  1. Jed, My heart breaks for you, your family and beloved dogs. My deepest sympathy for your loss and my prayers for your speedy recovery.
  2. I am so sorry about your daughter's dog. Absolutely disgusting behaviour by the vet practice. I would be speaking to the owners of the practice. Just out of interest, are they owned by a company or the vets?
  3. Stress will induce this type of behaviour. Have you had any workmen in the house, renovations, new neighbours, visitors etc? I would start toilet training over again, like a baby puppy. I don't crate, but would allow him a basket and cordoned off area to sleep in. My rescue pf girl started eating her poo again last week. She has not done this since the first few weeks she was rescued. I realised it is the stress of having new neighbours/voices in the yard next door.
  4. Interesting thread. I own two small dogs. I don't use off leash parks - there are too many naive dog owners that use them and they can be dangerous. I walk past one every day on the ocean walk, and often large dogs will bound up to my two, and the owner says "he's friendly", well guess what? one of my dogs isn't - he can be DA as my three were attacked whilst on lead by an off leash dog last year. If I had not been as dog savvy as I am, the dog would have killed my old blind boy, as he had him by the throat. I broke my thumb in the process of grabbing him by the scruff and getting him off my dog. There is nothing more arrogant and dangerous than a dog owner that does not have effective recall, and allows their dog to bound up to others and jump all over them.
  5. Hi Anne, You know your own dog and you will always know when enough is enough. My GSD had a form of epilepsy and was well medicated. He had a wonderful quality of life, was walked every day, went to the beach etc. and was absolutely treasured. When he did seize it was awful, but my vet told me that he did not realise what was happening and afterwards he would be quite but then back to a normal dog. He was carefully monitored by my wonderful vets. He lived until he was 14 years and IMO had a wonderful life. I always thought he would die from a seizure and he eventually died from a mild dose of pancreatitis - go figure.
  6. I doubt an older schnauzer will tolerate a working breed jumping all over it. You would have to be very cautious rehoming such a young exhuberant dog with an older dog. "Trying anything it takes" is not responsible rehoming. You should be looking at what is going to be the best forever home for him - rehoming with an old dog that you quoted is "scared" - is definitely not on. Perhaps look to a working home for the kelpie.
  7. Feistylady, I am so very sorry for your loss. You gave him the kindest gift of all - forever in your heart. RIP Matey
  8. Hi Monah I would have to strongly disagree with this statement. Like any dog a schnauzer will bark only if untrained. They are not yappy and I have never owned one that would snap either. I would not recommend a Standard for a family with toddlers, as standards can be quite boisterous and would be likely to knock over a little one. A mini is an ideal family pet, as long as they are happy to have the dog professionally groomed every 6 weeks and brush a few times a week as well. They are active, often the clown, adoring of their owners, good guard dogs, and easily trained.
  9. Where was your dog bred? Some dogs bred in puppy farms will present like this. My rescue bitch (rescued at 4 yrs) showed extreme OCD behaviours including spinning, circling, fear biting etc. I retrained her without using drugs, mainly by obedience training, changing her focus when her mind goes into the behaviour and distraction. She will only now spin when exceptionally stressed in a thunderstorm, but improves all the time. The improvement was slow initially but she is now a relatively normal dog. Have you tried a DAP for your dog? Also has your dog had a neurological exam?
  10. Hi fbaudry Why is the dog on Clomicalm? Can you describe his/her behaviours and why the dose keeps being increased.
  11. It is starting to get cold and if he is clipped short he may be feeling it. Put a nice warm rug up there for him to snuggle into - or buy him a doggiejama and let him work out where he wants to sleep. His basket may be in a draft.
  12. It is difficult to walk your dogs in the east subs without seeing other dogs. By the way, the schnauzer was not one of mine. ;) I would suggest walking in Centennial Park but on the footpath or inside Grand Drive where all dogs must be leashed. I have known of several bad dog attacks including the death of a puppy in Queens Park in the past year or so. I rarely do dog parks, I just don't trust other owners to be responsible.
  13. You should have reported her to the Rangers Office in the park. Go and make a complaint tomorrow (at the rear of the restaurant). No-one should be walking a "pack" off lead. If she is a dog walker that is illegal - as I think the law is 1 dog walker per two dogs? If your puppy has any bite wounds it should be taken to a vet as they can get infected easily.
  14. We have rescued several lots of puppy farm dogs. Some are so severely traumatised they bear their scars forever. Most can be rehabilitated with the right experienced carers, but it can be a long process, and some dogs are not for the faint hearted. Having said that, the rewards in seeing progress with these dogs is phenomenal. My own bitch will still spin when very stressed by a storm, five years after rescue. Yes I know but what is so upsetting is that its now being made legitimate via people you wouldnt expect to support it and portraying that Banksia park kennel as something to be held up as doing the right thing by dogs.Even uni lecturers are touting a commercial puppy farmer as an expert on breeding dogs and allow her 45 mins in a seminar on building better dogs! Steve Austin saying they only get dogs from registered breeders and people registered as breeding businesses is supposed to make it O.K? Not for me. I totally agree with you Steve. The University lecturer is obviously delusional and has never been to a puppy farm. Just a suggestion, but perhaps the MDBA could take a strong stance against these practices and voice your concerns to the relevant bodies, councils, PIAA, and Canine councils regarding puppy farmers who are actually "registered breeders" (if in fact they are).

  16. Agree, schmauzer, & it's why I agree with the folk who want to contact the 7-30 Report so a program can be done showing what the good registered breeders do. And how people can go to them for pets. I'm still meeting piles of people who honestly think only show people can adopt puppies/dogs from the show people (which is what they call the registered breeders). We went to a public event at the weekend. And, as usual our 2 tibbies got so much attention from people, for their good looks & for their wonderful temperaments/socialisation. As always, I tell people that's how they came from their good registered breeder. Had nothing to do with me! You're right. Every single person asked, but how do you find breeders of dogs like that? They have no idea where to start. All we need to do is to get Westfield on our side and Pfffttt - there goes the Pet shops.
  17. Mita, Unfortunately, the average public person does not have the knowledge to go to the Canine Council/registered breeders. The average person sees the cute puppy in the window at the pet shop at the mall, the kids get to cuddle it and BINGO they have a new dog. They haven't given any consideration that this cute bundle of fluff will be with them for the next 12-15 years. And also that this cute puppy's mother is still in a cage at the puppy farm breeding the next lot for the pet shop.
  18. As for the PIAA - from their website: "Formed in 1979 (as PIJAC) the Pet Industry Association is owned and run by its members, who believe in professionalism and high standards. The Mission of the Pet Industry Association is; through education, excellence, enterprise and integrity; to represent members and lead the pet industry." Maybe the members of PIAA should come and meet some of the dogs we have rescued from puppy farms/ex pet shop purchases. Pet shops are supplied by puppy famers - not registered breeders. Steve Austin needs to rethink his ethics.
  19. Mark Bilson, Opthamologist at SASH has been great with my dogs and is a really nice guy - I would highly recommend him.
  20. feistylady, My boy (now at the bridge) had two major surgeries for multiple mast cell cancers when he was about 7 and 9 yrs. The last surgery they used chemo to shrink the tumour down which was successful (he was not at all ill on the treatment) and then removed it with clear margins. He lived a great life until 13 yrs when I put him to sleep because his quality of life had diminished. Good luck with the surgery.
  21. Linda Vogelnest from Sydney Uni is excellent - she also works out of Camden Uni. Vet hospital.
  22. Congratulations Anna. So well deserved. ;)
  23. I am so very sorry schnauzer_mum. Another angel in heaven. RIP little Ralphie.
  24. K9Angel, I hope your little one makes it. Is there a parvo outbreak at BP or is he the only dog affected that is known? Rescuers should be made aware, particularly to take extra care quarantining dogs and also if travelling any dogs on transport.
  25. Get somehelp if you can and jump the fence and take the dog to a vet immediately. If you are not game - call a ranger/police/rspca. I stopped for a supposedly left for "dead" dog on the road, and she was still alive :D and then rushed her to a vet. If the dog is still breathing, move very carefully in case it attempts to bite - try to stretcher onto a towel or flat board to carry if possible in case of broken bones.
