It is quite obvious that you have no knowledge of the history or purpose of this breed, or even seen an extension of the standard, yet are prepared to air your lack of knowledge to denigrate this breed. The peke's history goes back centuries, he was not bred to course, or race, or retrieve, or fight. He was bred to be a companion, he was only allowed to be owned by royalty, he was cared for by eunuchs and slave girls. He is supposed to look exactly as Malachy looks. And he is not overdone. He is a pekinese. The owner did give some explanation of the standard, did you not hear that? It is really sad for you that you cannot appreciate a wonderful example of a breed you don't own, and I have to wonder whether that is due to lack of eye. Most of us don't need to know anything about pekes to see that this is a very very good dog - whatever breed. Pedigree registrations declining and animal rights flourishing are certainly not helped by people such as you, who with demonstrably little knowledge are happy to criticize other breeds because you do not like them or understand them. Unfortunately that attitude hinders all breeds, including your own, which will also be for the chop when the chop comes. If you don't like purebred dogs, and you obviously don't, get some other sort of dogs. If you don't like the way some dogs are bred, or how some dogs look, put your money where your mouth is and do it better yourself. Then come back and tell us all about it. Pekes are great in the ring with their lovely roll - but not if you have a breed "behind" them.
-
The owner gives a description of Malachy's conformation about halfway through this video, if you would like to know more about pekinese. Here is some behind the scenes footage some of which is a hoot

No, there is nothing else. Only show training is at Durack now.

Contact the Cocker Spaniel Club of Victoria and ask for their puppy list. All the pups on it should be from tested parents. BB, our Silverblue has Silverblue as her kennel prefix? Am I confused?

Double Merle Rough Collies & Wesminster
Jed replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sandgrubber There is no indication whatsoever that colour matters. Probably the matings were done because a better dog was hoped for, and it appears that was successful. Why blame "colour" when you have no proof. Nothing wrong with a bit of tight inbreeding. That is how lines and types have always been set. I have a dog with 1 grandparent. Proof is in the pudding - he is old now, in good health, with healthy offspring. I have another which is the product of half brother half sister matings as far back as the pedigree goes. One of the best dogs I've owned. IMHO, COI is not as important as the judgment of knowledgable breeders, and once their right to choose is removed, purebred dogs will go down the dunny. And I don't think colour matters at all. I think the judge chose what he/she thought were the best dogs on the day. International judges usually have a lot of expertise, and I don't think 2nd rate judges would be chosen for Westminster. In fact, judging by results in the breeds I follow, judging was quite even - as I am sure it was in the collie classes. -
Sunshine Coast Woman Hurt Trying To Save Her Dog From Attack
Jed replied to Maxiewolf's topic in In The News
Poor woman, poor dog. This scenario is repeated all too often because instead of policing their leash and fence laws, councils Australia wide spend far too much time nabbing pitbulls - most of which are innocent of everything except a few smelly farts - or bringing in more over the top nanny laws which do no good whatsoever. People in similar situations to this poor woman ought to be able to sue councils for dereliction of duty, but they would not succeed because councils can point to pit bull laws and say in defence "but see, we took all the bad dogs off the street". Of course, these dogs will now be labelled "pit bulls" so the owner will be at fault, not the council. And the stupid owner is at fault. Where is his fence? Has he not realised that a dog with pup/s is a very territorial dog, which MUST be contained? Did he not realise that his dog might attack, whatever the reason? Or did he not care? Oh save me from fools and stupid councils. Poor attacking dog, simply doing what dogs do. It should have been contained. -
These laws are supposed to curb puppy farmers, or track them, or something - I cannot find out what. The relevant Government department has NFI. It is quite obvious that this is all about registered breeders, and once agan, will lead to more breeders not breeding any more. Dogsvic didn't do much about this. I thought they were having input. However it is quite possible govt didn't listen to them.

Tehre is not really any way around this. I wonder if you could write ads which said "pups expected" but obviously, the site owners have been warned they will be fined or whatever, so will not accept ads. I cannot understand that ANKC registered pups have to post the microchip number in the ads. The gov. already has a complete paper trail with the registrations of breeders. I believe that breeders can apply for and pay for a breeders' number and use that instead? But of course, we pay so much already, more payments are unpalatable. DogsVic should have stood up for themselves more. I think this will lead to many fewer litters, particularly in "rare"breeds. And I don't think it will makea shred of difference to puppy farmers.

Hi Megan NO one here has a problem with you owning an oodle cross. The issue most of us here have, and which most breeders of purebred dogs have is that the people who are breeding these crossbreds are lying to the people who buy them. They also see the dogs as the road to financial glory, and keep the poor dogs in the most appalling conditions. This video points out the lies told to buyers and also points out how little the oodle breeder who sold the woman the labradoodle knew about breeding and genetics. Usually the spin on labradoodles is that they don't shed, although there is no way of guaranteeing that, they inherit genes from each parent, whether they inherit the non shedding gene from the poodle, or the shedding gene from the labrador is in the lap of the gods. And some unfortunate owners buy dogs which have both shedding and non shedding genes - so the labrador coat, as it moults, is caught in the non-shedding poodle wool, and difficult to remove, so mats form. Then there is the myth that labradoodles don't need health testing. Both labradors and poodles can have HD, poodles can have PRA. Both hereditary. Labradoodle breeders convince buyers that those genes simply ..disappear .. with the x bred mating. Unfortunately no, so you can buy a dog which can be prone to both those problems, from untested parents for twice what a purebred poodle, or a labrador retriever would cost. What bothers me is that people who buy labradoodles buy them without full disclosure from breeders. They do believe they are buying a dog which needs no grooming, apart from maybe clipping, and which will have NO health problems. They have not found out which purebreds would also fill their requirements, and the irony of the labradoodle owner "critising" and not understanding the retriever owners point of view is really an indictment of the lack of knowledge of the labradoodle owner - despite her attitude of knowing everything. Alternatives to labradoodles are - Irish Water Spaniel, Portugese Water Dog, Spinone, Lagotto, and the underrated Poodle with a shaggy hairdo which resembles a labradoodle. A real non shedder!! My main problem with these cross bred dogs is the way the breeding dogs are kept. Piled into wire crates on top of each other in a shed - in filthy kennels, or running 4 or 5 in a dog yard with a shelter. No human contact - except for the food being thrown in and the water renewed - with absolutely no psychological interaction wth people at all. A disgusting way to treat dogs. There is never any excuse for mass cruelty of this type. Never. And the fact that governments simply don't stamp it out disgusts me. Other problem is that the breeding dogs are very poor quality, because purebred breeders will never sell quality breeding stock to oodle breeders. And they often access breeding dogs from other oodle breeders, or petshops which is no better. And as an oodle does not have a "breed standard" no one has any idea how they are supposed to look, so it doesn't really matter. Good on people who love labradoodles, and want one - as long as they do the research to ensure that this is the dog for them. Unfortunately, it is difficult to do that research with lots of dodgy information such as "non shedding" "hybrid vigour" and so on. Good luck with your dog ... everyone should be able to have the dog of choice, and love it for all its life. And no one hates oodles - just the way dogs suffer for them to be bred. Most oodles are very cute. And I do agree with you, instead of picking on the cross breds, we purebred breeders need to be proactive, so our dogs and practises are not only better, but are seen to be better. We also need to breed more dogs so people can access them as easily as labradoodles. We breeders had a giggle at the video, not a giggle at you or your dog. Hope it is a clearer to you now?

No longer any show training at Caboolture. They say they don't have enough volunteersm to instruct.

Peter Harvey was interviewed, and I heard this on the radio yesterday. He was walking his daughter's cattle dog. They walked past a picnic table, under which there were two "English Bulldogs" which rushed out to attack the ACD. Peter was between them and the ACD, and they bit and scratched at his leg to get to his dog. The area is on leash, his dog was on the leash. The bulldogs were joined together by a leash, but it was not attached to anything else. He said he had a 15 cm wound in his leg, and some other scratches and bites. He is expecting stitches and plastic surgery. Very nasty, I hope he recovers well. He said he was expecting to carry the scars for the rest of his life.

Do Boxers (dog Variety) Get Along With Other Dogs?
Jed replied to Blakbelgian's topic in General Dog Discussion
Boxers are one of the more cancer prone breeds but there is no way to screen parents in any breed for that. They do age fairly fast and Boxers over 10 are the exception rather than the rule. Many succumb to cancer before that, so I wouldn't say they are a particularly healthy breed but there a not a lot of conditions in them you can test for. White boxers are especially prone to cancer and are also very likely to be deaf and get skin cancer, so white are best avoided. The ANKC does not allow for white Boxers to be registered on any register. I do agree that a female Boxer would probably be the best option for a companion for their existing dog. If he is still full of life a puppy would be fine but if he is slowing down a bit a young adult, failed showdog might be a better option. Boxers tend to get cancers, but many do not, and live into their teens. Apart from that, as long as they come from a good kennel, there should be no health problems. Heart testing is good, but is generally done. White boxers are exactly the same as the other colours. There is no study which suggests they have more cancers or health problems than the other colours. And in my experience, they don't. Perhaps they need a little more care with the sun - but no more than any other shorthaired white breed. And if the dog is deaf, a decent breeder will have picked it up before you buy it. Deaf white boxers are born deaf, so if you want a white, check for deafness before taking it away. And if you buy a puppy, it will get on with your existing dog, and you will not be inheriting someone else's problems. There are not many boxers in rescue, but I would not recommend one for a new boxer owner. -
Will they? I hope not - surely it has to be done in writing? Why she/he is the only person with acess to the membership number. If the person is not a member they may then require it in written form. :) Thats not true. If you have ever entered a show, trial etc the secretaries have you member ship number, anyone with a pup you have bred has your membership number and numerous other cases. I have even seen membership numbers in catalogues. For goodness sake use a bit of common sence, what show secretary is going to give out a membership number ?????? Why would a complete stranger want to use your m/ship number. Anyway most times Dog Queensland will ring you back to verify the claim. I wasn't going to say that because if a smarty was trying something on they would soon be caught out would'nt they. :) No m/ship numbers are used in Qld. catalogues. Not even addresses are used in catalogues even the Royal only uses areas not addresses. They have changed my address a few times in the past 12 months over the phone. Realistically, who on earth would falsely change someone 's address? Yep, someone giving you a hard time - and how likely is that? This is a dog organisation,, not a Swiss Bank A/c. I can't believe that you have to produce x point of id to become a member. I would love to know how many people simply walk away. the main reason a lot of us don't have new bank accounts is because we couldn't be bothered with the hassle of points ---- how many more wouldn't bother to join. It is so difficult to get puppy buyers to join now.

Do Boxers (dog Variety) Get Along With Other Dogs?
Jed replied to Blakbelgian's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hearts. Cardio Myopathy. Parents need to be holter monitored 0 or ARCV tested. The latter is available in Aust. Buying from a "reputable" kennel should be sufficient. Go to the boxer thread, and ask who their dogs' breeders were. It's not a huge problem, but it is out there. -
Do Boxers (dog Variety) Get Along With Other Dogs?
Jed replied to Blakbelgian's topic in General Dog Discussion
If the boxer has been socialised, and has had contact with, and is good with other dogs, it will be delighted to have a lady boxer as a companion. They are very sociable and love other dogs. Also, boxers tend to "take care" of everyone in the family, so should accept the pup well. -
A Couple Of Fatties. Need Suggestions!
Jed replied to pebbles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Substitute finely grated carrot or pumpkin - or bran, but you will get more weight loss with the vege, and they will feel full. Minced chicken can have a high proportion of fat, depending ........... Give them a bit of veg to begin with and gradually up it. -
If you are referring to your support on this forum for the ABS, my comments were not based on assumption, but on the information you posted on the forum. Sandra777 also remarked on this, and you denied it. If you want to support something, you should be prepared to stand up for it. Here is the thread, just to prove my comments were not based on assumptions. Over the 20 pages of this thread, you continually showed support for the ABS. And that is your perogative, of course. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/214253-ccc-qlds-new-breeder-accredited-system/page__st__60__p__5122231__hl__accredited+breeder__fromsearch__1#entry5122231 And I didn't assume you are the Queen. I know you aren't :D And when you read that thread to reacquaint yourself with your opinion, you might like to check to see what my opinion of the ABS in Qld is. Not that it has anything to do with this thread. But Sandra asked, and your answer was ..... um. Maybe you don't know the meaning of the colloquialism, "the cats pjs"? Yes, I do think the Qld ABS stinks. I will never join while CCCQ registered puppy farmers are members. When the CCCQ sees fit to expel them, decent breeders may join, but most of us will not stand up with these people. What you do is up to you. No more from me, no interest in this thread thanks :)

I sincerely hope he will be ok. Those "mystery" problems are a worry. Shall cross my fingers for him. Other causes could be - I think - pancreatitis; infection
-
Yep, sure is. I thought "we" was a perogative of the Queen of England? And there is no need for legislation of this type, which will cost registered breeders more money, and cause a lot of grief, without reducing the level of suffering at all. All the government needs to do is ban the sale of pups in pet shops. They have banned other similar things, there is no reason not to do this. I would be really interested in knowing why they simply wont do that. Vested interests in PIAA, or.....................
-
Absolutely! Asking for documentary proof was instigated by people on this forum, who were apparently concerned about banned people rejoining the CC under another name, or people having a few memberships. But - I didn't think it applied to existing members. Did the CC expand their requirements? And why would they want to know NOW who you are? I think it is time the CCs - and our members - understand that this is dog breeding - not buying and selling listed companies or sheep stations. Banned members reapplying for membership have always been outed, in my experience. You can change your name, but not your appearance. And there are probably a few shonky people who want a couple of memberships. There are shonky people who are "Accredited Breeders" too. By the time all that is sorted out, the financial cost is large - and we members pay - and members - such as you - are unhappy. People should think about the long term implications of their wishes before they lobby for something.

11 Year Old Dog Suddenly Lost Balance And Can No Longer Walk
Jed replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Could be a stroke or vestibular disease. Get your relation to speak to the vet about vestibular - the symptoms are similar to stroke, and it is easy to mis-diagnose as a stroke. Vestibular usually resolves with time and care. Could be anything - good luck with him, will be thinking of him -

I have a three month old puppy that I bought from a breeder on DOL and she scratches at her face, ears and shoulders a lot. I know it is early days but does anyone know if I could get an MRI scan done and how much it would cost since I am not a breeder? Can I get it done with the KC? Unless things have changed, I don't think SM can be diagnosed at 3 months. I think it is probably too young for symptoms to appear. Check the information page on SM on the UK Cavalier Club website. If you care to pm me with the name of the breeder, and a couple of generations of pedigree, I can tell you whether there may be SM in the line. Privately

Who Makes The Final Decision On Prefixes?
Jed replied to PooMother's topic in General Dog Discussion
When I applied for my second prefix - a long time ago now, I ignored the instructions, and submitted only one prefix. I particularly wanted this prefix, and surprise, surprise, it was approved. Too easy. :D -
Who Makes The Final Decision On Prefixes?
Jed replied to PooMother's topic in General Dog Discussion
The decision regarding prefixes is made in Australia. They do check. They will not allow a prefix which is the same or very similar to an existing prefix, or which sounds the same, even if spelled differently. So, for example, if you applied for "New" and someone else already had "Gnu", it wouldn't be allowed (sorry for the terrible example, all I could think of!!) I had a prefix for 20 years. I stopped breeding for a couple of years, allowing the prefix to lapse. When I reapplied, I was not allowed to have it, as someone had applied for, and got a prefix which was similar. The appeal process is there to allow you to put your case.
