You know like when people complain when News programs only run fun stories, that's a good thing! No bad news
  7. Seren, I had a similar problem with my pup. He wouldn't want to eat unless I sat there and made him, after trying the, 10 minutes and take it away thing, he once refused to eat for over 2 days, being a baby puppy he lost weight in just that time so I gave in and mixed something delicious in like yogurt. He had always eaten turkey necks and bones fine, it was just dry. It took a while to figure out that certain food weren't agreeing with him. He was getting upset stomachs from chicken, he would have runny poops every so often and would get "hungry vomits" in the middle of the nights. He would only not vomit if I gave him a tiny bit of food before bed. When I finally switched to a food without chicken, he started eating with gusto! The runny poops and the night vomits stopped completely. I wish I had figured it out earlier. He also had itchy paws that completely stopped once I put him on a grain free diet too. I feed a mixture of dry and raw meaty bones and was tempted to go completely raw, but 1: I didn't want to muck up his growth if I got the feeding wrong, and 2: I have contact allergies with some raw meats and didn't want to have to handle them if I ran out of gloves or something. Anyway point being, is I wouldn't rule out a slight food intolerance.
  8. I guess you're not speaking for all Catholics as not all Catholics believe only humans have souls. You must be stating your personal opinion of Catholicism? I'm speaking from what the catholic church has taught me and many others. Of course not all catholics personally believe that, not all catholics only eat fish on Good Friday, but that is what is taught by many bishops, fathers, nuns and so on.
  9. There's nothing particularly liberal about Francis's reportedly saying that animals can 'go to heaven'. Much the same was also reportedly said by Pope Paul VI, who died in 1978. And it's not a Church-challenging statement.... given that there's no Church doctrine about the matter at all. Which leaves their position at 'Who knows?' And so people of that Church are perfectly free to put in their pennyworth. Including Pope Francis... it's his pennyworth. And I've done mine, too! :) Catholics believe only humans have souls, therefore only humans can go to heaven. It's going to piss a lot of people who stick to that off.
  10. yes. Correction: they seek the end of all domestic animal variants, not just pets. While peta are as crazy as they come, they aren't stupid, and that is what makes them so dangerous. For example, if you follow their premise to it's logical conclusion they should also be killing humans without discrimination. But of course they are not so foolish as to ignore the fact that humans deaths are not so easily dismissed. An irony which may or may not be lost on them. i have also found the same thing as LisaCC, the damage done to animal welfare is profound and possibly irreparable. Mention welfare and farmers and industry run a mile Oh but didn't you read one of the links above with quotes from head PETA people? They have publicly applauded people who have murdered those in the animal and science industries. They don't do it themselves, but they quite literally fund actual terrorist groups who kill people and set fire to buildings using bombs. That's where peoples donations are going.
  11. He did take his name from Saint Francis, the Patron Saint of animals
  12. I tried doing natural swinging arms and I didn't have the coordination to go around the dog, I just kept smacking him in the head
  13. I'm not sure if it's even available in safe for consumption meat in VIC but.. horse?
  14. thanks LisaCC - the only issue is with my dogs being very lucky and having a 'variety' to raw - there is not a meat we can think of that is completely novel for KK and easy to source The main ones I can think that are normally less common are venison, goat, duck, rabbit? Any luck there? If you have any local deer farms/butchers they may be able to help with pet cuts to cut down price. After having one dog with IBD and going through proteins, I've been careful to leave a few meats off limits for Nova "just in case".
  15. LP, you can do an elimination diet with raw, you just need a novel protein he hasn't had before like kangaroo. Vets will advise on the details, I've used kangaroo, rice(or potato) and a human multivitamin for a long term one. Nova has poop issues with Chicken, that would be my first thing to eliminate. When doing an elimination diet I like to get weekly weights too, some foods may seem good poop wise, but they could drop weight on them to dramatically.
  16. Thanks for the info Scootaloo, I was wondering if it was MDR1 related. It must be hard but the information is important. I'll let my vet and vet nurse friends know too. Don't beat yourself up,
  17. I love heel work too! Even my club trainers say it's the boring part but I really love training it. I stewarded at a trial this year and found some of the heel work, even in the advanced levels quite sad to watch, dogs had zero enthusiasm. It's so great to see both dogs and handlers happy to be working!
  18. I'm still training my boy but we have nice animated, enthusiastic heeling all from working with toys. Tugs and balls. No food in sight for us, but that's just what motivates my dog. We are getting the duration up now. Still with a toy reward.
  19. Oh how devastating Run free Robo you beautiful boy. He sounded like such a great Aussie Scootaloo.
  20. Nova picks his own fruit on our various fruit trees The peaches get eaten as do any berries, the mandarins and pomegranite just get taken off the tree and played with before they are ripe He loves tomatoes so much they were the treats I used over meat to get him used to grooming as a pup He does not appreciate leafy green vegetables.
  21. And that's exactly why I mention Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy.
  22. We call Gus's seawater poop 'The brown curtain' It is reminiscent of washing off a brown paint brush under a strong stream of water. Bonus points for the loud splash and sheer volume. Maybe if he didn't swim with his mouth open... So graphic
  23. Plenty of research out now stating the negatives of early desexing. If people are so convinced that their pups need to be desexed at 8 weeks for reproductive reasons they should be looking at Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy instead. I would never buy a dog desexed that young.
