Advice Please (please Be Kind)
WreckitWhippet replied to Lasareina's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Please, don't do this to vet nurses. Euthanising unborn puppies and kittens is not fun, even when looking at the bigger picture. Do her when she's finished her season. I'm sorry but that goes with the territory if you are a vet nurse or a vet and if an owner wants a bitch aborted at that stage in a pregnancy for whatever reason, then they shouldn't be subject to that emotional crap from surgery staff. -
Advice Please (please Be Kind)

- How likely is it that Juno will become pregnant after one mating? Very high - Juno is only 9 months old - we had been considering possibly breeding the two of them further down the track but weren't considering this before she was about 2 1/2. What are the dangers for her to carry pups at 9 months? Whilst a season indicates that they are physically able to mate and carry pups, there's the more serious question of is she mentally ready ? I can tell you now as a breeder of SBT's that you do not want a puppy raising puppies, they can be good mothers but they can also be very stupid, refuse to settle and eat their young. - Hunter is large for a stafford (22kg) and Juno is very small and petite (12kg). This has caused us to question whether they would ever be suitable to breed together. What are the dangers involved with the dog being much larger than the bitch? No they aren't a suitable match in terms of size. You also need to look at are they a suitable match with bloodlines, type and temperament . Have they been tested for L2 HGA & HC and eye tested ? - What are the "morning after"/abortion options, and what are the risks? You can have your vet administer the mismating injection (Alizin). You could also spey when she has finished her season, this will abort any puppies - Would you consider it more risky to try and abort the possible pregnancy, or allow it to continue? I would consider it a risk to continue, there's a very good chance you'll end up with an emergency c -section and a young mother with no idea what to do with the puppies. I'm not going to be kind , it was your responsibility as an owner of an entire dog and bitch to understand how a bitch cycles and to take adequate precautions to ensure they did not mate. -
There's not an SBT hallmark to be seen in that mix, there is nothing to indicate SBT at all

Hypothetical: Baby With Temperament Fault
WreckitWhippet replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had one in my last litter that basically screamed at me from day dot when picked up, he was not social, you could not stack him when all the others were little pro's at it, he shit his pants and buggered off when the strangers came into the yard. That puppy in my eyes, although stunning was not staying at my house and I'd seriously thought that he wouldn't really even make a half decent pet. Long story short, I rehomed two of his sisters, and came home for a day trip with him and my husband thought I had a different dog. Turns out his sisters were dominating him to the point of him not being able to function as a happy normal puppy. I'm not going to be so quick to judge in future. -
What about sleeping during the day ?

I'm Becoming Afraid To Walk My Dogs
WreckitWhippet replied to *kirty*'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Me too and it's not the dog parks that I'm afraid of, I live in a cul de sac and the issue is making it to the end of the street with dogs in one piece. I've given up now, as each time I think it's safe and I'm now longer thinking the a-hole dog will attack, it gets us again. The dog did eventually get one of mine and it ended his race career. It's charged us in our own drive on numerous occasions, charged me in the street more times than I care to remember. So when people tell me they are afraid, I believe them. -
Sounds rather excessive for being underweight, no water and 6 cases of hookworm. You'd get less for killing someone in this state
-
I don't believe it's the God given right for just anyone to breed dogs without a sound understanding of what they are doing and needs to be regulated with a breeders licence. Licencing dogs with council I think is the wrong approach and the owner of the dog needs the licence with the dogs they own recorded against that licence.......dogs only need to be micro chipped IMHO not licenced as they are now and a person is licenced to own dogs. I believe if you want to breed, then you apply to council for a breeders permit for that litter only unless you are an ANKC registered breeder with a prefix. The breeders permit nominates the sire and dam if cross breeds the prospective breeder needs to give reason why the cross breeding is necessary and the purpose of it........ultimately it needs to be made hard, too much messing around to get a permit for people acting on a whim to breed dogs as a deterrent, not a free for all as it is now. All great in theory, except that chipping has been mandatory in NSW for over ten years and the non compliance is significant. Who in their right mind would put the right to veto a litter in the hands of a Council

massage to gently break up any lumps and cabbage leaf over the affected area, get it to stay on with some vet wrap around the body

In all seriousness we have a great piece of legislation in NSW but it was set up to fail from the get go because it could never be enforced in such a way as to make it effective and there just hasn't been the education to go along with the enforcement. We have laws that say you can't drink and drive or speed, but at the same time we have a lot of resources used to enforce and education campaigns. Government didn't just introduce the legislation, leave it at that and then claim it doesn't work, so lets get tougher. Average Joe would be able to tell you that it's illegal to drink and drive, they'll also be able to give you some basic facts about why it's dangerous, the risks associated with it and probably some stats. There are still those out there who ignore the legislation but for the majority of people they know it's wrong, dangerous and punishable. If you asked every day folk on the street how do you effectively care for a dog and what basic requirements you need to meet, you wouldn't have many get past feeding and watering it. There's a hell of a lot of educating and work to be done in this area. They simply cannot associate dog attacks with a lack of socialisation , containment, mental stimulation , exercise and knowledge of canine behaviour. Ask average Joe why a dog attacks and you'll most likely here, because they are a Pit Bull, large breed, pig dog and the like, all the things that the media deems to make a dog dangerous.

I doubt you will be proven wrong

Why make it so much more complicated than it needs to be. Not everyone wants a pedigree dog and why turn someone into a criminal just because they choose to breed outside of the ANKC ? It's very simple, although some fail to grasp that dogs of all breeds and crosses require certain things to be met, companionship, nutrition, vet care, exercise and mental stimulation and being kept in their own yard. If we can work towards having owners meeting those requirements, regardless of what breed or cross they choose, then naturally the attacks on people and other animals will decrease. You're not going to ever see bite stats and attacks on animals eliminated. We already have legislation that says you keep your dog in your yard and under effective control or leashed when outside of it, we have laws regarding chipping and registration, legislation regarding how they should be cared for. What we don't have is Councils that educate and enforce. NSW is about to see yet another piece of legislation introduced, we've already got the CAA, BSL and the introduction of further dangerous dog legislation after the death of Tyra Keune but it's useless if there isn't anyone policing it. The CAA used to be a well written, simple piece of legislation that was fair to dog owners and the wider community, why we require anything beyond that leaves me shaking my head.

In an ideal world those who own a dog would make sure they secure the dog in it's own yard and meet the dogs requirements in terms of nutrition, exercise, companionship and mental stimulation. The end

What Is Effective Voice Control?
WreckitWhippet replied to silentchild's topic in General Dog Discussion
Some individual dogs in the same breed have better handler focus than others, that is they are easier to establish value for handler reward and dogs like that are easier to train a super recall than dogs who find more instinctive value in chasing things they shouldn't. Good foundation training makes a big difference preparing a dog for super recall........I have a working line GSD trained from day 1 in handler induced drive satisfaction, recall and off leash obedience followed on from early training to the point that he doesn't get distracted at all having learned that the best reward comes from me, as Huski said previously, they don't want to miss out on what may be on offer from the handler, but the dog needs enough genetic drive for this to work to it's optimum. I have a lower drive GSD also who's not bad but nothing like action man who's a nut case in drive According to this, I should have a hard dog to train then. Oddly enough, my greatest huntress is also the one with the reliable recall. She can bring down rabbit and Hare and a hare is not an easy accomplishment. -
She's been a public voice against those laws for a long time. There is a wider discussion in the UK about the role of the RPSCA (people have posted some articles in this forum on that) so I'd expect her to use her voice when the opportunity presents itself. I suppose the flip side view is Bryan May of Queen referring to anyone who doesn't support the laws as akin to pedophiles. Clearly the debate there has been pretty nasty for a while, given the number of criminal prosecutions and drama between the two sides. However, one person's "wildlife cruelty" is another person's hunting. If my dogs put up a rabbit or a hare in a paddock here is it less cruel because they are exotic pests and the hare hasn't been deliberately walked up? The issues people raise with the RSPCA have been raised before, sure. And usually raised within the context of a wider respect for the work that the welfare officers do on the ground. But I agree with Dickson Wright that people need to understand exactly what they are contributing money for. In the UK it seems to be so they can prosecute those who dare let a dog chase a rabbit or hare and here, they like to use the money to go after nice folk who give old dogs somewhere to live out there last days, someone who exhibits a debarked dog or an owner who was feeding her cattle.
-
Agreed and I'll add to that, any organisation that has powers such as the RSPCA should be answerable to someone. The RSPCA in Australia can do what it likes to whom it likes and there's stuff all you can do about it. I'm yet to get an answer on just who you complain to when you have a grievance.

another case of owners not keeping dogs in their own yards.. I really feel for the victims of such dog attacks that are so easily preventable.
-
This says it all for me in one line
-
So how are the "tough" new dog laws going to prevent that from happening ? Every dog owner should have a secure fenced property and take precautions to ensure their dogs do not get our and cannot be let out.

What Is Effective Voice Control?
WreckitWhippet replied to silentchild's topic in General Dog Discussion
IMO if you get training recall right you proof in high levels of distraction and the dog is taught buying into a distraction doesn't pay for them. I have never seen a dog with more prey drive than my Malinois but she will recall mid chase off live prey, training a reliable recall is IMO something that is possible with ANY dog of ANY breed. Yeahhhh, but your Mal is a performance bred dog too Huski, dog's like that are not hard to use their drive for training a super recall or maintain handler focus through high level distraction :) It's pretty easy to write it off as such and for people to make excuses as to why their dog can't or won't be taught to recall. If I believed all the bullcrap about Sighthounds and how untrainable they are, I'd never have bothered to teach mine. -

I suspect any mass culling of dogs would present a significant political problem in the US. Tho' honestly in this case it sounds like it's what is required. And at the least some funding for euth and rangers would help. The Animal Rights nuts would revolt. They'd rather see dogs die of starvation, mange, distemper, rabies and parvo than be culled.

Nope, that is not reliable and therefore not acceptable.
