Recently Blind Spaniel - Help Appreciated
schnauzer replied to curns's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Curns, Fantastic advice from both Puggles and Showdog. One of my schnauzers is also totally blind and has been for a about a year now. It was very difficult for me at first because I felt so sorry for him. I always go on the same walks with my three dogs, so that he knows the scents and is happy to trot along. I have taught him various commands such as "down' for stairs or "up" and "careful" if he is getting too close to something that he could bump into. He seems very happy and walks in and out of the dog door comfortably. My other male seems to watch out for him and touches his nose and then leads him - just gorgeous. A support group is a great idea. -
Indolent Ulcer On The Cornea

Hi Westielover, Is your vet an eye specialist? If not then I would see the specialist first and go from there. Good luck. -
Indolent Ulcer On The Cornea

Hi Westielover, You need to be referred. There is a fantastic opthamologist at North Ryde, whom I took my dog to when he went blind. Would highly recommend him - Dr. Mark Billson. I hope he's ok. -
Peibe, I am so sorry for your family. RIP little Chevy.

I train all adult dogs as I would a baby puppy and it has always been successful. If you take her outside, say your command "wee wee" or whatever and wait until she does wee and then reward her. My bitch always will go the minute she has finished eating. Make sure she has a dog door or open door so there are no "mistakes" in the house. I would also get up during the night and take her out (like a baby puppy) until she has established a routine. Why is she sleeping in a bathroom? She should be sleeping where she will always sleep, on a comfortable bed out of the cold and draughts.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about a new puppy. Good luck and just follow your groomers lines. Remember if you make a mistake the hair will grow back. -
Best Clippers For Home Grooming My Mini Schnauzer?
schnauzer replied to kiki's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ones ability to clip is related to a number of factors as some people will pick up the skill naturally and have confidence to tackle new tasks. The risk of cutting an animal is not great if you use the correct blades and seek advice. We all have to start somewhere. I encourage Kiki to have a go as it sounds if she has researched the task and is asking for advice on DOL. I am also a groomer and would still advise Kiki to get some professional help to start off -maybe watch the groomer for a few times, and pick up some professional hints before attempting her own dog. and while some pick up the skill naturally, some also fail and i have seen some of the worst that owners have done to their own dogs. The risk of cutting a dog is greatly improved when the person handling the tools doesn't know how to use them properly. being a groomer is a TRAINED profession. it takes years of skill and understanding of a dogs coat. its not something a pet owner can learn by watching a DVD. Kiki is welcome to have a go. but seek the expertise of a professional in real life. ask to be shown how to handle the clippers and handle the dog in real life. Hi Shmoo, Totally agree. I am a schnauzer groomer only - some of my clients occasionally clip their own dogs, but always bring them to me for the lines to follow, furnishings, nails and ears. Kiki, if you do your own dog, keep feeling your blade and make sure it does not get hot as you can give the dog clipper burn. Good luck. -

Great advice shmoo. ;) I use Andis AGC 2 speed, which is very quiet. I have used other brands but prefer Andis. -
Peibe, I am so sorry..... Another angel waiting at the bridge. I am sure she had a wonderful life with you and was truly blessed to be part of your family even for a short time. RIP Elle

I recently had a client whose dog had supposedly been given a schnauzer cut. OMG! The dogs back had been clipped only and its furnishings hacked off and its head looked like a lion completely uncut. Needless to say, the client was happy when he walked out looking like a real schnauzer. Another client used to ask for "eyebrows like pom poms"

Terrorbull, If it makes you feel any better - one of mine was at the vet three times before he was six months old with obstructions. One from eating my glasses and chewing and swallowing the lenses :D , the second for eating a freezer bag that I dropped in the kitchen, he ate it before I could pick it up ;) and the next time for eating all the stuffing out of a toy including the squeaker. Some dogs will just eat anything. Hope he recovers quickly.

Another angel in heaven. A beautiful tribute to a very special princess. RIP Loki

I can feel your pain and grief. When my heart dog (GSD) died, eleven years ago, I felt exactly the same way. My other dog gave me much love and consolation, but I was torn apart by the grief. My thoughts and very best wishes are with you.

Sick Of Unprofessional Groomers
schnauzer replied to border14's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Since the dog was not matted, there was no reason for him to be clipped in that area. I would find another groomer. -

Most Groomers do LISTEN. I try very hard to do what the customer wants, within reason. Nadia I will always listen to my client. But if a dog is matted to the skin, I refuse to pull at its matts, and will clip it right back, so that the dog is comfortable. Perhaps the area the groomer clipped was badly matted? Much better to have a bald patch than your dog tortured. -
Hi jbbb, Years ago, one of my schnauzers had a severe allergic reaction to Frontline, breaking out in the lumps and welts all over his body. He received immediate vet treatment, but due to complications and every attempt to save him at a specialist centre, he died. :D On my dogs I now use Advantage, and Sentinel Spectrum. I also routinely flea bomb my house with Mortein flea bombs. I also keep all bedding etc washed regularly. I do not have carpet in my house - so not sure about flea bombing with carpets. ETA I never see fleas on my dogs or in the house.

Hi Staffyluv, I have been done this road a few times now and I know just what a hard time it is for you and your family. I would definitely get an ultrasound done and then you will know what you are dealing with. We did an ultrasound with one of mine who had cancer (at the bridge now), and it showed cancer in his lungs and liver. My vet (an oncologist) told me to just give him quality of life and I would know when the time was right. He told me that when he started vomitting after each meal, it would be his time. I knew when it was the right time. I wish you the very best of luck with Ollie. He is in my thoughts and prayers.

What Brand Of Scissors To Buy?
schnauzer replied to BittyMooPeeb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poodlefan Jaguar and Roseline for me too. I also have a smaller pair of Nova 5 Star which I love and I do around eyes and ears with these. -
If any of my schnauzers don't eat ONE meal, I know they are unwell. I keep a careful eye on them and off to the vet we go if they don't eat the second meal. Have you taken your dogs temperature? There are a lot of gastro bugs around at the moment - two of mine have had it and it can be easily passed onto other dogs. I hope your little one is OK.
