I went through the same thing with Houndee. My guys get a daily brush to stimulate the skin, he had a decent diet, his coat was shiny but he was still covered in scurf. I went through his diet which was/is pretty good but found the problem to be an inbalance between the Omega 3 6 and 9. Once we worked that out, with the help of MellG, I put him on performa 3 oil ( from horse supplies direct ) it took a couple of weeks for the reults to begin to show, but he was in good enough condition to enter his first show and win neuter in show He has continued on the same diet with the addition of the Performa 3 and gets stripped daily with a stripping knife to keep the coat under control.

I worked in a salon where I would sometimes wash 20 plus dogs in a day. My back held up pretty well but I noticed a real difference when we got purpose built baths that were just below hip height, they had a ramp for the dogs to walk up and tie hooks on the back of them, they were excellent and meant no bending at all. I also had an insert at the other salon and in the mobile business, that was made of PVC tubing and covered in a thick shade cloth, that was also very good and saved much of the bending for the smaller dogs.

Pretty much the same here. I check my dogs ears each week or at any sign of head hsaking, I inspect the pads and paws nearly every day. I check teeth every day as a part of stacking the dogs and I have my hands on them every time I walk out the back door. It's something every pet owner should be doing, not relying on the vets once a year check over at vaccination time. In all the years of regular vaccs and check ups, I've not had one vet say that there is anything wrong with any of the dogs.
-
You got that bit right. They were given the appropriate advice for the litter and that was take them to the vet. Spike: I know of several Frenchie breeders who began to xray their dogs and bitches. This was more of a case of just seeing what is there and making sure that everything was ok. This was especially done in those with no tail at all, as can happen. I also believe that there have been some Tentie breeders who have done the same.

Thankyou

Just a quick question for those ethical Rotti breeders. Can you tell me if spines are routinely xrayed in those with a natural bob tail ? Do the tail lenghts vary as in other breeds from no bone to almost 1/2 length ?

You will need to see your vet, as some of the puppies may require fluid injections, they may also need to rest their stomachs for 24 hour and be put on vytrate or something similar. Has the bitch been fed correctly ? what type of diet is she on ? most bitches can provide adequately for their pups, but close attention mist be paid to the nutritional requirements of the bitch. Go and see your vet, a sudden change in formula could make them all ill.

Contact your vet.

I nursed one of our Staffords through some quite nasty punctures that we thought we would have to drain. I bathed him at least twice a day in salty water and gave it a really good scrub, it hurt like hell but he put up with the crap. A couple of time the entry to one of the wounds closed over and I had to get a needle, hold the area and puncture it again. If you can't hold her down to clean it up properly then sedated at the vets is the only option. Many bites can be dealt with by their owners but are prevented from doing so by the dogs.

Parents BC bitch is on the above and has been for a few years. It does work for her but they have to be on time with the dose or she has accidents. From memory I think it costs them around $70 a month, I'd have to check.

I think the pain factor only comes into it when he gets a knock playing, other than that you would think he's 100% fit. There's a little bit of swelling on the patella. We/vet initially thought it was a heavy knock and bruised, rested the dog things looked better and then as soon as he was allowed back at it, he knocked it again and is sore. Will be waiitng on the offical comfirmation but will get a head start on the treatment , as it only involves strict crate rest and can't do any harm. It should heal OK as there isn't any other damage just the patella. I guess that's what you get for being super fit and playing hard all day every day, someone was bound to do themselves an injury sooner or later.
-
Has anyone dealt with and cared for a dog with a fractured patella ? There are no additional injuries, all ligaments are intact and are not damaged. I know about the 6 weeks strict rest, is there anything else that we could look at to aid recovery ? Swimming is not an option as there are no pools within 300kms. Any other suggestions most welcome, natural therapy, massage etc.

I am blessed with a supplier who has no idea how to bone a chook and we gets heaps of meat, the neck and some fat on the chook. My guys all run a V8 engine, so there is no trimming here. I chuck the skin out as the Pointers and Pugs don;t like it, but they eat the rest.
-
Both are a waste of time and money. Unless the bitch experiences complications and excess bleeding, fluids will not be required, they certainly aren't needed in a standard desexing op.

Puppy buyers of ours just lost a Stafford to this hideous disease. Sadly they didn't get the 6-8 weeks and the choice of treamtment, they lost him in less than a week , with no prior idication that he was ill. I wish you all the best and my thoughts are with you and your dog.

I'm putting off bathing him, so I won't know until next Friday if I have really made a difference to his skin, but so far, it's looking very promising. The dry skin has all but gone from around the armpits and I'm getting less scurf coming to the surface , when we have our daily grooming. The true test will be how he comes up after the bath. It's looking good for the ring and he's all set to go. Thanks to you all for your suggestions. I still have a few options to try from here, should the first choices let me down. -
Bonnie has gone to the crapper in recent times, as has Supercoat. I used to use Purina One and the Frenchies always look 100% on it, I now prefer Optimum to Purina One. They are your two top choices from the supermarket. Optimum is also a good size for smaller dogs.

Out Of Dog Food, What To Feed For Tonight
WreckitWhippet replied to MDL's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Could be in the same situation as myself, we buy our food in bulk, three different foods and 40kg's at a time. The pups are on a certain brand of food, we brought two big bags on a weekend and brought it home. I knew that the dog food would run out sometime that week. I open up the brand new bulk bags to find them both full of dead maggots and other very disgusting stuff. Who could have planned for that. Then the only stockist has no more on the shelf, no one within a two hour drive stocks it and the replacement from the company took nealry three weeks to be delievered. I could never have anticipated that happening but it did and I had to change biscuit that I was feeding. I'd find some mince or whatever meat is in the freezer, add some vegies to it a hard boiled egg or some sardines. I would never hear the end of it , if I let mine starve, i know it's three in the arvo by the screaming demands for dinner. -

Sounds similar to what he's now on. I've been using it a week and I think it has made a difference, I won;t know for sure for another couple of weeks and until I bath him again. His coat looks super and shiny, it's just the scurfy skin. -

What shits me about the KC at ANKC events is the following " I certify that this exhibit has not within the said period of three months been in a kennel affected with Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Parvo Virus or any other contagious or infectious disease " To me that means if you have a dog that has contracted a contagious disease or one that has been exposed to one , including in your own home, which qualifies as a "kennel", that you do not enter shows.
