No one here is suggesting not to vaccinate either, but rather to have a rethink about how it's done. Following new protocols pups are still vaccinated twice as babies, it's just they are done later and they are boosted at 14 months plus when their immune system is full developed. Following those guidelines and titre testing may leave you never having to vaccinate that particular dog again.

The main thing to keep on hand would be chicken wings and then work around that. You'll need less lamb flap and less of the other things. Start with a few meals of chicken wing only , get that poo firm and then introduce the other things one at a time and one meal at a time.

I agonised for ages over raw feeding and couldn't commit, thought I'd get it wrong, made it harder than it was. I've since let go and within reason just chuck the dogs a raw meal and be done with it. My Stafford girls are glowing, all of the dogs are ripped and well have excellent muscle definition and tone.

A six week plus Stafford pup is capable of getting through a chicken wing and a carcass, so there's no need to worry there. It will also give him something to do and will help with teething. Don;t mix you raw and dry together , they digest at different rates. He will get all that he needs from a diet of chicken wings, carcass, necks, lamb flap, rabbit, roo tail, mince and other raw meaty bones. Give him a hard boiled egg with the shell on a couple of times a week, the same with tinned sardines and also a dollop of natural yogurt. If you can get a hold of fresh mackeral, you can give that to him whole, rather then the sardines. I think you will find on an all raw diet , that is predominately chicken ( provided that this is not what is causing the intolerence ) the quality of his poo will quickly improve. In a matter of days it can turn from sloppy to hard, small and white. Don't be too concerned about his weight, body weight has little to do with the ampunt of food that he requires. Chuck him a carcass for breakfast or four chicken wings and a piece of lamb flap for tea and see how he goes. He should be just covered and young pups are better off being a bit thinner than rolling fat. Just go along week by week, if you think he drops some weight and looks to thin, feed him a touch more. As he grows it's going to be a constant juggling act with the amounts you feed him , depending on his growth spurts. ETA: you don;t need to worry about preparing him any kind of meal, just stock up the freezer , you don;t need to make raw feeding difficult.

Try your raw diet first and see if his poo becomes firm. I think once you sort that out, the rest will sort itself out. There's no point in breaking up the evening meal, breaking it up over a couple of hours is not long enough for the first part of the meal to be digested anyway.

I Think Hamlet Has It :(
WreckitWhippet replied to persephone's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Been there and done that with a Pointer. Bloody scarey stuff when you can't work out what is wrong with them. The good news is it can be back to normal in a couple of days. -
The reaction may not kill your dog now and there's probably no need to rush off to the vet. As an owner I would be seriously researching vaccs and protocols before giving my dog another vacc of any kind.
-
Same with ours. Happened after 2nd and 3rd shot. Lump went down after a week or so. Nothing to worry about. Reactions of any kind to vaccination are a cause for concern. Reactions should see the alarm bells go off. There are lots of threads on here about vaccination protocol

Cut the dry altogether and switch him over to raw foods like chicken frame, wings, lamb flap ( trimmed ) roo tail ( but make sure he's tolerant and feed smaller amounts ) and other raw meaty bones. Give him half a can of sardines a couple of times a week and a couple of hard boiled eggs with the shells on, a dollop or natural yogurt every few days. Keep it simple and no fuss ETA: If you have no luck on an all raw diet ( and that means no treats from packets etc ) then you might need to investigate further for an intolerance, be it beef, chicken or whatever

Has Anyone's Dog Choked On Chicken Necks?
WreckitWhippet replied to ~Aimee~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
In all the years and all the dogs, I've only ever had one choke, it was on a chicken wing and it was a Stafford. I still feed raw and believe that the risks are minimal and the dog benefits from the whole raw foods . -
If you want to spend less and use the best, go raw.

AKA: Cheesy doodle If it doesn't clear up quickly when flushed then get it checked out

Try and find a long term study on the effects of Ivermectin and Moxidectin in brood bitches, stud dogs and pregnant bitches.

In my opinion it's crap, right up there with Science Diet.

Hamburger mince is next to useless, as is cooked mince , pasta and rice. If she eats the kibble and you're happy with that stick with it and swap the other stuff for chicken wings, lamb flap, chicken carcass, rabbits, whole fish, other raw meaty bones etc. Give her a meal that gives her something to do, she'll thank you for it.

Um ... My Bitches Bits Look Diffrent ?
WreckitWhippet replied to MonSqueek's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It doesn't look "normal" but they all look different anyway. If you have noticed changes get it checked out by the vet. -

Need To Hold Onto Coat Until Sunday
WreckitWhippet replied to Alison's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Make the decision now to go with or without coat. Bath and blow dry now to try and get the bulk of it out and follow it up with another bath and dry It's better to look naked, then look ratty and have coat coming out in handfuls. ETA: you can also use a force dryer on a dry coat, put your face mask and goggles on and blow dry him like he was wet, it gets heaps of coat out, without bathing -
There's really no point in vaccinating against KC, it's like the common cold and there's a large number of strains.

It depends if you want to go down the road of the Barf type diet, making up meat and veg mixes/patties or if you choose to feed raw whole foods or as close to as you can get. Our guys have a mixture of chicken wings, necks, carcass, lamb flap, fish, rabbit ( when we can get it ), roo tails, small amounts of liver, eggs, sardines, vegie scraps and left over veg, chicken mince, beef mince, beef brisket. I keep it simple and my boys and girls have never looked better. Like anything it's a matter of working out what works for you. I've followed the advice of some fellow breeders , rather than what's in books but I'm sure there are some others here who can give you some links and further choices.

It's a royal pain in the arse, we've had it go through the kennels a couple of times and being vaccinated offers them very little protection, infact my vacc'd dogs came out worse off then the one's who were not. I don't know how many times you have to say it to people.... LEAVE YOUR BLOODY COUGHING DOGS AT HOME Two times we have had two months off showing because other exhibitors can't miss a show
-
I'd suggest the pup off to obedience and the older dog to be taken out for a nice walk or some one on one time with whoever is at home ( I'm assuming we means partner ). Staffords can form very deep bonds with not just their human but with other dogs and they need to be learn that it's ok to be seperated from the pack for whatever reason.
-
Why not avoid the cereals althogether and keep going with the chicken, start adding lamb flap, fish, small amounts of liver, and meaty bones. Staffords love chomping their way through dinner and they look a million dollars on a raw diet.

Get the tearmender non toxic glue out and glue it into place.
