  1. Give her calcium after she whelps, as per directions on the bottle. Sandoz or Troy (same thing, Troy is cheaper) are best. Also, if she is flagging when whelping, calcium may help, and it cannot hurt. If she is stressed or schitzoid after whelping, a little extra calcium might help -- some of thos behaviours are due to lack of calcium. Not sure about the heat lead, but the temperature should be 24 degrees, and perhaps a little more if the pups are poorly. I use a heat lamp, so have no experience with leads. Good luck
  2. You will kill him if you try to make him swim. You can start a topic in the breeders' forum, and you can reply in that thread. Exactly as you can here. You will get more replies there/ The pups are called "swimmers" because they look as if they are swimming, not because they need to swim. Suggest you read the thread, it tells you everything you need to know. Good luck
  3. Leema How do you know those breaches are taking place? Are these personal experiences, or anecdotal evidence? If anecdotal, from whom (ie, sister, friend etc) and how ofte? Are you talking your own state or every state? That description is rather broad, sounds as if every registered breeder in Aust is dodgy, so some clarification wouldn't go astray
  4. A dog is not a horse. A horse does not live in the house, ride in the car, or have that special bond with his owner .... in most cases. No comparison at all.
  5. I don't think they are puppy farmers, I think they are unethical ANKC breeders who do not breed for the betterment of the breed they breed purely for colour as their priority, which makes them unethical. So what do your comments have to do with puppy farms, which are the topic of this thread? As far as I can see, you are using this thread to slash and burn registered ANKC breeders. This is supposed to be a PURE BRED forum. And as one of the huge majority of ethical ANKC breeders, I take umbridge with your comments re breeding for colour. If you don't like it, you complain to your state cc. Don't bring it into a thread about puppy farming. Don't use it as a stool to baste registered purebred breeders.
  6. yep, that about sums it up Absolutely. Without puppy sales, a lot of pet shops would be financially struggling. Particularly those franchised shops belonging to one large chain. Dog fan - could you please explain what exactly is unethical if an ANKC breeder breeds for colour and keeps the dogs in excellent conditions, as well loved pets, and why is is unethical?
  7. Could you please advise me how you ascertain a "suspect breeder" from an advertisement on this site? Thanks. Dogs bred for colour for one....just go look at how many blue SBT's there are advertised. So, that is your only criterion of a suspect breeder? dog fan That's an oxymoron. One reason they are called "puppy FARMS" is because there are numerous dogs kept in farm like conditions - as much as anyone has ever qualified the term anyhow. So, you would prefer many dogs kept on puppy farms in "legally accepted conditions" above a breeder breeding for colour? I know someone who has 300 dogs - legally licensed, and kept in "legally accepted conditons", who mostly sells to pet shops. That is about 1200 pups per annum, if they are mated once a year and 2400 if they are mated twice a year. dog fan, you believe that a puppy farm is better than someone with 3 blue SBTs who are kept in the house, well loved and cared for, with all health tests done, breeding blue pups? Yes? Mita Thanks Mita. Could be experience with "properly raised pups" - as opposed to the puppy farm dogs I have purchased and have rehomed? There is a large difference, which equates with the UQ findings.
  8. dog fan Could you please advise me how you ascertain a "suspect breeder" from an advertisement on this site? Thanks.
  9. There's a Trade Practices Act which would not allow an association such as the ANKC to enforce a ban. So it's not a case of the ANKC 'allowing' registered breeders to sell puppies in a pet shop or not. But it does not contravene that Act to have recommended guidelines on homing puppies & dogs, in terms of screening for suitability, providing follow-up advice & support etc. As many registered breeders, who provide appropriate care for their puppies & dogs, do. And, as far as I know, such a relationship between breeder & potential puppy owner is urged, ethically. So that makes it OK? Registered ANKC breeders selling to pet shops and the public are supposed to think that ANKC breeders are ethical and operating under an ethical system? I think not. No, it doesn't make it OK. But it is up to the individual breeder. Most would not sell to pet shops - in fact, the majority. And there is nothing Dogs Qld can do. Some years ago, if members were selling to pet shops, they could expect at least a holiday from their prefix, or a complete ban. Then someone complained to the Dept of Fair Trading, and DQ was told very smartly that what they had been doing was against the law, and if they did it again, they would get a $30,000 fine. So they didn't do it again. Don't beat them up for not doing anything. And back on topic - it is obvious that the PIAA can see how the wind blows with sale of pups in pet shops. I imagine an "accredited PIAA breeder" would be exactly the same as a "PIAA accredited pet shop", which is, you pay your annual fees, and bingo you are "accredited". Ask the PIAA what constitutes "accredited" and whether/how often they check on their accredited pet shops. Sale of pups and kittens should be banned in pet shops. End of story. ANKC breeders who are selling to pet shops would no longer have markets, and puppy farmer grubs would lose most of their outlets. Plus other grubs who have a litter because they couldn't be arsed to control their dogs' sexuality, or have it speyed, and phone up the pet shop to try to flog them 5 week old puppies because they couldn't be bothered any more, would get short shift. Yep, the pounds would cop the pups, but most rescuers like pups, they make $$$ out of them. And the "accidental litter" grubs probably wouldn't do it again But it will never happen, because PIAA represents too much money, and they will wave a BIG stick at the goverement, members of whom, not giving a rats about dogs really, will cave in and flap their hands, and make other legislation which will frighten the few remaining ANKC members away. And if the only way I can continue to breed dogs is to pay an annual fee to the government - on top of the fees I pay now to council and DogsQ - and to have some numpty from the government inspecting my home and dogs annually, I will walk away. As will many other breeders. Which, as far as I can see, is the intent of the legislation. The only people who come to my home are those invited, and that is how it will stay. And don't think mine is an extreme view - it is the general view. And dog fan, people can complain about legal commercial breeders because dogs are not cattle and are not psychologically designed to be kept in herds away from people. And that is what happens when the conditions are optimum. When the conditions are not optimum, dogs are not designed to be kept in stinking conditions, breeding time after time, with serious untreated health problems, in constant fear and anquish, only to be shot when they cannot make enough profit. And if you aren't happy about ANKC breeders generally, or their ethics or ethos, please do buy your puppies elsewhere. There are other registries, the MDBA which advertises here, and the AADBA - I think - which sells pet puppies, and others.
  10. Tell her she is the human, the dog is the dog. The human made the choice to take the dog, not the other way around. The human is the one who makes the calls, not the dog. It is up to the human to make an effort to bond with the dog. The human must show affection and like for the dog, and allow the dog to return that. This is done by speaking to the dog, stroking the dog, playing with the dog, grooming the dog, training the dog - even if it is just teaching the dog to shake hands whilst watching TV. I presume the dog is inside? So the dog should be in the area with the human as much as possible. The human is responsible for bonding. The dog may have a few issues about being rehomed/dumped the first time, and may be missing its first family If they throw this dog away, it will have even more problems in the future than it has now ... if it actually does have problems now. A dog is for life, not just for christmas or until the someone gets sick of it. It hasn't bonded because they haven't tried hard enough. If they didn't like the dog, they should have left it wherever they got it from, so someone who would like it could take it. If they did like it, now they have to make the effort to bond.
  11. I dunno what is wrong with youse. It IS possible to make nearly $100 in 5 years in dog breedng. Mostly. Sometimes. Youse might need to lift yez acts a bit? So if any of us are charged we can get off because we are not very good or profitable breeders? However, 350 bitches X $300 X 6 pups each (be conservative). Tralee, you will know what that comes to, it makes my eyeballs ache!!
  12. I was not, of course, referring specifically to that puppy farm, but to all puppy farms. $35,000 is very little for someone who has more than 350 breeding bitches, probably having 12 pups (at least) a year @ $300 average each. Just a drop in the bucket. Meanwhile, proper breeders would be horrified to be fined $100, because that was probably what they made out of dogs in the past 5 years So they'd have to scratch aroundto find it. Not that I am planning on being fined any time soon  As far as that puppy farm is concerned, I would have banned them from having any animals at all in the future. 3 years is not enough.
  13. What an appalling result. The law IS an ass. A bad blow in the fight against puppy farms. So sad when biosecurity and rspca did so much work on this. At least some dogs were given better lives. Steve And I hope you have reported those people to the state CC on each and every occasion? OzzieLioness Because my dear, they make much more money if they simply breed them every season, ignore any health problems, and when the bitches wont breed any more, simply shoot them, like the rubbish they have always treated them as. And if they don't test for hereditary problems, they save even more. Too bad if the pups go blind from pra. Whem they have hundeds of pups to sell, a few popping off is not a problem. And as they have cost them sfa, they probably don't care much. Cheaper to let them die than to take them to the vet - they will probably die anyhow. And if the pet shop refuses to take them any more because they were sick, too bad, there are other pet shops, sales on the side of the road, etc. And if they keep the breeding dogs chained to trees in the paddock with a bit of corrugated iron for shelter, you save heaps on buildings, maintenance, power blah blah.
  14. That is fantastic sheila, congratulations. You certainly put the work in for the result. They are stunning looking dogs, and it is wonderful to see more of them coming along.
  15. Use the products the breeder suggested. Ask the breeder what she showed the dog in. Or - see what you like best - there are coloured slips, check chains with leads - quite a few choices. Some dogs go better on one thing than another. Good luck, and have fun!!
  16. Perhaps they think it makes them more legitimate. I know very little about them, and I care less. Debra Tranter from Animals Australia (Animal Lib) is RIGHT on their case, which signals they are not all sweetness and light I doubt they are going for ANKC registration, and cobbadog is only another way of spelling labradoodle i think.
  17. As suggested, yoghurt to help with gut flora, and apple cider vinegar to balance. He could have tonsilitis, that causes bad breath. Ask the vet about that. If his teeth are manky, think about something to help them - dental sticks, greenies, pig trotters etc.
  18. Poodles are not supposed to smell. Some thoughts on what could cause the pup to smell Yeasty ears Bad breath - coming from his mouth or stomach Folds of skin under the lower jaw with "muck" caught. General all over "doggy smell". Could be caused by all over yeast Visit the vet, and if the ears are yeasty, he should be able to provide you with a remedy. If he has skin folds, wash them daily with hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball. This will keep them clean and dry. If he has an overall smell, with no discernible cause, think about feeding him yoghurt daily, about 1 teaspoon. 1/4 of a teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar on his feed could help too. Or put it in the water. Good luck, would love to know. Smells are often caused to too much oil in the coat and skin, but should not apply to poodles. Would love to know what it is.
  19. Thankyou for that. Because I have Cavs - and have never seen one with SM - I am very interested. Shocking about the vets/operation. There is a dog on facebook, who has had an operation (not sure which one) for SM, and so far, he is going well. He is in UK, so surgeons have more experience. We are all hopeful he will recover completely. I am so pleased for you that she is ok now, but you have certainly had a rough journey. And, so sad about the breeder, who must not understand that even if her dogs were MRI'd and had no syrinxes, and were classed A for breeding, they could still throw a pup with SM. At that time, a bit of moral support from the breeder would have been very helpful. I have to wonder just how much the breeder did know about SM. I have been fortunate in not having a dog with SM, or who threw it. Whilst I think perhaps that MRI screening is a good idea, I think there should be a register of dogs with SM, and their pedigrees and it should be available to all. I just think - for no good reason - that there is more to SM than syrinxes or no syrinxes. I am sorry you have had to go through all this, but I am happy for you that Anouk is pain free. Good on you for doing what needed to be done. :)
  20. Yeah, Unfortunately I did raise the issue of SM but my vet at the time (Not regular) dismissed it. I think the vets just had no cases that they had seen or they just didn't think the signs warranted any further action. It was a hard 6 months of drugs before surgery needed to be done. Even that was an episode in itself. - All Victorian owners beware of Melbourne Uni Vet Hospital in Werribee. We were treated very badly and they cared more about my money than actually focusing on the issue. *rant over* I am thankful every day that Anouk is still with me and seemingly not progressing in the disease. I hope you don't mind talking about this? May I ask what you noticed wrong with Anouk? She had symptoms of course, but what? Did you suspect SM at any stage? Did you suggest to the vet that it was SM, or did that idea come from somewhere else? If the dog is from a reputable breeder, have you told them, and have you been able to discover whether the parents/relations had SM too? Medically, what has been done to relieve the symptoms? Did it work? Obviously, I am interested in this, and I would be very grateful if you could reply.
  21. I hate coming to this forum. Despite it being a purebred forum, it doesn't matter what is written about purebred dogs, someone has to denigrate and criticise. How sad to have no appreciation for something beautiful.
  22. lovely dachs, wonderful deep keel, and very good layback of shoulder. I loved the way that Malachy kept checking with Dad that he was doing i right, and he was so confident. I would love that Irish to show, she was great and she grinned all the way around because she as so happy. All wonderfully trained dogs, all looking as if they just loved it.
  23. I have always loved that description (standard) - there is a reason for everything. Much more romantic than the pre 1987 standards for other breeds!! I also love that the slave girls produced milk for them and they ate swallows' tongues and all manner of exotic things. I guess the Eunuchs could understand and apply the standard to their breeding efforts. They did the breeding and care.
  24. Yep Jed you are confused. Silverblue is her prefix and DOL name. :) No, I know who Silverblue is. We have raised a couple of glasses together. I thought you were saying that And it read to me that you were saying that Janette and Ken Biggs had Silverblue as their kennel prefix. Which is why I made the remark All cleared up now. Cheers :)
  25. ...............and Crufts!! Westminster is always more dramatic though, so lets do all three!!
