  1. Re age of stud dogs. Recommendations from England were that Cavs not be used for breeding until 5 years to give the best chance possible of them not having syringomyelia. + lots of show people will not stand their dogs until they have attained some show benchmark - so the dog will not be standing as a young dog.
  2. Cotex, according to the product description, only kills brown dog ticks. There is nothing there about paralysis ticks. Bad news about the frontline plus, Team Snag, I hope the dogs are well into recovery
  3. Tick collars, and Permoxin, which you dilute in water and spray on the dog weekly. I think permoxin is one of the ingredients of Advantix, so maybe try it on a small spot first? Also check Advantix pack to see whether Permoxin is in it
  4. I'll never forget the pic of Chi, in her 'pyjamas' in the foster-home she was first taken to. I think it was in Kingaroy. She looked so snug & warm, with her tiny face sticking out. Chi was a very special little dog. I am sure she was sent to me to grow my soul. Now over the bridge with the others. I am so pleased there is a photo of the bridge ready for them to cross.
  5. Thanks, DD. Still can't move properly, still have ongoing issues from grafts and burns, still have back pain from lying still for so long (although I am sure I was turned), will never work again ........ some psychological issues, and maybe ptsd. Still on lots of pills --- this healing doesn't happen in a second, but seeing that film showed me that there had been some improvement ... well, I have hair now, and proper eyebrows and eyelashes. And I don't fall over as regularly as I used to. I am gradually recovering my strength, and I can now prune larger branches than I could, and slide the couch across the floor. I am grateful for all my friends .... and really ... for what the RSPCA did .. my dogs were better for the RSPCA intervention. No point in snivelling, it was my choice..... it is what it is.
  6. Forgot the g irl - Bella/Phoenix. Sorry about the blurry photo, but it does show some of the fire scars. She has grown up to be a nice girl. I intended selling her, but she is the only boxer I had at that time. Bella is a little nervous of strangers. Marjorie is not at all good with strange men .... I suppose all those vehicles, bells and whistles, strange people tramping all over, the sirens - the lights.. what a shame. Never mind. Everyone else is fine And the original thread, which went from May to November 2010. But it is 241 pages http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/195764-women-injured-and-animals-killed-in-overnight-fires-caboolture-qld/
  7. I would have died without the start the fire alarm making horrible noises to wake me up gave me.
  8. Thanks, Mantis - I knew that :) No problems. I thought I should come on and say what has been happening, as some people would like to know. I could probably catch up more .... and the patchwork quilt which lovely people on DOL made goes on the bed, looks marvellous, and makes me remember all the wonderful people on here who were so caring, and gave me a such a lift. Chi was a dog with a huge personality, a pit bull in chihuahua clothing!! Thanks everyone :)
  9. The producers prodded me out of my sick bed and drove me for 3 hours to re-meet the dogs. I was quite keen to see them again. It was recorded in early July 2010, but has never been aired before. They edited quite a lot from it - including my telling him I had a crewcut because my hair burned off. They didn't say that, so I suppose everyone watching thought I was a prison escapee, or a bald crazy dog lady!! It was good to see it again. It was nice to see dear Albert. His heavy smoke inhalation lead to a murmur, and unfortunately, he left me late last year. I never saw Velvet again, the one eyed black and tan - she died (old age) before I was well enough to have her back, ditto Ruby, who didn't star in the show. Luckily these girls were together with a wonderful woman who adored them. It was sad not to ever see them again. Poor Chi, who didn't make it to the film either, died last year, a few days before I was to collect her. She was being cared for my daughter who is the vet. She went to work one morning, leaving Chi in her bed tucked up, came home, and Chi was dead. Did a pm, could find no cause. I feel poor Chi died of a broken heart. She missed me and her friends - and could only hold on so long. But probably, with all her problems, one of them was to blame. Surprising that nothing showed up on pm. She wasn't old either. I probably should have gone to see her as soon as I returned, but I had to collect the cavs and the cockers. It was so sad that the 3 girls died before I saw them again. However, it was marvellous to have dear Albert back - he was very naughty when he was away, and he was just so delighted to see me again, he became my shadow, and he never did anything naughty again. It was so sad that he passed early. It wasn't too horrible watching the film - I thought what an old skinhead cranky pants I was. However, the film was in the past, so not too traumatic. So sad that everyone was seeking Magnus, and he was in eternal sleep with his friends. Lots of other things have happened, but that's the doggy news to date. None of it good!! Bella the baby boxer is now a big grown up boxer, with scars over her flank and up her side from where hot stuff dropped on her when I was carrying her out. The other two boxer pups were fine. She is ok now though, and bears the scars of signs about how close it was for her!! Shandy all grown up. Shandy was doing well in the showring pre-fire. I would like to show her again. she is Meg's daughter And Magik - she is Shandy's daughter, so Meg's grand-daughter, and she has some of Meg's habits. She begins her show career in June
  10. I am sure they will accept something from Q. DogsNSW is advising people to state on their forms "interested person" rather than CC member. Last time people said they were CC members, they gov. counted ALL the responses as one! I have sent one in as an interested person. I like what you have written, and I am sure most purebred people agree with you, but you have said it well and I think it is going to take a big effort to overcome this one. Do it for the dogs :)
  11. I hope you submitted a response, Mita, (or a couple) saying just that - as an interested member of the public. Great response. We know that, but someone needs to tell them
  12. Isn't there something about "commercially prepared" offal? That could cover manufacturers.
  13. Steph M, you mentioned "knees", so I guess the problem is luxating patellas? Can be hereditary or acquired - medial is usually hereditary. Problem is that both parents can be clear, ditto g/parents and one pup from the litter can be affected. People with problems with purebred registered pups should approach the breeder - in a reasonable, non judgemental and non threatening way, or email, and mention the problem ... see what happens then. I am not sure I would be doing any patella ops on a 9 month old, without a specialist opinion - or two. Vets are quick to call LP on growing toy pups ... mostly they are right, mostly not.
  14. Apparently, only 800+ forms have been filled in and returned. Look forward to paying a licensing fee, peeps, or complete and return the form :)
  15. I asked my stud dog, and he was horrified. And - why would you stop using a dog at 7? If his likely lifespan is 15+, he will still be fertile. ALL this IMHO, is calculated to make to too difficult for people to continue to breed dogs. And a health plan agreed to by my vet? If I asked my vet about that, he would fall about laughing.
  16. I understand that the reason for some dogs so actively disliking members of other races - Asian, Indian, Aboriginal etc, is because they smell different.
  17. I would consider a Schipperke too. Great dogs, great temperaments, lots of fun, just love children. If handled correctly, they are easy to train. Not sure about being home alone a lot
  18. Sorry - my misunderstanding - "recognition" not "priority"
  19. Troy, I believe it said that people who show or do other activities will be given "priority"? Wouldn't it be better to police what you have now that make even more rules? There is currently a puppy advertiser on site who says the pups are not registered.
  20. The Courier Mail, Brisbane's biggest circulation newspaper had a couple of pages of dog and cat ads. "Everyone" advertised there. Registered Cavaliers next to Cavoodles, Boxers before Bull Arabs. Then the CM put some rules on the advertising. You needed to say how many pups, and they charged you a % of that. There were also some other regulations. I didn't like them much, so I moved my ads away. I looked last week at the ads and the dogs and cats were in together - in 2 columns. I think that the web took away a lot of their users, but many left because of regulations. Funny, you could advertise your ride on without any restrictions but not your pups, and these restrictions had nothing to do with health concerns. Same deal - there are plenty of internet sites to advertise on, and if this site becomes the province of only those who show every weekend, so be it. :) Troy's decision as to where the site goes.
  21. Oh So Swift. Yep. But that doesn't mean - as users, we shouldn't have input - whether it is taken into account or not.
  22. 2 years. After they are criticised, casticated and talked about behind their backs endlessly by their peers because they used the dog they did. And the public doesn't have a clue about whether the parents are good or not. As far as the dog world imploding - if these regs in Vic and NSW are made law, and second degree matings are banned - 5 years; if not, 10 years There are hardly any purebred dogs in most breeds available now. Every time some new obstacle comes along, a few people walk off. When it is all done, the world will blame the breeders themselves because there are no purebred dogs, but they left because it was too hard.
  23. Some of the AKC responses to AR and to anti AKC articles etc, is very impressive. Lots of balls. The incoming president's speech was amazingly uplifting :) Thanks for posting that
  24. Licensing wont make any difference to those who wish to avoid it. Get a mobile phone, take calls, meet people in a nice park, take their money, give them the pup, drive home, throw the mobile away. Do not put your name, only the mobile number, on the paperwork (if you give them any). Too easy, and you can say that the pups are microchipped. How are the new owners going to find out unless they have their own scanner; or when they go to the vet. They can phone you all they like ... you are never going to answer. Other benefit of this is that if something goes wrong with the pup, you are uncontactable. Again, the honest and ethical will be doing the right thing and the people they want to catch, wont. And probably more people will walk away. It is nearly impossible to buy a registered Maltese now ..... which is one reason the maltesex sell so well. Shame really.
  25. I think it is far too much regulation by a non-regulatory body. And I think expecting it to make a blind bit of difference is extremely optimistic. And what is dol going to do about XXXXXX and XXXXXX kennels, which are on the top of the tree show wise, import wise, and health wise, but breed many more dogs than dol is happy with. Ban them from advertising? And the many others in that category. And how does stating the name of sire and dam achieve anything? I look through the puppy ads for a breed I don't have, and have no idea whether Magnificent Lollipop and Handsome Harry are good dogs or horrible ones because I have never heard of them. They could be stunning, but if I wanted to buy into that breed, I would have no idea. But - plenty with the same breed will have plenty to gossip about once they know which dogs are being used. Sire dogs tout their studs excessively, and if they don't know what dog has been used there is not as much grief as if they did. I would prefer not to advertise to other breeders what dogs I am using, not because I breed too many, but because I don't care for the gossip, and like to keep away from it. My latest litter was by an impsupch who is not advertised at stud. I used him because the bloodlines and conformation fitted with those of my bitch. Because of her breeding I was allowed to use him - the terms were that I could keep what I wanted, the rest of the litter had to go on limited register. All good with me. The pet buyers don't care whether the sire was impsupch, they did not even know they were buying show quality, they were happy to have a healthy outgoing pup. I shut up about the sire of the litter - but once it got out, others were banging on the door to use the dog. How could I when they couldn't? Puts the stud dog owner under a lot of pressure. Sometimes I use a non-titled dog that no one has heard of. Who cares? What is important is the quality of the pups, and listing the parents names in dol doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. One of our registered puppy farmers has now begun showing .... or says so. What difference does that make to the however many dogs locked up in kennels and runs down the back, with insufficient socialisation or care?
