Crufts To Feature Crossbreeds For First Time
WreckitWhippet replied to silentchild's topic in In The News
ohhh my dear lordy... there are not enough swear words in the world for this one -
How many entire dogs have you housed/managed? With all the entire dogs I have had through care, I have never once had a dog do 'anything at all' to get to a bitch in heat. But, I admit, that's only about 10 dogs or so. Maybe you've had more entire male dogs in your care and have witnessed more of this desperate behaviour than I? I agree with this. I've never had a problem with my entire male. There was a bitch on heat at the park the other day and he was certainly interested until I called him off and distracted him. You can still have control over entire dogs. People take their dogs on heat to dog parks? No they take bitches

Blue is quite possibly the number one colour bred in ANKC registered Staffords at the moment. You cannot assume that brindle is the number one colour based on the "generic brindle pound mutt" , the "staffy's" that the pounds are full of, comprise of mostly mixed breeds, you don't see very many Staffords in pounds. Colour fashions chop and change within breeds and is often influenced by popular sires. However for sadly for the SBT, some "breeders" that were in it for the money decided to put high prices on the "rare" blues and the idiot general public couldn't get enough of them, it encouraged more people with no idea to breed. For the most part they have been nothing but second rate dogs, in terms of type, structure and soundness. For all the breeding of blue,a tiny handful have made it into the show ring. Brace yourselves for the next "rare" colour, and it's bound to be liver or B & T

Red Dog Driving Kelpie Dumping
WreckitWhippet replied to Jellyblush's topic in General Dog Discussion
It was hardly a block buster, so I doubt it impacted much at all on the dumpage rates -
My tip would be a quick vet trip to make sure that the mongrel cat hasn't scatched your dog in the eye.

Raw Chicken Wings - Staffy
WreckitWhippet replied to krystle_chino_tira's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If it was all she was being fed for a day, I'd say about 4 wings depending on the size of them would do for a day. If you are feeding dry and raw, then a meausured cup of dry and 2 wings would be enough. It all depends on how much enegery the dog burns off and it's metabolism. Try mixing up your meats , red one day and chicken the next. -
Do you mean Staffordshire Bull Terrier ?

Says it all really... perhaps it was there way of telling you to bugger off and go talk dog elsewhere

Rehoming Rescue Dogs - How To Enforce Desexing ?
WreckitWhippet replied to brutus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I never said desexing prevets cruelty and I don't buy into that line of thinking. Desexing, vasectomy and tubal ligation prevents dogs from every being bred from. It's not "rescue" if all you are going to do is recycle entire dogs, bitches and pups back into the community. -
If she's not droppin any weight and feels the same, there's agood chance that she's just had a major growth spurt. When that happens the amounts the eat and require will decrease. You'll porbably find that she'll have another one and then her eating habits and amounts will start to settle down. Teething can also impact on their eating, however I've not seen it in Staffords. Get rid of the puppy milk, it's useless and also the fruit supply. Cut any treats or table scraps Cut her food back to half of what you are feeding in the morning and feed her once a day. If she's eating all of that with enthusiasm, then the next morning increase the food a little. Look at her body condition and fed her accordingly, if she loses weight add a little more to her diet and if she gains it cut it back again. A measured cup of dry and a couple of chicken wings should more than suffice for a day.

Rehoming Rescue Dogs - How To Enforce Desexing ?
WreckitWhippet replied to brutus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sending them into the world undesexed is not a "good thing" no matter what situation they were saved from. If the reason for not desexing was age and weight, then the responsible solution is to hang onto them longer, until they can undergo a GA for either neutering or vasectomy. -
Bugger I missed it. I would have driven over for the big day.

If desexing was done purely to stop breeding that would be fine. The fact is males that are intact can smell a bitch on heat for miles and will do anything at all to get to her. Hormones do that. It would be fine if we could guarantee that everyone had good fences and looked after the dogs, fact is they don't. People take dogs to parks let them off lead, and they have no control of them and no ability to get them back. If the siad dog smells a bitch on heat and all dogs with hormones will have heat cycles, the dog is gone and they wont be able to get it back. Too many dog fights start by dogs fighting about who is going to get the bitch first. Desexed dogs are significantly less likely to roam, they don't feel the need to mate, which intact dogs have, and nor are they enticed by the smell of a bitch on heat, or are they a bitch who has a need to mate during the heat cycle. Sure if dogs have responsible owners, that train and socialise them, keep them securely confined and only let them off lead when they can control them, it would be fine. Problem is it doesn't happen. Desexing in the rescue world is only partialy done for breeding control, it is largely done for behavioural issues. And females that have tubal ligation still have heat cycles and still have all the other things that go with it. Most people cannot handle them, as simple as that. Vesectomny and Tubal ligation may stop breeding it does not stop cancers, which desexing can do. What do we do instead just trade some joint issues with massive amounts of cancer?? Or are you saying that we then desex them all at a later age - who is going to pay for that, and who is going to even bring the dogs back in for it. Shelters used to only desex dogs over 6 months of age and give out free vouchers for those under that age to bring them back when they turned 6 months. Less than 25% of dogs were ever bought back. Over 90% of them had had at least one litter and most had been found at large a number of times as well. That does not even consider the health issues of not desexing. It would be nice if we lived in a world in which most dog owners were responsible, sadely that is not the case. In fact I would say that the opposite is the case, that responsible dog owners are rarer than irresponsible ones. Drop the hysterics. Leaving a dog or bitch until 18 or so months of age and allowing it to mature, will not see is suddenly develop massive amounts of cancer.

well hold onto them until they are old enough and well enough to be put under GA. If they aren't well enough for a GA, then they aren't well enough to be rehomed -
Rehoming Rescue Dogs - How To Enforce Desexing ?
WreckitWhippet replied to brutus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I imagine that an anaesthetic is still required for a vasectomy (& so they may as well be castrated instead). I am hoping for an option that delays a general anaesthetic until they are a little bit older. 3/5 pups are going to vets & vet nurses, so it is only 2 pups specifically that I am concerned about (despite the fact that the people seem responsible etc.). Vet nurses are amongst some of the biggest back yard breeders around. Rehoming them to a vet nurse is no guarantee. The only way to ensure they cannot be bred form is to neuter or have a vasectomy performed. Providing they are over KG in weight, there's no reason why they cannot be done before the are rehomed. The recovery time is very fast for babies. -

what she says. Tubal ligation for the girls and vasectomy for the boys and you'll never have to worry about them breeding . Once they are out of your care, you have not a hope in hell of enforcing any kind of desexing contract. ETA: it is illegal in NSW to withhold microchip papers from a new owner and you must submitt them paperwork to transfer ownership, within 14 days of the going to their new owners. -
Damned if you do, and damned if you don't... errr! It's nice to see a study that looked at both extremes and what issues could possibly arise from each. T. I don't see how, if you neuter once growth and development has finished and the dog is physically mature. Do it before they have matured and you have an substantial increase in the risk of HD and cruciate tears, do it too late in life and there's the increased risk of tumours. Perhaps "rescue" should be looking at vasectomy and tubal ligation, as being a solution to allow for growth, development and adequate maturity. Dogs and bitches require the hormones for growth and development, so it should comes as no suprise that taking them away results in health issues.

Leaving Dogs Tethered Outside The Supermarket
WreckitWhippet replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Apart from being risky, it's also illegal to leave your dog tied up in a public place in NSW. -
Put a piece and your mouth and you might think twice about giving them as treats, when you taste the salt.

You can be as careful as you lile with the baking but when you serve food at a show from the top of a trolley, there's bound to be hair. It's fun to play, guess which dog that came from

I just serve cakes and the likes to friends with " excuse the dog hair ", I haven;t had anyone complain, it goes with the territiry of owning a dog
