This topic was put on the forum on 14/8, with a sub-heading which is incorrect. With respect to these people, I think the subheading should be removed.

Meanwhile, where are the court charges for cruelty? Thanks to AA, AWL and RSPCA, we are back to the days of Salem and the witch hunts. The victims are presumed guilty without any trials, or any evidence.

Yesterday, I took my young dog for a walk, and stopped to speak to my neighbour who has 2 preschool children. They came up to her, and as she has never seen preschool children before, she was frightened of them, so she growled a little. That is menacing. My friend took her rottweiler to the off lead park. The rottweiler spied some children on swings in the next park, and loving children, ran over to them (ignoring the owner's calls. Screaming, they ran away, with the dog, thinking it was a game, running after them. That is menacing. I would think a dog which growls, barks, or runs at a person is menacing.

There are some lovely people in the dog world, but unfortunately, there are toads too. Now there are memebers of the public who suspect that most things breeders do are cruel. But well done.

Unfortunately, the legislation that the previous (labour) government was cobbling together was going to be yet another disaster for registered breeders. When the liberal party was elected, at least the rotten legislation was ditched. They wont grasp the nettle and do the right thing, so they just pick on everyone else. PIAA needs a reality check. Heaps of pet shops survive without selling pups or kittens. I have a friend with one in a smaller town which actually rehomes rescue cats - they don't need to sell pups. And if there were no pups in shops, there would be insufficient income for puppy farms to survive. Most politicians, including can-do, cannot distinguish between categories of pups, or their origin. MITA, I read another study which is in the Merk manual about socialisation and puppy farms. Not good. It is an old survey too. Gotta go and play with the pups!!

Survey - Do We Judge A Book By Its (canine) Cover?

What type of dogs did everyone see? -
That's bad news, such a slack vet. I do hope Bruno will be ok, he certainly was hit with the $hit stick!! One of my boxers at about 3 had a mast cell tumour on her stomach. Because we all thought it was a wart (vet too) nothing was done for a months. Then she developed a fast growing lump on her neck, so we decided to knock off the wart as well. The wart, of course, was a mast cell tumour - good margins, and she lived for another 5 or 6 years without problems. With the ear they should be able to get good margins. Poor Bruno's immune system is in a bad way. There is a boxer breeder in US who advocates this rather peculiar cancer treatment for boxers (I think it is peculiar anyhow!!). There is nothing you can't buy anywhere; but heaps of boxer owners swear by it. If my dog had a problem, I would certainly try it, on the basis that it wont hurt, and may well help. Will pm you when I find it! Will be sending get well vibes to poor Bruno Edited to say I have just sent you the link/

Breeders-cost For A Show/breeding Prospect V. Pet?
Jed replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
The price is not likely to be the same as it is now. Different breeders charge differently. If you are interested in a dog from Breeder X why not ask him? -
Doesn't seem like "bad breeding practice" from my (recent) reading, and I think you vet needs to get his knowledge up to speed, rather than have a breeder bash. Sorry HW can't open the link, but here is another one (I think) http://www.labradornet.com/ectopic-ureter.html And an extract I notice this article quotes Karen H further down ... so if it is the same article, my apologies. My friends who breed and win with their goldies have had one wet pup, of a litter of 10, which was a second repeat mating with no problems in any other pups. The problem was surgically repaired by the vet at about 10 weeks. Not cheap, and I don't know enough about it to know whether surgical intervention would be effective with this GR. My advice to the op is to contact the breeder - to advise him what has happened. I would also be seeking a specialist opinion.

And the charges that were to be heard in court this week??? As Oscar's Law is not a law, maybe these charges are not charges?

In the AA video and particularly in the video made by Stephen Thompson made, all dogs were well cared for. All dogs were groomed, not knotty, friendly, and easy going ..... if they looked unhappy in the AA video, it may have been because they WERE stressed by numerous people they had not seen before trespassing. As I said before, mine would have gone ape. And I do give my dogs water overnight (they aren't kennelled), but the geriatric who sleeps on the bed doesn't bother about a drink - he often doesn't get up until 9.30 either, so he obviously isn't thirsty. He is neither ga ga nor unable to get off the bed. I think we should not judge on some dodgy video made by dog-breeder haters who creep around in the middle of the night like thieves.

Sorry, but that doesn't cut the mustard - Straya is a big place, the Border Mail covers a small corner. I don't believe that zillions of dogs are being stolen, but some are, and I think it is foolish for people to think they aren't. Actually, dogs have always been stolen, facebook both tells lies about it, and puts it in your face. Good to know no dogs are being used for fights in the circulation area of the Border Mail.
-
twodoggies, what did the videos say to you about the conditions the dogs were kept in? I thought the dogs were in night kennels, which is why they were small .... most of them had a wooden platform to sleep on (ate their beds?) and they were a bit rundown. Oh and some cobwebs. I thought a bit run down and some cobwebs were nothing much. They didn't impact on the way the dogs lived. Dogs chew things, and dogs had chewed some of the kennels too. How did you see it?
-
There was a question asked here some years ago about who left water for dogs overnight, and numerous people said "no" and gave good reasons. I really don't think dogs will die of dehydration inside a kennel overnight without water. Dogs go on over 24 hour flights around the world, without water. Cruelty? No, best practice, apparently. Also, we don't know the where or the why of any of this ...... for all we know, the dogs might have been in those kennels for 2 hours while other kennels were cleaned. Spinning? Who wouldn't be spinning with some AA idiot with a camera clambering all over the dividers? Who wouldn't be pacing? Some of mine would have been cringing on the floor, some would have been launching themselves at the AA nuts. One of my dogs does a few spins at dinner time - and if you replayed the footage, she would look cruelly treated. People come here asking for help with spinning dogs. No one shouts "cruelty" and fetches the RSPCA, do they? So why are we hanging drawing and quartering someone because their dog was spinning in a situation which would have been very stressful? For me, the telling thing was the condition of the dogs ... all in good solid condition, no obvious mats, looked as if they were frequently groomed, the old dog was old, but ok - do we kill our old dogs to keep AA happy? Where are the charges? What are the charges? Show me the charges. I remember someone being charged for debarking because you can't show debarked dogs. I remember a rescuer being charged numerous times with cruelty, and some of her OLD dogs being PTS because they were old. I am over witch burning at the stake.
-
I notice it doesn't say anything about what the charges are. As I understand it, the permits for the kennels are not relevant. I could never see anything wrong with the dogs ... the old dog looked a bit off, but that is what happens - I suppose you could knock off all your dogs before they got old so everything would be hunky dory if AA trespassed. I thought all the dogs were excellent, none of them went ballistic about strange idiots standing on the wall taking videos of them. Night kennels - no bedding, cause they ate it, and no water overnight which is exactly what hundreds of owners do. Just another AR beat up. Go to facebook, and look at actual footage

All 4 dogs pictured above are sickle hocked. Is that ok? The standard says According to my reading, the back should be straight, with no slope until the croup. Standard again This disallows cow hocks (hind legs are parellel) and also sickle hocks ... it allows for he legs to be set back, but the pasterns shold be perpendicular under the hock joint. How does this equated with all the photos we see of GSD? Unfortunately, Ish, the link you gave is broken
-
If they were serious, they would ban the sales of pups in pet shops. Too easy. They aren't serious. The might of the PIAA is more important than the life of a few dogs.

And according to surveys I have read, it can be caused by a dog having no stored calcium. I have no way of knowing tnat. I am not interested in supplementing pre whelping. And, as no one has offered results of proper studies, I shall continue to supplement during and post whelping, as I have read studies on that which made sense
-
But surely it cannot be correct for the dogs to have sickle hocks? Sickle hocks is an Excessive angulation of the hock joints This is a weakness, becaue the angle of the joint is decreased, thus placing the plantar aspect of the hock under great stress, particularly the plantar ligament. A dog with sickle hocks is thus predisposed to strain and sprain of the soft tissue support structures on the plantar hock region. Nearly every dog photo uploaded here shows sickle hocks. The point of the hock should be in line with the point of the buttock and the rear aspect of the lower leg should form a straight line with the hock and point of buttock.

I am not talking about supplementing PRIOR TO WHELPING, I am talking about supplementing POST WHELPING. I never supplement prior to whelping, and in any case, I have never heard of a bitch with eclampsia PRIOR to whelping.
-
Steve, an injection for eclampsia is all very well - providing the bitch is alive to be injected. "Now the treatment for inertia and eclampsia is an INJECTION of calcium to bring the bloodstream back to having enough calcium so it is easy to see why people think that if they provide extra calcium during pregnancy or lactation that it will prevent a problem but the science tells us it causes the problem and a supp will prevent the hormone turning on when it needs to because the body has forgotten how ." Link to studies please?
-
So, you are all saying do not supplement with calcium post whelping. Are there any studies on whether the incidence of eclampsia is increased without calcium supplement> Eclampsia is a life threatening problem. I would want to know that eclampsia would NEVER result from not supplementing POST whelping. The only time my dogs have calcium is post whelping. They eat a balance diet. Theoretically I should not have a problem with eclampsia. Theoretically.
