Using Human Dandruff Shampoos On A Dog?
WreckitWhippet replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The only thing I will use on one of my SBT's is head and shoulders. It certainly does do the job. His diet is excellent and he gleams but he tends to scurf up with bathing and excitement and stress -
It's not the money for me either and there's no way in hell i'd ever put a dog through chemo. It's not something that I would choose for myself and having seen how sick and sad animals are having gone through it, I'd rather euth a dog, than put it through something it can't talk to you about

a 36 inch crate will be fine

I seperate them when the bitch first comes in and then put them together for a short while until I see a mating and then run them together until she goes off. I've not had any issues doing it this way and my bitches have fallen pregnant. I've had issues when I've stuffed around, tried to supervise matings and intervened. A mating is a natural thing, it's not rocket science and they are best left alone to get on with it.

Introducing Peaches & Beau

If the Pom is racing about like a mad thing outside, then it's obviously enjoying itself and exercise. Give it five minutes to run around, do it's thing and then toilet. If you have to dry it off so be it. There are plenty of precious dogs who pee in the house when it's wet out, because they haven't been made to toilet in all conditions, why encourage it. and when it comes the BYB pups, there's some pots calling the kettle black in this thread. a dog with no papers, is not a purebred or a pedigree, it's just an animal that looks like a breed -
I've raised numerous SBT litters and pups and I've found the best approach is to keep them busy. They bite because it's fun. You can't expect an SBT pup to settle down for a snuggle while their brains are racing. Get yourself a clicker or even just some food and set about wearing his brain out with short training sessions as many times a day as you can manage. A couple of minutes here and there is more than enough and you will see a big difference in the mouthing. They can't be walked for hours on end as babies and you'll not be able to give them enough exercise to tire them out, so training is the way to go.

So many are now just watered down, gutless shells of what they used to be, all in the name of "family pet".

Help..labrador Skin Problem.
WreckitWhippet replied to dBUG's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Don't put any creams on it, that smoother the areas. You want it to be as dry and open to air flow as possible. It looks like pyoderma -
get the vebo crates. I have SBT's and they haven't been able to get out of one. They do packs of three if you want them all the same size and they are really cheap to buy that way. I'll try and find the link for the bulk buys

Give the puppy half a teaspoon of 20+ Manuka Honey three times and day and it will be fine. AB's are overkill for kennel cough and are only required to fight secondary infection, they do no good at all if the dog simply has a cough and non coloured discharge

http://sydney.edu.au/research/opportunities/opportunities/1599 Haredown, I suppose he could approach the breed clubs in an attempt to obtain information but then again no one in their right mind would want to work with him, given his agenda. It's just a shame that DogsNSW gave him our data without consulting the members., although I'm pretty sure they won't be doing that again any time soon.

What do I want from science ? For so called "scientists" to have the balls to stand up and say when they've got it wrong but that's not going to happen. Let's just press on regardless and damn the consequences, too late the damage is done.

When people resort bullying and ridicule to shut down what they don't want to hear discussion is pointless. Sorry Corvus, hope you get some good ideas. I'm very interested to know what came of that, given that I have four breeds of Sighthound. From memory the majority of owners who responded to Corvus in the first instance were those who had ex race dogs and I also produced a few of those.

Hey Corvus, hows the research into the "timid" Sighthounds going ?

Seizures & Heartworm Meds
WreckitWhippet replied to pomtwins's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Spray them with insect repellent and get rid of anything in your yard that makes it an attractive place for mozzies to breed. If you live somewhere cool climate, then you don't have much to worry about -
The only thing McGreevy is interested in is the end of the pedigree dog
-
I can sum it up in one word " McGreevy"
-
Some research without an "agenda" would be nice oh and some research that doesn't lump every mongrel bred dog that happens to resemble a breed in with our pedigree dogs.

whatever happened to training and raising well rounded dogs, then the owners wouldn;t have to bitch and moan about what their dogs do.

For Those That Haven't Gone To Training Recently
WreckitWhippet replied to Cosmolo's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd love to hear from those who have NOT taken their dog to training (group, private- some kind of organised training) in the last 3 months. Haven't been to formal training in years. I did train and trial at one stage What was the reason why you stopped training your dog? The two I trained to trial have since passed away. I have moved and this area lacks quality trainers Do you feel your dog is well trained enough? I teach my dogs whatever daily commands I need to live happily with them and have them do as they are told. Yes I feel my dogsare well enoughed trained. The most important thing is that they all have "recall". Did you not get results from previous training attempts? Yes I got results, I was very happy with the previous trainers and their methods Is training too far away/ too often/ too expensive? Are you simply too busy? Did you find training boring? To find a decent trainer around here, I'd have to drive a couple of hours. There is one person locally, that I'd consider going to but he teaches during the week and I can't get there. What would prompt you to start training again or would you not start training again regardless? I would start training again if I could find a decent instructor, who can run a class so as not to bore the bum off the dogs in it. I find too many are nothing but going around in circles and doing the same thing over. It's hard to find a trainer and a class that is looking beyond simply teaching sit and drop. Quite frankly I'm sick to death of all of the touchy feely "Delta" trainers and pretty much that's what is on offer here. -
