I keep the things that I find usefull but I'll give away things that I don't want that someone else would like and use. I give away or sell most of the dog food that I win, I'm really fussy about what I feed my dogs.

Sighthound People Is This A Sloughi?
WreckitWhippet replied to mixeduppup's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
When we were looking to purchase a Sloughi, we found that there had only been two in the country and that was years and years ago. There are none now and they have not been bred from -
I respond with " they certainly are, provided they have been carefully bred and have been adequately socialised as babies " SBT's are renowned for being the "nanny" dog. When I talk about SBT's, I am referring to pedigree dogs, not the generic brindle pound mutt

What can be done, is to return the pup and not to line such "breeders" pockets, it only serves to encourage them. I don't buy into the emotional black mail card of " what will happen to the puppy if I return it " or " I had to buy it and give it a good home" Just a quick look at the pics and the puppy is very weak in the pasterns , it has very splayed feet. The "breeder" has neglected to trim nails, the pup has drop ears and is generally of a very poor type.

to put it bluntly your vet is an idiot and has no idea when it comes to SBT's. Neither L2-HGA or HC can be detected via a physical examination and they require DNA testing. There are most certainly carriers of both diseases in this country, NO "breeder" ( I use the term loosely) should be mating SBT's without knowing the status of the parents and at the very least a person purchasing an SBT should be given a copy of the parents certificates. You have been given some invaluable advice from SBT people in the know and have chosen to ignore it. I hope for you and your puppies sake that it all goes well. ETA: there is no cure for L2-HGA and affected dogs suffer terribly from the symptoms. Dogs affected with HC go blind at a young age and that's certainly not fair on them. If your breeder knows nothing about L2-HGA and HC, then they probably have no idea about , type, temperament, structure and soundness. SBT puppies can also inherit weak immune systems, which leaves them vulnerable to demodectic mange and allergies. Dogs with poor conformation also produce puppies with poor conformation, patella and cruciate problems are rife in poorly bred SBT's. As an SBT breeder and enthusiast, I;m passionate about the quality of puppies being produced and even more passionate that potential buyers don't get taken for a ride. My advice is to return the pup and seek out a breeder who does care.

Is There A Whippet Rescue In Nsw?
WreckitWhippet replied to Shelter List's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
The NSW Whippet Club as a rescue co-ordinator. I'm more than happy to foster a Whippet but they do need to be Whippets as I do not take on cross bred fosters. -
My advice if it's a blue pup, walk away now and if they are not an ANKC registered breeder, also walk away.

Crate training can be invaluable, especially with an SBT. It helps with taking them on holiday, going to visit other people and having a place where they can chill out. You also never know if and when an accident might happen and crate trained dogs can handle being locked away at vets or if they have to be put on strict rest for whatever reason. Pro Plan is fine, however when it comes to SBT's, you should be careful with the amounts of grains, preservative, colouring and flavouring they have. Some can be very intolerant of them and it will often manifest as skin conditions. Mince is great but you need to keep the cal/phos ratios balanced, so meat should be fed on consumable bone or in the case of mince, contain bone. SBT pups will easily get through chicken wings, necks and lamb flap. Give them a couple of months and they can tackle turkey wings, whole lamb flaps, roo tails, rabbits etc

Which Flea Treatment Do You Find Works Best?
WreckitWhippet replied to Blakbelgian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you are using Frontline and are seeing fleas on your dog, then they are fleas that have just hopped on. There have been no studies that have proven there is a resistance to Frontline. I'd be vry reluctant to use anything on my breeding dogs, where studies have not been conducted, where breeding animals are concerned. Treat the yard with lime. I have asked the question to our Frontline rep regarding lime and why it works. She presented that question to a scientist who studies fleas and they have suggested that it may be abrasive to them or burn them. Lime appears to do the trick on lawns, in gardens and under houses. -
7 Month Female Labrador Being Too Protective?
WreckitWhippet replied to Chikko Baby's topic in Puppy Chat
In entire bitches that is usually an indication that they have raging hormones and they are a month or so off coming into season . -
Menigitis was the first thing that came to my mind.

Staffy Food Recommendations (skin Problems)
WreckitWhippet replied to mooki's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you have an SBT that has skin issues, you need to look at what you are putting on and in your dog. The following won't cure your dog if it does have a true allergy but it can go a long way in helping a dog that is sensitive. If you want to feed dry food, look for one that is "grain" free, in particualr wheat and neither Pro Plan or Advance are wheat free. Don't feed table scraps with grains in them. Eliminate treats such as Shamacko's from the diet. Aim to feed foods that are colour and preservative free, buy human grade mince and meaty bones. Think about your vaccination schedule ( there's a lot of reading on here regarding over vaccination ) Consider what chemcials you are putting on and in your dog when it comes to flea/tick/heartworm etc, if you are not in a heart worm area and do not have fleas in your yard, then you might like to reconsider monthly treatments. You can feed an omega 3/6/9 Use pieces of carrot, apples, home made dried liver and cooked chicken as training treats. Roo tails, whole lamb necks, chicken carcass, wings, necks, rabbit, brisket bone and turkey wings and legs can be fed to replace a meal or you might want to investigate going raw. You aren't going to fix a dog that has allergies and will need to go beyond seeing a vet and visit a specialist. SBT's that are prone to skin conditions are usually not very well bred and have come from parents/grandparents that were also prone to the same thing. I don't know what your plans are for your dog but I'd be eliminating him from the gene pool and making sure he doesn't reproduce. -
I know someone who thinks its funny and cute that his dog brings home shoes. Apart from breaking the law and allowing his dog to roam, he's lack of considertaion for the owners of the missing shoes astounds me. It's not cute, funny or otherwise

at 8 months or any age for that matter, SBT's should be lean. They should have an evident tuck behind the ribs and you should be able to easily feels the ribs of the dog. Judge a dog by the muscle tone, body condition and the coat, not what they dog weighs. ETA a 6-8 month old SBT

Testoprop is the main one that we use with the Greys, it's the easiest to manage and would be ideal. You can use tables or paste but they are a pain in the rear end

To Report Or Not To Report...
WreckitWhippet replied to Chris the Rebel Wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
Goodness, that is a horrible thing to say. The cause of the problem is the dog owner. The OP is caught up in a situation not of their choosing that is obviously causing a great deal of distress. To the OP, my feeling is that it is time to report to the Council now, regardless of how uncomfortable you are that you will be identified. I would also carry a big stick with you so that you can better keep the aggressive dog away from you and your dogs. Most councils are far more pro-active than german_shep_fan's. In their case, I would have written to the CEO/Mayor and maybe the newspapers to remind them of their liability should an incident happen of which you had previously reported and they had done nothing about. Horrible thing to say, I think not. It's the inactions of some that lead to the injury of others and their animals. Sure the owner is utlimately responible for any injury or fear their dog may cause, however those who do not report roaming and rushing dogs also play a part. I'm sick of hearing people whinge about roaming dogs, aggressive dogs, dogs that rush, dogs that crap on their front lawn etc, but take months to do anything about it, if they can be bothered at all. -
What Silly Things Is Your Dog/dogs Scared Of?
WreckitWhippet replied to mantis's topic in General Dog Discussion
Probably not a silly thing to be scared of but Bretty The Brave has a very healthy respect for Geese. Swans and ducks are considered prey but them Geese will make him run in the opposite direction and they don't need to do anything other than stand there -
Cat Wanted
WreckitWhippet replied to WreckitWhippet's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thanks I'll check it out. We are also on the hunt for a mouser. We'd be happy to take a couple of cats. I'm not sure if rescues would consider the place to be a worthy home but it's worth a try. -
We are looking for a cat for our work shed. It's basically a 24 hour business with someone there the majority of the time. The cat will be well cared for ( I'll do the worming etc ) and well fed. Cat would also have access to the heated office and plenty of attention. We are located near Bathurst and have been unable to find a suitable cat at any of the local pounds, notice boards and the usual places. Not fussed on what the cat looks like, prefer friendly enough that we can get our hand on it to worm and generally take care of. ETA: Rural location with no immediate neighbours

To Report Or Not To Report...
WreckitWhippet replied to Chris the Rebel Wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's the inaction from people like the OP who have issues with neighbourhood dogs and do not report it to council, that leaves people like me with injured dogs. You've gotten off lightly from the charging dog, spare a thought for the next person who comes along and they aren't so lucky or they have a reactive dog and things don't go so well for them. Report it to council and do the rest of the neighbourhood and the unsuspecting a favour.
