  2. Tralee: Listen carefully to Unca Jed. If you think dogs/pups/chooks/peacocks/snails/hermit crabs are being shabbily and cruelly treated, do what you feel is best for the welfare of aforsaid animal, but do not ever ever ever, discuss it here. Now Repeat the above 10 times after me. Why people who are totally unprepared for a dog, who have no fences or unsuitable or damaged fences, persist in getting a pup, Dog only knows. That they are often the same people who given insufficient attention and training is part of the same whole. To the op - maybe go an speak to your neighbours about your concerns?

You are entitled to your opinion, donatella, and you have given it. As I have given mine, and Labradork has given his. All equally valid, I think. I wonder what experience you have had with dogs, how many you have owned, whether you have seen them grow old and die, and whether you have owned large breed dogs? That was a rhetorical question, don't bother answering, I doubt that I shall return to this thread :)
  4. I have only owned 1 LGD, but as he reached the teenage barking years I determined that I could not live with a dog who barked all night. He was barking for a reason - foxes out of my hearing, owls, rodents, kangaroos, aliens, all sorts of things. He lived outside. When he barked, I would determine that there was nothing obvious, and go to him and correct him. I did this every single time he barked (and that might have been 5 times a night), I figured he didn't know what was dangerous, and what was not, so was giving everything equal attention. He only needed to learn what was dangerous. He finally learned what not to bark at, and never barked "inappropriatelY" after that, whether he was inside or outside. It took a lot of patience and effort, but it was worth it. And it can be done.

The OP asked for advice and opinions and was given them. I was astounded that any breeder would sell a pup into this situation, but as the breeder 'doesn't have any time" to socialise, I can see how it would happen. Good luck with that

  7. Wildthing, if you are a genuine poster, would you mind answering my question please?
  8. LOL @ Jo Wildthing Can you tell us please, what method of euthanasia you think is acceptable to kill foxes?
  9. Blacks are the best. Absolutely!! Dunno why everyone wants gold. Gold pups sell like crazy, and no one wants those gorgeous black ones. Black ones are like velvet moving over the ground with gorgeous eyes in there somewhere.
  10. Good luck with the Cocker, IggyPiggy. Check that the parents have been tested for PRA and FN and are clear by DNA or by parentage. I wondered about a Schipperke? They are great little dogs, smart, agreeable, good watchdogs, not too big, some grooming, but not a lot. They come in black and cream, but there aren' t too many cream ones about. Active or happy to lounge around, whatever. Good luck with the cocker, good choice
  11. Congratulations. I am sure that your house will feel complete again with Harry racing around. Mine always does when someone new comes after someone goes .... you can never replace them, but you can remember them and the pleasure they shared. :) How nice that the breeder has black and tan pups. Good luck with Harry, I wish you a long and happy life together.
  12. Run free over the bridge, Orange. Tash, my thoughts are with you, I can imagine noting more devastating than having a pup stolen and then abused. I do hope the the insects who did this are caught and punished. I also hope the run at the vet's has been repaired.
  13. PS - and the money Councils are spending defending themselves in court whilst trying to try to kill harmless boofy dogs like Rocket (see his facebook page) and those other dogs they did kill - could be used for worthwhile things such as inspections. A walk around some streets would divulge problem dogs. Answering call outs about loose dogs would help too The council here employs part timers to go and check on whether dogs are registered - I sincerely hope they are also checking the temperament and containment of the dogs. That is what should be happening. A dog killed and terrorised a few dogs in an off leash park. Other users of the park t ook photos, took photos of the registration number of the car which brought the dog. Provided council with information on THREE occasions; Nothing was done. (*sigh*
  14. Hmm I was told at a UAM conference, by someone who should have known, that it was introduced to negate councils' liability for dog attacks in public places. That made sense to me. It is now used as a political tool. RIP poor little dog. All these attacks are about unsocialised/untrained/not well treated dogs/ who are liable to kill other dogs being loose in public. ACO's should be answering calls about loose dogs, calls about the dog next door which is aggressive and they should be going around the shire, speaking to people, and educating, or removing unsuitable dogs. The whole situation is completely appalling.
  15. I think the RSPCA started an anti check chain campaign - they wouldn't sell them in their pet shop. But then the campaign seemed to fade away. And yes, check chains, in silver, gold and black, chain and snake chain are still used in the ring And when they are used properly, you aren't jerking it on the dog. I train mine on flat collars and when they are good on the flat collar, change to a choker. And if the dog is big, it is possible that the check chain just might avert disaster in a bad situation. I don't understand how those people being towed along by cavaliers on harnesses can tolerate it. I have put it down to a failure to be able to train to a collar
  16. Yep, you have to watch men like that. It was obviously his pick up line, and if you hadn't nipped it in the bud he would have taken you for coffee, given you a ride in his 'cedes, taken you to his 20th floor harbourside apartment, taken you out to dinner regularly, and bought you Chanel No 23 and Whittaker's chocolates, things from Victoria's Secret and rides on his yatch ...... yep better to choke him off. (Actually, I didn't think that was really so rude (which is probably a worry, I used to have social skills)) Might begin walking the dogs. Where was this again? :D
  17. Go for day 11 and 14 - statistically, they are the most likely, but keep checking her yourself for changes.
  18. There were BTs being shown in the late 50s or very early 60s. "bull breeds" and " game " are not interchangeable. I think you might mean "bull and terrier" breeds. Boxers are descended mostly from bulldogs, thus descending from Bullenbeissers.
  19. Two tossers who decided to burgle the house. The dogs heard them and began barking. You can tell from the loudest bark that the dog is barking at something scary, not nothing. Tossers changed their minds because of the dogs barking, but left the dogs with a message through the dog door. Someone knocked off houses in this street - but not ones where the dogs barked. It is pretty standard for idiots up to no good to leave houses with dogs. I am putting on my tin foil hat just in case though!!
  20. Perhaps the breeder has parvo at the property, and the vet, who is not up to speed with the vaccine regime, wants to vac early in the hope of avoiding the pup catching parvo. I know someone who bought a bc pup, rented a house, and when they arrived the neighbour told them pups had recently died of parvo at the house. Her vet vac every 2 weeks. I think some vets should read up on vacs!! And why would she want to buy a dog from a breeder who doesn't know her stuff? She obviously doesn't - to vaccinate so young, when the vac and maternal immunity will clash. She should at least ask the breeder why the pup is being vac so early, and see what she says.
  21. Boxer (I always say that) From a reputable kennel Socialise from day 1 - let it meet lots of people and dogs Commence training from Day 1 Some of the boys are only too happy to finish fights another dog began, so train the dog, and make sure he is well socialised. A very agreeable dog, who, if properly treated, will be devoted to you, will accept another person of you get hitched, and will accept babies, if property introduced. Go to some shows, see the dogs, speak to a few breeders

  23. Wahl with a #7 and #10 blade. If you aren't going to clip off, you can approximate a show trim with these. Which gives a better look.
  24. Donna I guess this is a kibble? How do you know what is in it? The content may well be contaminated by pesticides and faecal matter, herbicides, dust, and fumes, or be genetically modified - and if they comes from ground sprayed with a herbicide it is carcenogenic. I like to see what my dogs eat. Yes, they get dry food, but their entire diet is not dry food. Once you can't see the ingredients, they could be anything. At that price, one would suspect that the ingredients are pure and healthy. Donna, I am not criticising you, I am just cynical :) And I am not sure when dogs became omnivores from carnivores, but I would like to see some scientific evidence that they have become omnivores.
  25. That isn't quite right, Jed. The rescue who ended up with him did the pts. But either way, there is a certain amount of glass houses irony. My bad
