Sorry to hear about your problem. I think you need to find out why you have a problem. Dogs don't just start aggroing other dogs and biting people for no reason. Perhaps the dog has a medical problem? I don't think a brain tumor would show in blood work? Might be physically sore - rheumatism, arthritis, sprains, strains? Crook teeth? Crook ears? Go through all those, plus anything else you can think of, and rule them out. Dog may be getting a bit old, and feeling that, and wanting to keep the other dogs down now, as he may not be able to do it in future. I am not sure how you work this out -- by observation, but perhaps you can't tell. ?? Look at when the problem first appeared, and what changed in the dogs life? Was that when the fosters came? After the fosters came? Was there a problem with a particular foster? Or is it simply the coming and going? Dislikes the attention you are giving to them, and the fact that he is losing attention. Change in your habits, different people around, coming or going? A dog which has grown up with a dog or a couple of dogs may find fosters constantly coming and going in his middle/older years unacceptable, and he is telling you that he is seriously p$%$ed off with the situation. And yes, I would separate him from the others, so there can be no repeats. I would also ease up on the fosters to see what happened. I would also be wondering whether a dog which had a go at me had any future. But I would exhaust any other avenues first. And I'd probably try another behaviourist - there is a better answer than "dunno"

Yeay, I'd just LOVE to see a photo. Thanks for the pm, Rainy. I don't have a bed - or a house - and I am not well enough to live independently. Probably will happen later this year, so I can't even have the quilt yet -- so a photo would be marvellous. Put is on the forum so everyone can admire. I think it is wonderful for all of you to have done that. And it will be a reminder of the goodness of the dol community. Not that I need one. Youse is champions!!

sorry JB, edited my post and added some information on the ANKC and Fair Trading while you were posting. I forgot to put it in the original. ANKC basically can't do anything unless the dogs are registered with them
-
Thank you Will do some more research Sorry, Bartok, ran off at the mouth and added more after you had posted!! My apologies, but I guess it didn't matter much. But, please, do report. Don't worry if it appears nothing happens. Grubs who cross breed for money while hiding behind CC registration are giving the finger to the real breeders of this country, and anything anyone can do to stop them is a bonus!! Report and be damned!!
-
If the breeding dogs are registered, it is against the ANKC ethics. I think you should report the person, with a description of what is happening with name address, and if you know it, kennel prefix, to the state CC. If you are not sure how to contact the CC, www.ankc.com.au will bring up the AnkC site, and you can pick up the state CCs addresses, phone nos and email addresses from there. If unethical behaviours such as this are reported the CCs get an idea about some breeders, and then, if any regulations are breached, they will take immediate action because they have already received notice of the behavior of the breeder. And the CCs do and will act against shonky behaviour. I'd also like to point out that the ANCK can do nothing about breeders breeding cross breds with unregistered dogs, as they can do nothing about breeders breeding cats, llamas, al pacas, fish or horses. They only area where they are able to take a stand is in the area of purebred dogs which are pedigreed with the ANKC. To do anything about cross bred unregistered dogs is taking liberties with the Fair Trading Act. Which is why these people should be reported to the state CC - nothing may be able to be done about it, but the CC then has a warning flag on that breeder. And breeders who are flagged are watched. And I certainly wouldn't be purchasing from anyone who is also breeding x breds. That speaks volumes about their ethos and interest in purebred dogs!! There are breeders and breeders.

Pleased they are all ok, BB. Lots of vets recommend putting pregnant bitches on puppy kibble, and I cannot think why the Sandoz would not have worked with the kibble? Should not have made any difference, surely? If she wasn't eating it, though, it wouldn't have. I squirt 5ml down my girls' throats so I knew they got it, although a couple quite liked it. Troy and Sandoz are exactly the same ingredients, last time I looked - about 12 months ago. The only difference is the bottle and the price Some years ago, I had a bitch develop shocking eclampsia when the pups were 3 weeks. She was on calcium - Sandoz - only after whelping. She was in good order, a good mum. I spoke to other breeders and discovered a few other bitches also developed eclampsia whilst on Sandoz post whelping, at around the same time. My bitch was on raw diet with a lot of milk, honey and cooked rolled oats then barf when the pups were older. That is what I normally feed, usually without problems. She delivered via caesarian, and the treating vet believed that there was some unresolved problem with the caesarian, and I had never thought she was "right" after whelping, so that may have been a factor. She couldn't feed the pups after being so ill, but at 3 weeks, they were ok to be weaned. I've had eclampsia twice in the years I've been breeding. This was the second. The first time, there was powdered calcium only, and on vet advice the bitch was on that throughout pregnancy and raising the pups. Research at that time had shown that the bitches needed calcium through the pregnancy and after wards. She was eating some virulent type of dry food, and very nasty canned food, because they were supposed to be the most wonderful thing at the time for bitches with pups. *sigh*. The things we do to our dogs with the best intentions!! ;)

Looking For King Charles Spaniel Registered Breeders Sa
Jed replied to feistylady's topic in General Dog Discussion
Melcatlady, Victoria, sorry to hear about your problems. Victoria, I hope you have mentioned the Syringomyelia to the breeder of your dog. It's pretty crappy to have a dog with SM, but really, more do have accidents than have SM, but I feel for you. Where is the stat of 51? Is that the number shown on the UKCKCS site? (Too lazy to look) I believe more than that have been scanned, but a lot of those were from lines suspected of carrying SM, or dogs with symptoms. So many CKCS breeders have stopped breeding, rather than risk breeding a pup with SM. -
The regulations were changed in Qld when a member complained to the Dept of Fair Trading about the CCCQ preventing her selling pups to a pet shop. She was reported to the CCCQ for selling to a pet shop, which was against the regulations at the time. The CCCQ banned her, she went to the Dept of fair trading, and they told the CCCQ they couldn't restrict trade in that way, and if they continued to do so, the fine would be $30,000. The CCCQ then changed the rules. What hasn't changed is that registered breeders selling to pet shops are grubs, as they always were, and always will be. Decent breeders are responsible for their own pups

Happy birthday, Grumpy. ;) What a grand age you are. Sorry about the storms, maybe you can hit her up for another bit of cabanossi? The sympathy thing and all that? Sheridan, what a great testament to your love and care. May he be with you for many years to come, in grumpy good health! And - what lovely looking dogs. ;)
-
That seems to be the way it is going, Lowenheart. The pf only breed easy to sell breeds, so they can breed a few more to cover any and all extra costs, but small time hobby breeders (which is most of us) can't do that, and there is absolutely no way for legislators to differentiate between 20 dogs living in a puppy farm (and many do) and 20 well cared for dogs with a hobby breeder as Sandra so rightly points out. But any proposed legislation looks good until you begin thinking about it. I don't have a problem with legislation which curtails puppy farms, but unfortunately, the changes proposed so far will have far more impact on hobby breeders. There is already legislation and means to stop puppy farms, but governments seem more interested in bringing in more legislation than using existing legislation to control the problem. Oh dear

No, angelsun, I am not confused. And if it is a luxating patella, I would do exactly what I said. Patella luxation can be medial or lateral, and it can be caused by shallowness of the groove, a twist in the femur, or incorrect attachment of the ligament. It can also be caused by under development of the muscles etc. In the latter case, it is not true LP, although it is often diagnosed as such. It may improve as the dog grows, and if so, he can be bred with. My opinion is that if the patella is still luxating at 12 months, whatever grade, he should not be bred with. Just my opinion.
-
I would definitely run him on. I know sfa about mini poodles but in my breed they can look as if they have LP because of the way they are growing. See how he is when he is a bit older, and get a specialist vet with knowledge of the breed to see him. I would also get a chiro to have a look - jusr in case. If the LP is confirmed, I definitely wouldn't be breeding with him. desexed for sure If he was the best dog in the world, I still wouldn't. Health and soundness is so important. He might not throw it, but then again, every pup in the litter might have really bad LP and be condemned to a life of misery and pain. so sorry this has happened to you - what a disaster. Hang on to him, and cross your fingers!!

Hi Jakemon, what you mentioned is done from time to time. The person to talk to about it is the breeder of the bitch you are planning to buy,but do so with confidence, it is not totally unheard of.

It's difficult to know what to say without seeing the bitch, pups and whelping box. the general temperaturre is too high - but I'll bet the temperature in the whelping box is not 28 degrees. If the pups are cold, they will lie in a heap, if they are hot, they will spread out. I would be reluctant to do much because of this behaviour because you may make the pups too hot/too cold. Make sure they are not in a draft - get down where the whelping box is to see. Maybe the bitch is a bit stressed. You could put a texta mark inside the pup's ear to see if it is the same one all the time. I've owned a couple of bitches who will carry pups, but usually on only the first day and I have always believed it was stress. the other thing is that she may want to move them somewhere else, and you being there is stopping her. the only real way to know whether bitches have milk is to weigh the pups twice daily. Often bitches which look dry have heaps of milk. If you squeeze a teat, milk will probably come out. Oats and honey increase the milk supply, and I feed my bitches that mixed with with milk instead of a meat meal when the pups are small. the other bitch seems to have more, but perhaps she will have dribbled away all the colustrum by the time she whelps? Have you got someone more experienced who can come to see the set up, and check the girl and the pups?

Nah. Older dogs can change. Lots of reasons for it, some become more mellow, some become complete pains. sometimes they have aches and pains, poor eyesight, poor hearing etc. IN view of the damage this dog has already done, my question is why is she not put into a crate or another room when you are visiting? And if she visits you, why do they not control her - pick her up or whatever. Someone else (even your parents or outlaws) shouldn't put their dog in a situation where you want to hate it. So sorry all this has happened, especially to your old girl. edited to add - just read your second last post - I would be either having a serious discussion with your father, or telling him that if the dog attacked you again, you would (a) hit it (b) kick it into next week. As far as the herding breed - show examples do and will herd, can't believe everything you read!! I would be putting the same proposition to your father regarding this dog as well. I am not a great fan of hitting dogs, but both these problems are serious, and no one seems to care, so you need to protect what you have. I am betting a damn good cuff would stop a lot of this. Your father needs to realise that the situation is serious. Your child doesn't need the aggro, your old dog deserves better than this. Your father's small dog probably doesn't deserve you to hate her, but she does deserve to learn what unacceptable behaviour is.

I'll see if I can get someone to fossick about in my shed for spare dog bowls, brushes etc, and there will be some horse and pony headcollars and leads. I am still in vic, but if one of my friends can get it, will ensure it gets to you Stonebridge. All spare funds have gone to people whose homes were flooded, so only goods left now.
-
Could be either, but I'd go fo a brain tumour. Lots of boxers seem to develop tumours between 8 - 9. Treat him like a prince, accept that his time may not be long, prepare for the worst, whilst hoping for the best. My thoughts and good wishes are with you and him.

.....oops, sorry *slinks off with tail tucked between legs* Rainy, I am sure it will be just perfect!

Small Dog - Companion For Border Collie Male (4yrs)
Jed replied to peto2710's topic in General Dog Discussion
A cavalier would not be suitable. They were bred to be an inside dog, and are never happy to live outside. It is unfair to get one and make it unhappy it's whole life. No matter what else you do, it will not be happy outside, and will probably develop behavioural problems, dig, or escape and be run over. Sorry, not really any suggestions either, more information on your lifestyle etc would probably help -
How exciting. I haven't posted much about this, I didn't want you all to think I was giving you the hurry up. I am really looking forward to the quilt - and the memento it will be. Not of the fire, I don't need ANY reminders of that, but of the wonderful dol community pulling together to help me so much financially and emotionally. Seems a bit good to put on the bed,( not that I have a bed ) I think it will have to hang on the wall - when I get one Thanks guys, you must have all been hard at it for months

MrsD, I would imagine donations to DQ would go to DQ members regardless of breeds owned???? I would imagine any assistance to DQ members would be irrespective of which dogs or breeds they owned, or whether they are purebred or not And I would consider that the members who own associate dogs would get the same assistance as others
-
I will enter some of mine too. Some nice oldies from the past will be good.
-
Only DogsQld members and their dogs - I presume. Premiers appeal will help everyone. Red Cross also has an appeal. Ishy, you are a good person. I wonder if goods or food could be taken to the evacuation centre at the RNA, and given out?
-
Who reported him? What kind of dog, does anyone know? I was speaking to someone last night, who knew a warder at a gaol where offenders were flogged - yes a long time ago. He said that no one who was flogged offended again. It seems to me that the penalty for animal cruelty should be flogging. Magistrates should have no option - all they can do is decide the number of lashes. Yep, it's pretty nasty, but so is kicking the shit out of your dog, not seeking help, drowning it, skiting about it, and then lying through your back teeth in court. 20 of the best for this one. Adminstered by some ugly dude in a studded collar and a leather mask. Yep, I am serious. Something has to be done, nothing else works, magistrates don't see much harm in doing this obviously. And the idiot that did it? He'd be laughing his head off. And he'll get another dog when he feels like it.

DogsQld have given a bank account for donations. I have put up a thread in general about it with bank a/c details. Some DogsQld members are in a bad way\ with houses washed away, and others are helping them where possible. I think the DogsQld office might be having a few problems too, so if no one answers the phone, they are probably too busy with their water wings, try again later!!
