True, but dogs aren't humans and the general doesn't always suit the specific. :) In your opinion. Metobalism is metabolism. Calories are burned by movement, not by sleeping. The rationale of feeding dogs at night is so that their stomachs are not full during the day so they are able to move about and work freely without a stomach load of food ..... which can cause problems. Dogs like to sleep after eating. Other more important reason is that if you feed a dog at night, and his tummy is full he will go to sleep and digest his food. He is less likely to be running around all night, or barking all night. Edited to say - I had this problem with mine, DD, and I solved the problem by feeding all but the incredible guts, and the keen by slow eaters, together. Of course, there were great scrambles and some growling, but they settled to it and all ate better and seemed to get enough. Apparently quite a few breeders etc. do feel their dogs together. They are fed separately again now though

Uk Research Finds Dogs Take An Owner's Point Of View Into Consider
Jed replied to minimax's topic in In The News
Dogs know and understand heaps more than science gives them credit for .... and now science is proving these things. I think is is great. It is difficult to prove a lot of these things, but we are getting there. Good story about the bread! Sneaky thing! -
What everyone else said. I wouldn't feed her tonight either, but I would continue with the puppy milk - at least she is getting some nutrition, and if her teeth are bothering her, the milk will be easy to drink, and can have an egg added to provide more protein.

Thanks for posting that, labradore -
Report said he was shot in the leg. One can only hope it was the knee. Very painful. There are some sick and probably drug affected ratbags out there with no respect or decency.

My Dear, Sweet Boy Is A Bit Of A 'lemon.'
Jed replied to trinabean's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks Jed, I will consider natural therapies down the track a little bit. I'm waiting to see what the blood/urine/fecal tests come back with this week and will take it from there. I will give the elimination diet a shot too, as it's the only way to definatively work out which foods he can /can't tolerate. I've kept the breeder in the loop about the allergies and colitis. I haven't told them about the heart murmur yet. Is a grade 2 murmur something that can develop or would it have been there since puppyhood? I'm wondering why no vet has noticed it until now? Oh thanks TheLBD. Well yes, you've met him and he loves you to bits too. You are forevermore 'The awesome-orange-squeeky-ball-giver' Did the breeder say anything? Other dogs she owns/bred which were affected? Heart murmur could have been there in puppyhood - but if no vet has picked it up, it was probably acquired later. The outcome does depend on the reason. I think you know about my cocker with a double sided murmur which caused vets to shake there heads and not make any predictions? He lived to 11 and it wasn't his heart which got him. -
My Dear, Sweet Boy Is A Bit Of A 'lemon.'
Jed replied to trinabean's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Trinabean, sorry to hear about Bruno, that is a bummer from hell Hope you told the breeder? Seems to me all the problems are caused by a compromised immune system. I have no idea about this, not having any lemons here - but I would maybe try a Chinest herbalist or a naturopath -- Robert McDowall in Sydney springs to mind. That would probably work better than "conventional" treatment. I don't have a problem with vets, but sometimes other things help more. -
Tralee Oops!! Oh no; not shocked AND stunned How would you feel about hanging, drawing and quartering the employee? And maybe a little torture for the CEO as well? And of course, that damned and possessed car must be sent to the wreckers, after a good dousing with holy water.

How disgraceful. This frightful person should lose his job. How irresponsible is it to leave a dog in a car for 2 hours? I imagine the suffering of that poor dog as her organs shut down due to dehydration, and I think maybe that man should be flogged as well as losing his job. The point is, if you are not responsible enough, don't have a pet, and certainly don't work with animals. How on earth could someone "forget" the baby was in the bath? Or in the pool? How could you forget the dog was in the car? It should be in your forebrain. And yes, you might overlook it for a moment or two, or not realise if the dogs had jumped in without your knowing, but to leave a dog in a car for TWO HOURS defies belief. And I often wonder if those poor babies and children who drown really died by accident.

Sbt Breeders Please Help Solve An Argument!
Jed replied to Remarkabull's topic in General Dog Discussion
There are some people who need to wrap aluminum foil around their heads to prevent the rays damaging their brain. These rays are particularly nasty on facebook, so it is a good idea to have the aluminum foil Of course, there are some people who don't need the foil, because they have no brain!! Ergo, there is no point in arguing with her! -
My pups survived, and so did the pups of a friend, without the pillowcase That's fantastic, Kaff, but it could be time for another vet.

I haven't read all this thread, but not only will this rule prevent docked dogs being shown, it also will prevent imported dogs who are legally docked being shown; and it will stop bob tail boxers being shown. No matter what anyone thinks about bobtail boxers, they were sanctioned in the UK, and allowed and registered by the ANKC; and allowed in other countries. People who have put a lot into bobtail boxers (not me) will be up the creek without a paddle. There is a fairly big and apparent difference between importing a dog, and importing semen. If the dog is docked, this rule would prevent it being promoted to its full potential, and perhaps stop important and beneficial lines being disseminated Australia wide. A very retrograde and backward motion imho.

Bull arab x pointer x cattledog x hound (any sort) x bull terrier. Depending on size/age, is it possible that he is a pig or roo dog?
-
No - the Amstaff breeders went one way, and the APBT breeders went another way. I think when pit fighting was outlawed, some breeders wanted to develop and promote the dog away from the pits. They were named Staffordshire Terriers in the 30s and that was amended to American Staffordshire Terrier in the 60s or 70s. Different people involved with either/both breeds seem to have differing opinions on whether they are the same or different dogs. I feel that because of the length of time since the original split, they are different dogs. During a court case in Q not too long ago, the judge also ruled that APBT and Amstaffs were different breeds. (Not that that means much except legally!!)

A certain t ype of person loves to say he has a pitbull, whether it is or not!! A friend's late teenaged son swore his dog was a pitbull, although she was a staffy. And mostly you can't tell what it is. To get a purebred pitbull, you needed to buy from a breeder who registered their pups. There is a registry in USA which has been registering pitbulls since the late 1800s. Those breeders would be members of the APBT Club in Australia, and would have supplied full registration paper with the pup. As no one reputable is now breeding APBT, there is no chance of getting a papered = purebred one.

Ive always believed that our pets do go on in spirit, and when they pass that they are simply living another life. I couldn't believe that there was a picture of the rainbow bridge .... it was so difficult to lose my beautiful dogs and my faith wavered a bit. Then to receive that photo was amazing. Yep, maybe it is simply condensation, and a trick of the light, but I do believe the rainbow was there for me to think the obvious, and I do. The photo hasn't been photoshopped or altered (and you kidding, I can hardly put a photo up here never mind alter one!!) and it can be seen on the nearmap site. I am happy if it has made you feel a bit easier about losing your pets. Specially you, Cazstaff And I am quite sure that the bridge was waiting for Cazstaff's lovely boy, as I am sure it is for other dogs. It is simply that we cannot see it.
-
Cazstaff, when 5 of my dogs perished when my house burned down, I felt very low. Then someone sent me a copy of this photo, to show me where my dogs went. Nearmap took this photo on 11 May 2010, the day before the fire. You can see the bridge right over the top of my property waiting for the dogs to climb it. There was no rain, no clouds that day. No other nearmap copy of any date shows any rainbows. I know what I think, and I hope it has the same effect on you as it did on me.

Bitten By A Snake... Waiting For The Vets To Call :(
Jed replied to miss2's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope Spud is ok. Fingers crossed for him. What type of snake was it? -
What Sheridan said. Almost all standards "prefer dark eyes". Dark eyes have more pigment - and perhaps that makes for a sounder eye. I have never seen factual evidence of why dark eyes are preferred but dark eyes soften the expression, which is mostly called for in a lot of standards. With dark eyes it is more difficult to see the pupils, which would further soften the expression.

Kelpiex. Maybe kelpiex X german shepherdX but that is only a guess. He's a black Cuddlehund, as someone already said.

They are different breeds. You can get a TT from an ANKC breeder, and a MF from a MF breeder, and it will be properly registered by the MF club. If you particularly want ANKC registration, go Tenterfield Terrier
