  1. Dogs are allowed in the house. It's when in the yard they need to be enclosed in a run that meets specs. Of course if you don't want to force your dog into this kind of life, DON'T BUY A DOG THAT CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS RESTRICTED. The law isn't new. People need to either abide by the law or suffer the consequences (or more precisely have their dogs suffer them) No need to be corrected coz I don’t think you are wrong. And be careful folks . this is a hypothetical, but stories like this happen every day. if you have a ridgeback x kelpie and it barks at someone who then complains to the local shire , who then brings a breed assessor to expertly identify your dog . the assessor is having a bad day or just doesn’t like you for some reason then bingo your dog is a dangerous one. Which state are you talking about ? Because this is certainly not the case in NSW. Restricted breeds and dangerous dogs are two seperate things in this state, you can have a dangerous dog that is not of a restricted breed. Restricted breeds are allowed anywhere you like, providing you put the muzzle and leash on , whenever they are taken outside of the child proof enclosure.
  2. Before you go and pick up your puppy, go and ask to see the copies of the relevant health testing for the parents. There are plenty of ethical registered breeders out there, who would arrange to fly a puppy to Darwin for you.
  3. Putting the muzzle on Hugh would be as effective as closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. What the RSPCA thinks is now a mute point. Current proposals are increase the council powers not reduce them.
  4. I think the BSE serves it's purpose, which is offer further explaination of the existing points of the current breed standard. Like the breed standard, it's not without it's contraidictions, that being coat colour and pigment. Not sure if submissions for review have closed yet
  5. Oooh, I'm glad you've brought that up! lol Would be interested to hear your opinion on it sometime My opinion on the BSE ?
  6. I have a copy of the Breed Standard extension, if anyone wants to read it. It goes into further detail regarding structure and temperament. Happy to email it
  7. You got it in one. In a nutshell if you have a Pit Bull or a dog that could be mistaken for one and it's out roaming, council will have the power to seize and euth it, with no avenue of appeal for the owners. Chip, register and make sure your dogs are wearing ID and I'd go so far as to tattoo the ear.
  8. Mate I’m disgusted that people I used to look up to, are the very people from within our breed that have the power to give your dog a death sentence. I have to say im gutted No one gives a dog a death sentence in NSW, unless the dog has been declared as a restricted breed and is seized for non compliance. If your dog is found to be of a restricted breed at the time of breed assessment ( if you choose to go down that path , rather than fight NOI in court ) you must comply with the restrictions of muzzle, cage, lead etc. You are not forced to PTS your dog.
  9. If it's a dog that is attacking or has been involved in an attack, then why not ? It's dangerous , isn't it ?
  10. Have we learnt nothing since the introduction of BSL ? The "any dog can bite", "Guard breeds are worse than Pit Bulls", "Pit Bulls are misrepresented by the media" , "I've been bitten by a little fluffy dog" ,arguements have NOT worked in the past and are not going to be an effective strategy in the future. Mita has posted plenty of information , which spells out in no uncertain terms in which direction a successfull anti-bsl campaign must head.
  11. PB folk are deluding themselves if they think that the RSPCA is going to help their cause any time soon.
  12. Owners had best make sure that their dogs are chipped, registered, wearing ID and I'd go so far as to tattoo them. Looks like any unregistered dog found roaming is as good as dead, if Councils choose to go that way.
  13. Dogs do not have "lock jaws", it's a myth. Some have a head construction and muscles, when combined with a tenacity, makes for a powerful bite and grip. However, it is certainly NOT a lock jaw American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, should not be human aggressive, it is highly undesirable in any of the three breeds.
  14. Sam was seized for biting a sales man. So why is it a BSL issue ?
  15. If you have one that does like to bark a lot and back chat, teach your pup to talk to you. We've got a couple that are quite mouthy when they want to be. I've taught them the "quiet" command and also "speak to me " or " what are you doing ? tell me ? "
  16. It's one of those threads you just have to read... nothing ever changes but yet we are drawn to it
  17. welcome to the wonderful world of owning a Stafford with a bit of get up and go and some personality. These are the bright puppies, they are the playfull one's , full of drive and they are also the easiest to teach When you bring your pup inside, arm yourself with a handfull of treats, as it's the ideal time to do some basic obedience or teach a new trick. Your puppy is full of energy , so put that energy to good use. You can pop a light leash on, to prevent the jumping on the furniture etc. You will find that after 5 minutes of some training, you're pup will be ready to settle down.
  18. There are sadly ANKC registered breeders who export litter after litter of puppies each year. For some it's just one breed, others have half a dozen breeds and are exporting 3 plus litters each month overseas via a third party. How do you look for it ? Ask around, there are plenty of breeders who find the practice disgusting and will certainly tell you ( from information printed in the Canine Journal ) who is doing it. If you are purchasing a puppy, ask can you visit the breeders kennels or can you send a friend to look at how the puppies are raised and the conditions in which the adults live. Many breeders will welcome you into their home and kennels ( it might not be when pups are not vaccinated or bitches are about to whelp ) as they have nothing to hide.
  19. reflection was my first thought, I'm sure he'll soon be interested in the noise the bowl makes when you push it round and round ..LOL
  20. So does this mean the message of finding a reputable breeder is not even getting through to DOL members? Sadly no... I do understand that the loss of a pet is devastating and that a new one can help to mend the heart, when you are ready but why buy from someone who ships litter after litter and breed after breed to oversease pet shops ?
  21. They might like to consider changing dry foods, I've found that Optimum Puppy keeps the weight on, as does Royal Canin. They could also add chicken wings and lamb flaps to the diet, as well as left overs that aren't dangerous. I would avoid adding huge amounts of additional fat to the diet.
  22. Do you realise that your puppy has come from a "breeder" who ships entire litters to pet shops via Mr McDougal ?
