Giraffez, I would not feed smoked bones to your puppy. If he eats it too quickly and gulps it, it may cause intestinal problems. Have you given him any chicken necks/wings (raw)?

Sorry to hear that. But wouldn't there be a chance that advantage will have an allergic reaction aswell? No, defintely not hair. I have bite marks all over my body. The bite marks have me baffled. Maybe something in your yard when taking Teddy out to toilet?

I was thinking if the pup had been just groomed and you have been holding him, maybe you all have some very fine hair on you from him being clipped, and that is what is making you itch? Ten years ago one of my schnauzers had a very serious allergic reaction to Frontline and due to complications died.

Stacks of breeds leave home clipped & groomed All our minis go to there new homes fully groomed so the dog has a chance to settle & there first groom has been done by someone they trust & of course they shouldnt go to a salon until vaccinated. It could be fleas although personally i would avoid frontline like the plague. To many dogs react to it. Mini are highly allergic to fleas so if it is fleas there will be bit marks on the dog especially in the groin area as that where fleas like to hang & the dogs will chew/lick there. Nope no markings at all. How do I know if my pup is reacting to frontline. I still have 1 dosage left from my previous dog. Both of my previous dogs did not react to it and frontline worked really well with them. Was the puppy washed before or after the clip? I would definitely not use Frontline on a puppy. Like Clyde and Rysup I would use Advantage.

HI Schnauzer. How many inches for the scissors should I be looking at? Are there any other grooming supplies shops besides the one in Brookvale you can recommend? I notice they only open during the week and close at 4pm which can be difficult to get to. Personally I use Jaguar 7 and smaller wahl scissors. It depends on what suits you and the feel of the scissors. You should be able to buy Andis clippers at a good pet store but prices can vary quite a lot, so shop around. I have bought scissors/show trolley from Petcetera who also deliver by courier.

Hi Giraffez, I would recommend getting either the breeder or a professional groomer to do the first few clips and then you can follow their lines. They can teach your puppy to "stand and stay" on the table. A good first grooming experience is very important for the puppy. I use Andis AGC professional 2 speed and love them. They are very quiet and not heavy. Good idea to go and test out the clippers and the feel of scissors rather than buy on the net. Challenge Dog Supplies at Brookvale will have everything you need. I use Jaguar and Wahl scissors, and Roseline thinning shears. You will also need a sturdy grooming table with rubber matting so that the puppy does not slip. I use 7F (in winter) and 10 blades with ceramic topcutters.

Hi Erny, My boy did something similar several weeks ago. He was running and suddenly on three legs. I was sure he had done his cruciate or worse. I rang my vets who advised small dose of Metacam and to see them following morning. My dog would have also collapsed under pressure on his spine. It turned out to be severe muscular spasm in his back. Three visits of trigger point therapy, some Metacam, rest, stretching and slow walking and all is resolved. Best wishes for your boy.

Thinking of you today. Such a special heart dog is always beside you. -
Thanks Schnauzer! Do I need to register? And is this schnauzer specific, would there be other breeds there? Just come along on the day - everyone is welcome. It is run by the breed club and schnauzer specific. See you there. :p

Absolutely, triple the pleasure. The only downside to having three is the vet bills.

Grooming Advice Wire Haired Dog
schnauzer replied to pearlandmooks's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Pearlandmooks, Does he need clipping or stripping? -
I have followed Lucinda's journey since the start. What a courageous, beautiful girl. Heart dogs are forever - I am so sorry for your loss. RIP Lucinda
-
Carlibud, A beautiful, magnificent boy and what a wonderful life he had with you. Your story made me cry - I lost my GSD many years ago - they are such special dogs. RIP Buddy
-
What can one say? Such a terrible, tragic loss.......... I am so very sorry for the owners. RIP beautiful dogs.

catandgrant, Please be very careful if you are keeping your baby puppy outside in this heat. Puppies/dogs can get heat stress very easily and can die quickly if dehydrated. Make sure he has plenty of water bowls in case he knocks one (or more) over.
-
Poor puppy. Why can't the puppy be brought inside with you at night - he needs company after being alone all day long. 8 weeks old is a baby, he should be getting fed during the day at this age. Maybe call your breeder and get some good advice.

I love my ceramic blades. They give a better finish and keep my blade cool for longer. They are sharpened by Nicestman who owes me a coffee and a lamington.

I really don't understand why everyone is getting so shirty about a dog sleeping outside. It is a dog !! Humans run the house not the dog. I am beginning to think joining this forum was a bad idea. I came looking for advice and all I seem to be receiving is abuse from some people. Thankyou to everyone who has given structured, helpful advice without being nasty. Everyone raises their pets in their own way and in the way which is suitable for their situation. Yes there a lot of passionate dog owners out there but please consider everyone has a different situation. LorenaMM, My post was meant to be constructive - I do not consider it abusive. My dogs certainly do not run my house - they are all very well trained, and know their place. Schnauzers are a breed that wants to be with its family and is also a clipped/stripped breed, hence IMO it is not a suitable breed to be sleeping outside. It may "be a dog" but in my opinion, dogs are family members. Good luck with your puppy.

I don't use crates for my dogs either. I toilet train them to go outside and they have the full run of the house, access via a dog door. With a new puppy I would get up once or twice at night to take them out to the toilet, until they are old enough to hold on. All my dogs (including rescues) have been easily trained this way. I believe that you start as you are going to finish. I don't quite follow your logic that the puppy will be allowed in the house when you are at home and then outside at night. I also would not rehome a dog to someone who will make it sleep outside.

Hi Andisa, thanks for clarification. Still as cheap as chips compared to Sydney prices.
-
A specialist radiographer charges $50-60 for an ultrasound? That is less than a normal vet consult in many parts of Sydney.

I feel a bit better about my vet bills since my girlfriend told me she had a $14,000 vet bill for her horse (AND he died ) : A suggestion - clip his nails yourself, it is not too hard to do. You can buy a small pair of nail clippers at the pet shop. Will save you $10 -20 which is a rip off anyway. Buy a DAP for his "thunder horrors" and turn it on. I have found that by the time you give them a Zanax/valium and it works, the storm has passed. Heartworm tablets are much cheaper online/petshop, at the vets you will pay premium price. ;) That is so horrible that your friends horse cost so much and still died Zedley's nails are really tough and the vet needs two hands to close the clippers over his nails. I have broken a couple of expensive ones and I try to use the dremel on him before they get too long. This dog walks on pavements for at least 30 mins each day, most of my yard is paved also. His nails grow at a rate of knots (like every 6 weeks they have gone from a clipped 1/2 inch to a full 1 inch long ) I've tried the DAP and it has no effect on the worry wort I usually buy his meds over the net, but I have not had h/w stuff for some years and needed to see what this dog needs. In the future I will be ordering over the web. Thanks for the input. Hi Loraine, Thanks for the thought for my friend - very sad that he died, a brilliant horse full of potential. I am very surprised the DAP does not work. Has the dog been kept in the room where the DAP is on? Re the nails, could you try trimming them a bit each week? I have three dogs so my vet bills are astronomical. Andisa, I wouldn't be complaining about that price. My old boy recently had an ultrasound with a specialist and it was $375.

OhMarley, What brand are you using? Does it prevent all the hair going everywhere and why does it cut shorter? Sorry for the questions!
