Hi Samadii, Of course I say VET...... But, when my dog had a grass seed between his toes, it was very swollen etc. The vet told me to put a poultice on the wound each day to see if it would draw the seed out. We did this for a couple of weeks and he was also on antibiotics. The antibiotics took away the infection, but the grass seed travelled up his leg and he needed surgery. It ended up costing a lot, with all the x-rays, etc etc. When I was there, I was talking to the neurologist, and she said I was very lucky and that grass seeds can travel to the spine :D

What blade was you dog clipped with Brookie? She certainly looks like she has been done very, very short. I would ask for a full refund and never go back there. To get a "junior" (unless fully supervised by a senior groomer) to clip a dog is unprofessional at best.

Jemappelle Does your dog have a red rash? May be clipper burn. If it is clipper burn - do not take your dog back there. There is absolutely no reason for it. I always ask clients to stay with their dogs for the first few clips, to reassure their dog and also see how I treat the dog. I do a lot of anxious/nervous/aggressive dogs that have previously been groomed in parlours/vets. I have had clients bring me dogs that have previously been clipper burned/ nicked/cut all over.

Do You Clip Your Own Doggie?
schnauzer replied to Becky in Oz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Tramissa, I am with Poodlefan on the clippers - I would recommend Andis AGC Professional - I have clipped with Osters as well and much prefer the feel of the Andis - it is also much quieter than the Oster if your dog is noise sensitive, and doesn't tend to heat up as quickly. I also use ceramic blades which I love. You can purchase Andis new on Ebay for around $250 mark. The Lowchen clip looks so gorgeous on Min. -
If a dog comes to me for a clip badly matted, I do it for the standard price. I then show the owner how to brush the dog etc. etc. I also mention that if the dog comes back in that state again, I will have to charge a lot more because it blunts my blades and takes much more time. I have hardly ever had a repeat badly matted dog. One client I told that if the dog was ever like that again to take him elsewhere, because I couldn't bear to do a dog that would have been in so much pain with matting - his penis was completely matted over - I don't know how he could have urinated comfortably I actually offered to rehome the dog for them, if they weren't prepared to look after him. Ari, Set a standard price for the dog. If the dog is really bad, telephone the owner and tell them it will cost X$, or offer for them to take it elsewhere.

I charged $60 for a schnauzer, matted to the skin all over. the other week. Next time it will be a lot more, because I had to hear the dog cry as I very gently clipped him off and it took me over two hours. I would say for the cocker $85.00. (that will teach them to groom their dog, poor thing)

K9 I have used a DAP diffuser very successfully with a dog who was an absolute wreck during thunder storms. (anxious, shaking violently, salivating etc) The DAP was recommended by my vet. When I put the DAP on, he now actually sleeps through storms.

Sporting Cut For Maltese - Any Ideas?
schnauzer replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi MBP, I would go for a lamb cut all over, then the legs don't look so spindly. You could always have a schnauzer cut -
I Have A Schnauzer That Is Scared Of Her Bum!
schnauzer replied to milly01's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nekhbet I agree, vet checkup is essential. Also a good balanced diet for a growing puppy - discuss with your vet. My schnauzers eat mainly raw food, chicken necks and wings, best grade minced beef, chicken, sardines, some veges etc. I feed all bones supervised. If you don't feed her much, I would suggest there is an imbalance in the diet and your dog is hungry, therefore eating whatever she can pick up. Are you feeding tinned dog food? -
Groomers - What Scissors Do You Use?
schnauzer replied to shmoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Shmoo, Not sure where you live, but in Sydney you can either go to Petcetera at 703 Windsor Road, Vineyard or Challenge Dog Supplies at Old Pittwater Road, Brookvale - both have lots of brands and you can get the feel. I ordered my Roseline from Petcetera over the phone and they were delivered the next day! Also they usually have stalls at the shows at Erskine Park. -
I Have A Schnauzer That Is Scared Of Her Bum!

Milly01, I would definitely visit another vet and get a second opinion. If she keeps paying attention to her bottom, there is obviously something wrong. Is she desexed? Maybe in season? I would discourage her eating the cow droppings. -

I would take your pup to vet to get her checked. She may have impacted anal glands. What diet is she on and has she been clipped recently? Sometimes a bad groomer can give your dog clipper burn. -
Groomers - What Scissors Do You Use?
schnauzer replied to shmoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Shmoo, I use both Roseline and Jaguar, and my smaller scissors are Nova. Have heard that Solingen are excellent too. Colin But is the best for sharpening of blades and scissors - fantastic service! -
Lilypily, Firstly, I hope your lovely dog gets better very quickly. I have had two dogs with pancreatitis. My GSD (my heart dog) got it when he was 14, and unfortunately although everything was done to save him, he died. Meggsie, very interesting what you say re phenabarbital - my shepherd was epileptic and was also on it. I have also had a schnauzer with a mild case, and he pulled through well with meds and on a drip. Schnauzers are prone to pancreatitis and should always be fed a low fat diet. Best of luck with your little fellow - prayers for his speedy recovery.

Peibe, I tried the tape and glue when he was a baby - didn't work - now he looks like the easter bunny. -
Uncontrollable Urge To Pee. Stops On Vomit
schnauzer replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Erny, My heart breaks for you and I sit here feeling your pain with tears running down my cheeks. I followed your journey with Kal and wished every day for her to get better. I believe that the boundless love and joy a dog brings you in its lifetime outweighs our overwhelming grief at the end. As you have said it is time that slowly heals the wound. Another angel in heaven. RIP beautiful one. -
I always instruct clients on how to groom their dogs. If a dog comes to me matted, I groom the dog and then tell the client that next time the dog comes in like that it will be at least an extra $40. This stops them in their tracks and the dog never comes back matted. Happy me and happy dog.

Jodie, My thoughts and prayers are with you and Ollie today.

I use Andis 2 speed, much quieter than Osters for nervous dogs. Nicestman77 does all my blades and scissors - he does a fantastic job and is amazingly quick with the return mail!

Uncontrollable Urge To Pee. Stops On Vomit
schnauzer replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Erny and Cal, I think of you both almost every day. I battled many years of seizures with my german shepherd dog, and thanks to a wonderful vet and great meds nursed him through to the age of 14. Kal reminds me of him, he fought with a great strength and determination. Best wishes to you both. -
I would have thought needle aspiration to confirm what it is. Could possibly be foreign body/grass seed that has now migrated. Grass seeds will often abcess, but if not can migrate. Hope it disappears for you.

Nessie Just Failed Intermediate Again
schnauzer replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
"Nessie was one of the puppy farm dogs wasn't she? That, of course, is going to have a lot to do with it." Hi BMP, Wow, I cannot believe that your pf dog is at this level already and you only got her last September. I think you are doing fantastic. My pf girl has taken sooooooo long to trust and become more confident (mind you, she was extremely traumatised). I have had her for 14 months. She will sit on command, drop etc. but also gets worried in a class situation and thinks she will be kicked by all the legs and dogs around her. Time and patience will win through. I personally wouldn't give my dog any drugs (unless medically necessary). Just plenty of praise and rewards. One of my other dogs failed Grade 3 to 4 twice before being successful - it is disappointing at the time, but you just have to persevere. Best of luck. -
My heart breaks for your loss. I have been there quite a few times now, and I know the heartache and grief. The love Wags gave you in his short lifetime will stay in your heart forever. I hope your son has recovered well. RIP Wags.

My heart breaks for you. Having my dogs ashes in my house makes me feel at peace knowing they are all with me. RIP Beautiful boy.
