  1. Even if we assumed those conditions you listed were common (which for the numbers being bred, they're actually not) - compare SLO with HD. SLO can't be tested for without removing the last bone of the toe and there is no evidence to suggest it is an inheritable disease. HD on the other hand.. easy to check for (doesn't require any amuptation, anyway) and usually genetic and easy to control if you're breeding from dogs with low scores. Oh if only it was that easy with HD. if only it were, we'd have done it by now across the board with every breed known to man.
  2. One of this country's best former racers and now popular ( and very expensive ) sire produces dogs that are so overshot they cannot eat properly and certain cannot hold prey of any kind. Another sire of note today has only on testicle, as do many. The number standing at stud or bitches that are bred from with thyroid issues is nothing short of astounding. There's Pannus, osteosarcoma, diabetes, anemia, thyroid condition, alopecia, SLO etc I doubt very much that the racing fraternity has preserved form, function or genetic health, what they do however is produce so many animals, that the odds are some of them can run around in a circle very fast, how quickly they break down or live after retiring is of little consideration. Having looked closely at "conformation" and the "race dog" it's easy to spot the weak links and predict where the dog is likely to break down. You can pay thousands of $ to use a stud that produces the tenacity and chase but form governs function and there'd be a hell of a lot people left feeling less disappointed and dogs destroyed if they really started to think about "conformation" ETA: less
  3. The dog certainly does have problems and it's an owner problem, a lack of training and socialisation. It gets put on the chain, not enough family time, attention or exercise to meet the dogs needs.
  4. I'm not sure how this is a win for dogs, pounds or potential owners. Whilst I admitt that the RSPCA temp test is essentially a crock of shit, a person who is not the legal owner of a dog should not be able to take a shelter or pound to court and force them to release a dog that has failed temp or health tests. and that kind of attitude lands many a dog owner in trouble and is the reason why we see so many out of control yap yaps

  6. Seems these trolls like B.S.L not because they think its its the answer to dog attacks, but because its a step towards wiping out non ANKC papered dogs.Thats going to help the ANKC cause Kinda invalidates the pro B.S.L cause if its realy another thing entirely. I'm sorry but where have I ever said that BSL is a good thing ? I certainly don't think for a second that BSL reduces bite stats. The methods of protest and defiance have all been met with deaf ears and BSL is not going away any time soon. Why would anyone want to wipe out non ANKC dogs. That statement is idiotic to say the least and the ANKC breeds have nothing to fear from BYBer's and mongrel bred dogs. There are not enough ANKC breeders now to meet the demand for puppies, so I'm not sure what purpose the elimination of other dogs would serve. But if telling people to buy a pup or dog from a registered breeder and make sure they have the ANKC papers and corresponding chip, earns me the tag of a troll, so be it ETA: if I did own a dog that could potentially be mistaken for a restricted breed or cross, I'd be collecting as much information as I could about my dog, it's parents, where it came from etc. I'd be proving parentage via DNA if possible, getting vet reports, behaviourist reports and anything else that might help my cause and lawyering up for the ride.
  7. We're approaching what 7 or 8 years of BSL now ? and there's been no headway made in having the laws repealed, they are here to stay, regardless of what we think of them and I personally don't see any major about faces happening in the next ten years. So in the mean time, my suggestion is that people who want a bull breed , get themselves a pedigree dog and then they won't have to worry about being caught up in BSL. If it means that people do not take on bull breed rescue mixes, then so be it. They won't have to worry about rangers knocking on their doors, issuing NOI's or siezing their pets. ETA: The rescues and shelters should NOT be rehoming these dogs. NSW should be considered the exception, as there is a means of breed ID and temp testing that will protect dogs.
  8. Why does someone need to express milk for a dog in UK or Aus? They could go to the local vet if the dog needed help. Its not like they live in a tent in the middle of nowhere My guess is that it would probably beat powdered milk formula hands down
  9. show me where any ANKC registered dog or bitch with corresponding microchip has been siezed and not returned or declared a "restricted" breed in any state ? It hasn't happened and it's not going to happen, so stop the scare mongering. If people want a dog that is not going to be affected by BSL then purchase a ANKC recognised breed, with papers and corresponding chip.
  10. bugger the bodpave, I'm off to Bunnings to buy me some hanging pots for the front of my kennels and makes me a garden. I planted a garden three times but the frost has killed it and all I'm left with a two roundabout roses
  11. I know a breeder who was feeding her own child and used expressed milk to hand raise a puppy. Breast feeding an adult dog is a bit much though
  12. This reminds me that I need to check the expiry date on everything and do a restock I don;t have a tick remover thingie, can someone post a pic of one of those ?
  13. I have three "advance" cooler bars that are seperated into different needs, I have mostly bandage in one, creams, tablets etc in another . They are clipped together and I have a basket in the front of my trailer that has the things that I may need but they won't be needed in an emergency, that stuff is on the cooler bags
  14. hmmm let me go and pull it out of the trailer. My tips are to have things that fix dogs when they shit, vomit, bleed or generally break  I have most emergencies covered for a weekend away and with the exception of major accidents involving compound fractures, broken legs or large wounds, I can get away with not needing a vet ETA: the contents of my kit sports tape 2cm's elastoplast 7.5cm's vet wrap 7.5 & 10cm's scissors tweezers hemostats basic dressing pack (it's a prepacked disposable sterile pack ) gauze swabs cotton balls melolin dressing gloves water for irrigation injectable saline jelonet dressing 21g needles syringes in 3ml, 5 and 10 eye pad crepe bandage lubricant cotton buds medi-swabs safety pins various little bandages, for dressing toes etc condy's crystals ( torn toe nails, pads ) boracic acid ( eye wash ) chlorhex concentrate ( if ugly things like pyoderma rear their heads ) gastrolyte ( for rehydrating dogs ) rapigel ( linament) penetrene ( linament ) frontline ( just incase we come across a flea infested show ground) dermaid creme ( for me and the dogs LOL ) nutrigel neocort ( I use it on bites, minor cuts, any minor infections that crop up ) Clavulox ( antibiotic tablets ) carprophen ( anti-inflam ) anitihistamine (bites, allergic reactions, hives ) buscopan (vomiting dogs with tense tummies ) Maxolon ( vomiting dogs, car sick dogs ) asprin (minor sprains and strains ) scourban ( for when the wrong kind of poo comes out ) curash powder ( used for under arm rashes, belly rashes etc ) curash cream ( same ) Ace ( for when you need to knock someone out or sedate a dog ) Vytrate and Recharge ( general rehydration on hot days or after hard work outs ) a big pack of horse padded cotton dressing, if I need to pad out a leg thermometre poultice dressing lectic soda crystals ( to make a dog vomit ) pliers Malaseb ( skin wash or ear cleansers ) behave paste I have to check the front of the trailer as there's more in there thermal blanket adjustable muzzle ETATA: some of the things I have double up but there are times when I look at a rash or shin condition and decide if I want to dry it out, sooth it, take pain away etc , so I have a few options
  15. I'd be taking him to Schofield or Barnsley and getting one of those to look him over. If he was playing rough he may have pinched a nerve or put something out. Dogs also benefit in general from being kept in alignment as they age. You could also try Ester-c rather than going to Cartophen injections
  16. It would be my chiro first for me and then the vet if my chiro says it's not muscular or they haven't put themselves out somewhere
  17. If you don't want them to chew, then build runs and don't put anything destructable in them, supervise when in the house or other areas where there are items they are likely to investigate and chew. Give them lots of their own toys, empty milk bottles, cardboard boxes, bones etc. Chewing is a self rewarding behaviour for dogs and it relieves boredom and investigating with your mouth is fun.
  18. And small children No Rozzie , I keep the small dogs and children in here
  19. I love the greyhound jammies lol! They look so cozy. :D My kennels catch all of the winter sun and are shaded in summer. I've just taken a summer pic but have to upload it. That's a one coat winter day, usually the greys are triple rugged LOL
  20. I'm one of these people who keeps Greyhounds in cruel and unkind condtions
  21. The ANKC ( state CC's ) also do not have the means of storing the information.
  22. Government says it's a restricted breed or cross and therefore it should be up to the owner of the animal to prove otherwise. It's easy, you buy and ANKC registered puppy or dog with corresponding microchip and you will have all the proof you need. Perhaps people should really think long and hard about what "type" of dog they purchase and where it comes from. BSL is here to stay and if you buy a bull breed cross or a dog without ANKC papers, you are a fool
  23. mine are on concrete and you don't want that
  24. yep, child in the crate or trolley with toys while you go in the ring.
  25. Could be fixed with something as simple as giving calcium between whelping each pup and then for a couple of days after..
