Sparty replied to fidelis Border Collies's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports

Breeds For Herding
Sparty replied to fidelis Border Collies's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
aarrggghhhh this is frustrating, but one thing should be said the "fun day" was a beginners herding, well supervised and people paid serious money for a day learning if their dogs had any instinct and if it was something to pursue. after all we all have to start somewhere -
Breeds For Herding
Sparty replied to fidelis Border Collies's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It is sad that people WITH herding breeds AND VCA membership AND who are interested in herding and have put in training might be put off by this as it is struggling, the last event i went to had 2 dogs doing instinct test and there is not a huge amount of events on offer in Victoria some one was being pointed out for trying to learn herding and lessen the bite in her dog (an ACDX i think) what is wrong with that? she is training and trying to improve her control under supervision. it is a great experience and bonding thing to do with your dog, it wont be some peoples cup of tea but why shouldnt they try it? -
yup the club is running both on the same day so the canteen and facility doesnt have to be set up and run seperate days and keeps costs down a bit so if you have a VCA membership and have a herding breed or recognisable X of a herding breed or a Utility dog with herding background u can enter

Hi thought i would start a new topic as this was getting lost in the beginners herding one. there is a instinct and herding test set for the friday & Saturday after christmas, Lovely Venue, they have the champ show on right next door for sticky beaks and camera buffs. a great day and a lot of fun, if you wish to go in please pm me and i can give you the coordinators email (by her permission) for you to advise you wish to come and run your dog, $10, there should be 2 judges so the possibility of getting your first stage of your herding career if you advise now you can go in the catalogue so should get preferance to those just turrning up on the day! LOL if David can get my Kira interested in sheep, she has been known to take a nap while in the pen!!! he is really helpful and knows how best to get a dog off and running
-
YB i think the stop/drop is also to take the pressure off the sheep when the sheep are moving nicely i can put Bodie in a stop to calm things down and slow the sheep, also i dont want the sheep up my bum while im trying to open the gate so putting a stop in is handy in that instance Also once you have got the sheep you dont want the dog trying to get in balance with you as you try to shut the gate and scaring them out again
-
lol just dont expect the drop/stop to work instantly on sheep it is so new and overwhelming it is hard for them to concentrate YB's Conner is very very good with obedience and has been working in preydrive before. just dont expect too much right away enjoy the day without expectations
-
beginners day or lancefield day? wagsalot?
-
I cant get off work or i would go both days
-
well your dog has to show interest in the sheep wanting to work them, it must obey you on a stop and a recall (doesnt have to be immediate) they do this on a long lead, then if the judge doesnt think your dog will eat the sheep (trying to picture conner with a sheep in his mouth ) you do the same off lead, it took all of 3 minutes for both dogs both times in August.
-
well i spoke to the lady from lancefield, they are debating on if they will run both days so if ANYONE is serious about going (on the saturday!!!!!!) pm me and i can give you her email (with her permission) to signify your interest, they will have 2 judges there so there is the possibility of getting 2 passes on the day, $10 is the fee if you advise you will attend before hand you should get preferance to those just entering on the day as you would be in the catalogue
-
well it is something to think about ,instinct test i wouldnt think Conner would have any problems with, then you could concentrate on herding test (getting them to kinda go where u want them LOL) for southern, i hope to do Bodie's 2nd herding test ... or (dreaming) pretrial hehehe
-
I went sunday week ago about 7.30am before it got stinking hot 6am start from home tho i might try and get there again before chrissy for a few hours if i can talk dave into it, lol timed right i can get 3 hours in and be back in time to make hubby breakfast in bed LOL, well maybe brunch and still have most of the day to spend with him
-
After going to the Bernard Arends seminar i switched to LEFT and RIGHT lol a hell of a lot easier to remember i dont have to draw H & B on the back of my hands to remember HERE & BEHIND i use BACK to get him to back off and STEADY to come in slow, IN to well, come in hehehe and GET IN to get in between the sheep and the fence OUT to get some more distance tho Bernard said if he is going right another RIGHT should push him out further (once he is trained better LOL) but for now use it when he is cutting in too much or threatening to cross me Looking forward to seeing you Barb!! they will have herding test there so Kirra could start on her next leg? I hope u can come to lancefield YB, would love to see Conner the mighty at work
-
I think it is $10 @ run for instinct, and $20 for herding test hope a few more DOL'ers come take some bikkies & cheese and stuff nice shady trees there
-
it will depend on the dog obviously, lol dont want to say too much or something that could be taken in a disparaging way, but i felt much better about going into the instinct test after watching some of the other dogs in started and even intermediate ..... Besides if you never try you will never know it is pretty easy to find Hopenfox bendigo to lancefield the road you come in on takes you right past the grounds (on the right)
-
lol Bodie will be up for it ... me however i can use all the luck u want to send  where is the pretrial in march?
-
Dunno i think it was just instinct and herding test, i hate it when they split them up, like southerns pretrial & above i think in october  i had to wait until end december there are not so many trials held anyway then they do that *sigh*
-
Yup Fox is a huge kelpie!!!! im trying to work an argument for having sheep at home LOL problem is then we would have to get decent fences  So anyone enthused enough to come to the herding instinct trial at lancefield?? we could have a DOL meet there and watch the entertainment 31/12/05, Bodie is trying for his herding test, some moral support would be great And it is enter on the day if you feel brave enough!! LOL my sister says he looks evil in this pic....
-
Now guys remember to take your cameras!!!!! for those o us who cant come!!! remember u can watch thru a view finder just as well!!! it gets so interesting you can forget about taking pics some times have a great day u guys
-
Bodie has a lovely floaty trot when he is cruising around looking for someone to play with but not when he is working, but then i have never been to see show border collies so i dont know if it is the same gait. i call it his "carefree look at me" gait LOL he gets lots of compliments when he does it tho the little show off!

Best Sheep For Training
Sparty replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
LOL David wasnt kidding about the dorset's sticking together i couldnt get through them!!! -
u guys are going to have a great time!!! i went today (6am departure almost killed me after flyball yesterday!!!) Bodie hadnt forgotten a thing, lol and i had retained most of my memory for herding, i think it is more training me .. im half expecting a pat on the head from Bodie as if to say you are getting there LOL for those who worry about getting lost .... Girly directions if you go to the end of Keilor park drive u will see the sign below .. turn left at that round about and then take the first left (about 150 meters after) look out for low flying planes!!! VERY TWISTY/WINDY road take your time!! after you go over the little bridge and up the hill stay straight!!! later when you come to a T-intersection of sorts (not on Davids map! :D ) there is a slow down rough surface sign there at the moment turn right (other way is dead end anyway) go straight towards the control tower to the end of the road there is a left turn right at the end , a 2 story brown brick house some kennel/cattery the road right after that is the one you follow, a couple of no option turns after that and you are there first house i think but u will see the kennels
