I would desex, but the optimum age would when she has finished growing. If the same vet did those speys which were problematical, I would find another - better - vet. The other downside is that desexed dogs often grow very big coats.

My adults are fed once daily - at night. That suited me better with working etc. After dogs are fed, they are likely to lie around, and I like them to lie around at night and go to sleep, but be up at night barking at possums and stone curlews calling and whatever.

It takes 3 months (4 months, not sure, but 3 mininum) for the microfilaria to hatch and be dangerous. That is why you need to start pups on treatment at 3 -4 months. So if you don't treat until she whelps, she will be fine Can you still buy the daily tablets? I would think they would be safe.

I would have thought temperament would have fallen under the 'standard' category? Just out of curiosiyt- which breeds do you think could use 'a little tweaking'? Some of the brachy breeds spring to mind... Then again, I'm a pet owning person, and not interested in showing... or breeding for that matter. I'm not trying to start an argument - just voicing an opinion about MY OWN preferences is all. T. I would lke to know too. As the owner of 2 (maybe) brachy breeds, I would like to know the "public" perception of them, and what they think needs tweaking. Just curious, but everything we can know makes us better.

How Many Puppies Are Sold In Pet Shops Each Year?
Jed replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
I worked this out about 5 years ago, by working out how many pet shops there were, and phoning around to see how many pups some had, and x it out. I have absolutely no idea what the final figure was . .. but it was a lot. 10s of thousands? I posted it here at the time, but I imagine it has gone now. Of course my notes have gone. -

Whether it will affect her show chances depends on the placement of the teeth. You wont know until the baby teeth are pulled out. Also, pups' mouths change regularly. I intended taking my 5 month old pup to see the breeder, and noticed she was undershot (wrong), so left the visit. A week later two more adult teeth had erupted, and she had a perfect scissor bite again. If this was my pup, I would have spoken to the breeder first, and I don't know whether I would pull the baby teeth or not ..... depends on the placement of the adult teeth, and whether they were correctly placed or not. Teething in pups is problematical, specially for new owners, and I certainly would not desex at this time. You could end up with a desexed show pup.

Unless you're a judge or someone else important in which case this rule is ignored surely not

Agree with all the advice. Only other thing is - teach him to sit - when he has settled a bit - and eventually, he will greet you and sit - and then you have him in your power. I bend down to mine - it they try to nip, I can hold them. If they aren't jumping all over you you can put your face down to them to speak to them ... which is what they want anyhow.

The problem for dogs and dog breeders is that they are totally in Animal Rights sights. It does not matter what breeders do or don't do, it will be totally wrong. And they will bring every dirty trick they have to bear on breeders. Once you needed to look to the future to see what they were up to. Now, look to the past to see what damage they have done to registered dogs. PDE for instance. We have seen that you can do a lot of damage with mass media. The prejudice was made, and is encouraged by Animal Rights, and that will continue until there are no registered dogs - or until we are so bound in numpty regulations that no one is interested in breeding, because our CCs in trying to appease AR will continue to bring in more and more regulations, as will governments. Enjoy it while you can, breeders. Pet owners buy your purebred now if you want one. Soon it will be the large commercial establishment turning out 1000 pups a year or nothing.

Was on TV last night. How fantastic. What an innovative idea to promote these dogs.

That's great dogbesotted, at least he is showing improvement. Hope he doesn't have another tick. With one of mine, although she was obviously envenomated, I could not find the tick, the vet couldn't find it either, so she was clipped to the skin. No tick. He treated her anyhow. The next day, he found it - in the depression beside the point of the hock ..... it must have been too small to see before. The buggers here are so nasty they can kill when they are tiddlers. Mystiqueview, you must be my neighbour!! Fingers crossed for HHH's recovery.

Popantal (similar ingredients as Drontal Canine All Wormer for Dogs - made by Value Plus animal Health Care Australia. Not expensive works well As far as I know Vet Produts Direct sells both these but they are not difficult to access

I am confused by all the photos - but I think breeds with webbed feet have differently shaped toes and the entire foot presents a different surface for displacing water. All breeds must have webs of skin between their toes, but the shape of the foot and webbing is different. My cockers (a water breed ) have very different feet from boxers (cat feet) and Cavaliers. When you see them together, it makes sense. English and Irish setters have different feet - Irish, I understand, to be able to cover the wetter country in Ireland. I can't explain it very well, but if you see both breeds together it is obvious.

Because when you reduce the price, you may encourage someone who couldn't stretch for the extra couple of hundred. More advantageous for the dog to have his new home while he is still young and is not the ONLY puppy at the breeders/ Of course, they may not have reduced the price at all, they may have just said they did.

Bit slow this has been the case for about 20 years now - Its how hundreds a month go out via transpet to a pet shop in Hawaii, its why pet shop people are telling us that most of their puppies come from registered breeders , its why Dogs NSW backed PIAA against Clover Moore's bill. I thought pups weren't going to Hawaii any longer?
-
I don't see any expectations on byb or puppy farmers to take back dogs they bred. Why is this expectation on registered dogs only? Reg dogs usually cost more than BYB and less than puppy farms, yet the expectations are are higher than both. And as Crisovar says, some buyers wont contact the breeder.

Breeders and breeders that rescue should have without a doubt a quarantine area. So should be able to take back or take in a dog at anytime. Yes? But that pre-supposes that breeders will have kennels so they can provide a quarantine area, does it not? A quarantine area doesnt pre-suppose anything....I dont have kennels but I do have a quarantine area....albeit a cubby within a fenced run. :) But that is a kennel, is it not?

Steve I have never seen or heard of any specific breeder/person doing this. Thank dog. Natsu Chan The answer, Natsu Chan is to be true to yourself and your breeding principles. The only people who matter are my dogs, me and my buyers. If people have expectations which I think are unrealistic, there is no pup for them. Tell no lies, do not describe pet quality as show quality, deliver what you promise, every single time. Behave always in a fair and ethical way. A would be buyer contacted me and asked if the cavalier pups were health tested for MVD, SM, LP, HD, Curly Coat and EFD, and for SM. Tests for CC and EFD are done by swab in England. I've never had a dog with either thing, so I don't test. I test hearts, LP, but not HD - not enough of it in the breed to be a problem. The tests for SM give no surety that the pups will not have it and cost about $1500 a time, so I see no point in that. As far as I can see, all the tests are doing is providing a map for future investigations. Additionally, the buyer didn't know that the pups were not tested for any of the above, the parents were. There is a limit to the extent I will go to, so I simply told her I didn;t do all those tests and send her to one of the 4 people in Aus who advertise they test for SM. My experience is that you can only do the best you can. And IMHO, there are buyers out there who understand and appreciate that.

There must be quite a lot of demand in UK. Interesting.

Yes to the first, they were friendly free with information happy to answer all my questions etc. Their dogs were beautiful both in condition and temperment. And important for us was that the pups be raised inside the house with frequent visits with children. All the boxes were ticked or so it seemed. Small claims? no when I couldn't contact them I wrote them off and concentrated on our pup and doing what we could for her. When we let her go it wasn't an easy decision to make and heartbreaking for all of us. the last thing I wanted then was to chase up her breeders I had enough problems dealing with the fallout of a much loved pet not being here, from our then 3 year old kids. So sad. Just like a dodgy used car salesman really.

Hope HHH will be fine I could cheerfully move somewhere there are NO ticks. 3 this year, all wearing Advantix. So much for Advantix. 2 saves, one loss. What a shocking waste of a nice dog. Last tick was miniscule, but it sure packed a punch.

short answer, you can't. I purchased a dog last year almost to the day. I did my research in the breed we were interested in. Found someone sort of local who bred these dogs. I visited with them. Met the parents. Saw how the dogs were kept. Went to visit the pups spoke endlessly with the "breeder" very helpful very nice people. Eventually paid our money and took our pup home. Expected papers to arrive in the post. Papers did not arrive. Breeder did not return calls / emails. Pup wasn't a pure bred. Pup had extensive health issues. Pup was heartbreakingly pts earlier this year. Very very few of us "pet" buyers can tell who is and who isn't doing the right thing. Or even who is who they say they are. Did you choose this breeder because they seemed nice, and knowledgable, and the dogs looked ok? Did you ever consider taking them through the small claims court to get your money back when the dog had health issues? Sorry, just curious :) Post edited because I reaised that the op had answered my original question in her original post. I am a

I would have thought Bob's death, and the hurt to his families and friends would have been worth more. I cannot believe that judges would let these ,,,,,,,,, out. I believe the prisons are full, so they are not locking anyone up. I hope Mrs. Knight goes for compensation from these ............... And from the Victims of Crime fund. How disappointing.
